Sony DSC-QX10/100 Lens for Xperia Z - Xperia Z General

Hey guys, I'm just drooling over this concept ever since I saw the leaked pictures.
What do you guys think about this new technology. Essentially, Sony is packing a full camera in the lens, which we can attach to the smartphone. So we use the phone for the screen and controls. This is very cool and convenient if you ask me.
How much do you think will Sony charge for this Lens Camera?
Source

No less than 300usd I supose.

saw this a while ago on the Sony IFA live stream and w0w it was amazing, capturing shots just like Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 using only the lens.

So since there is no 4k recording on the z1,
And these lenses have mics on them,
What video resolution do these record in? I'm guessing a minimum of 1080,but wanting 4k

sadly spec said it only record 4:3 which is 1440x1080..i dont know if it can capture 16:9 1280x720 though

For me a great concept! Will buy the QX10 for 199,- EUR through Amazon.de, release date should be this month

mmm, so where the lens take the image?, regarding to the pics, it's not from the phone lens itself, mor even the dock contacts. Is it from NFC?

Finally Sony is stepping up its game huh.
I don't own iPhones so I don't really have much choices when it comes to extending my photography options. This shall be interesting to say the least.
Although, I still hope they would fix the camera app since it really does not compete well with the likes of iPhone and Samsung Galaxy~

As soon as I saw the price I lost interest in this.
You can buy an entry level DSLR (well here in Australia you can) for $400-500 which will take vastly superior photos so why bother?
I can see the appeal of a small portable unit, but the $$$ is just ridiculous for what is definitely a unique concept, and will appeal to a certain market, but I don't know if it has the longevity?
Could be wrong of course, but I would prefer to carry a $200 point and shoot to do exactly the same thing

Here are some photo examples from the Z1 & a video example.
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_z1_camera_samples_fresh_from_the_ifa_booth-news-6732.php

Some might want to pay a premium for convenience? I mean, I would still want a proper DSLR for major works, but for those times that you might not want to lug around another bag of camera and lenses, perhaps you would find ways to build on what you carry around all the time (smartphone).
Then again, Sony has always been expensive anyway.

Great so all the cheap little tarts will buy them and take semi naked slut shots screaming I'm a photographer. Wonderful. Not.

From OZ too geeky girl, it has longevity but needs the right price.
And this is first gen, I'm disappointed in the video capture but if they take amazing photos especially at low light (no xenon/plasma flash ugh)
I'll be getting them at price drop.

Dont want to sound rude but why many people keep saying 4k??? Unless you are rich enough to complete your home with all 4k stuff, if not, what is the use of 4k just alone on the phone??? Many people's PC cannot even reach anywhere near to 4k...

Xperia Z - Camera test/comparision

HI,
So, I'm one of the few who is definitely not happy with his new Xperia Z. Having had my go at the screen, where I understand things might get mixed with personal taste I decided to have a look at the camera.
I took some photos today with it and also with my Galaxy S2. Images on the left are from the Sony.
Full size images:
Samsung: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8p9lsf08oa1l0rq/Samsung.zip?m
Sony: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ep5vco70vgqh5yz/Sony.zip?m
You be the judge
Edit: One interesting thing is image size in MB. Images from the Sony are significantly smaller than the ones from the S2 even though they are 12MP vs 8MP (last image from the Sony sampes is 9MP)
Cheers,
P
Can you upload a video sample too..nobody seems to help me with this..can you help uploading the video sample to dropbox i really want to check the video quality.

Either you're good at Photoshop or your phone is faulty. My camera is better than the S3 + iPhone 5 even without looking in depth. Same with the screen, as always, anyone who gives any care about "viewing angles" is idiotic. You don't hold your phone sideways.
The XZ in my opinion is everything I expected maybe more. Stop *****ing.

Definitely agree. Since the op made this topic, I've done side by side comparisons between the GS2 and Xperia Z and no way in hell is the s2 camera better than the Xperia Z. The s2 over-saturates all the colours. The XZ takes a picture of the object as it is, it doesn't try to bloat it with over-saturated colours or try to richen the picture which I like.
How can 8mp sensor takes a bigger pics than 13mp sensor?

I had a camera trial with my mates iphone 5, the Sony lost on all but daytime shots, so not happy with my Z Even my old 4s takes better night shots than the Z, and the half second lag before it takes the picture makes it feel like a 5 year old cheap digi camera.

Thanks man. This seems to be the truth. Sony didn't make the effort with camera or speaker. The speaker made me laugh when I tested it in the 3 store. Really wanted to like this phone but too many negatives to jump in for a two year contract !
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Nothing wrong with the speaker louder than sg3, also the cam is good on this i think people are trolling and chatting bs.
To everyone saying that the Z has a great camera can you please attach some photos (straight from the phone please)?
The samples on dropbox are completely untouched, the other images are just put side by side on Photoshop to get the screenshot.
Sony clearly under performs, specially in color reproduction (wrong wb) and less sharp images. On the second sample you can't even perceive the small cracks on the sticker while they are perfectly visible on the sgs2.
So please, attach some photos. Maybe I have a defective model, who knows. But I've looked around for camera samples and they all look the same.
I do, however, believe this is a software problem. Too much noise reduction and compression. There is no way a JPEG that has more pixels and is, on average, 30% smaller is size has more detail
May be a sony hater, sammy's spy doing some ****ty work here.... i dont think he will be seen here anymore ... he knows he is caught.... heheehhe
I can see that everyone here appears to want to believe the camera is great, but that isn't quite the truth. Check some sites like GSMArena - the camera doesn't fare that well in comparison with good 8mp shooters from last year in fact. It's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, I mean those 8mp weren't either by cellphone standards, but I think it is fair to say that it is a bit disappointing considering the increased mp count and supposed sensor advancements.
The thing that I am curious about is the file size. It seems common sense to me that if 2 pictures are in the same format then the larger file will have more detail. Is it possible that we can make the XZ compress the pictures less (maybe take pictures in a better format) and have a much better result???

Appart from the obvious 10x optical zoom, have you noticed any advantages on using the QX10 instead of the Z1's 20.7 mpix G lens 1/2.3shooter?
Are photos that better with the 1/2.3 18 mpix QX10? Is it worth? Or should we wait for the more capable (one inch sensor) QX100?
.

From my perspective the QX10 delivers much better quality photos. I would use it for stills not motion though. It has superior low light, nearly noise free, sharp and clear. However, it will be more convenient to carry once the spa-acx2 case is available, since you can reduce its thickness by removing the clamp section.
However, you have no real control over the QX10. It is designed to be used in auto mode. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you want proper control you need the QX100, which I will be getting soon. From all the descriptions by Sony, I didnt expect the QX10 to have such good low light photos. So it makes me wonder how much better the QX100 wil be.
I reckon it will be better manual control and slightly better quality optics.
The Z1 camera firmware really needs improving. The danger here is in 3-6 months Sony have addressed this, and the QX10 might only be useful for zoom. Somehow, I still think the QX10 will always take better quality shots though.
So, it DOES take better pictures than the Z1's sensor?
Better quality yes. Z1 camera has more fancy options due to its speed and effects
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk 4
As I sold my HTC One to get a better camera phone I hope Sony update the firmware as fast as they can. The HTC One took very good photo's but the 4mp was lacking for detail in my opinion and it was nowhere near as good as my trusty 'old' Lumia 920 camera which I was very impressed by.
Going to wait a few months and see if the camera improves if not will seriously consider the QX10 with the Sony case for attaching it onto which looks seriously cool.
Hello Gavin!
Long time no see!
I am too thinking of swapping from HTC One to Z1 due to purple tint issue in the camera.
Though is it worth it to take the Z1 instead of other phones like S4 and G2 just for the 20mp?
Camera is important for me but the 170g and large bezel of the Z1 are crazy no?
Also what about the screen under sunlight?
Even if not as good as the One,is it usable for texting for example?

I wouldn't go back to the htc one. The z1 camera needs firmware tweaking. 20mp doesn't equal great shots. I wouldn't get either samsung . the z1 build quality is fantastic. Waterproof etc. No sunshine yet. So can't tell you. Texting etc is fine. Default keyboard can be customised. I think its swiftkey.

Sony Xperia Z2 vs iPhone 5s vs Lumia 1520 low-light camera comparison

Not a fair comparison. I have owned the 5S and 1520. Use a Note 3. The 1520 would still take a better or as good as shot if it was allowed to focus properly and not have the focus light covered
Not saying the Z2 will be poor just adding some balance.
Mmm.. maybe those box is made for the z2 showoff
Maybe after released to the market, there will be a better camera comparison. But I still love the z2 rather than 5s or the nokia or the s5
Something is very suspicious about this test. I don't know what they're doing, but I would not expect that dramatic of a difference with the Z2 camera in reality.
People need to understand how ISO, shutter speed and aperture work before making judgement. Unless you're just gonna use it for selfies in auto-mode... in which case, who gives a crap.

EXACTLY! What people don't understand is that the shutter speed and ISO can be manually adjusted on the Lumia to take some very impressive low light shots that would never even be visible on the almighty 5S.
Not a very good comparison, we'll see what happens in real life. But still... suggesting NFC trickery with the sticker on the box sounds a little bit far-fetched...

I'm sad to say this but the z1 is the first and last sony device I bought. Why? Lack of development, locked bootloader and unable to unlock it. The fact it has a 21 mp sensor and I'm obligated to use 8 mp to take better photos than If took it with 21mp, video recording full HD only at 30 when the hardware can do 60 fps. And so on.
It's a shame. This device has a lot of potencial but it's wasted.

Because you get better images that way. Unlike older cameras that simply subsampled the image, the Z1 uses information from multiple pixels to reduce random noise. This is exactly what Nokia does with the 808 and some crappier Windows Phone models (1020, 1520).
With a high pixel count camera, you get very dense information. You most likely don't need such a dense information: you can print an 8MP image on A4 and still be over 300 dpi. When you look at the image on your screen, the PC/phone will blindly reduce the resolution to match your screen (which is 1920x1080, about 2 megapixels).
In other words, unless for specific corner cases, 20 megapixels is overkill. So, you're better off using that dense information to get a better, lower density image. The methods Nokia/Sony use for that are derived from seismic image processing, which is one of the cornerstones of the oil industry. Very complex, very well tested, and very accurate. For 99.99% of the pictures you take, they will be better than the raw 20MP image (and you do have the option to get the raw 20MP image when you shoot manual, although those corner cases are when a real camera would be the best choice).

Great story but mine pictures, no matter which pixel density, still with a lot of noise. Unacceptable for a kind of high-tech device and camera.

I will be extremely disappointed if huawei uses the same camera that's in the mate s, especially when the huawei 7 has a 21mp currently.I don't care if the phone ends up costing only $500. I currently have a note 5 and the camera is amazing.

Note 5 camera could be better in low light with neon, mixed light condition. The detail loss somewhere contrast are too strong!

MP count doesn't
equate to picture quality, but it does impact some odd the Dunne details especially when you blow the picture up. I have an A7r & A7rII so I'm very familiar with the dos and don'ts of photography.

Right now the note 5 arguably has the best camera of any smart phone including the 6s.. Bottom line the nexus phones have always had crappy cameras including the nexus 6 which had an 13mp camera. The new nexus should at least match current technology which is a 16mp with f1.9 or a 21mp f2.0.. Having a 12mp is going backwards and it's probably that crappy camera in the already released, old huawei mate s

Don't care thaaat much about how many MP's a camera got. I'll go for quality instead of highest MP any day.
I like a good camera but its low on the 6P spec list for my usage.
On one hand I'd like to see a perfect sensor for 4k video (that should be 12MP no a 4:3 sensor), if possible 4k HDR video, but that should require too much power for a 21MP sensor.. on the other hand the 21MP should give more detail in good light conditions.. so all we want is the best camera on a phone to date (hardware and software wise
wish it would come with the g4 camera. omg that is the best phone camera i have ever seen. too bad i liked nothing else on the g4 lol
I take a lot of pictures of my kids, I can't always carry my high end cameras. I need something of quality

12MP is fine as long as the post processing is done correctly.

It all depends on how they process the images, I dunt expect it to be on par with my DSLR but it will certainly be better than my Nexus 6 is now.
I got mixed feelings about the nexus phone this year. May be because I no longer have crazy desire to flash new roms. Mostly try to stay as stock as possible. Even batteries have got bigger, so I find no need for custom kernels either. Camera will not be top of the line, screen I am not sure what quality it has... also when I see that Huawei is the one making the phone, I freak out. We got Google which is best information collection source for U.S and Huawei which serves Chinese government. 2 red flags

In my case is canon 60D but who wants to go around with a 10lb camera hanging on his neck 24/7?

Using a 19 or 21mp camera won't necessarily improve your pictures.. by your logic, the iPhone 6S's 12mp/f2.2 camera is last generation too.. yet it consistently takes some of the best pics around

Good luck taking best quality pictures with a 12mp camera without OIS buddy.

I mentioned nothing about having OIS
not having OIS really makes me consider walking away... I'm going to order a 64gb as soon as they go on sale tomorrow, but I'm sure they won't ship them until October which gives me time to cancel.... I can move pass the 12mp and lack of wireless charging, but really no OIS...
same thing, i'll pre-order it tomorrow and wait for the camera's feedback of the Z5P
