[Q] Strange e-mail/message behaviors - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

OK, had the S4A for about a week. Lots to like coming from my S2, but a few niggling things that irk me.The main one is the e-mail app notifications. I had the combined Inbox on my S2, but all it ever showed me on the widget was when there were new e-mails. For some reason, the S4A also combines the new text messages count into the e-mail widget icon making it look as if there are new e-mails. Even if I read the text messages they still pop up in the widget count until I also delete them through the e-mail app. This is annoying as hell, obviously. Is there any way to turn this behavior off? I only want to see a message count on the e-mail widget for actual e-mails. What's the point of having messages show up in the e-mail app? I can't do anything but read and delete them (doesn't delete the actual message, just its appearance in the e-mail app). I still have to go to the messaging app to reply, forward, etc.
The other problem is the e-mail app itself. I have Push turned off and one of my accounts set to manual retrieval. Still, it downloads e-mail without me doing anything. I have to turn off sync completely to stop it, which is a pain as I have to remember to turn it on to retrieve e-mails and then it gets everything going back 24 hours (minimum setting) whether it is new or not. This using an Outlook account. If e-mail retrieval is set to manual why would the phone retrieve e-mails as if set to push? It should do nothing regardless of whether sync is on or not. That's how it worked on my S2.
TIA

Nothing? Could someone just verify that this is the way their S4A works, as well? It just makes no sense to me why it does this.

GMAIL Label Push/Notification BROKEN?

There's been some sporadic posts of this around the net, but nothing concrete.
I've got a AWS N1 on WIND Mobile (Canadian company) and GMAIL push works perfectly fine (basically instantaneous) if emails lands in my Inbox.
If however, email lands in a Gmail Label (that is set to auto-archive, ie. bypass the inbox and go directly into the label), the N1 will NOT notify me that I have new mail.
So basically:
Email ---> Inbox = Notification
Email ---> Label (w/ archiving) = NO Notification
Has anyone noticed this before? Is this just the way Gmail functions on the N1?

Well, that's how Gmail works... on your PC.
Ok, gmail labels are somewhat confusing, so I'll explain how they work with an example:
Open up gmail.com on your PC.
Send an email to yourself that will get autoarchived.
Will the email show up in your inbox?
No, because it's autoarchived.
So why would you get a notification on your phone if you don't get a new email in your inbox?
Get rid of the auto-archiving if you want the notifications to pop up.
Notifications on your phone mirror your INBOX.

Which leads to a problem i occassionally have; I have my Gmail box set up for multiple inboxes; everything from my MAIN Gmail address comes into the inbox, as well as everything from 3 other gmail address; the other three however, are autolabeled upon receipt respectively; every so often, I'll get an email on one of these 3 emails. My N1 will show that I have an unread email (across the top, it'll say "Inbox (1)"), but I can't see the actual new msg. I'll then log into my main gmail account on the PC, and sure enough I have a new email in my inbox, with both the "inbox" and alternate label applied. Once I mark it as read or delete it, my N1 then shows that I have (0) unread msgs. It's random, and doesn't apply to just any single email address I have funneled into my main Gmail Inbox. I'm at a bit of a loss. If anyone has any constructive ideas (besides "don't use multiple inboxes), I'd love to hear them.

Changes labels to all mail, then change back to inbox.
You'll see the unread one there.
Thank's for straightening that out Paul.
I figured as much, but just wanted to be sure I wasn't experiencing some weird glitch. It's a little bit of a pain to have all mail in the inbox as it really does clutter up the place.
Oh well...
This did get me thinking though. Since the GMAIL app is basically running all the time on the phone, would it not be possible to write code that would have the GMAIL app issue a notification when it receives an email that goes straight into a label and not the inbox? Especially if that label is set to sync.

Unfortunately, Google Apps (like Gmail) are closed-source. Not much anyone can do with em.
You might be able to use the secondary Mail app to add Gmail as POP or IMAP and it might give notifications for other labels, not sure.

Gmail Solution

Here it is. Go Into your Gmail settings on your desktop computer. click on settings in the upper right corner, click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP, disable IMAP and enable POP for all email. I also selected delete Gmail when accessed with POP.
This solves the problem with email notification not disappearing immediately after you click on the email, it gets you all your email promptly and it does not show emails in your inbox, for ex. you have 3 unread emails, you go to check and there are not any? So it fixes that issue. It syncs perfectly with the desktop sever. I had constant problem with above issues. So yeah the culprit seems to be IMAP. I tested this on Froyo and 2.1 Vanilla. Works for both. I imagine it will work on Sense too.
I just noticed this problem last night.. the Gmail Unread Count widget tells me 6 new emails, the Gmail app says Inbox (6) at the top, but there are no unread messages! Going to Gmail on my desktop shows no mention of these 6 supposedly unread emails.
Just tried your trick, but the problem's still there. Running Froyo here.

I'm in the US, maybe that makes a difference. Also on stock froyo. It works perfect now. Make sure you have changed your settings correctly. I checked settings again and posted information is correct.

So what exactly is the gmail problem that requires this solution? Your description is quite convoluted and confusing. Email notification not disappearing when you expect it to, or messages not showing in your inbox? Either way seems to me like nxt says. Probably just a case of your mail being hidden in your SPAM label.
Notification tells me there is new gmail. I tap the notification and read the mail. Return to home screen and notification has gone. Bog standard and it works perfectly fine for me.

I'm in the U.S. too, on T-Mo.
I tried the old 'lets reboot and see what happens', and now it's all working perfectly. Thanks for the tip!
Does no-one else use gmail push via the normal email app?

I guess there's a lack of features when compared?

Cool. Good you figured it out. I'm glad helped out someone. I couldn't figure out why everytime I checked my inbox there wouldn't be any messages. I went to desktop and saw the messages in my inbox that I had already read. Also once you click on notification you have to hit back arrow to get the notification to disappear. Solved that as well.

This happens to all versions of android. Its just not syncing with gmail correctly, so you phone shows no new emails, but says thier is 5 unread. If you log on to gmail you will see emails you marked as read unread. All you got to do to fix is to mark them as read from within gmail web client.

Set it to POP and it fixes that issue. I don't get that anymore. Everything is working perfectly now.

What do you mean by "Phone....says there is 5 unread". I assume you mean the Gmail client on your phone lists them in BOLD? If so, how can you say in the next breath "If you log on to gmail you will see emails you marked as read unread" ? You have just said they are unread on the Phone side, so why would you expect to see them as marked read in gmail web client.
I can toggle messages on the phone between read and unread and within a few seconds the changes are reflected in the gmail web client. So all good here.
Perhaps it can happen to all version but it does not happen to everyone. If it was a widespread issue, I think we would be hearing a lot more fuss about it. My Gmail works fine and does not do what you describe. I have IMAP enabled.

Honestly, the stock GMail app works like a charm for me; I haven't had to do any changing on my accounts. Heck, I was able to sync my University of Phoenix e-mail account as we use GMail as well.
Easy fix
All you have to do is select on labels, go to all mail, it will show a message you have previously read as unread. Then just mark it read again and problem is solved.

This has happened to me on a few occasions too. What he means is that when you get a Gmail notification THEN you check it with your phone and lets say you delete it with your phone. However, the next time you get sent an email and get a notification, when you check your gmail it will list your unread emails as (2) instead of (1). When you go into your gmail application to check, it also says unread (2), BUT you will only see one email.
Now if you go and check your Gmail using your computer, you will see both the emails, the one you read then deleted and the one you just received.
I know this is not a widespread problem because this has happened intermittently to me and has not happened for a while.
But good job on finding a fix for those that do suffer this small but annoying sync problem.

This is the bit where you guys have me confused. The only way I can tell unread messages in the gmail on my phone is by the bolding and the corresponding number in brackets in the header. So I cannot see how you can get the conflicting info within the gmail app itself on the phone?
Inbox (2)

Clearly I am missing something obvious. I can conceive how the Gmail notification bar indicator count could differ. But I cant see where you see the difference within the android gmail app itself. Is it that you get a different number of bold messages to the number in brackets?
In any case - main thing is you got the problem sorted I guess.
I used to get the gmail error but since upgrading to 2.2 beta it works so smoothly now.
Why are you redirecting your gmail account to the email application through exchange anyways?
The gmail application supports push.

Basically the number in the brackets show you have 2 unread emails but your phone gmail client isn't showing any unread messages. They are all gray and read. Then if you log on to the web client you will see 2 unread messages.
Its just a simple sync issue.
Better solution to the sync issue (where for example the phone says Inbox(2) but shows no unread messages):
Manage applications, filter all, Gmail Storage. Clear data. Then re-open Gmail and let it resync. This always fixes it for me.
I only ever get this problem after a) flashing a new ROM or backup, or b) turning on a phone I haven't used in a while.

Why does my mailbox (Gmail) keep emptying itself.

Did not find anything in a search. It seems like every couple of days or so my inbox purges itself of everything but new mail. The messages are still in my inbox on the pc, just not the phone. I am sure this is a setting I am missing, but where is it? Thanks in advance for any advice offered.
Have you checked how many day's mail you are downloading? The default is 3 days and messages older than this will be deleted from your phone.
make sure you are using imap gmail.
if you are using pop3 it will do that. And also check that you have imap service on from gmail website. and like ^^ said make sure you have it set for more days.
By default mine deletes off the phone once it's checked on the PC.
I've been having trouble with gMail for a while now anyway. I use its Exchange feature to deliver PUSH e-mail, as it arrives. The server seems to disappear regularly and, when it returns, messages are deleted from my phone in chunks. Sometimes, it seems as though one message in particular blocks the account from receiving more for a while, then, suddenly, a batch will arrive. I wonder if this strange behaviour also shows itself with straightforward POP and IMAP accounts.

[Q] Notifications for Gmail?

I have four Gmail accounts syncing and set to "As items arrive". But I fail to see any sort of option that let's me get a notification/vibration when items do arrive, like the Outlook one.
Can anyone tell me where this notification setting lives? Right now, if I get Gmail items arriving, I don't know until I unlock the phone and check if numbers have popped up on the tile.
Also, are they syncing by WiFi when the screen is off?
I'm not understanding. Since I use only gmail maybe you are teaching me something...
What does the phone do when it is off when a normal POP message is collected vs how an imap is collected vs how a exchange is collected?
How do those differ from gmail?
My gmail makes a noise, a short vibrate and then the tile indicates the number of unread.
Does outlook, exchange, pop, or imap act differently?

When I unlock my phone, the WiFi status icon animates and "reconnects". Leading me to believe that when my phone is locked, it isn't using WiFi to do any syncing. This worries me.
My Exchange Outlook makes noise, vibrates, and updates the tile. But my Gmail things only seem to be updating the tile - so I was hoping there was a setting somewhere I just overlooked...
You know what, perhaps the secondary accounts dont get the same notifications as the primary or something weird. Maybe commit to a hard reset, setup only the gmail and see how it acts...I know there is goofy stuff with the calendar that is shown as the main one...
Not sure. I think we will get far more interaction int he at&t forums on certain items but it feels unnatural to leave my precious...my precious! XDA
I have one Windows Live, and 3 Gmail accounts linked to my phone. All my accounts give me the same alert sound I chose in the "ringtones & sound" settings of the phone. All are set to receive as sent. Ive tested, and showed coworkers a few times, emails always seem to arrive with in 30 seconds of sending an email to one of my accounts.

My exchange (work), windows live, yahoo, and gmail accounts are all working in terms of getting the notification via sound and a number of unread messages on the tile.
What is weird is that when I check the lock screen, I see icons for any unread exchange, windows live and yahoo e-mail. I never see an icon for unread gmail on the lock screen, I have to swipe up and check the tiles.
Is this what everyone else is seeing? No big deal, but I would like to see an icon for unread gmail on the lock screen. Oh, I have the Samsung Focus.

I think WP7 only shows your first 3 email accounts on the lock screen, each in a different position along the bottom.
I have 4 email accounts syncing with my phone (in this order): Gmail, School mail (essentially Gmail), Work 1 email (Exchange), and Work 2 email (Exchange). I can see notifications on the lock screen from my Gmail, school mail, and my work 1 email, but not my work 2 email. I do receive notification sound and vibration for all, however.

Another thought. If you are setting it to "As Items Arrive", why not try setting it up as an OutLook Exchange account?
First, delete the previous Gmail Account.
Now, setup a new account, select 'Outlook'. Use your Gmail info. When it fails, enter Your Full Email Address as the User name. When it fails again, select 'advanced' and enter 'm.google.com' as the Server, then select 'show all settings'. Now select any prefered settings, such as turning off Contacts and Calendar if prefered so it only grabs email. Probably change the Account name to Gmail, etc. Now hit 'sign in' and you should be set. It will operate exactly like an Exchange Account.

Issues with constant email re-syncing with stock mail app

Hi all,
I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910C) on version 5.1.1
I'm not sure when I first noticed this, but my phone seems to be constantly re-syncing emails and ramping up to thousands of unread emails, notifying me (there are no new emails) then on next sync, they all go back down again to the correct 'unread' emails.
Then randomly (more noticeable if I force a manual sync) it ramps back up again to thousands of unread emails (not correct) and if I force another manual sync, it drops back down again to the same number of correct unread emails...
Not only is this eating through my data, but also through my battery and more annoying, I keep on getting notified of new emails that I don't have!
I have over mail 10 accounts set up on my phone and this happens to most of them, some times all of them, some times just one of them, it seems completely random.
The accounts are all set up as POP/SMTP not IMAP and I am using the stock email app.
Whether relevant or not, it also notifies me of new emails during the night when sync is off, which is probably the most annoying part of this. I have done a factory reset and the issue persists.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
