[Q] How do I perform an upgrade or changed the actual installed Android - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi developers,
I'm new to this world and got alot of questions looking to find their answers.
I bought recently a new Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 (comes with customised android provided by the french operator Orange), I really need to know how to replace the actual system with the official one!
2nd demand is, should I need to upgrade my phone to Android 4,3? I've seen 2 versions the Android-4.3-I9505GUEUBMFP-Odexed-I9505 and Android-4.3-I9505GUEUBMFP-Deodexed-I9505, what is the difference between those 2 versions ?
Looking forward to hear from you soon.
Cheers

You can google the difference between odexed and deodexed. It helped me too when I have no idea the difference between the two. In other words, use search if you have questions but if you were not able to search for an answer that is the time to start a new thread.

4.3 was only released on the Google play edition gs4. With that said this must be a ROM you are talking about. You have to be rooted and custom recovery installed. Odex and deodex are confusing things but odex is mainly for performance and other mods may fail. Deodex is a stable ROM that can have more variety of mods installed but may lag. Do some research if you never flashed a ROM because, and trust me when I say this, you don't want to be reading post like crazy at 4am rushing to get the process done so you can get sleep.

The best suggestion is to read up first and use the search function, start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2149990
then have a look at the stickies in each forum for instructions.

First, let me tell you a few things:
1) Unless your question is really specific and noteworthy, ask it here.
2) Try to find the answer for your question before you post it. Chances are that your question has been answered before.
As for your questions:
1) What do you mean by official? Do you mean touchwiz not modified by your carrier? If yes, then check this thread.
2) The non google edition s4s haven't been updated to 4.3, So that's probably a custom rom. ( btw thanks robogoflow for explaining the difference. I didn't know it myself. )

Oh another thing to remember, respect, in other words don't go around making demands, it's not nice nor polite... people are more likely to genuinely WANT to help you rather than scald you

then just unlock your bootloader and have fun
? You don't need an unlocked bootloader to flash a firmware if its signed using Sony's key?
If you want to update to ics, you can just get a ftf of the firmware and flash it.

Hi mate, a few months ago I was in the same boat. I build PCs, understand basic programming, etc etc but it's a whole new world these android phones! Haha very humbling to go from the guy everyone asks for answers
To the guy who has nothing but questions. Anyway point is I can relate.
When im at my pc a bit later I'll gather up all my bookmarks and links and dump em here for you! 99% of what you need is buried here in xda land so in the mean time... Start reading! Haha

if you've rooted your phone I'd recommend "sysTune" from the store - it's an easy way to change the running priorities in that you simply afford each process a number between -20 and +19 - the processes with the lowest numerical settings are given the highest priority and vice versa - it's an easy way to keep the speed right where you want it, and it's great for a really smooth launcher

Just with reference to this question, when I found out that ICS was available for my phone I just relocked my bootloader and upgraded via PC companion. However, my suspicions were confirmed from first boot into ICS, all the custom roms I had been using were much better!
But I thought you should know its very possible to relock your bootloader, so you might as well try a few custom roms while you wait for ICS.
Ive had my arc for about 6 months now and I have tried all the kernels and roms I could find, I reached the conclusion that Arconium ICS v4 Get Arconium ICS V4 here was the best for me. Im currently using Arcknight RC3 Get Arcknight Kernel here as my kernel but I have heard good things about using the stock kernel with CWM.
If your going to delve into the world of custom roms and kernels send me a PM and I would be happy to help with the processes you will need to go through.
The way I see it, there is no point in us both doing the 6 months of experimentation when I easily share what I've learnt with you

[Q] New to Nexus 4 / Couple general Q's

Hello everyone,
I am new to the Nexus 4 community however not new to XDA. I have survived an HD2 and also a T989 GSII. I have had so much success with XDA and I am looking forward to working with community of folks over here. I got a Nexus 4 (being delivered Monday) to enjoy the Android experience. However the more I look over it the more I feel it lacks some of the features that I enjoyed with previous custom roms like Toggles on the notification panel for example. I know there are many apps that will accomplish the same thing but why use all these 3rd party apps when you can flash a decent rom and get a better experience with often better battery life. I am coming from an All Star Developer ROM that is a compilation ROM ( CM10, AOKP & PA )
I apologize for the rambling. I need to know:
1: What is the difference between Original Android Dev and Android Development forums? GSII did not have two forums so I was a little confused.
2: For a genuine NEXUS device, are there still bugs in ROMS? RR, SOD, GPS not working, etc? This is not a huge issue with most GSII roms I just wondered if you guys experience this at all with this phone being stock Android already. I wouldn't think this would be the case.
3: I have done my research and I am ready to move on with rooting and probably Romming. Is there anything else maybe that would be noteworthy that is specific to the Nexus line of devices. This is a vague question so don't worry with it too much. I am just curious.
Thanks everyone! I can't wait till Monday!

1. "Development is classified as original work and/or documented edits and changes made to others work (with their permission) that makes it your own.
Stock ROM dumps that are modified (deodexed, etc.) from the manufacturer's original intent and then repackaged together classifies as development.

Thanks for the info! I guess more specifically I need to know the difference between the "Original" Development thread and just the "Development" thread. Should I refer to one more than another?
Also, in reference to toolkits. I am just curious where the issue lies with that? Because honestly that is exactly what I was going to do. I am not lazy, just efficient lol. I figure why do alot of manual driver installs and command prompts if someone created a program that would do it for you? (I reference links below) Is it faulty software? Badly written programs etc? I would think there would be more room for human error when doing it yourself vs. something automated. What are your thoughts on this? Has anyone else had luck using the toolkits in the links? or any other rooting toolkits? Thanks again!

Because, you learn something very important while rooting & unlocking your phone. Human error is covered for by the step by step guide. Human error while using the toolkit, you're stuck trying to understand what the fck happened. Learn fastboot mate. Learn to control your device to a 100%, learn to fix it if it's stuck. Understand what happens with "fastboot OEM unlock". Do you know what that means btw..?
The difference between Original Development & Development is in the quote I posted above. Paranoid Android = Original.
TWRP Recovery = Original
"XYZ" Rom based on cm 10.1 + abcd theme = Development.

Hey thanks again. I appreciate the input. I have more to learn in the NEXUS forum. I am used to ODIN and other forms of Samsung software so I will certainly read over the tutorial and absorb information. It will also help me to share my knowledge with others.

Hi community :D

Hi all.
I hope I won't got bashed too hard for being a noob.
Yes,I'm a total noob. The reason I'm here is because I am jealous of my sister's new Galaxy S4 phone and it's beautiful.I was like,"Samsung, you only cared for your new phones and ditch the old ones behind".
So,I decided to install a new ROM for my SGY.
Now guys, when answering me,please assume that I'm a total,I mean totally noob. I don't really understands the Android OS.
Just assume that I'm a country guy who is having a Nokia 3310 as my previous phone and 1 year ago,I bought SGY because people say smartphone are cool.
Note that previously,I only use my SGY for facebook, angry birds, phone call and messages.I don't know anything about flashing ROM etc.
So for this few days,I decided to dig deeper into my phone and see what's inside for this holiday week.
And these are what I want to do:
1)Understand the OS.
2)Root my phone( what should I do before, during and after rooting? like making back ups etc)
3)Clock Work Mod(What's this? I heard it before but I don't know what is this)
4)Install a new ROM.(I've seen hyperion 8 was the best ROM so far,but do suggest me if there are better ones, the Beats music driver,Bravia engine caught my attention.)
So,kind community, please help me step by step, and provide me guides on how to complete these things.Much appreciated. Good day

3.) it's a custom recovery (again use the search function for more info)
4.)hyperion is a BANNED rom! It's not the best rom and no rom is considered best since each has it's unique features (except copy/pasted roms). Choose which rom suits you and your needs best.
Again search is your friend, you'll find much faster answers that way.

1. as far as android OS is concerned it will take you some to understand everything about it. So keep reading here as much as you can to understand about it.
2. Rooting allows user to access all features of your rom and add or remove some features of rom. also it lets you modify your system easily. it is just like the administrator account of your pc in which you can do anything.
3. ClockWorkMod is custom recovery for our devices which allows us to create backup, restore them and many other features that stock recovery doesn't offers. When you install a custom rom you need this foe installation.
4. Everyone has his on tastes so better try custom roms by your own and see if you like them or not

Mirror for KNOXRAID V 5.6?

Hey all,
I was just wondering if anyone had a download link for the latest KNOXRaid ROM? I read what happened over there, but am still really a fan of his work and believe that ROM to be the best for me for now.
Thanks in advance! I ran a quick search and didn't come up with anything - sorry if this is already elsewhere :S

No. That ROM nor any mirrors to that ROM are not allowed on XDA any longer.
This has been discussed multiple times. Please do not ask for it.

Find another ROM. In your best interest to not attempt to run that rom. Firenote and DynamicKat are really good options right now
I love how people are telling us what to run and not run. That rom just works. Period.
I'm like you and have tried Dynamic kat. Not for me... not right now. Too little options and I am not a guinea pig for a beta room just to find out what I need doesn't work right now. Once it is established and a few revisions and themes and other stuff come out I will try it again. Until then I'll run what I want.
I own an S5 so don't care about an S5 look alike, it's a Note.
I pm you my email as to respect xda, but if that is the rom you want....
Thread closed. This ROM and it's developer have been removed from XDA.

all custom roms sucks...as much you gain from them you loose more

I tried every rom posible and all have the biggest bug ever ...at least for me it is but nobody is talking about ...there is something i don't know ? there is no need to be mean to my question but why all roms have this problem with keeping the playstore apps updated ...why the apps revert to previous versions and why this is hapening only to custom roms ?.. if then i ask you what is the use of custom roms? ...
these days even a five years child can root install a custom cwm , a custom kernel a viper4 sound mod and debloat a original stock rom
Lol.
I haven't experience anything like that, in any Roms i have flashed.

What kind of gapps are you running? I've been using opengapps for every custom ROM I've used and had no issue what so ever.

a custom rom is exactly what it says it is, a customised version of the original android operating system that somebody has, in their own precious time, played around with to try & give us something a little different for this ageing device. Chances are that if you went out tomorrow & bought an S7 edge & fired it up you would have to update some gapps, whichever you may use. I think you need to take a deep breath & have a little more appreciation & understanding for the things that go on here. If a 5 yr old is able to do what you claim then maybe you should turn your hand to contributing to the community................... but thats just my opinion......no offence intended
Is this guy for real? Apps simply don't revert to previous version after you update them. There's a simple setting in the playstore that allows auto update of your installed apps to the latest version when they become available. And is this how you lose from custom Roms? Lololololol I thought your device blew up or melted.
Buy an IPhone and explain us how cool is it. You'll enjoy it, for sure
Pls close delete this thread its useless.

The problem isn't the phone, it's the user.
Just close this.

Believe it or not, but I have seen similar behavior with some of my apps.
I update it dl today and tomorrow I have to update again, but there doesn't seem to be any changes in the changelog.
But this happens rarely.
So I believe the OP exaggerates. This also started happening only recently, so it's either something related to the new Android updates - which means older ROMs (5.1 and below) should be safe - or something related to gapps.
To everyone who asked for this thread to be closed and/or brought up the fact it's in the wrong place, why did you not click on the little triangle at the bottom left of the post and report it? Mods can't do anything about it if they don't know there is an issue.
As to the OP, I actually tried keeping an Android 2.3.3 ROM's Google apps up to date - one of the features of the ROM I offered. To do that I didn't include anything but the Play Store. Today, such a task would be difficult. If you like, you can download a GApps package from OpenGApps on a daily basis and flash it yourself.

@OP, please be carefully when you start a thread. Development is for development not for discussions and questions.
