To get you started you will need to know a few basics before you can start contributing to a community which has dedicated themselves in bringing better Operating Systems (Roms) to our phones. By knowing these basic steps you will be able to help iron out bugs from whatever Rom you have decided to keep on your phone and thus, improving your own user experience.
If you are completely new to this then you should read Glevitan's Starter Guide. It contains everything you need to know and it is a mandatory prerequisite before you can post in this thread seaking help.
Now that you have read and understood some of the terminology and how to recover from possible issues, you can root your phone with the A high-level DHD/Inspire manual S-OFF hack concept for advanced users [NOTE: The AAHK HAS BEEN RETIRED FOR NOOBS. After having spent some time in the XDA threads reading a lot more than what you should post, you will have realized that almost any question you could possibly think about has already been asked over a dozen times and why so many emphasize the importance of searching for your answer first. You would also come to realize what are the benefits of setting up ADB. Among one of ADB (Android debug Bridge - [GUIDE] ADB - Usage, Tips, Tricks and More! and [GUIDE]ADB Workshop and Guide for everyone) uses is creating logcats. These logcats help developers finding what is causing a bug and how to fix it. This is a quick [Tutorial] How To Logcat. However, this quick tutorial will only help you get started. Keep in mind that apps like aLogcat or Catlog could shorten important output from the log. Another one: Learn to logcat like a Pro!
To be able to help developers create a better user experience for us, we need to create a bug report. The reason why we first need to search the forum is to avoid confusing the developer by cluttering the thread with repeated reports, of bugs and questions which as mentioned earlier, most likely have already been asked. To have a better understanding of the different instances we can create logs, then have a look at: [TUT]Report a bug I do believe this can not be emphasized enough and thus, what better way than reading it from existz own words.

There is no best ROM, the opinion of each ROM is different from one person to the other, it is subjective.
Is there a recommended Radio for ROM x?
There isn't a recommended radio for any ROM, since the Radio depends where you live, it is best to test each one for a few days to see which one works best for you.
Can I Flash RIL For AOSP ROM?
No, the RIL is sense based ROM,AOSP RIL is provided in the ROM
How Can I Boot in Recovery/Bootloader if My Volume Rocker is Broken?
You must setup adb and then the command:
adb reboot recovery/bootloader
Why Don't We Have Any OFFICIAL CM9 ROM?
Because the CM team always makes everything work (camera, camcorder, etc) and since we don't have the kernel 3.0 source, there isn't any OFFICIAL CM ROM from them.

ADB is easy, very simple to use. Its the CLI interface that most cannot get used to and are afraid of.

After a full wipe including sd card, to restore a backup mount sd card to pc, create the folder "clockworkmod/backup" place backup there - unmount, flash.
Is there a way to flash a backup using adb? If yes, do the folders need to be created or not and what would the command be? I couldn't find an answer for that.
Edit: Answer is no. Why? I have no clue.

ok, before sending the file via PM, I can answer you...there's no choice of restoring a backup from adb. That is the same as flashing a Custom Rom....those files are packed in a certain way that won't be possible to be flashed in hboot (PD98IMG.zip) way.

Did you read my question about the hboot interface in the other thread? This, and the above question is simply a language (which I know absolutely nothing about) - there must be a way to get them talking to each other.

Anything you like really, it's your show. Porting? There are plenty guides for that. If you know any good ones I can link them in the third post. Can you look through the ones I posted to see which are good and if there are any ones that are repetitive or if there are better ones than the ones I posted? Especially the flashable zip link, since I don't know anything about that, maybe there is a betrer one or a guide or a tool for it?

Greets to all from another noob. Well, not a complete noob but a noob here on XDA given my few posts. My deep thanks for allowing a thread where sometimes there just might not be such a thing as a stupid question but honest ones instead,.... Hoping I can contribute something here as an owner of a softbank DHD here in Kyoto, Japan aka the 001HT. I spend alot of time trying to dig up general info from all over the i'net to help answer questions especially for ACE owners so I hope that might be of some help. Grant Barker's homepage is a great resource, (hope its allowed to mention that~). My first minor contribution------ 64GB MicroSD card usage with the DHD. It may already be well-known but for all us noobs who aren't too sure make no mistake..... I have the SanDisk Class 10 64GB MicroSD card and it works flawlessly in my DHD. Since I like to pack lots of MP3's and several full-length HD movies into my handset (helps keep the kids quiet on long drives ) being able to have that much storage space is a blessing! So, just to reiterate, 64GB microSD card--- no problems!

Absolutely, we were all noobs, still are and probably remain being noobs. There is too much information to cover and too little time to do it in. We here are just trying to return to the community what they have given us by helping the new members whenever they need it and whenever we can, to the best of our knowledge, by pointing them in the right direction. I am new to Android development and going to do some system level development, e.g. kernel driver, custom ROM and etc, and looking for a new device to replace my old 2.2 one.
Nexus 4 is good to me since it's cheap and runs Android 4.x. However it does not have an SD card. So in case of system crash or bad ROM, how can I recover it? Furthermore, is it good for normal Java dev?

Dude I don't mean to be rude but if you don't know the answers to these basic questions then maybe development isn't for you. You recover in many ways, by flashing an image file in fastboot or use a custom recovery to restore a nandroid backup if you have one installed. You can store said backups on a pc if your worried about the phones storage being wiped.

Most, if not all, Android phones have a low level recovery utility that is separate from the main storage. In the case of the Nexus 4, you will always be able to reboot by holding down power if the system hangs. In the case of an irreparable system error, you can access the aforementioned recovery utility by holding the Volume down button before and during boot up.
Please, don't let users like this deter you from development. Please use the stickied threads in N4 Development and General to familiarize yourself with Android's idiosyncrasies and xda etiquette.
To Kzoodroid: the guy is new to Android. If he's doing low level work such as kernels, he's clearly more knowledgeable about the development than you are. Knowing how to recover isn't indicative of programming expertise (you definitely don't need the former to have the latter). Recovery is unique to each platform. He's not a UX guy. He's not a skinner or themer. He is the nuts-and-bolts guy.

I'm ok with kzoodroid's message as this is not the worst one I have ever seen - just reminded me what happened to me 13+ years ago in a newsgroup.
It's good to know that I have more choices to recover my device since in the past months I just used SD card to do that on my old ZTE-V9 and thought that's the only way.
Btw: Is there an article or web resource to explain more Android kernel/system level stuff? As many information available are just for user space development with few system diagrams which are not quite useful to me. For example, (data?) partitions, blocks, governor, scheduler and etc. I can get some of them by googling - threads from this forum as well, but still want to get some comprehensive understanding. Or I can look at Embedded Linux to get detailed ideas? Sorry to ask this here since I cannot post anything in the general dev section yet.

Why is this thread here?
There's 2 main reasons really. The first reason is to stop the development threads getting filled with questions which have nothing to do with the thread they're posted in. That then makes the thread go off-topic which is not what a development thread is there for.
The second reason is because there are too many repetitive questions being asked. The main problem with that is the fact that other users will sometimes attack the OP and 'flaming' them.
The main way which this thread will help to stop that happening is by helping you out as much as possible, while being in a friendly environment.

Its a Nexus, imo if you need a toolkit you're either not experienced enough for rooting or too lazy Toolkits are out there and they are really straight forward, but you should get to know how to use fastboot/adb in case you need it. If you don't know what you're doing, you shouldn't be mucking around with your $200+ toy in case you screw something up and don't know how to use ADB or fastboot to restore it

No-one can answer this for you. We all have our favorites, so just test different ones out and see which you prefer.

While it's recommended that you always do a full wipe before installing, you HAVE to do a full wipe before installing your first ROM. If you don't, you N7 will not boot up.

You need a patched PowerHAL. On a very basic level, after a while the stock google PowerHAL likes to revert a lot of settings to stock. This includes the CPU clock speeds, etc. I got my PowerHAL from here

And I flashed the nofreq one. It will NOT change your frequency, ever. After you flash the PowerHAL, use your favourite app (I like tricksterMOD, but support your devs by buying their apps) to set your kernel settings, and set them on boot. This is the easiest way to get settings to stick.
OR
You could use an init.d script to set a maximum clock speed. This way, you will need a kernel/ROM that supports boot.img.

No chips are created equally. Some can take more OC than others. It is fact that too much OC can shorten the life of your CPU. A general rule I have seen used a lot is to not go around 20-30% over the stock speed. That is around 1.5GHz which most kernels get up to. However, a lot of devices can take more and will go higher. See for yourself, just don't be stupid

No. Probably not. Chances are you're on an old bootloader, which has a bug that doesn't allow you to get into recovery from the BL without being connected to a computer. So, connect it to your computer, hold vol down/power for 10 secs to go back to the bootloader. You can go to the recovery from there.
[SIZE=+1]Q9: On my HTC (whatever) I could transfer files onto my sdcard while in recovery. How do I do it on the N7? [/SIZE]
You can't drag/drop in recovery between your N7 and a PC. Either boot into android and transfer your files, or use ADB while in recovery.
"adb push nameoffile /data/media" or wherever your things are (beware of how many 0's there are on your sdcard).
[SIZE=+1]Q10: My files on my "sdcard" appear under /data/media/0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0/0. WHY so many 0's?? [/SIZE]
Ask Google. It’s got to do with the multiuser feature brought to android in 4.2. Ever user has their own folder, so you might have /0 and /1. If you're having troubles with it in recovery, I would update to the latest TWRP.

You need to be running completely stock to update. So, you need to either flash a stock ROM or the stock image.

No. Its the tegra smartdimmer. When your device is playing a video, the Tegra 3 automatically bumps up the contrast and dims the backlight, to save battery. This is a feature. To turn it off, either use a script or tricksterMOD (which is much easier).
[SIZE=+1]Q13: Battery life on this kernel/ROM sux. I've been using it for half an hour and its dropped 30% already. Why? Restoring to my old kernel..[/SIZE]
When you flash a new ROM/kernel, you need to give it a few battery cycles before battery is reported accurately. So, flash the new kernel, drain it (not necessarily to 0%), charge it fully, drain it again, charge, then play around. Do not complain about battery or anything without doing a few cycles first.
[SIZE=+1]Q14: I am about to flash another ROM. Do I have to full wipe or can I flash it on top? (Dirty flash).[/SIZE]
Usually you can probably dirty flash. But if it causes problems, don't report them. Best thing to do is to reflash the ROM with a full wipe and see if bugs persist. I always wipe when changing to a different ROM, but when updating a ROM i don't wipe usually.
[SIZE=+1]Q15: Should I unlock the bootloader when I get the tablet if I am going to root it anyway?.[/SIZE]
I would say no. Because, if there is a problem you have sort of voided your warranty. I like to keep my devices for a month without rooting/unlocking them in case there is a fault or something. You should do the same, I’d hate to have a brand new device, root it and then find a fault and have voided your warranty. Companies can be sneaky and can probably try to avoid fixing your device under warranty if you tamper with it. However you could always relock and revert to stock, but it is much easier to be patient and make sure there are no problems
[SIZE=+1]Q16: Will rooting my tablet make it faster/awesomer and have improve battery life?[/SIZE]
Short answer: no.
Long answer: nope.
Rooting alone will not change anything relateds to battery or performance. However custom ROMs, kernels and other mods will change things. For example flashing a more optimised kernel might improve performance, especially if you overclock it. Similarly, underclocking generally improves battery life. Of course it depends on what crap you have on your device too, but that's the general idea. Usually in the OP of a ROM/kernel thread, and in the comments you can get a good idea on whether it is optimized for battery, performance or a combination.

Wi-Fi (all models) = Nakasi - Grouper
3G/Wi-Fi = Nakasig - Tilapia
The Nakasi/Nakasig is the image (operating system)
and
the Grouper/Tilapia is the hardware build.
Because one of the files for the phone call apk is named "tilapia"

Yes, but it is preferable to use a special recovery for the tilapia. You will find 3 special recoveries for Tilapia.

Here are the rough guidelines as to what should be placed in "Original Development":
*Official release of highly original and upstream custom ROMs (built from the ground up with significant original development within them).
*Official releases/development of such original ROMs, perhaps posted by the maintainer or their nominated person.
*A significant "first" in development for a device. This is something which took considerable time/effort and is generally accepted by developers to be non-trivial.
*Kernels which are built with beneficial changes that are not simply pulled from other kernels already available.
*Tools and utilities with a clear purpose, and which are well-made, and useful to users. They should have an element of originality, either in purpose or through significant improvement in the means of operation.
*Significant port of a ROM from one device to another, giving enhanced features or functionality to the users of the target device.
All other development work goes into "Android Development".

I got my nexus 7 yesterday and updated it immediately to 4.2.1. All good so far. I start using and all goes well until I remember "this thing has the swipe keyboard, right?". I start swiping and nothing happens. Check the settings, it is on. Boot the device, no effect. Enable and disable the thing and boot the tablet a few times more, still no go.
At this point I decided I'll fix that later and made another user account for my GF to use. I immediately notice that the swipe typing works on that account just fine. I check the settings and looks like it's on by default. I go back to my own profile and check the settings again, but still no go.
Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip. I tried that, but settings crashes every time I try to enable the PC layout keyboard.
I'm gonna do a factory wipe since the tablet is still almost on default anyway.
edit: Ok did reset and everything works just fine now. Now just wait for play store to install all the apps back
I have just got my new Nexus 7 and I want to root my N7 with Wug's root toolkit. I was thinking if I just don't check the box: flash custom recovery. Can I then just do the OTA updates? Because I don't want to install a Custom Rom.
Hi guys!
Just got a stock unrooted unmodded N7 32GB with build JZO54K. On first boot it found the OTA update to 4.2.1 so I happily accepted the update. A few minutes into the upgrade process I get the "dead" droid with the triangle, guess something went wrong. It boots up again into JZO54K and works fine.
I can force another attempt at the update by stopping and clearing the data for Google Services Framework and searching for updates again, but with the same results.
Am I missing something? Would like to try pure AOSP before going CM on this little beauty
How to root Nexus 7 without toolkit?
Root Nexus 7 must flash the CWM or other recoveries? In the menu of "Google Nexus 7 TOOLKIT V4.0.0", I found the button "Root" and the check "and flash recovery...". Does it mean I can root the machine without flash any recovery? Thanks.

If you've only rooted you can do ota's. Just as long as you don't change ANYTHING in the /system partition like installing flashable zips

Sure its completely stock? If it is, it should work... If you be got any more troubles ask Google
If you want pure AOSP there are ROMs for that you can flash, if you root

You can root by having all the right superuser binaries etc
But its easier to flash the recovery, and then flash the latest superuser/ supersu zip.

I would recommend flashing the recovery in order to get everything working properly, and to easily recover if something goes wrong
I was wondering whether it's possible to share files between the different users of the same N7? For instance to make video or music files available regardless of who is logged in.
I don't seem to be able to find anyone even discussing this anywhere at all.

The closest option to that is Multi-User App Share. It doesn't have the ability to share files though. Maybe the creator will make it possible in a future update though

My escape route when in trouble!
Was reading thru some threads when I came across some newcomers crying out for help stuck in bootloops while flashing custom roms.
Since I was free.Thought maybe write my own experiences down and what I did to get out of trouble.
Hope this not so short essay help someone new to XDA.
Let me begin with ClockWorkMod recovery.
I for one,have installed two types of Recovery to be on the safe side.
Anyways having the two does not in anyway hinder either.
Therefore it is only and added advantage.
If that wasn't enough there are kernels which come with preinstalled CWM of their own.
At the moment I've got 3.
I switch roms very often.Many a times in the beggining I often made mistakes and always had to redo the whole procedure all over again.
That means from scratch.Flashing custom roms,rooting and then delve in CWM -
X-Parts by pvyPARTS
which I had to keep downloading again and again from market.
Real pain in the ass!
Now where did I stop in the procedure,yes,after CWM installation,fastboot flash the kernel and now use the CWM to flash the roms and the other zips.
Then came across another recovery tool.
RecoverX by LEDelete.
Awesome tool.Does the same more or less as X-Parts except you need to run this on your PC and bind it to your device.
Color is bright neon blue.Very nice visually.
So now what are my choices.Do I retain one and let go of the other.
Made some enquiries about having 2 recoveries.Feedback,no problems. Sweeeeet. I'll take both!
Then came the kernels with their own recoveries i. e -

Did the dancing act at the beginning and very stable versions now.

LreadyIt is good to see a senior member-op putting up a thread like this without being a know it all, smartass twat! I'm sure all the noobies will appreciate it! I personally worked it all out with a full month of reading. I have a bad temper and did not feel like getting abused and tyrated for asking perfectly legitimate questions! I say the same to all who are having probs and are new, keep reading,asking questions and don't give up! Six months ago I couldn't even navigate these forums properly, now I test Roms and kernels for devs! My biggest tip is find a kernel with CWM preinstalled and prerooted custom Roms! Remember one thing too, Titanium Backup is your best friend and is worth paying for the pro version! I don't like anything that isn't free but TB is worth the money!
To the OP here I think it would be good to insert a nit more detail on how to do these things and use these apps in your thread for those not in the know, maybe even some links! It's alot of work but I think noobies will be grateful! If you want some help to complete a noob friendly thread for flashing/rooting etc. PM me and I will help you write it up! We will prob get berated by others because of similar threads, but I have found them not noob friendly or incorrect! The only reason I still a junior member is because I have not bothered to make posts as have not had anything useful to say till recently!

Similar to the existing stickys, which are highly under utilized by new members, and as shown on a few occasions, by senior members too. Read Read Read, practice practice practice, is the only way anyone is going to learn, and I know because it's what I had to do for similar reasons to you when I knew absolutely nothing when I first joined, and if you're serious about learning how to tweak and mod Android then you need to be prepared to spend an hour or two sat at your computer, as you're not going to learn everything over night, in a week or even a month, and 3 years later you may still be learning, as I continue to.

Hello everyone
I am new to the forum so I am not sure if I am in the right place. I have rotted my xperia arc and I cannot install the CWM. I have tried through Xparts and through the RecoverX (RecoverX seems not to be able to download the recovery). I have done the same thing in the past without havin any probelems. This is the first time that I cannot install it. Any ideas?

Q... What is the first step in flashing a rom.
A... Backup of your boot.img or everything so you can safely return if a problem occurs.
Q... How do you flash a ROM?
A... ROM>gapps>kernel>root or alternatively if issues occur ROM>gapps>root>kernel
Q... Is a kernel/root necessary?
A... No on both I know one ROM that requires a kernel most don't reading the first page you will know. Root is only required if the ROM has force encryption and you don't want it or need root.
Q... How to unlock bootloader?
A... I'll link I'm a second post to motos website it has a detailed guide to do it through a few simple command promos.
Q... Where do I find all the features a ROM/kernel has?
A... The front page typically where the download button is at.
Q... How do I report a bug or problem?
A... Depends on the problem downloading a logcat app from the play store and sending the xml (text) is a good start. If more the bug isn't found there the dev is more then likely willing to help direct you to the files he needs.
Q... What tweaks do you use to get great battery life?
A... Honestly the phone has plenty but if you need that extra little juice the safest option would be using ex kernels power saving mode to dial down the core frequencies.
Q... Is the key n/a normal?

A... A backup could save the phone if put on an SD card. You'll need to format and lose all data stored on the phone other then SD card so be warned.
Q... What's the best ROM?
A... Only you can answer this each ROM is unique and has custom featured tailored to different people. Need bare bones los has it need more aokp among many others have it. You get the point honestly just try it and see backups help here too.
Q... Was this phone a good purchase?
A... Thanks to the devs yes it is. Moto has skimped on updates lately but we still have 7.1.X because of them.
Q... Why is this X ROM unstable?
A... The devs are working hard some phones need to have six months to get los to even work so patience none of these roms are really unstable. The htc 10 didn't have BT for months and on los the dialer didn't even work but now fully functioning. So rest assured every darn bug will be squashed in time.
Q... Is the above mention stuff risky?
A... If it voids warranty yes then it is. Android has come a long way and it is however much safer now then every before to flash and root phones if there's a problem there is typically a fix. I do recommend new users to read as much as possible on risks and how tos first this is only a brief guide to the world of customs.
Q... Where do I find an answer to a problem I have?
A... While I'll support as many questions as I can in here I'd like you to do something's first. Search a thread that has some relative info say a twrp issue search the twrp thread. If that doesn't help google it and see then. Spend just five or so minutes and if no luck then come ask away in here.
Q... Why research when I can ask a question?
A... This is mainly because the people helping don't want to repeat too many times. However a response from someone can take time and it may not even be the answer you need so to save you time a little research ahead of asking the question could speed up fixing the problem.
Q... If I flash a kernel will it mess with twrp or firmware?
A... Twrp has its own kernel it runs on so kernel shouldn't mess it up. However it does mess with boot imagines so it could potentially do that rho highly unlikely. Firmware nope nothing you do really messes with that
