Ipad 4 vs n7 2013 Screen comparison? - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Can anyone give us an impression of what to expect from the screen of the n7? Viewing angles, brightness and color reproduction?
I use my ipad primarily for reading because it's got the best screen in the business right now but I really hate ios. I'm really hoping Asus fixed the lag problems and the screen with this new one.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

I don't personally have it but reviews say the contrast and view angles are second to none. Hugely improved over the first generation and better than the ipad. The brigthness is also really high, over 500 nits compared to about 260 on the first generation.

Full brightness is blinding.

As long as you don't compare color saturation to the iPad. I am seriously underwhelmed by the flatness of the color on the new Nexus 7. Didn't think it could get worse than the previous model, but it did.

What about viewing angles? Some people are complaining about light bleed on the edges too

Perhaps it'll support the faux app to increase the saturation.

No light bleed for me and viewing angles are awesome.

Would you say brightness and viewing angles are on par with the s4?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

The brightness is so strong I don't think I'd go above two-thirds to max in the settings. Really enjoying mine - speed, brightness, app response.
Haven't done much with the camera yet.

Not an iPad 4 but next to an iPad Mini it looks really good but not surprising.

Ipad 4 and mini display are about on par when it comes to brightness and viewing angles. They only differ in pixel density.

Um...the color saturation is infinitely better than the previous version- AND the ipad.

Compared with the ipad mini, it's way better.

I don't know how anyone with eyes could say saturation is better than the iPad 3 or 4. If you turn up the brightness until your eyes bleed, the new Nexus 7 has better saturation than the previous. At lower usable brightness it is about the same or worse.
I keep waiting for an android tablet that will allow me to dump the iPad. This isn't it, and it will be going back to the store.

Brian Klug over at Anandtech will put up his review or data at some point this weekend and he will have a detailed analysis of the screen as well as data to compare with both the iPad mini and 4.

Nope. The problem is hardware related and not software. Even the entire transformer tablet line has the same issue. Everytime you try to do something in the background that is accessing storage everything just slows down.

Screen color quality compared to note 2 seems off.

I have a Galaxy Note 2 as well as this galaxy note tablet. I've been putting both devices side by side to compare screen quality amongst other things. I did a dead pixel test that would just display a full screen of different colors and when I did so I noticed that on the tablet colors seemed a little washed out like if there was too much white in the colors. For example when I would put the screen entirely red my note 2 would display a rich full red color like it's supposed to be shown and my tablet would show a red that seems like it was a little light in color as if there was like some type of white mixed in I'm not really sure how to describe it . I would like to know what other note 10.1 users think about this and if it's a problem with my device . If anyone has a note 2 or a galaxy s3 and is willing to compare color side by side to tell me if they notice any genetic difference like I do I would greatly appreciate it that way I can find out whether to take this thing back or not. This weekend I will be at Best Buy comparing but I wanted to post this first to see what kind of input I get. Thanks any thing will be greatly appreciated.

I have a N2 also and agree with you that the color temperature and tones are different. But I think the 10.1's colors are truer and without the exageration you typically get with (S)AMOLED displays. They are both good displays and I'm happy with both but, like someone above said, you can't compare an AMOLED display's color reproduction and contrast with any LCD display.

No I've tried this but the note 10.1 clearly shows significant differences in color. The colors look lighter. Even when streaming video or pictures things look so different compared to note 2s screen..its a bit of a bummer actually. I don't care as much while I'm on the tablet but when I look at my phone for anything its an immediate difference. Now I'm second thoughts bout the nexus 10. I love this note tho the multitasking is next level. But for the price the screen and creeky sounding build quality is getting to me.

Like already mentioned. You can't compare a LCD to a amoled display. The amoled display is renown for rich colors, so if you put the N2 beside the note
10.1 u will most certainly have nicer colors on the N2.

"Nicer" is very subjective! Some people like "bright and vivid" like on the Note 2. I prefer the more natural colours that I have on the Note 10.1 - especially for photos.
Each to his own!
Well apart from the n2. The nexus 7 also has those deeper richer colors. I'm aware of the differences in screens that cause the differences in color but just wanted to do some comparing since I spent 500$ on this bad boy.

Sry man, but it had to be like this, cause everybody know, (almost as I see) that the note 2 has the same hd superamoled technology like galaxy s3 and not PLS-LCD (samsung version of IPS) like the note 10.1. You just cant compare these 2^^ but I'm not the only one who's thinking that way.

Off topic.. Does anyone here notice the tablet makes those lil creek noises from the plastic body? I know its normal but man mine creeks so much with such little movement. Mine doesn't creak at all. I wonder if you got one with a build issue? You might want to try exchanging it.
For what it's worth, I have a Nexus 7 as well. I returned the first one because it had that screen lift issue. The 2nd one I decided to live with even though I think it has the faded color issue. It's so weird. The graphics are certainly less pixelated with my Nexus, but the less vibrant colors actually make my Note look better than the Nexus unless I'm peering at it really close up.

Well lets say I turn my phone on while I'm in a dark spot, so the brightness sets to low level, but then I enter a room with more light, or exit on the street so the brightness gets too low. Get it? I'd like to have the auto-brightness, otherwise I can set the level manually, as I'm used to.

I am maybe totally wrong, but on front side is camera, proximity sensor and third "circle" where could be light sensor???
We dont't have otg support by defaul, but it can wokrs so why not light sensor?
Some state it does, some that it does not. I believe it does not, since I dont see why sammy wouldn't include the sofware for it in the first place.

then why we have a otg hardware support but we can't enable it unless by a custom kernel

Oh, no. Even if you remove the device name checks from the updater-script and make it flash somehow, you're bricking it. Let the hardware be same. It will brick.

Ok so we need an ALS chip (ambient light sensor) somewhere on the mother board. If we have this we need to include in the kernel drivers, closest mach would be i8160. We might run an easy test with such a kernel and the display setting coded in to a rom from the same i8160.

Nexus 7 2nd generation FHD display

I got mine today from Amazon uk and I must say that I am a bit disappointed from the screen. I watched many reviews and all of them were talking for one of the best displays out there. Well they probably haven't seen Samsung galaxy tab 7.7 super amoled + magic. I will post a video later on with both devices playing a trailer from imdb.

I couldn't agree with you more. The Galaxy tab was retailing at 700 us while the nexus a fraction of that. However the amoled display on my "old" Sammy tab 7.7 is out of this world. The black and the color reproduction are just stunning. I was used to that display and the gnex looks to me a bit washed out. Other than that is is really great.
Sent from my GT-I9505G using Tapatalk 2
I suppose he is talking about the colours?
They are a little bit washed out and the white is a bit yellow when compared to my nexus 4 that has francos gamma settings applied.
However, when gamma controls are ported to the Nexus 7 the screen will look great with some tweaking.
Guys you do realise this screen is one of the few ones actually calibrated in the factory at two different stages and that the colours are accurate. What you see in the unfortunate Samsung models etc is a screen just with ridiculously saturated unrealistic colours. You guys need to train your eyes to see real quality...

Same here... I do know what OP is talking about but I don't see it as a bug.
@op I mean, if you slide it yourself, why would it automatically slide? I guess it'd make more sense if Samsung disabled manually sliding it. I think that they allow us to manually slide it though for those situations where we'd like to override it temporarily. Idk, I don't think it'll get fixed as it isn't actually a bug. Maybe they'll add an option to disable the slider while on auto.

BOE here. Has slight backlight bleed at top centre and has yellow white balance which I rectify in display options by setting to cool.
I am having tiama display. A bit blueish, but the screen is quite uniform overall. Quite impressed with display quality.
BOE's display is quite sharp though there is definitely a bit of yellowish tint. It is evident on websites with white backgrounds. Can't show you kernel details, I'm using AOSP ROM.

Tianma display.
Yellowish ones are on standard color and contrast setting.
Blue one is on "Cool" color and automatic contrast setting.
