Sony plans to deliver Android 4.3 upgrade to Xperia SP - Xperia SP General

So, Sony’s Jelly Bean 4.2 upgrade for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL is well underway* – next up, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z will start receiving 4.2 from early August.
Yesterday you probably saw Google announce the next version of Jelly Bean (Android 4.3) – we’re already getting stuck in and can confirm we’ll make 4.3 available for: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra…
We’re also looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1 direct to 4.3 – we’ll share more info / deets / timings when we can, so be sure to follow @sonymobileNews for all the latest.
If you fancy learning a little bit more about the technical side of our software development, check out Developer World’s latest piece on how we’re improving and refining our efforts to bring users new Android versions.
On that note, thank you for all the feedback on our Jelly Bean 4.1 rollout for Xperia 2012 products – we’re aware the process hasn’t been as succinct or as timely as you might’ve expected. As part of Developer World’s piece, Fredrik Ekstrand, our Head of Software Product Management, elaborates on some of the reasons for this, but essentially – we’ve heard your frustrations and are constantly improving the way we do things.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to be wrong They are currently doing big efforts to be efficient and that why I bought a sony device in the first place.
They are the first to reply at the google announce so I hope for the best.

I would like to suggest the DEV Team to pay special attention to the Camera and Audio quality on the latest Xperia 2013 line , Using the the exmor sensor and as it was hyped the quality is just horrible and unacceptable from a sony device.

Just release the AOSP for this! Then the "XDA Dev Team" *lol* can take over..
It owuld be much easier for them.

ICS upgrade available next week

Sony just revealed that remaining 2011 xperia smartphone will get upgraded to ICS 4.0.4 next week, except Xperia PLAY(poor u) in order not to affect gaming performance.
NXT series will get the upgrade in the order of S, P, and then U.
Now, we are happy to confirm that the remaining 2011 smartphones; Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will start to receive their updates starting from next week.
This software upgrade will be Android version 4.0.4 and the good news is that this latest version will also be made available for Xperia arc S, Xperia ray and Xperia neo V users, who received Android 4.0.3 the first time around.
In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.

Thanks for giving such a great news..
yea.. i saw xperia s running 4.0.4 few days ago..it was damn smooth though..
I was wondering the same question how will Sony fix the gaming problem on ICS for the Xperia play? And there is the answer may it be just for now, no ICS for play until the gaming problem is solved. Great news for my Arc S
is there any particular date for ics to come???
and thnxxxx for the news
bec just had a rom of android 4.0.4 and now only i had put the stock .62 fw for the ics
And Gud news is tat 4.0.4 wil be available for Arc S, Neo V and Ray which got a buggy 4.0.3 update. ;-)

Finally! I've been waiting for this for a while now and was jealous of the arc S, which received the ICS update earlier.
I'm hoping for a 'smooth' experience with 4.0.4. Any idea if we'd be getting a newer kernel?

probably this is the decision made by sony and the game vendors
This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users, along with game content providers following our ICS beta ROM for unlocked Xperia PLAY smartphones.

previously sony said ICS will still run with the obsolete kernel 2.6.32 in order to release ICS as quickly as possible in January. i just hope after 4-5 months of development they can release a 3.0 kernel in the near future.
we also see xperia s running ICS with 3.0.8 kernel, hope Sony or some skilled developer could port it to xperia arc?
It is rather quick to get a new kernel up and running, but it takes a lot of testing and validation to make it stable and run with the modem, get a good battery performance etc. Quite some effort has been put in to the Sony Ericsson 2.6.32 kernel, to make it as stable and reliable as possible for the 8255 platform, and we do not feel that the user benefit of a new kernel would justify a later release date.

Sony ' investigating' Jelly Bean for all devices

Info suggesting no 2011 Xperias would get Jelly Bean was given "in error."
In a statement on its official product blog, Sony has reassured Xperia smartphone owners that it's still in the process of investigating which of its devices will receive updates to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The statement follows earlier reports, originating from one the company's own Facebook pages that 2011 Xperia handsets like the Xperia Arc and Xperia Mini Pro would not be getting updated.
The manufacturer said --
"During a Q&A session last week on our Sony Mobile GB Facebook page, a local spokesperson gave information out in error on our Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software development and rollout for 2011 Xperia smartphones.
"We are actively investigating Android OS upgrades for all devices, but in the meantime, our Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Xperia S and 2011 Xperia smartphones continues as planned."

I think that too ,JB is not a major update just a few performance tweaks here and there.
Maybe its just a marketing strategy to make people buy Sony phones and then in the end moment they'll disregard the 2011 devices.

Sony(Ericsson) Did not disregard their customers from updates, Sony is one of manufacturers who's really into updating their Portfolio to the latest Android versions, look at their Update History compared to any manufacturers
2010
X8/X10mini: 1.6 > 2.1.1
X10: 1.6 > 2.1.1 > 2.3.2
2011
Xperia/Live: 2.3.2 > 2.3.3 > 2.3.4 > 4.0.3 > 4.0.4 > 4.1(?)
2012
Xperia: 2.3.7 > 4.0.4 > 4.1(?)
Right now, 2011 Xperia is one of the most updated Android Phones out there, and I believe they can be updated to 4.1
Awsome PR!!

My nexus S got 2x faster and smoother with jelly bean. My mums arc S on ICS is faster than nexus S on ICS but not the nexus S on JB. That tells you how significant a thing jelly bean is it is designed to make every phone smoother not just the high end ones. If nexus S with 512MB ram can run it so well then the arc S surely deserves it. it will become a beast with jelly bean.
Let's hope Sony don't make a mess of it. Official ICS hardly fills me with confidence!

Android 4.2.2 Certified

Hi folks,
Some of you may have noticed that Android 4.2.2 JellyBean has been certified through PTCRB for our device (SGP321).
More on XperiaBlog, but can't be too long now. http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/06/2...e-certified-for-xperia-tablet-z-10-3-a-0-407/
Will be interesting to see if the UI changes on the Z are also on the Tablet Z.
Based on how the Xperia Z and ZL were updated, I doubt that Sony will change the UI.
But we can. Once the system dump leaks.
Edit: I thought you talking about the Z Ultra. My bad.
Thats great news, im placing my bets on sony making a come back with quality devices, software, and support

I doubt they well. It's one of the good things they have going on
heard the interface has become much more smoother on 422 but not many changes in UI etc. no multi user support either.
Please no phablet UI Sony. It's one of the things i hated about my Nexus 7 and why i put PA on it straight away.
I tried CM10.1 on my Z Tab yesterday and couldn't stand the phablet ui. It's just so unintuitive and wastes space.
I hope they'll release or at least "leak" it soon. The current firmware is quite stable and fast, but the slightly laggy UI and the mediaserver bug (has nothing to do with Sony, well known problem within 4.1.2) need to be ironed out.
Xperia Tablet Z to received 4.2.2 from early August. So could be as early as next week:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/07/2...ia-zr-to-get-android-4-2-2-from-early-august/
Don't celebrate too early.
On Xperia Z the 4.2.2 update is buggy...
It's well possible that it could be better to remain on 4.1.2 until some dev releases a usable 4.2.2 custom ROM with the device-specific features intact.

Can't people just be happy that support for this phone has not been dropped (yet), instead of complaining about timescales for release of the promised updates?
I thought people on these forums are a little more in the know than most places and would realise that it's not a fast process to prepare, test and release an update that isn't completely broken/full of bugs.
I guess I was wrong lol.

Come on, you know this could be much much quicker of Sony would give this priority.

The developers here do a fantastic job and I have massive respect for everything they do for the modding/Android community. Several devices of mine have had their useful lives extended greatly because of people on XDA.
However, they are not under the same constraints as the devs that work for Sony.
Sony's devs will be under strict developmental, testing and qa constraints and cannot release updates with bugs and rely on people providing bug reports/logcats to fix said bugs after the fact. They have to release software with all features working and with minimal bugs.
Not to mention all the red tape/paperwork they no doubt have to deal with and the other devices that all need maintaining. I would also imagine that the budget for maintaining older devices is dwarfed by the budget for new devices.
It's also worth noting that a lot of the devs good work on XDA is only possible because of blobs/binaries provided by Sony's devs in the first place.

Sony releases an update with a camera app that takes 4 sec to open and everyone loses sleep over it while some1 here releases an update with wifi issues, screen on delays etc, they get praise for the device bring up which gets labeled as 1st release. lol
Obviously Sony cant depend on rapid development and recoveries and backups and all the fancy stuff we do when we get into issues when it relates to the average android user who by the phone and occasionally plug it in for PC companion to update and that's it. When wifi stops working no one is gonna say " oh this is a first release. They will fix it soon". People take back the devices and swap brands like that. Consumers are a fickle bunch.
Also as I have always said to myself , AOSP is the most barebones and feature lacking kind of experience out there. Android has matured a lot since the froyo gingerbread days and so have the OEM modifications. The reason I decided on the XZ against the N4. I am one willing to sacrifice smoothness for functionality any day. My Z is still stock and I will probably keep it that way til the EOL is reached. I came from the LG O2x which got ICS in December/January so trust me when is say I can wait lol.

I agree, I think we all know they could have done this even 2 months ago. But do consider, they have to put in all bugs and make the OS laggy...you know how hard a job that is?

Like I said... They made money already. Why would they spend more?
You know how much its costing them to pay 1 second-grade developer and 4 trainees so they could have a running upgrade dept? $120 a day! Thats too much for them.
(sorry for the ranting sarcasm...moving on...)

There is nothing teased, it's just the news they put up.
Real question is, who cares?
I have seen no difference with kitkat and 4.2. apart from google now, now on the left. so I am not excited at all. The apptray needs the border removed on the Z, also camera improvements welcome.

Overall Performance seems better on KK. The difference between ART and dalvik is pretty big in some apps aswell. 4.3 brings trim.
The camera however ... Not so sure about that. I doubt they will even update the camera stuff. Why bother spending time and money optimizing an old flagships camera when people can just buy the New flagship with a camera that is advertised to be incredible? That's how a big company works. Time is money. Sad reality.

SONY XPERIA Z IS GETTING THE Android 5.0 Lollipop

"We’re bringing Android 5.0; Lollipop to the entire Xperia Z Series " SAID SONY today !!!
"You’ve probably seen Google unveil Android version 5.0; Lollipop…
Since the initial reveal of the Android “L” Developer Preview, we’ve seen lots of questions on our upgrade roadmap about our plans – so, here goes…
We’ll be making Sony Mobile’s Android “L” upgrade available for the entire premium Z series*: including Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Sony Z Ultra Google Play edition devices will be first up – we’ll be back with more details on that soon.
We’ll start the upgrade at beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series – continuing thereafter for all remaining devices above.
We’ve been working hard to bring this major update to as many of our Z Series devices as we can, as quickly as we can. We’re really excited about the new Sony features & functionality and the improvements we’ve made to the user experience – and we’ll be sharing more soon… so stay tuned to the blog and @SonyMobileNews for all the latest and greatest.
*Software rollouts are a phased process – timings & availability will vary by market/operator. Most models supported but some operator/market exceptions will apply"

All hail Sony!
Awesome that we are still getting the update. :good:
The Z is one of the best supported devices by Sony. I was happy with this unbelievable phone for 18 month and just bought an Z3 as a support for Sony great work. Keep it up
If I'm happy? yes.
But too bad we gonna get it about a year after the official release, just like every Android update =\
Wow that is awesome sony is the best:good:

4.4.4 released the 19th of June. We got it the beginning of September, well ahead of many other OEM's devices. Less than 3 months to bring up, produce, test, certify and release. Great going by Sony.
They could promise to support this device for the next 5 years and some people would still be negative.

I'm actually shocked. Didn't expect another update whatsoever. Not that I'll probably make use of it due to my new upgrade in the new year but I'm happy that this phone is not being dropped

Beginning could be the first 3 months of next year and then you have to wait 2 or 3 months more , just like with 4.4.4.
So probably in half a year you will have Lollipop 5..0.
Anytime sooner will be better, leys just be happy we got 4.4.4 at all and that now the 5.0 is comming.

Maybe like KitKat. We receive 4.4 on May

How about UI?
Its really a great news indeed. Thankful to Sony for their continuous support to Z especially.
Google's Android 5.0 Lollipop is completely a new UI, well known as Material design. Sony and other OEMs will build their own Stock ROM and interface. Now my question is, which may be too early to ask but yet a thought came in.. Will they retain L's material design? or they going to continue with their UI.
Well time can answer, will wait and see!
