30 Pin Connector BS - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) General

given that the note 8 is pretty much just a shrunken down galaxy note 10.1 (and so is the g note 2) it pretty much proves that the 30 pin connector the gn10.1 an all the other galaxy tablets use is just a big money grab. there isn't a faster charge rate with the 30 pin vs the mUSB nor is transferring files any faster. it's possible that in the future the 30 pin will have some benefits (i doubt it since usb 3.0 is pretty dang nice), but for now mUSB cables are working pretty fine. i've never had a transfer saturate the USB 2.0 cable anyways.
for ref, my gn10.1 generally charged ~1600mAh and transferred files around 10MB/s through usb 2.0, same as my gn8, gn2 and s4.

The Note 8.0 is an over grown Note 2.0
The Note 10.1 is an overgrown Note 1.0
30 pin is dead, long live micro usb. The NEW tab 3s also use Micro USB.
30 pin was unreliable at anything more than 3 feet. Try finding a good 5 foot one for sync and charge at the same time.

If you reread the OP you will "hopefully" see that he is referring to the Note 10.0 and previous Samsung Tablets that had the 30 pin connector.
He is basically saying ( a month ago ) what everyone knew all along, that proprietary connectors are used mainly to get you to buy the same companies accessories. Cables, Docks ext.

Must say the micro usb connection was the thing that swayed me to sell my Note 10.1 and replace it with the Note 8.0. I use the 8 much more since its smaller and easier to carry around too.

I was actually on the verge of buying another 10.1 but decided to see what comes next. I hope it's gonna use musb and USB 3.0 since it'll charge faster via USB then. until those details pop up I'll hold on to the spare 30 pins I have.
I just bought a sero 7 pro and it's about the same size as the gn8. I haven't had a 7 in tablet in a while and iI'm surprised how usable they've become in the last 2 years. I also got my daughter a memo pad HD 7.

LG Nexus 4 - Do you have to buy wireless charging part seperately?

Do you have to buy wireless charging part seprately?
Looking to buy Nexus 4, there is already one bad thing about the phone - storage. If it doesn't come with wireless charging part, it will make me choose between note 2 and this.. which I'm thinking note 2 might be better, besides the fact that its pure android, Google wallet, better camera, 4.7 screen... note 2 has multi tasking. Which will be nice. But a little big.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
I guess you will have to buy it seperate but i don´t think multitasking should be a reason to buy the Galaxy Note 2 because im pretty sure we are going to get it as mod on our nexus.
I was just saying that was one of the nicer features. I didnt feel like giving a full summary on both phones.
But it is between those two.

According to 3G.co.uk, the Nexus 4 actually comes with a wireless charging mat. Yayyyyyyy -

" One advantage the Nexus 4 has over its major rivals is support for wireless charging, which isn't supported on the iPhone 5 or the Galaxy SIII. A wireless charging mat is included in the retail box , so you don't event have to buy an extra accessory to use the feature."
But whether they know, or just guessing - I don't know.

I won't get my hopes up.
It doesn't mention anything about a mat in the play store:
What's In The Box
Nexus 4 phone
USB sync/charge cable
AC Adapter and cable
SIM ejection tool
Safety and Warranty information
Quick start guide
I think it is seperate
I think from the Verge's hands on video it sounds like it will be a separate accessory you purchase. Since the price is already decently priced I don't think Google will include the charge orb for free.

Charging mat thing sounds cooler to me.
I doubt it will come with the mat. However, it would be very nice, since they use a standardized wireless charging method.
They didn't even give basic headphone so no for the wireless charger

For Three in Denmark (And i think Sweden as well) the Wireless Charging is listed as an "extra bonus" for those preordering, it has a value of 599DKK (79€) and will be sent in december.
So it's definitely an accessory not part of the retail bundling, but it may be that the Wireless Charger is included in non-google play preorders to offset the issue of the device being much cheaper on the Play Store.

My Note 8.0 N5100 (My first tablet)

Almost after 3 years since the tablets hit the world, I bought my first one. Now you all must think I have been living under a cave or something all this time.
But then truth is that although I like the idea of a Tablet, there just wasn't any real use for me all this time for a Tablet. Also the better ones like the 10 inch iPads and other tabs were just too big for mobile usage, 7 inches a bit small (why not just get a phablet?)
The Laptop and the netbook served my sedentary needs very well.
But why now?
Partly because I want one and also because my mom(Doctor turned Biology teacher) also needs to use it sometimes for teaching purpose, annotating Pdf's, drawing some biology diagrams etc.
and clearly nothing can do better annotation than the note series from Samsung. The styluses on other devices(capacitive) are clearly not nearly as good.
So went out to buy the Note 10.1 in march( even though it was a bit too big). Clearly, it worked well with the S-pen and mom also seemed at ease using it, but that problem of size was there and that coupled with the high price for a tv-out adapter(Mom would need to connect it to a projector as well) and the high price of the tablet itself (The only version sold in India is the 3G 16 GB at about 650 USD.
But then came across a news about the note 8.0, lighter and a more orthodox MICROUSB, decided to wait for the same.
In the meantime, Samsung even came out with a pretty awesome discount scheme of up to 15% on the note 10.1, but somehow my heart didn't listen.
Kept waiting, device was launched in the USA, reviews were out which were very very positive. The device came up for pre order at Rs 30,900, but I had to get a good hands-on before spending so much (damn no good return policy here in India).
Then I had a big exam coming up. (For entrance into a Medical College) Then went the same evening on the lookout for this device. After searching in vain at a number of stores, finally found at one shop. But the seller didn't have a demo unit. Damn...It was right there.
Kept calling up a few shops for availability and demo units. When I finally got some time, finally bought it on the May 19th. Interesting thing though, I was so frustrated by this point that I just used the phone arena . com size tool and I was ready to pay up the cash, but to my surprise as I walked in the store there was spanking new demo unit installed, just picked it up and knew that it is the perfect size. Did a bit of bargaining and actually got the device at Rs 29,000 (about 40 USD less than the pre order price)
The device has been working great. Feels very light in the hand. I wanted to connect it to a VGA projector, and there has been a quite a lot of work at it. I had to order a total of 5 items on eBay before finally getting it to work. Even now it sometimes gives a weird and different resolutions. Sometimes VGA resolution and sometimes 720p.But at least it works!
Looking to buy more accessories for this product.

note 8.0 is a clever choose.
Well, my mother had the Asus Transformer 300 for 6 months and love it until she cracked the screen and could operate it anymore. Since I bought it for her, I felt obligated to replace it. I gave her 3 choices: the iPad, another Transformer 300, or Note 10.1. After sending her a plethora of YouTube video on all three, she wanted the Note 10.1!!! She loves it and I get a chance to mess around with it in the process. So much so, that I just ordered myself the Note 8.0!!!

Took the plunges and brought my self a note 8 too after looking at all the option. I was planning to wait for updated nexus 7.
The s pen sold me. Using the tablet as education toys for my kids it is great. The only letdown is the battery life which last slightly more than a day of usage.
I also put nova launcher on note 8 which standardize the look and feel across multiple device making my life easier. All the s pen features and multi screen still work under different launcher.
Note8 using normal interface rather than tablet interface also helps the transitions as all my purchase apps works well on note as well as my phone.

Galaxy Note 2 and now 8.0 overkill?

I've been looking at tablets for the past month as I'm taking college courses (yes I'm 40 but close to being done) thus fall. Like all over you I feel I've owned almost every tablet other than the Windows platforms.
My desires were nice screen, note taking ability, nice sound, expandability, and some longevity.
My favorite of the ipads androids was the Galaxy Note 10.1. The wacom stylus and speed were super. I got rid of it because it felt a little big and I would forget it when I needed it.
I thought hard about the Surface especially with the price cut, but I have an i5 laptop so it seemed redundant. The new Nexus sure has a great speed camera and sound. But no expandability and not feasible to take notes. But it would do nothing more than be an entertainment device and I own a Galaxy Note 2 that does that pretty well.
So last night after weeks of reviews and pluses and minuses I found a GN 8.0 for 300.00 with free ship and brand new in box. I just jumped on impulse and bought it.
My issues with the 10.1 was it was large and a fuzzy screen. So I am thinking the GN 8.0 the screen should be less fuzzy as less real estate but big enough to take notes and hopefully small enough to remember.
Then this morning I woke up and realized I just spent 300.00 on a 3 inch bigger Note.
The deal itself is a good one. The question is after this long story is Have I over killed the Note by getting just a little bit bigger???

I think the Note 2 and 8.0 compliment each other nicely. I currently use both, and despite what some think about the "phablet," it's definitely a phone. Reading, web browsing, video watching, and many other experiences are much better on a larger display. You made a great choice IMO.

I sold my note 2 and ipad 4 and replaced them both with the note 8 n5100 with sim, so far im very pleased the note 8 does everything, ive got a 64gb sd card, my vodaphone sim so i can surf text and take calls everywhere on just one device, without tethering or messing about, i swapped to the note 8 as one device as a test, but even with some great phablets due out at the end of this year surrendering my note 8 for a smaller faster phablet will still be a hard to do.
My previous favourite was also the note 10.1, but i now prefer my note 8!

worth it/
I believe as long as you do some mods to the note 8.0 its worth keeping. First change the layout to tablet not the phablet form it comes with. Then a nice change of launcher and I believe its very useful. Synch them both up to each other and you have a useable note taking tablet with lots of memory. I have imported 4 school books into Snote and works very well. The screen is a good enough size to do reading and the note taking is much better on the 8 then it ever was on the note 2. I use note 2 to take down numbers and little hints but as a study instrument the note 8.0 is only choice is you need stylus.

Totally agree. Lol, and I did the same as the OP, bought my note 8 on a whim because I found a good deal, then wondered if I had made a mistake 2 hours later. I can say I don't regret my purchase one bit. For me the note 2 is a PERFECT phone. Great performance, great battery life, and what I now consider to be an ideal size screen for a phone. That being said, I find the note 2 useless for taking any kind of notes. The only time I use the spen is for annotating the odd photo. I just find it a little too small (especially for a lefty) to be as quick or efficient as a pen and paper. When I tried a bit of note taking on the note 8, it was a night and day difference. As far as the screen, it won't make you say "wow" like an htc one , but you probably won't be disappointed with it either. I would describe it as perfectly acceptable. I don't think you'll regret your purchase.

Note 8 and note 2
I have both and am very happy with them. I use the note 8 to take notes at lectures and my note 2 for calls and entertainment.
Thanks to all. After thinking it to death and obsessing finally some common sense crept in. I love my Note 2 and use it all the time but mainly for texting and looking at fb and YouTube. I may use the stylus once a month but wouldn't trade my phone. I have a 64gb sandisk with tons of movies yet never watch them. Oooh. I love taking pictures with this phone. So easy and good quality.
I am so thinking the movies ebooks and stylus use will increase with the Note 8.0.
Thanks for talking me off the ledge a bit. The one thing that resonated from people here and other threads is the nexus 7 is solid but almost too small while the 8.0 was bigger but not 10.1 or notebook big. That's kind of what went through my mind when I made the purchase.

I have an OG Note and the Note 8, and I can safely say it's not overkill. I love both, and there is some overlap, but for the most part, I use the devices very differently.
I have both the Note II and 8. The Note II has always been handy in my daily commute, and the Note 8 when you sit to do a bit of work or at home.
At times needed, I connect the II onto a projector, and with RemoDroid mirror-cast whatever I have on my Note 8's screen. It's great for presentations and drawing demonstrations. There's a bit of stutter, but it works.
Android is so much better than the competition.

[Q] Should I buy this or the Note 10.1 (2014)?

I have the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 which charges and syncs using a USB 3 port. I have an old 1-gen Galaxy Tab 10.1 which use to read documents and sometimes read news like on my Note 3. I have both the note 3 and note pro, I personally like the extra few inches on screen because it is good for textbook reading and good for note taking. The note 10.1 2014 is a lot cheaper, so if you use cost as a factor, get the note 10.1 2014. I got the note pro 64GB when it was 849, now it is down to 799 for the 64GB, about 9GB is used for system storage on the note pro. The flip board ui is actually nice, but it limits your home screens on the normal TouchWiz UI. The office is really handy as well, but all depends on what you use it for.

USB 3.0 doesn't affect charging on either the N3 or the N12. Its only value is faster data transfer times to/from a USB 3.0 Windows PC. The S-800 devices charge faster but it's because of Qualcomm's QuickCharge chip, not USB 3.0.
The Galaxy Note 3 ships with USB 3.0, unfortunately at least in its current state it doesn't seem to get any benefit from the interface. Although the internal eMMC is capable of being read from at ~100MB/s, sustained transfers from the device over adb averaged around 30MB/s regardless of whether or not I connected the Note 3 to a USB 2.0 or 3.0 host.
Update: USB 3.0 does work on the Note 3, but only when connected to a Windows PC with USB 3.0. Doing so brings up a new option in the "USB Computer Connection" picker with USB 3.0 as an option. Ticking this alerts you that using USB 3.0 might interfere with calls and data, but then switches over. Connection transfer speed is indeed faster in this mode as well, like you'd expect.
Charging is an interesting story on the Note 3, but primarily because of what doesn’t change. The Note 3 continues to use Samsung’s tablet charging specification and charger, which has 2 amps of maximum output. The Note 3 draws 2 amps over a considerable amount of the charging curve, like other Samsung devices (in the linear part of the charge curve). USB 3.0 doesn’t change things up here quite yet with the new supported charge voltages that are coming eventually with the power delivery specification.

USB 3.0 doesn’t change things up here quite yet with the new supported charge voltages that are coming eventually with the power delivery specification.

Well I have tested a mini USB 2.0 cable on my Note 3 for charging, and my exprience is that it took almost and hour extra to charge my Note 3 using a Micro USB 2 cable than the Micro USB 3 cable which came with the phone.
Doesnt the quick charge need usb 3.0 to work? I would get the 12.2 the 10.1 feels so miniscule now and the 12.2 is miles ahead in usability

And I bet it's a non-Samsung cable you're using. Someone posted charging times with Apple and HTC cables/chargers and they were longer because the device was pulling less amperage. My N3 charges just as fast using Samsung 2.0 cables as it does with the 3.0 cable included.

No. It's S-800 related, not USB related.
I Know its the S-800 but I haven't seen anything but the Note 3 and galaxy tabs with 3.0 AND S-800 Claiming to use the feature. None of the others using the chip claim to support quick charge AFAIK . Maybe reviewers just overlook it?

@Euroman28 I have both and will be putting the Note 10.1 2014 with a boatload of accessories up for sale. That should tell you which I prefer.
When I first got the Pro, it was so much bigger and heavier than my 10.1. I decided to make the 10.1 my couch tablet and the Pro my work tablet.
Two weeks later, and my 10.1 sits untouched for the past three days. The only use it's gotten in the past week is my daughter using Sketchbook.
The 10.1 has its advantages - it's much lighter, easier to hold in one hand, and for games with on screen thumb controls, the 10.1 is light enough for extended gaming.
Everything else? The Pro owns. Remote Desktop, comics, magazines, video, browsing - you name it, and it's better on the Pro. Sketchbook is much better too because there's more area to rest your hand.
I had been saying I'd get the 10.1 if I had to choose because it's a better all around package. But in the past week I've done a 180.
Been there done that, moving on with my 12.2 Note .
Peace and blessings,
Azeke

I have both the note 3 and note pro, I personally like the extra few inches on screen because it is good for textbook reading and good for note taking. The note 10.1 2014 is a lot cheaper, so if you use cost as a factor, get the note 10.1 2014. I got the note pro 64GB when it was 849, now it is down to 799 for the 64GB, about 9GB is used for system storage on the note pro. The flip board ui is actually nice, but it limits your home screens on the normal TouchWiz UI. The office is really handy as well, but all depends on what you use it for.

You can actually pick up the note pro 12.2 for 599(32 GB)/699(64 GB) from Costco.

I think it really depends upon what you value more. Portability or sheer capability, the Note 10.1 is a highly capable tablet which is also fairly portable, the 12.2 on the other hand benefits from an even larger screen and is even more capable than the 10.1 but it suffers with portability.

I've considered the 10.1". But it simply feels too small for me. I'm one of those people who prefers usability over portability (As evidenced by my 17.3" laptop and my 5.7" Note 3), and the 12.2" is absolutely perfect. (Well no, I would've prefered an AMOLED screen, but alas, those don't exist in that size. So perfect by what's available.).
The 12.2" simply offers more. Bigger screen, more screensize (which really matters when you're multitaksing, typing, reading, watching a film, browsing or gaming.) and more usability. I can now read a magazine in full size, or use a full-sized A4 notepad (well, minus a cm or so) for my sketching and note taking. With films I no longer have to squint at the screen to see what's going on. I watched LOTR3 Extended Bluray on this thing last night. Brilliant, it's a portable TV!
Not to mention using it for navigation (When someone else is driving. We have a shared hatred for TomTom and other speaking navigation systems. I can read a bloody map, ta.). To have that much screen space is a true delight!
I don't get why people say it's not portable though. I use it during my extensive commute (7.5h a day), and I've not once had a moment where it felt too big to handle. The only times I couldn't use it was when changing trains, and I wouldn't even use my phone during that time for risk of theft or damage. (Am I the only one who's always afraid it'll fall onto the tracks when boarding the train?).
I don't think it's too big. My hands are fairly small (women glove size 6) but I can hold this comfortably on the train or sofa without it becoming too heavy.
I tried using my 10.1" TF700 yesterday as well. God no, I am never using anything that small again!

I have an alternate opinion. I have a note 8 already , and got a note 10.1 2014 recently from Costco. They’ve also dropped the price on the 12.2 lately, it’s only about 80$ more than the note 10.1, so I purchased it with the intention of possibly replacing the note 10. (Still within the 90 day window)
I use my note in an office, for taking meeting minutes and random surfing when I have a min. The note 12.2 is big. It looks almost as big as a 14’ Laptop screen, so in effect I look ridiculous carrying it around. It looks like I have an extra personal laptop at my desk. Plus with that size factor I’m seriously inclined to look at a Windows 8 tablet which I can use as a proper PC. (Yes, I know it is more expensive)
If I were planning to use this only at home and use only the note 8 at the office, I would keep it in a heartbeat. However, I’m planning to retire the note 8, so the 10.1 is a compromise that works in both places.
My 12.2 also has the screen flickering issue, so it would need to go back anyway. I don’t see myself getting a replacement...
Just goes to show that samsung is right to flood the market with choices.

Understandably so. It is, after all, a matter of personal preference. You have to use your tablet, not anyone else. So you should buy the one you prefer, not what someone else prefers.
It also matter what you do at the office and at home as to wether it is useful. Whilst I find a thousand uses for it as a designer, I can easily imagine someone with a less creative occupation would not find as much use for a tablet of this size, and would prefer something more portable. I need the extra screen landscape, but others do not per se.
I often use it as a fourth screen. My laptop's and two 22" monitors are the main setup, with the tablet as a secondary system. One screen for Photoshop, one for Indesign/Illustrator, one for Bridge(the laptop) and my tablet serves as my internet/sketching system. The advantage of that is that with two split systems, the impact on the hardware is less severe. (because Photoshop + Indesign + Bridge is a VERY big resource hog. It makes Skyrim at Ultra look like notepad.)
I do often get reactions that I look ridiculous with a tablet this big, yes. I honestly can't be bothered to care. It's MY tablet, not theirs. I have to use it, not them. What they think is so unimportant it's an entirely different planet. I did not buy the tablet for them. Then again, I also get a lot of reactions from people who really like the size of it.
For entertainment and artistic purposes, it's a perfect size. For non-artistic and non-media use, not so much. For corporate use, it would depend on the kind of job.
Although one does look quite retarded taking pictures with it. :silly:
I really do like the idea of the Surface with full Windows 8. The thing about it that puts me off faster than a pair of crocks is the Intel HD 4400.
I refuse to pay 2000 euro for rubbish that should've been banned from the market a decade ago. (I would want the best one as a laptop replacement for my Gaming needs as well. And Skyrim, Dragon Age, Mirror's Edge or Mass Effect on an Intel HD GPU = Nope.)
If they bring us the Surface 4 one with a serious Nvidia, I'd be willing to give up the Wacom pen. That would be one hell of a powerhouse! I would so buy that...

Very much so. There are 7 billion people and potential customers on the planet, it is corporate suicide to assume everyone is identical and wants the same thing for the same reasons and use it the same. It's a mistake that's going to bite Apple in the arse soon enough.
You catch more fish with a wide net than with a single hook.
USB 3 works better than expected.
Note 10.1
I did a couple experiments with the Note 10.1 2014, trying to get it to work correctly before giving up entirely. Using either the Samsung charger/cable or the aftermarket one, the tablet would always discharge when the screen was on. Slowly, albeit, but i need a device that can work and charge at the same time. I tried turning down the brightness and switching off the wi-fi, but it had the same results: the battery would keep draining.
Note Pro
I returned the 10.1 2014 and, with some trepidation, got the Note Pro as a replacement. I was pleasantly surprised: with USB 3 and a half-decent charger, it charges during use. I tried using a generic Amazon USB cable with equally beneficial results. The charger should be 2.1A, but most high-powered, tablet-based ones should do. That's pretty cool, considering I can get a 6-foot USB 3 cable for about $8.
There is something about USB 3 that lets the Note Pro charge faster. I'd recommend it for any "power" users.
I own the note 10.1 2014 - its a great tablet easy to carry around due to the size - it is my go to tablet and very quick once you install the xkat rom and xluco kernel - I also own the 8.4 pro also a great tablet - this one is running cm11 - and much more portable then even the note 10.1, I am picking up a note 12.2 tomorrow - bought a used one at a great price and while I don't need all 3 tablets I will probably keep 2 of them, just not sure which 2 yet - I am thinking it will be the 12.2 and 8.4 but you never know  my only concern right now is that there are no custom roms for the note pro 12.2 and I really don't like running stock

It looks terrific to me, although I was hoping it would have a 7422 instead of a 7420. I never upgrade right away, though. I always wait until the price comes down. By that time, we'll know if it turned out to be a error in judgement on design or a lemon of a phone.

However.... I will buy one and if I don't like it I will go back to the note 4.

I was pretty much following it for kicks and giggles, just to keep track. I'm only a year into my Note4, which means I won't upgrade till Note 6ish anyway.
Put it in a case and it becomes a sub par Note 4
Note 4 all the way. I'll wait for something better.
If for any reason I would want to get the note 5, it would be because of the wireless charge fast charging. But it looks like sprint might be dropping spark, only LTE?

Same screen resolution, smaller battery with no Micro SD. I don't understand the direction Samsung is headed. Every phone I have ever had people complain about battery life. What's the solution with a internal battery? Constantly tethered to the wall or a huge ridiculous case with an extra external power source built in? Fail Sammy, fail.
I dont understand so many threads about this note 5 in a note 4 forum. I mean, personally im waiting for the new nexus device, im not going to make a thread in the note 4 forum tho.
Should probably take it to the note 5 forum instead.
Just my 2 cents.
It's one of the best ? out there

Yep that's pretty neat for sure.
There are a lot of things I like about the Note 5, and you CAN get a 128 GB model for Sprint, contrary to what many websites are saying. But I'm still not going to upgrade. Maybe when the prices drop, but I'll probably wait to see what the Note 6 is like. I never swap my battery and I don't care about missing the microSD card. I'd rather have the UFS 2.0 storage, so those things aren't holding me back. I'm just happy with my Note 4.
Well.. I like doing a battery pull when things get iffy. As far as having an SD card slot or not is not really a big deal to me. I have a Samsung 32g SD card now that's not even 1/3 full. Between Sirius /XM and Pandora I don't download a lot of music. I use my SD card for pictures and my necessary rooting/modding files. And with having a "cloud" to store stuff and thumb drives and USB cables the storage will still be endless. As with all other tech.. It evolves. My 2 cents..

Note followers never complained about built quality because our phones stay in cases. Galaxy followers wanted a android iphone so samsung gave it to them . But why didn't they just have a regular version with sd and removable battery and one with a higher built quality and they could have ditched the s6 plus idea until the s7 plus . That would of worked 4 months ago. Owell I'll get the s6 plus and if i don't like it wife might have a new phone. Note 5 don't do nothing for me atleast the s6plus bring something different. I'll see what apple do before i dive in they might surprise me but every year a disappointment.
