[Q] Switching back and forth between nandroid backups - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

Is it ok to frequently switch between backed up nandroids? For example... switching between 2 different ROMS (CM10.1 and a TW Rom)?
Is this a totally safe practice?
Thanks

yes..that is the whole point of backups and restores
just make sure you wipe before it and not do dirty flashes

Is that even if your backups are for ROMs both on different versions of Android?

Make sure you back up the boot partition also since different versions of Android use different kernels. It would be wise to keep a zip file of the kernels on you sdcard so you can flash them easily if the phone doesn't boot up after a backup.

Search for "noobdev dual boot" on this forum. I believe it is a much more convenient solution than using backups and a lot of roms are supported

Which Kernels? How do I get a zip of them? excuse my ignorance but I've never really got involved with them so the above means nothing to me. Any useful links would be gratefully received!

Did you give a shot to the dual boot I linked above?

I had a quick look at that useful link but was hoping to just try another Rom first as if I find a reliable one I'd probably stick to that.
The way my luck works, the more I tinker the more that goes wrong

The great thing about the dual boot is that you can switch between roms in a matter of 2 minutes (install excluded)
Typically I use it so I have my daily driver and one or two roms I want to give a try. Once I am happy with one of the try-outs I upgrade the primary.
Bottom line is the dual boot is very easy to work with, doesn't require (although it can be preferable to have one once every now and then) backups and allow for easy flashing of new roms without affecting your daily driver.
It damn well looks like you could use such convenience because if your ready to do what you listed above then I'd say you're likely to want to try new roms fairly often

I thought I understood this stuff but maybe I don't. CWM is just recovery, and doesn't run on a kernel, no? I have CWM installed and can flash any kernel, yes?

Every recovery has a kernel in it. It needs that to work properly. The kernel inside of it though can be different then the one you use with Android.
Seems to work perfectly. Thanks!

Haha as long as you wont be using your 3g radio in recovery you'll do fine blazingwolf reports that the nandroid features are broken so be aware of that

Lack of nandroid is a bit too barebones for me, but once that's working I'm in.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Far too many individuals violate the GPL and it's awesome to see someone work with it rather than against it.

I'm with this guy, though I must say that I appreciate the effort from randomblame. Following the rules and doing things properly leads to things that WORK properly. Thor's roms and recovery have issues, however useful they may be.
Great!
I have other android devices and was turned off by some people in the a500 community not following the law (by not complying with software licenses). I thought XDA had a policy about that, but maybe it is not applied to everyone.
As a software developer my self (mainly non-android) I was shocked by the actions of those parties breaking the law.
It is great to see people stepping up to fix the problem. Thanks for your work.
EDIT: I see people are removing thor's links from forum posts. Thats good. I remember seeing several over the past 6 months, maybe I saw them before they were removed. It is good to see people taking piracy seriously.

Im having some problems and i knew you guys would be perfect. Any help would be great! ok so my wife has a mytouch 4g and it comes preloaded with so much crap on it, she got fed up one day and asked me to "do my stuff to it." Meaning... root and rom it. so i rooted and flashed a sense 4.0 rom (cant remember the name) but found out the camera doesnt work. then decided to flash paranoidandroid rom. great rom but now her phone randomly turns off (always at inconvenient times). battery became garbage. will be full then half then dead within minutes. decided to factory reset. no change. unrooted and put it competely back to stock. still no change. shes gets pissed off and i hear about it everytime it turns off. so maybe you guys can save my life. any idea why its doing this and/or what i can do to fix this? thanks in advance!

You were a member since 2010.. Please read the FAQs and rules. Her battery might be old, consider buying a new HTC battery for her.
Try rerooting and installing a different, stable ROM. Currently, I'm using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629962 as a daily driver with the frosted cherry kernel. Again, please post this in Q&A, not in development. Hope everything goes well.

The free version is only the installer. The paid version of 4EXT installer has a few more features in the app, but let's you choose from the same recoveries.
1. Get one of the apps.
2. Install the latest 4EXT Recovery Touch.
3. Profit
I have a feeling after you use the recovery you won't mind buying the paid app. I didn't. It's worth it to donate for something as fantastic as 4EXT.
Thanks again, estallings15! You're always very helpful to glacier community
I installed it and thought it really nice. I think I won't use app features, but I'll buy it to contribute to the future of 4ext indeed
Another question, Is there any known incompatibility with any glacier rom?

Not in my experience. It fact, quite the contrary. Many have reported problems with ROMs flashed through CWM Recovery. Upon switching to 4EXT and flashing the same ROMs the problems cease. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Also, you're quite welcome.

Now I'm rooted, what next?

So I took a big leap and rooted my tablet this morning. I've installed Titanium Backup and GMD Gesture, and also AdAway and AppQuarantine. What other great things can I do? I love trying new things. Any suggestions from you experts? I would be very grateful!

Download and do either of the following for a full backup...
the best way to do a complete and full backup of your device.. There are two methods
1 most common
download ROM MANAGER
you can from in this app install a custom recovery on your device..
Boot into the custom recovery and do a full anand backup. you can also flash other custom roms (custom android os)
2 what i use..
download goo manager beta from play store
in go manager click menu at top choose install open source recovery . follow prompts . It will download and install
same as step one you can boot into recovery from goo manager Its big botton fully touch base . And you can backup and restore as well as flash custom roms...
NOW WITH THE ABOVE SAID PLEASE READ thru the forums related to roms rom manager Custom recoveries .. and so on .. this will save you some troubles later .. anything you need to know or not understand Just ask We are here to help.
Cool, thanks! Could you point me to the best place for explanations about roms? XDA is huge and I am not sure where to look... Cheers!

To find roms on xda
Xda is a very organized web site for the most part finding them is easy. deciding which one is not so much
rom actually means read only memory.. But we will skip the tech stuff for now..
Here on the device development forums Rom is referred to mostly as a custom built Operating system for your device .
these can be built by one person or a team of developers . Most have tweaks and customization's a bit above and beyond the stock experience. ITS BEST before flashing any new rom is to into the forum thread of the rom read developer info and the comments made on the thread. Many roms have experimental software apps and tweaks.. Not all roms are perfectly stable..SO FINDING one that has what you are looking for is just a matter of reading and trial and error.
Most roms. well all you see anymore Come with a kernel. (The linux part of android .. Kinda whats under the hood) . Be sure to pay attention to this and the information. Some add features some over clock .
we have here for the n7 several types of roms .
original development .. these are based on the custom operating system pushed by google
custom based on the above but often has alot more customization's and kernel tweaks More likely to have buggs . but often faster and take up less storage space on device.. as well as having a personal twist for the developer on apps installed customization's and themes
I never give advice on what to use just go in the development section and start reading .
Be sure before you flash anything on your tablet know what it is and how to get out of it Back to stock and Have your backups backed up...
ALWAYS HAVE A WAY OUT FIRST..
Good Luck
So I am now on Paranoid Android, trying out the different Workspaces. Thanks for the help!
But I don't understand what Paranoid Android does. What does "This rom lets you scale and project every app, every widget, even systemcomponents individually" mean in every day language?
Also, could someone explain where, in tablet mode, the three dots are for the settings of many apps. They seem to be covered by the status bar. How does one access them? Would be grateful for help as I really like the small tablet mode.

[q]aokp q & a

I figured I'd start a thread for this ROM.
My first question or bug report not sure which...
When turning on 2G networks only, it changes preferred networks to GSM only.
Makes sense.
Only problem is when coming out of 2g only mode, it changes the preferred network to wcdma not LTE.
There a way to change that or that just how its designed?
Thanks.

In the mean time, may I ask if sdxc 64gb cards are supported in exfat? My stock rom had no problems with it but aokp won't mount it saying, "blank or unrecognized card."

Twrp still reads it because it's a 4.2.2 aosp problem (I'm pretty sure at least). I am curious if formatting the card would help but I doubt it b/c it didn't help on 4.2.2 on the s3. It's a minor inconvenience but personally I'm just glad to get TW off this thing. Thanks Task! I didn't think the first build would be really buggy or anything but I did expect some minor issues on the first build. Couldn't have been more wrong though, is so fast and stable it's not even funny.

Easy as Pie to flash task roms it already has the kernel in it. it's full proof!
Does it takes some time for the Task650 ROM to fully leverage and use the battery to its maximun potential?, with the Stock TW ROM I was getting around 0.5[%/hr] battery usage/drainage with the phone fully idle, measured by BetterBatteryStats, right now I am getting around 3.5[%/hr] battery usage/drainage with Task650 AOKP ROM, comments are welcome, thanks
NOTE: I've been measuring Deep Sleep with CPU Spy and with BOTH ROMs Deep Sleep will be around 93% to 97%

I'm actually running Revolution! Fantastic rom. I didn't have any trouble flashing it, but I'm sure some people have. Just make sure to do a backup before flashing

Thanks anyway.
I need to really confirm this before I flash it.
Oh...I am such a big noob.
Can you pls look around the Revolution HD 9.0 thread and and confirm if you got time? My net is so slow and I am on a win mobile phone...hard to go through 200 pages!
Greatly appreciate you for your concern.

Yeah, Just a sec
EDIT: I think it's working. I didn't find anyone that was having a problem anymore. The rom is based on the 3G version firmware, so I doubt you would have trouble.

I have rooted it finally using the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 ToolKit (I chose TWRP custom recovery as it is touch/button based)
Then I did a full backup of the device using Nandroid TWRP
Then, just to be safe, I also did an EFS backup using EFS Professional.
I am just playing around and installing apps and games before I flash the Revolution HD 9.0 rom.
Thanks for the help!
