Interesting OS (good to see sandbox being used for android apps). Not interested in the phone hardware itself.

This on tablets or any larger phone with a good development community. Probably timing wise it might work well on the new nexus phone which should be cutting edge tech and if it follows the N4 prices quite cheap too.
I wouldn't mind seeing this on a more premium looking device like the HTC One.

I also think that it would be nice on a big display. And because there aren't any buttons on the screen there is a lot of room for the content.
But I do like the Jolla phone.

i don't think we will see this device on big devices like "htc one". in fact we will never get it publicly on any android device for a long time. i'm sure that they will want to see their devices selling first.
only n950 and n9 has that chance and even that might be a pain in the butt.
btw the development emulator on acer w500 tablet: http://vimeo.com/62061963
some pictures from different devices:
nexus 7
n950, jolla & nexus 7

I agree with you. I also don't think that we will see it on different devices. And from what I understand, the interface that Jolla uses isn't open source. Or something like that.
But I do think that HTC should use a different OS, like SailfishOS. Then they have something different. That is how they got popular with android, because they were the first.
And thanks for the pics, I will add them to the first post tomorrow

also, people can still use this os without the ui. there is nemo mobile and it's open source. if they want it so much they should try to port nemo mobile instead of waiting for something that will not happen.

No ROM has even been released yet, so there is no point speculating. The phone that will probably get it first is Jolla's phone, and the Nokia N9*

It's innovative and a breath of fresh air. After using the N9 for a couple years, then getting a chance to use an iPhone 4/5 for a couple years (company issued), and now after trying Android for over a year, I find both iOS and Android less intuitive than MeeGo -- I initially kept swiping to switch and close apps LOL.
I'm not sure how the pully menu system will feel in everyday usage, but at least it's innovative.

The pulley menu has sound and vibration. So you should really "feel" that your using it. I also think that this is an innovative way to use a menu instead of something on the screen like Android. This way there is more room for the content

Good point...it allows the UI elements to get out of the way huh.

I reckon it will be something like keyboard haptics + sound (and I assuming people will be able to disable both to extend battery life).

I really like the look and feel of the OS

I can tell you that after you get used to navigating the phone with you thumb it gets really natural. You don't need to "reach" to activate UI elements.

Pawned a couple things to buy the Xoom... regret it?/?

so i was finally able to afford the wifi only Xoom, and i knew i wanted it over the ipad. Reason being, I have a HTC Evo and before that i had an HTC Hero.I've rooted them and flashed them with diferent roms, kernels, themes, and all that good stuff that we can do on our "open source" OS that IOS cannot. butttttttttttttt........
after playing with the Xoom for the past 2 days i kind of do not feel satisfied. Main reason for this is the apps.... i love using apps... Android seems to have less than 100 tablet optimized apps and that really sucks for me. its been a month and a half since the release of the xoom.
things making me want to keep it:
-sd card
-very customizible (if thats a word)
-i tethered to evo and it was blazing fast on 3g
-not wanting to be like everyone else that gets an ipad
-eventually i guess.. more free apps
-camera has led flash
-youtube app
etc...
and just because its freekin Android... (gotta love it)
things making me want to get an ipad2:
-currently has more apps
-even though it has lower resolution screen looks better
-faster response when flickin
advice??
ps.
how much longer till we get about 1000 apps?
Serious advice: sell/return it and get the iPad.
Reason for advice: Nevermind that you can use loads of current mobile apps on the Xoom, if what you're looking for is a buttload of tablet apps then an Android tablet is not for you... yet.
the apps will eventually find their way on the xoom and other android tablets. Remember when you first got your Hero how many apps there were? OK there were more than 100 but the number of apps has grown exponentially over the past 2 years as more and more people acquired android smartphones. The same will go for the tablet - and as more and more ppl acquire android tablets the bigger the market for developers and the more apps we will find. Developers will need the honeycomb sdk to optimise their apps for the platform and whenever it gets out to them we will see the number of apps grow exponentially too. It may take another 6 months or so for our favourite android apps to become tablet-optimised.... And what matters to me is not the number of apps but their quality: I don't need 100 fart apps on my tablet and if you look at your smartphone you'd realise you only use a small number of apps (up to 30 maybe?). It is those apps that have to find their way on the tablet platform, I don't care much about the other ones I'll never use. Whenever they do, you'll be far more satisfied with your device. In the end it's all down to us and our commitment to the platform. if there's no market for developers there won't be any quality apps for us to play with.
Or just do what I did and buy a xoom and an iPad 2...
haha
I know I was annoyed that a lot of the non-tablet optimized apps appeared shrunk on the Xoom screen (with the fixed dimensions of a phone); but after downloading Spare Parts and disabling compatibility mode having the apps fill out the entire screen makes these apps look less awkward.
Get the ipad. Android isn't about the apps. Its good because apps aren't needed to make the device functional. Its good because it has a full browser and file system and its good to tinker with. If you simply want apps apps apps then it isn't the platform for you
Wow... i dont want and ipad...but thanks for the encouragement. Lol
Thanks Sejanus for informing me about spare parts... instead of telling me to go buy an Ipad u actually made me love my Xoom even more..
Advantages of having a Xoom are more and better than having an ipad. Like i pointed out in the first post.

Hmmm, you also pointed out in the first post that you were not satisfied with the Xoom because of a lack of apps and that one of the reasons you would like to get an iPad was because it had more apps. I'm not seeing your logic in your second post.
I don't have an agenda with a specific OS, people should get what they like.
Anyway, it's good that you're not going down the route of evil
Here's what android 3.0 aka honeycomb will look like soon

But seriously, I think if you need mega apps right now and you can't wait a few more months for Honeycomb apps to appear return the Xoom and get a ipad 2(or even an ipad if you want to go cheaper route), but if you want more then just apps Xoom is what you should keep. Also remember google apps(ex. maps, navigation, etc) will always be perfected on Android before iOS stuff.
I pawned one of my nuts ... hell, God gave me two!
Can I point out that I'm a developer on the android platform and I'm currently working on a Honeycomb app at home, and once we cover the beaurocracy, our company will be releasing honeycomb / tablet optimised apps too.
Also, these apps can and have at times taken 2+ months to build from the ground up.
Honeycomb is a huge difference from previous versions in terms of the application design and workflow.
You need patience for these things. If you want something quick that's optimised specially I'm sure I can throw a couple of apps together, iamrich or a nice multicolour screen torch, or something in 5 minutes...

Is CM7 too good?

So I just got CM7 beta installed and the communications lady at my place of business comes to my desk and says "Oh, you have the Atrix? Do you want me to order you a lapdock for it?"
Sucks to be me, right?
I had her order the thing because we are doing a lot of cool stuff with citrix receiver and how awesome would it be if I could have an atrix running Windows via citrix reciever
But now -- I cant bring myself to remove CM7. I've thought about it many times.
I've been in recovery with my finger hovering over the button to flash back to stock GB
But I love CM7 too much. I don't want to go back to blur.
It would be like -- having an Atrix and the someone telling you you had to use this HTC Incredible 2 instead.
I think I have the solution. I am going to go back to the communications lady and request a 2nd Atrix -- for testing purposes only of course.

I like CM7, but I actually miss some of the crap that Moto put in the Atrix rom. And the webtop. Most of the time it's fairly useless, but when I need it, it's golden. And the Citrix Receiver is awesome, I have fun explaining to everyone that the phone is the laptop (just like those stupid ads).

OMFG. Do you have job openings? I can do marketing. Will work for free tech and free pizza.
I don't see what the CM7 rave is all about. I've had too many Android phones to list and I tried CM on all of them. It serves a good purpose for phones which are slow to get updated or don't have any good custom roms, but I don't see the purpose with the Atrix as I felt the same way with the Evo and Evo 3D. The loss of certain functionality isn't worth it in my opinion. I don't have a lapdock, but being able to go somewhere and plug in the HDMI and have an easy no nonsense way of playing music, videos and pictures. Motoblur is not intrusive either like Sense can be at times.
I'm just offering my opinion and not trying to start an arguement, but I truely want to know why so many people "must" use it. Am I missing something? I used it for two days until I went to watch a movie and only had HDMI mirroring with no landscape support. I must say battery life and performance was great, but it's not bad on Alien rom either though.
For informations, I really like that
Searching the web and accompanying the operation with a friend, I see that there are some outstanding issues to resolve, as the case of battery and FM radio. But, in the future, I wish to install on my Xperia X10 Mini Pro.

CM7 just seems snappier, Im guessing because there are fewer processes running. That being said, I ran Alien prior to CM7 and I have been running Alien ever since I originally posted this (i caved because I really wanted to try out the lapdock) and I agree, That rom is very fast compared to the stock GB, thanks to kennethpen's work.
Keep in mind its still beta

Completely agreed. I admit I use it for phones like the BACKFLIP and the CLIQ XT. Phones that are slow and buggy stock and need to be cleaned up or have major driver/coding issues. But the atrix? Stock 2.3.4 rooted debloated is an absolute dream: silky smooth, insanely fast, and 20 hour battery life. And lapdock STILL works.
I think it's kind of like Google Chrome or Firefox. Even though IE9 flies and does everything correctly on win 7 ultimate x64 and a quadcore with a good graphics card...people still use Chrome or Firefox. Just that whole rebellious don't let the man put you down type mentality.

except IE9 is so much better when it comes to css3 and gpu aided html5. and other than that, almost the exact same resources footprint. oh, and try twitter on chrome and look at your cpu load, then do it on ie9 and compare..also..ie9 doesn't change my registry, chrome does, in many ways, and they DON'T TELL YOU IT DOES.
if it's really about speed, opera destroys chrome, firefox, and IE.
and if it's about usability, I've never seen a better browser than safari.
can't really say anything about CM7. At this point I simply don't see why I want it on my atrix. the new blur launcher is way lighter than adw.

The beauty of Android is that you don't have to use the packaged launcher if you don't like it. That goes for any ROM that packages a non stock Android launcher.
The nice thing about CM7, besides being one of the more popular ROMs, is that there are a lot of developers for it and in most cases it runs better than the stock ROM. When the vendor stops supporting the phone, the CM devs keep going.
I've used CM across 3 different phones and in all cases it was superior to stock, even on my Atrix which is still in beta. Now I do miss the fingerprint reader and having audio out work through the car dock but these will eventually get added.

Software buttons, were they really necessary?

I would just like to mention that the optimus g (the phone which the nexus 4 is based on) has soft keys instead of software keys unlike on the nexus 4.
Here are a few reasons why i wouldn't prefer software buttons.
- They can get easily pressed by mistake while using apps or if your phone doesn't have a lock screen.
- The nexus 4 it's self has a 4.7" display, but because of the software buttons it downgraded it to about between 4.5" to 4.55" which is really a bummer for me. (I do know that they disappear while previewing photos/videos, not that it matters).
- If the screen cracks, the software keys might stop functioning. And as you guys know the nexus 4 is very close from being a pure glass made device.
I'm not saying it's as bad, from the price aspect it's totally a worthy device! In comparison to other phones in this price range. But if they would've pushed it a little bit further it could've been the ultimate phone.
Might've been a few more things i did not mention.

It`s already flawless for people that know phones and technology....
I had the same concerns but I have found myself liking them, mainly for google now and the multitasking button. It has make my life a bit easier for example at the gym where I switch from my spreadsheet to my timer to my music app.
It also cleans up the phone nicely and if phones started adopting it more it would make it more consistent across platforms instead of every phone having the buttons placed differently.
One question I have is if Dev's have access to remove them in games for example, the games I play don't do this and I wonder if it's the dev's fault or a limitation of Android.
I don't mind the screen it takes, and IMO the Nexus screen is prefect size, the S3 is too big for me for example.

It actully says in brackets on the picture "not really" but since the resolution is so small your not even able to see it, sorry about that.

On ROMs like AOKP they'll probably start implementing the "hide nav bar" feature as one of the power menu options and that should make gaming more enjoyable

Yep, Developers have the ability to remove the onscreen buttons when playing games. I don't understand why a lot of them don't though.

What they should implement is that you'll have the choise through settings to choose if you want to remove the onscreen buttons on certain apps.
Like you stated, games for example!

THey probably don't want to put in the extra work since the majority of devices don't use it anyway
Google made it clear over a year ago they were moving away from soft keys, the GNex was the first, so I don't know why this is such a big shock to everyone that this phone doesn't have them. If you need them so bad then don't buy another Nexus phone because they will never have them.
I like them because of the customizability

I actually quite like the on-screen buttons. the lack of capacitive buttons, provides a good area to place the thumb when holding in landscape.
I accidently press the home button on the ipad quite a number of times.
No issues here. I got used to them quickly. I think it looks nicer than hardware/cap buttons.

You're describing paranoid android there. That allows you to hide the nav bars for specific apps and make them automatically come back up when you quit the app

I came from a Galaxy S and I really miss the search button. It's unfortunate that not enough people realized its utility, so Google just removed one of the best shortcut buttons in any phone. I used to run fullscreen browsers and used gestures to switch, close, and open tabs. The search button was the easiest and fastest way to pull up the address bar when in fullscreen, and had the added benefit of being right next to the keyboard so my thumbs would already be in position to type in a search term or URL. I am waiting for ParanoidAndroid to implement the same kind of nav bar customization options seen on Roman's AOKP ROM. Then, I'd probably only use 2 buttons: back and recents. Long press back would go home, and long press recent would function as search. I would only use 2 because, well, you can see below how I'm using software keys. I miss capacitive buttons due to the increased screen area, but since i consolidated the nav bar and notification bar, it's not an issue. ParanoidAndroid's customization of nav bar color and appearance does make the app experience slightly better, and since the notification bar is a constant, why not have the software keys there as well?

Yeah, its kind of a bummer that they are using software buttons. Although the HTC phones use software buttons, but they are outside of the screen.
Wonder if Nexus 7 and 10 have the same soft buttons....

[Review] Find 5: A great surprise!

So I just got my hands on the device a couple hours ago, and this is so great I felt the need to write a review immediately.
When I heard the name "oppo", and saw that company from China, I wasn't expecting something spectacular. It had good specs on the paper, but in my mind I was thinking "Meh, it will be just a blown up chinese device". Well, I'm glad to say I was wrong!
The package
Opened the first cardboard box. This first one looked like a shoebox, pretty amusing at first, and inside is contained the actual device box. And there came the first great surprise: it's already original. The box actually unfolds, seated by a magnet. You then get your eyes on the phone, and under it you can find the classic accessories (earbuds, charger, USB) PLUS! Two programmable NFC tags. Nice little gift.

The device itself
The device itself is pretty standard:
- On the top of the front, you can find the front camera, earpiece, and a notification LED. Other sensors are pretty hidden, which make it very clean. On the bottom, 3 touch keys that light up when the screen is on (and they're otherwise invisible), from left to right Menu, Home and Back. Since I'm used to Nexus 4 touchkeys, the back key is on the other side.
- The back is also clean, similar to some HTCs. A simple and small camera sensor on the top, a tiny hole for the 2nd microphone next to it, a big speaker at the bottom, and that's it. There's a subtle "oppo" logo written in the middle, and I'm wondering right now if they shouldn't rotate that logo, as it's written vertically, thus you're not sure if it's "oddo" or "oppo", especially if you're holding it in landscape the wrong way.
- On the left side, the SIM tray, similar (if not exactly the same) to the Nexus 4 one ; you need a small extractor tool to open it, and under it the power button.
- On the right side, just the two volume buttons.
On the top lays the headphone jack, and the USB on the bottom.
All the buttons feels super sturdy and well-made, there's little to no jankiness. A sturdy device. The design is original and you cannot say "what's that iPhone" when seeing it.
Turning it on
Duuh, a boot sound, I hate that.
Okay first, the screen is GORGEOUS. I never had the chance to see another 1080p screen in a phone yet, but the Find 5's one is definitely one of the best screens I've seen. It doesn't have burning colors like AMOLED, and has just the right contrast. The viewing angles are way better than Nexus 4's (which gives blue if you look from one side, or yellow from another side), to put it straight there's simply no color offset at all from any angle. There a very small contrast increase when you look from the bottom or the top at a high angle, but you really have to be looking for it. The resolution is just great, it's beautiful.
Classic connectivity. I don't have my SIM card in yet, but it has all the things you'd need: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC (with a little tool to write some features to the provided tags), support for Wi-Fi Display, Wi-Fi Direct, etc. Of course, they use the normal NFC protocol, so you can Beam with your friends having a Nexus. The Wi-Fi reception seems pretty good, no loss of speed anywhere in my house.
Now, one big downside, the software. Actually, it feels like TouchWiz, and god knows I hate TouchWiz. It's like having a Galaxy S, with iOS-like icons (rounded glossy squares) and the same exact style of app drawer. The settings menu has been revamped, and it's a big mess. Everything feels just unsorted and messy, there no logical way to find out a particular option. And the Developer Settings menu lacks 90% of options.
The notification bar puts Wi-Fi and 3G on the left, notifications on the right (just like an iPhone). The top of the notification drawer is the Jelly Bean one, and JUST underneath you get gray gradients with quick settings icons (just like TouchWiz, again), and a old-style notification list, with the clear button at the bottom.
In the gallery, the Android's Action Bar has been removed to put a small shortcuts bar at the bottom, iOS-styled once again. The contacts app is also TouchWizy.
You can find some extra features in the settings, like gestures and motions to pick up a call.
There sure are some good ideas from Oppo's software designers, but they really took a direction waaaay too straight towards iOS (now, did I say TouchWiz because I'm not used to see them on an iPhone originally? Heh). Take the same color scheme, but with Holo design, and you'll be an epic win for me.
Wait, it's not all! Camera time!
From what I could see previously, it's no surprise that the Camera software is also not spectacular. It has that same iPhone inspiration, and both the UI and UX are very perfectible. The settings cannot be naturally scrolled, and it's a bit bad to use.
However, the Camera hardware is pretty great, at least on the video part. You can record the classic 480p, 720p and 1080p resolutions with the back camera, and 120fps video in either slow-motion or at regular speed in 480p resolution. This is something never seen before, and sports fan will probably like it, as you can record things moving fast in a smooth slow-motion.
The front camera allows recording in 720p, and has a pretty good lighting.
For pictures, even though both front and back support HDR, the quality is not spectacular. It's in the range of most phones, at least in medium-low light. The image is pretty noisy and grainy, and a bit blurry even when focusing as best as possible.
A sample from the back camera (click to enlarge):

Wrap-up
From a hardware point of view, the Find 5 is really awesome: great SoC (same as Nexus 4) with 2GB RAM, superb screen, nice speakers, notification LED, nice camera, original design, and the touchkeys are ideally positioned. It's a sturdy device, that tells you "I can live forever".
However, the software really lacks polishing (but CyanogenMod will take care of that, hehe). You can smell the iPhone inspiration everywhere, and it just breaks the Android experience as all the other apps behave differently than the system. Some apps like the Settings app has been revamped and became a mess, but there are some nice ideas like the Files app, having an okay design, and cool features like FTP or DLNA.
All in all, that's a 8.5/10 for me, because I know the software won't last long on my device. It's really worth the price. The back camera could be a little bit better when it comes to pictures, and a little refinement of the device shape (especially some edges) would make it even better, but I'm nitpicking.
If you want it, don't hesitate, you should get it.
Thanks friend.

I'm not quite ready for a review yet - But here's some observations regarding their software, from a development perspective:
First, a bit of background - Qualcomm devices are almost always derived, to some degree, from Qualcomm's reference source at CodeAurora, aka CAF.
https://www.codeaurora.org/gitweb/quic/la/
A good way to determine which CAF release tag a manufacturer used was to check out various tags from https://www.codeaurora.org/gitweb/quic/la/?p=kernel/msm.git;a=summary , drop the manufacturer's source release on top, and find the CAF tag that produces the smallest diff after dropping the source on top.
A list of CAF tags (which can sometimes be quite outdated, but is good enough for our purposes) is at https://www.codeaurora.org/xwiki/bin/QAEP/release
In the case of the Find5 - they derived from CAF tag A8064AAAAANLYA101034 - which is fairly old (October 2012). It's on branch jb_rel_rb4 Oppo didn't merge in upstream CAF changes at all in the interim. Sony's Xperia Z kernels were based on A8064AAAAANLYA1334, which is only about a month newer date-wise, but is at least Android 4.1.2 instead of 4.1.1
A8064AAAAANLYA101034 is a tag along the jb_rel_rb4 branch
Oppo's kernel produces a diff against the base CAF tag that is only about 583k in size - this is pretty small (good news!)
I'm in the process of pushing these diffs as a reference to https://github.com/Entropy512/kernel_find5_reference - NOTE: I will NOT be doing any development in that particular repo, AND I may rebase it periodically. It is for REFERENCE ONLY.
Attached is a complete patchset against the above tag, generated using
Code:
git format-patch
EDITED: Previously I thought the base CAF tag was A8064AAAAANLYA103010 - this is wrong.
Thanks for the review xplodwold! Its kinda cool to hear your take on it.

Bootloader seems wide open.
Biggest "quirk", which doesn't take too long to figure out, is that you need to add Oppo's USB vendor ID (0x22d9) to ~/.android/adb_usb.ini (that's on Linux, not sure which Windows/MacOS equivalents are...)

Yes ,yes ,yes ,yes and yes .
What a great news, I'm a oppo find 5 owner, now very pleased by your great job to bring us third part ROM!!!!!
I've taken a break from find5 to try and get camera working on the Sony Xperia Z using a trick pointed out to me by one of the other CM maintainers.
If this works, it means that instead of starting with a massive kernel rebase, we can use the same approach the Z maintainers are currently using for their bringup (bring patches from mako into the factory kernel) and then do a major kernel rebase later.
The method used to do bringup on the Z is much faster, however it was previously thought it would not be possible to get camera working without some major hacks. Now it looks like there may be an easier (although still a bit hacky...) solution - if it works on the Z, that'll be a good path to go on this device.

[Discussion] The LG G5 discussion thread

Hello LG G5 users , feel free to talk here about anything related to the LG G5 :good:

So what do you think about this LG phone ?
Hi guys , thread opened thanks to @KennyG123 , now that the G5 is out and available for sale feel free to share your experience in this discussion thread.
I will update it later with infos , reviews , battery tests..etc.
Enjoy
This is my first impression of the G5 and I'm sure once the stock and custom roms start rolling out I will have a much better experience with my phone. I picked up my new LG G5 a hour ago from my local Sprint retailer and I have already run into a few problems that kind of bother me about the phone. I switched from my Nexus 6 to this phone and I would have to say I do enjoy the feel of the phone and the fact of it being smaller and easier to hold. This is the only good thing I have really noticed about the phone so far though. The volume rocker on the left side of the phone seems very strange and would be much more ergonomic with it remaining on the back or on the right side to be easily accessible with the thumb. The G5 does not have an app drawer with the current software even though there were leaks saying that they were actually going to end up adding the app drawer for this phone. The software seems as if it went for a more Apple style design with a more vivid color scheme. I ended up looking through some of the apps and there are advertisements in the voicemail app which just seems wrong. I have already ran into a bug which should be expected with any new release of a phone of course and this bug happens when I double tap on a notification on the lock screen it locks the screen instead of opening the application which I really hope wasn't the intended purpose. So far the phone isn't as great as I expected it to be.
@CorruptProfile Thank you very much sir for this first well detailed feedback.
How about other things like the camera , performance ( if you tried any intensive game ) ? Is it buttery smooth or LG 5.0 UX suffer from lags ?

I only really play Clash of Clans as far as game intensive on my phone and it ran very smoothly for the little bit that I was on it. The camera is far superior to any phone I have had in the past and the quality is great. The option for the regular launcher with an app drawer does not exist on my device which is no problem since I do not like the launcher in general and the Google Now Launcher is far superior to LG's. The biggest problem I have started to see with the device now is the fact the battery is weak as can be. I'm not sure if there isn't enough data collected yet to give an accurate estimate on how long the battery will last. I took the first screenshot of the battery usage before I used any high usage applications and it already was showing that my phone would last an hour and 47 minutes when it was at 41%. I would add screenshots to this but, I don't have over 10 posts yet so that isn't possible so I sent them to @Soufiansky so he can post them instead.

I don't own a module and I don't really see the purpose of owning one to be completely honest. It's basically just buying add-ons if you prefer having them or not. I enjoy having the naked look of a sleek looking phone without having a bunch of stuff all over it. It really comes down to the person if they want the parts or not and personally I don't the parts won't make the phone any worse and if the modules really just fail then it won't have any overall effect on the performance of the phone itself.

No i was talking about the stock battery module , you haven't faced any issue ? Because some people were reporting bad screen colors reproduction next to the module , others said it started taking off....etc.
