Best car stereo for Galaxy S4? (ARLiberator, MirrorLink, etc) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Is anybody here using any advanced car stereos with their Android phone? (i.e. Galaxy S4)
My stereo supports iPhone and lets me browse artists, etc, but it only supports USB mass storage for Android and it's extremely limited.
However, I've seen pretty neat options using AppRadio 2 (and ARLiberator for screen mirroring) and MirrorLink...
What do you guys recommend?

I use my S4 as the head unit it works well for me since it's eye level while my car stereo is far below eye level.
If I had access to a double din opening closer to eye level then I'd go with a Car-PC instead. And use the S4 only as a modem.
Otherwise the AppRadio3 from Pioneer with appliberator would be my 3rd choice.

I use the sound fly BT transmitter for my car, it supports listing song names on my radio.
Might not be what you're going for, as a transmitter I highly recommend it though

I have a Navigation Pioneer unit in my car and stream music through Bluetooth and it works great.

Pioneer AVIC D3 with BT (works great) in her car
Pioneer AVH-X8500BHS (also works great) in my car
standard Porsche BT in cayman s (has some issues staying connected)

I use a Kenwood X996. They just had a recent FW upgrade which seems to have improved BT, but now it doesn't play at the highest quality sometimes and has been skipping lately.
I'm waiting for the technology to advance a little further to guarantee a solid high quality connection wirelessly, as this is more than doable with current phone hardware. I know some units support wifi streaming, but you can't take calls via wifi.
Other than a few minor issues here and there I love the headunit. It has multiple very powerful pre-amps, HD radio built in, usb/ipod in, 3.5mm aux, connection for external microphone for BT calls, pandora, satellite radio ready, and it does display song names with the stock music app and pandora, but not through spotify(sigh). It's just a single din head unit though, would be great for a soundsystem.
It also has a decent amp if you are going to use stock speakers in your car, gives you a little extra bump, and a 12? band equalizer.
I bought it for $300 about a year ago.

My car bluetooth doesn't support a2dp so I got this..

Very good.. Even has mic so if ur car doesn't have bluetooth at all, this will be very useful

Looking for a double din that works with s4 screen mirroring....anybody have an answer?
Sent from my Xbox One

This is what you need:
Jvc NSX1 (on sale from crutchfield.com)
Full mirroring drivelink app by auron89
There are many headunits that may work but I chose this one specifically because it is what the developer of the app uses. The headunit display is ok but there is great independent switching or tandem use of various audio and video feeds. With the right apps you will beat anything else out there. One note: drivelink is a little laggy so no streaming video. If you want that then use appradio with mhl adapter for hdmi output but then you lose touchscreen headunit capability.
Please thank me for the reference because this will be the best thing you will ever do with an s4 minus the "home videos" !!!!!!!

False, using ARLiberator you get full control of your phone using touchscreen

I stand corrected (at least with appradio2) but I have not seen a fully working mod for appradio3

Hi just read your post, so do you actually have the gs4 and the jvc nsx1 working together with drivelink? If you do maybe you could give me some tips cause eveytime i plug mine in it says "This content can not be displayed while driving. Please disconnect then re-connect you smartphone cable". Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

The first thing you want to do is install the modified drivelink app by auron89 and uninstall any other drivelink previously installed. The error message seems to be related to the cable shifter wire to make sure the screen doesnt display while not in park. Just ground that wire permanently to the frame. Now you must connect the phone by following these steps in order
1) turn on phone and pass through lock screen if being used.
2) load modified drivelink app
3)plug in phone to usb coming from headunit external box
4) wait for screen to mirror phone
5) hit physical home button on phone. (Headunit will mirror home screen if you are using launcher like nova launcher OR you must select app on phone first then it will mirror)

I have AppRadio 2 with ARLiberator. It can be fussy with some ROMs and doesn't like TW launcher, but it is ABSOLUTELY worth the hassle. I have Google Music All Access, Pandora, YouTube, etc. all at my fingertips. I drive about 25k miles a year with my current job, and this makes it more tolerable. Also, I've used Garmins, TomToms, and an older Pioneer navi, but having Google Maps projected onto the screen, through the car speakers, and using a external antenna is the ultimate. I can't recommend it enough. :good:

BlueTooth In-Car Audio with the A500?

I was getting ready to burn a new Rob Zombie CD but I thought of this and wanted to ask the guru's if it might work!
I did a little research and found a few devices that I "think" might work, but I'm not 100% sure of the bluetooth capability of the A500 (does it have the correct profile to do this?):
TuneLink Auto - http://www.amazon.com/Tunelink-Blue...2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1305375956&sr=8-2
GOgroove Flexsmart - http://www.amazon.com/Transmitter-H...berry-Smartphones/dp/B003PPGOC0/ref=pd_cp_e_1
Has anyone ever used a type of device like this? Any recommendations on the best one to get?
Thanks in advance for any help!
-edit-
I went ahead and ordered a couple:
The Soundfly BT: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DDE4VY/ref=ox_ya_os_product (will have it Monday),
and The TuneLink (will have it Tuesday).
I'll post my findings once I give them a test!
Bluetooth FM transmitters? My experience with FM transmitters taught me one thing.... with buy a new head unit with aux in or bluetooth directly. But I have yet to try my a500 via bluetooth in the car, maybe later today

The iconia has the capability, that is sure. I paired it with the bluetooth of a rented car and the music of my iconia played perfectly. I could change songs and volume with the steering wheel controls as if I was reading a cd.
The car was a Peugeot 308, using poweramp in the iconia. 4 hours if pleasure drive in France listening to my music, and with very low battery drain.

Great, thanks! I look forward to testing it out next week to see how it works. I bought two different models and will give one of them to the wife (after I decide which one I like). LOL
I have two of them, and much cheaper than what you paid.
First one i bought was an Alpine EX-10. I got it on amazon for 30 bucks. It allows bluetooth transmission through line-in aux or fm transmitter. there's ALOT of wires though, but it comes with a remote as well and a mic for speakerphone.
The 2nd one I bought, which I am using currently, is the Kensington LiquidAUX. I think I paid like 20 bucks for this and it works great. Very little hardware and cables and works perfect. Has a remote and steering wheel mount. It only works through AUX-Line-In though.

Is it possible Android / Flip up car stereo?

We have seen phones that have laptop docks for a bigger usable interface. We have seen phones hook into a huge touch screen monitor and work well. Would it be a feasible idea to have a phone plug into a flip up car stereo and mirror the touch screen. I use my phone all the time in the car whether its for music, navigation, information or anything else. It would be great to be able to plug my phone into my stereo and have a bigger touch screen right there on the radio. Just a thought and wondering if its possible.
probably possible. i think it is more feasable to have a hole cut into the dash to house a 4.3'' fone with a usb/headfone jack.

Or just a dock or stand. But this seems like a better idea. It would be a lot easier with the newer cars with usb/3.5mm jacks preinstalled.
It would be cool to see this thread flourish, Car mods! I'm trying to create a dock in my car for my phone, so that I cun use it to control my radio garage navigation or any other instance of automotive life, like even check the status of the engin.

I fancy getting a cheap 5-7" tablet for this job - My 10.1 Gtab would look plain silly mounted as a sat nav and wouldn't last 5 minutes if left unattended.
Try using Vlingo or Google Car Home for starters. Vlingo will read your texts aloud and allow you to reply with using your hands. You can also start navigation or send messages completely hands free by saying "Hey Vlingo!" prompting it to auto listen for the next command.
Next up if the free version of Torque(or paid for if you need).
This connects to your car via a cheap bluetooth ODB2 device (~£15 on the bay)
This will give you access to readings such as mpg, speed and any engine error codes.
There are also plugins such as a video/data recorder.
I can't post links to the android market pages of these apps as I've not made 8 posts yet but they're easy to find!

My ultimate setup that I would like to see would be a radio that has a touch screen flip out that I can plug my phone into and have it mirror my phone. That way I wouldnt have to have a seperate tablet and phone that have a different setup. Essentially this would turn the radio into a mini tablet with your phone being the host for the screen. Thanks everyone for the replies!!
I would dearly love this!
I wuould like it werry much too
It has been my dream for a long time too… They have made it for iphone, maybe we will have it for android too some day.
Please make a google search with the string below (I am a noob. I am not allowed to post links yet):

Wonder if it will work with gooapple. And does it just use ur current Pandora app or does it have a Pandora app of it. I just want to use my Pandora app. http://telematicsnews.info/2011/05/...n-in-car-display-comes-to-aftermarket_my2211/

There is a kickstarter campaign product that allows you to combine your phone with the car stereo into a single double-DIN device. Currently, they have working faceplates for the iPhone 4 and 4S but they are developing Android ones as well.
Check it out: [I can't post external links but a simple search of "kickstarter dash" will take you right to it.]
You know, this would be quite simple with an MHL adapter and a method to send touch input to the screen, which im sure is out there.
TFT LCD Developers Kit
There is a developers kit for a 7" TFT LCD, now I realize this is a full microprocessor board. It does run android, perhaps it has something in its code that is usable, or point to what hardware is required to interface with a smartphone.
Not enough posts yet, so just Google this:
LS6410 SAMSUNG ARM11 S3C6410 board kit 7" TFT LCD (Android)
love this thread . im going to get a nexus one or zte blade and mount it up to the space above my stereo . going to put a bigger antenna on it to help boost gps speed. hook it up to power . and have a full size sd card instead of micro sd . wire it to aux audio. it will music and navigation system.
I just bought a 7.0 galaxy plus 3g with this in mind. I got rid of my phone when I bought this tablet too. I spoke on my phone 15 minutes last month and all that was in the car. I can do that with voip...
I intend to do this install on a 2011 wrx. I just bought the JDM radio bezel that is 6.8x3.9 inch cut out (stock usdm is 8" wide). With a bit of dremeling I should be able to slide my tablet directly into the top of the bezel. I plan to put a backing plate so it looks finished with the tab removed. I want removal to be painless. As I plan to use this tablet a lot.
I'll be completely nixing the head unit in my car. To provide power to the speakers I will buy a clarion equalizer and a smallish 300w 4 channel amp probably the nice alpine on amazon for 120 bucks.
Here's where the fun begins! Audio out should be no big deal. I found cables that split the 3.5mm trrs audio into audio out and mic input. So I'll just run rca outs to my clarion eq and run my mic into the device. Done!
My wrx has steering wheel controls. These tie into a stock unit typically. That's no fun. I plan to buy a sparkfun ioio with bluetooth and intercept the SWC signals. Then using the google ADK I can read the pin signals and respond to things like skip track, volume, mode (use mode to switch open apps), pick up, hang up and voice command. I also want to use the ioio to interface with the headlight dimmer and illumination as well.
I just got my tab a few days ago. My bezel should be coming in the mail early next week. Once the bezel is done, I'll rip out the head unit and do the amp and equalizer install. At that time I'll capture the steering wheel control voltages and start hacking on the ioio.
I'll start a project thread for all this once I do the amp install.

[Q] Nexus 4 Mirrorlink and Miracast

Does anybody know if the nexus 4 supports mirrorlink?
I've managed to get an N4 for Christmas and I'm now looking to get a good stereo for the car to pair it with. The only info I can find about the N4 is it has miracast which seems to be different to mirrorlink but I'm not sure how.
I'm not particularly a car stereo buff but it seems like a number of companies (Sony, Alpine, JVC, etc) have released headunits with mirrorlink. It looks like quite a cool technology and would really be useful for Google navigation on the stereo screen. However if it isn't going to work, I'll give up and start looking for a cheaper bluetooth only solution.
Thanks
I went to best buy to test this out on a Sony head unit with mirrorlink and it didn't work. I used Samsung drive link app.
Another option is to get a miracast adapter with a hdmi to rca converter to connect to the head unit. But you will only be able to control apps from your phone. But at least your phone will be mirrored on the head unit.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Thanks for trying that out, I'll keep my fingers crossed for mirror link in the future.
I really like your 'hdmi to rca adapter' idea. I will give that one some serious consideration, however if it works on this stereo my guess is it will work on others as well (back to looking at other stereos again, I thought I had narrowed it down).
Has anyone tried this? I'm also in the market for a good Headunit and If its not going to work on MirrorLink I wonder if it works using the hdmi/rca adapter.

Duplicate Android Display To More Than One Screen?

I just installed an android display unit (Pumpkin KD-C0235) running 4.4 in my dads van. The unit has video output(VGA) but will only output a video stream when playing a DVD, through Pumpkins DVD app. It was verified with the mfg that, that was the only video out functionality.
Since my dad is paralyzed he sits in the middle of the van and I have installed a TV for him to see whats on the head unit. We got the head unit thinking that we would be able to have full control of it on a larger screen using a wireless keyboard and mouse.
Is there an app to duplicate the android screen during normal operation to the video outputs that are onto the back of the unit (RCA)? Or are there any other alternatives to get this constant duplicate video stream up to the tv without having to use WIFI. Since it works with their DVD app, this sounds like a software solution. An app that can be loaded and a video output can be chosen to duplicate the display. Does this exist? I am still looking, if it doesn't. What are the other solutions, other than learning how to write my own APK file.
All the help is appreciated! Thank you
Only via rdp or vnc over wifi.
tapa_talk 4 sucks
You can combine a miracast dongle and use a RCA to HDMI converter like this.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IYFUL3E?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage
I'm using this solution in my car but I do warn you the video quality is somewhere between tolerable and not good at all.
Any software solutions for this yet?
I too am a bit annoyed about the design flaw in which Videos outputs can only be used by DVD or Aux-In apps.
If anyone is able to provide a solution via apk, custom ROM, or firmware, I'd be happy to donate to them!

Screen mirroring and phone control?

Hey guys, I usually just lurkj the forums but I figured it is time to ask the pros. First off, this is the unit I am installing today: Seems i cannot post the link but here is the title. from amazon Pumpkin Quad Core 7 inch 2 DIN Universal Android 4.4 Car Stereo Radio HD 1024*600 Muti-touch Screen GPS Navigation Without DVD Player Support WIFI/3G/Bluetooth/OBD2/DVR/Mirror Link
I am running a t-mobile service on my phone and I get free data for certain streaming apps. Its pretty cool. Anyway, I just learned that using the phone as a hotspot and then using one of these streaming apps on the device, in this case the new stereo, it does use my data plan... bummer. Anyway I am wondering if there is a wireless mirroring solution that would work and have control over the phone using the touch screen on the receiver? If there is not, how about a wired solution? I have looked into things like android auto. Does that actually work descent and on our receivers? Thanks everyone and a little nudge in the right direction would be awesome :good:
The pumpkin deck has a really basic bluetooth audio interface. I guess that would be the main thing I would like to change. I use Pandora alot and the interface on the deck is really basic. It gives me the option to skip track and play/pause. If I could at least get a similar interface to my old pioneer deck (id3 tags, thumb up/down) that would be cool. Or even a front end app, now that would rock.... Thanks again.
