Nexus 4 battery destroyed itself! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife has a n4 and the battery doubled/ballooned to over 50% of its original size breaking the back glass amd causing what seemed like all kind of software issues. It was hard to tell at first bc it was under a case but when removed the bak was all cracked. The camera when used would crash the phone and show it battery stats a wierd cliff event. Replaced the battery and all is well

That's what I call a really defective battery...

Cann you post the first 5 or 8 characters of the serial number from the box? This might be an isolated issue for a single battery or a line of devices with the same supplier for the battery.

Haha this reminds me of my old HTC hero.
As that was a removable battery it was encased in a plastic housing.
I just remember coming to it one day and finding the back cover half off.
When I removed it the battery looked like an egg!
Funny enough I just squeezed it back to it's sort of original shape and it still works fine to this day (backup phone)

It happened to me also.
My N4 was turning off randomly and draining battery suddenly from 90% to 50% on so on. I sent my phone to LG service center and they said they have no solution for this problem. The second day my battery doubled size and the back of the phone was no more flat (luckily it didnt break). So i went and changed the battery now my N4 is working fine again with no problem, but sometimes it get overheated with no reason

My battery isn't bloated, but after a red light of death, I'm getting about 1hr 30 mins on 3g (used to reach minimum of 3hrs) and 2hrs or less in wifi (used to get 5hrs+) which sucks :/, gonna get a replacement tomorrow.

Same thing here, my battery life is horrible and it shuts down at 2 hrs sot no matter what, I also noticed that the back isn't flat anymore. Probably gonna have to get it replaced. By the way how much did you pay for the battery? And would it be covered with the warranty?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app

you should RMA as its abnormal and unacceptable to occur, if you have your battery connected while the phone isnt in use for a long time it can expand, ive seen it in my old phones left in the drawer.

U should RMA your phone, i bought mine from google store US, but i am abroad now.
I mailed them about my problem and they said they would RMA my device if i was in the US now.
So i want to an LG service center it costed me 33$

I am thinking about RMA but I will be leaving the country for business this Saturday for three weeks. So I guess I will wait a while, hopefully its not dangerous and the back doesn't crack

Battery lies.

OK so I have had this phone two days now and noticed an oddity. I had about 43% battle according to the phone. I rebooted and then jumped down to 20% or so. Anyone else see this.

I think all Android users faced some issues with battery status..
Ex. When the phone charged 80% if restart it the battery might decrease by 5% each time... while when it's less than 10% each time the battery decrease from 1-2% max ! ... that's really not reasonable
In addition, when i charge my phone 8 hour the battery would stay 17 hour.. while if i change it until it's got 100% charged "according to battery status" it wouldn't stay on more than 10 hours!!! Wipping battery and other solutions also didn't help by the way !!!!

I will try that
I had a similar problem and never solved it. My battery typically lasts 32 hours new. After a few weeks it went to 16. Frustrated I let it "die" to find that it actually continued to run for 16 additional hours literally at 0%.
Unplugging the battery fixed it for that current charge cycle but upon recharging it went back to its old ways.
I eventually went through the trouble to purchase an OEM replacement and further open up my Razr M to replace. Things were great for another couple of weeks until the same exact problem happened again.
Frustrated I go back and forth between my Inc 4g and my Razr M depending on if I need a reliable battery read (traveling, etc). I like the Razr M so much I might just buy another and hope it doesn't crap out like this one, but then again there is probably a new season of Droid devices coming in a few months.

have you tried one of those battery calibration apps? they require root though.
as for me, my battery yesterday showed 34% while in the system. but then when I booted in TWRP recovery, it said my battery was at 22%.

[Q] Charger got wet

Hello, My original LG wall adapter got wet, i wiped away all the water i could, and let it dry out for day.
After that I plugged my N4 into it, and my battery just jumped from 70% to 100% in a blink. I unplugged it imminently, and phone thought it was still charging for like 10 seconds, and then my battery percentage went back to 70%.
It's been a few days since this event. I'm worrying about whatever damage it might have caused.
Battery life isn't great. i get about 1.5 SOT when I hit 40%. standby time are as the used to be, but when using the phone the battery seems to drain more. (WIFI OFF WHEN NOT AT HOME ,ALL GOOGLE LOCATION SERVICES DISABLED, ON 3G 24/7)
Is there any real test to see if there is really any damage ?
I hope I'm just imagining. Maybe the charger didn't went bad at all? after all is it a known bug when nexus jumps to 100%.
The wet adapter charged my Other galaxy S2 just fine..
Here is some ridiculous screen.barely 10 minutes screen on an a short phone call and its already down 5%

5% down, in 1 hr and 15 minutes, with 10~ minutes of screen on time, and some phone calls is not really that bad imho.
You should probably get a new charger, seems like something is messed up within the charger, due to being exposed to water.
Is there any way to determine if the phone itself received damage ? I's there any chance at all ?
Only the plastic of the charger was exposed to water ..
anyway I'm using apple Iphone adapter since then.
I think the best way to tell if it received any damage is to just use it normally.
Charge it normally, through the iphone adapter for now, and see if the problem re-occurs.
I do notice battery drains quicker , My friend's nexus, which was from an older batch, drained 2% after 10 mins in google chrome, auto brightness.
mine drains 8% , same brightness, no application running in background. betterbatterystats shows nothing unusual.
Is this normal? Totally Moderate use.

WiFi eating battery on Note 3

Hey everyone,
My mom just got a new Note 3 (yay!), and I have been quite busy exploring all its features. One thing that is nagging me, however is that both the stock browser and chrome are using up a great deal of battery. Wifi is eating 1% Every 1-2 minutes and while using the browsers this is amplified to a percent every 30 secs!
Please help me.

Wifi has always been a battery vampire.
Do you have brightness set to 100%?
How far are you from the router? A bad signal uses more power.
Is anything syncing in the background?

I just don't understand why they don't use stronger batteries in the first place. I wouldn't mind carry along an additional let's say 50g in exchange for a longer battery life ...

At stand by, the Note 3 hardly uses 1-2% battery every 8 hours or so, but when it comes to calling (core function of the phone!) and wifi+browsers the battery suffers greatly. I haven't tested cellular data yet because of weak signals near my house. Should I let it drop to 0% and charge to 100% or get a new battery? Really disappointed with the battery.
As a general rule you should avoid full discharge/recharge cycles (except for things such as recalibration) as this in the long run shortens the batt's lifetime even more. So it's best to recharge it more often and keep it somewhere between 10-90%.

UPDATE
New update guys:
I left my phone with WiFi on for half an hour and it ate 3% battery from 50% to 47% which includes a phone call. And this time the phone was a bit further away from the router. So, I guess it's not the WiFi that's sucking the juice but the browsers.
Any fix for this?

Fixed
Hey,
Well the issue fixed itself. I now have WiFi running with Smart Screen, Air Gestures, Sync, Screen Rotating and using the web browser to do some surfing and battery hasn't dropped a percent since the last few minutes. It got fixed right after another (it's 3rd) charge and it's working now.
Guess I just needed to charge it a few times for it to work. If anyone else is having issues and have charged it only once or twice, try charging it again. Mine was at 47% when I charged.
Requesting a mod to lock this.

The drain is horrible

Unplugged around 9am 40 min later lost 10%++ battery. Wow its like that everyday.

When there is one to flash I will. I think something hidden can be draining battery I am just not sure what it is
because when I leave my phone overnight it will drain like 1-2% battery but when I start using it streaming music that's when it goes down quick.

when I first got it got hot a lot for a couple of days and battery life was horrible. noticed a lot of my drain was the network eventhough I had full bars. sometimes I would download something and it would disappear, or a app like usps wouldn't save info. called and they offered me a replacement due to defective unit. now battery seems a little bit better but still not great, my old note 2 has about the same battery life as this phone maybe alittle better but I had that phone since it came out. lets see if the replacement is better but if its not im going get a refund.
I'll just put this here.
I'm averaging 2hr 45mins to 3 hours SOT. Is that the norm?
If you can live without active display/moto display. Battery life is much better.

22 hours off battery, 5 hours 1 minute SoT today...only Attentive Display off, everything else on, no greenify, rooted, exposed.
honestly guys, I highly doubt these are defective units. every phone forum has people screaming that yours is defective if this happens. it's simple that some people get much better battery life than others. I never in my life got battery life on any of my phones that others got, and i highly doubt I had a string of like 10 defective different android phones. my note 4 battery life was god awful, and that thing has a huge battery.
either way, i use lte all the time, I have auto upload for dropbox, i have everything syncing all the time. so of course I have bad battery life. this phone seems like it'll be just as bad as my note to be honest... but I'm not going to return it because it's not like I have a defective battery like so many people claim they think they do.
Sent from my Moto X Pure
In addition to turning off the Moto Active Display. Turning off Adaptive brightness also greatly conserves battery life. Together, without those two Moto features, the device burns battery like most any device. So it's a matter of whether you want the Moto goodies or not. Turning off the Moto Actions and Moto Voice probably help to some degree also. Goodies have a cost .

5 hours of SOT? I can barely touch 3. I wonder why my phone doesn't hit 4 hours.
Hmm here is what I did today I turned off VolTE and did wipe & dalvik cache wipes. So far I think drain is smaller I will wait until battery dies and re-charge it to full again.
Today I lost 40% just by listening to music in about 1 hour and a half LOL.
I have moto notifications off facebook greenified etc.. everything I could try. What I did just now was turn off adaptive brightness.
Right before any draining starts only 12 hours after unplugged 20min later ? Is this ok or not ?

I'm using my note 4 for almost 1.5 years with an external battery charger and second battery. Both original batteries were giving problem on usage like phone shuts down when battery around %25-35 and if i pull out battery and insert again, battery level shows %1-2 then closes again. My screen on time was around 1.5-2 hours.
I bought yesterday a new Deji brand battery, in first %100 to %1 run i got 5 hours 7 minutes screen on time. Even i bought this device i couldn't get this times. I'm gonna buy another deji brand battery for sure. Samsung's original note 4 batteries really sucks this time.
