Some things I've learned - Ouya General

So I thought id share some of the things i have learned about my Ouya that makes life a little easier:
1: Double Tap Ouya button = Home
2: To get an Xbox360 dongle to work with multiple controllers follow these steps:
2A - Power on Ouya WITHOUT xbox dongle attached
2B - Boot into Ouya and have the light lit on your Ouya Controller
2C - Plug Xbox360 controller dongle in and pair your xbox controllers.
2D - Activate within app (N64 emu it is in settings/input and then hit the on switch for each. Then go ahead and set it to the xbox360 controller profile and when you play the game hit multiplayer setup and follow the instructions. Each emulator is different.
3: To turn off your Ouya completely hold the power button on the Ouya until the standard Android popup appears and then use the controller to hit Yes
4: Root Explorer (Paid) can mount Dropbox as a partition within the app saving you the step of having to use the official Dropbox app which sucks.. BUT you can only open Root Explorer through Nova or another launcher. Fails through Ouya Launcher. You can also mount a SMB partition as well. Just makes sharing that much easier.
5: Never leave your Xbox dongle plugged in on boot. It screws with things. For instance I cannot start certain games because it is seeing my Ouya controller incorrectly and wont accept button inputs
Hope these tips help some people

6) Pressing 'Y' and then "powering off OUYA" doesnt really power it off. A large portion of the android framework is still running, including pretty much every service in init. Dalvik, zygote, adb, internet, etc are all still there, and still doing whatever they want to do. Apparently the only part of it that does power down is the video output.
7) Certain triggers make the ouya "power back on" (even though it never really powered off). One of these is getting a signal over HDMI cable. some TVs send this when you select an input, some of them send it when they power on.
8) OUYA has the option enabled to kill apps when they're no longer in focus. This is good since there's no "recent apps" button where you could normally kill running apps that you no longer wanted to be running. This is bad in that it makes some apps act wonky. For example, if you find a video in TVPortal and select it to watch, you will see the video in your video app like mxplayer. When you are done watching it and go back to TV portal, it will start all over from the beginning of the app.

Netflix requires you have that unchecked? I haven't run into any problems with it and I keep it checked.
The main reason it's checked is because if you let Android do it's thing like a phone, it'll take up too much RAM and slow down the bigger games, such as shadowrun. Leaving this checked is the best way to run it as a video game console.
The powering off by the Y button puts it to sleep much in the same way your phone goes to sleep when you hit the power button to turn off the screen. It puts it in a low power state mode and Wifi does go to sleep, but it does still stay connected at a very low level. For all purposes (since this is an android device) this should not affect the longevity of the product.
One thing to add is the difference between holding down the button on the OUYA until the shut down dialog pops up vs holding it down until the system goes off is that using the dialog makes sure everything is saved while holding it down is, essentially, like a battery pull. It shouldn't hurt the phone, but there's a small chance some data could be lost.

Do NOT buy this thing!!!

Wow, talk about a terrible experience. The MOJO is absolutely NOT ready for production. I was able to find maybe 10 games that were even compatible with it, and only ONE game that actually used the controller as advertised. NOVA 3 almost worked but even then there were some functions that didn't work (like swapping weapons, sorta important). The list of compatible games is misleading; many of those games will load, but they will not function with the controller (meaning: not at all).
Madcatz claims that the TegraZone games will work with the MOJO - that is a lie. Only a handful of them actually work. A gaming console that only works with a handful of games is pretty useless.
I updated the firmware exactly as instructed, and after rebooting the wifi did not work at all (it did before the update). An Android console without functional wifi is a paperweight.
I am going to return this unit and try to get a Nvidia Shield instead. I got the MOJO for my kid for Christmass. Talk about a disappointment. Luckily he also got a PS4, so it wasn't a total disaster.
The MOJO is an interesting concept, and if they ever get it working right it might - *might* - be worth the money. But as of now, no, not even close. Stay FAR away from this thing for now. You've been warned.
I'm starting to agree....Out of the 372 apps I've purchased, only five were compatible and able to download. I've sideloaded a couple, but cannot map the controller properly.
I'll give it a few more days and some tinkering.
I wished to read this before I buy it back to ouya without developer MOJO = 0 with all respect

Interested in selling it?
Not just yet..I've been sideloading apps all day. Watching some streaming movies on it right now. It's a very capable machine, but fairly annoying having to sideload anything useful.
Well so far little disappointed but I like it just waiting until root which hopefully we can mod the build prop to show apps in store. Don't side load much using a aptoide. . From what I understand the tegra 4 still pretty new so I'm guessing that's why some of these games not playing. Patience it will get better
Yeah...Updated the firmware and now the Wifi is dead. Unable to "Turn On." WTF....
Yea the way I've mostly gotten over the No apps work issue is by sideloading. Its annoying though because if there's feature updates you have to backup from my other devices, transfer and install again to get the updates. The power is nice though. Nova 3 and Dead trigger look good even though their not a very good games its still a good showing of what the Mojo can do. And if you're into emulators most of them out there work great with the controller and have no trouble doing kool stuff. Unfortunately at the moment the mojo is mostly making me excited for a Minix device with equivalent specs as Minix devices don't have the same app store issue.
What are you using for your backups? I tried AppMonster, but haven't had a chance to sideload the backups to the MOJO yet.
Titanium Backup on a rooted device. It just backs apks to a zip file. If there's extra data I just move the obb files over manually via an sd card.

Yea that really sux. That's the kind of stuff that you never want to see happen.
To be honest this feels more like a developer/beta release. The hardware is there and is for the most part great, could use an off/off button and an otg port. But the way it interacts with the ecosystem that currently exists is much too, I hate to say it, fragmented. There are more apps coming to the play store and I've seen a few pop in the last couple of days but its still hasn't hit anywhere near that critical mass point where its useable for anyone without some android nerdery. Which begs the question why didn't Mad Catz support that nerdery with things like an otg port, pre root/root tools at launch etc. Though the pre-bootloader unlock is a good start.
Its also clear google really has no interest in this kind of product YET by the way that the play store is currently laid out and hides paid apps from the main frontend, you have to search for paid apps specifically or by type. Its really going to be a rough year of slow apps incoming and building up momentum about this time next year I think it might start to be a valid for some main stream gamers. I'm worried that Mad Catz might feel that's too long to support and update this new market product. Luckily the markets going to grow either way but I'd like to see this product along for the ride.
All that being said I use this product every day, really like it, and whenever I'm home its on and being used in some way. Be that gaming, local movies, streaming video, or music but I took a path to set it up that very very few will and most I fear will have the same experience with '**** don't work then I updated It and less **** works. Return'. And that really sux.
So, I purchased from Amazon on 26th Dec. (Note, I'm REALLY trying to like this device because I really like the hardware). As an update to the OP info, mine came with firmware 0110 and NOVA 3's weapon change works fine, but the buttons are mapped really stupid - the trigger is not the fire button, the shoulder button is. Trigger changes weapons.
NFS MW installed from backed-up APK, and it detects controller and says you can set it up in the config menu, but you cannot get to the config menu with either controller, keyboard, or mouse, so it is unplayable.
I got a Real Racing 3 APK from a bad place and it does not seem to support controllers at all, and also does not seem to recognize the Tegra, so it is terrible looking and unplayable.
Shadowgun works great and you can assign all functions to buttons on the controller. This was also a backed-up APK. You cannot install the THD version; even if you could get the APK on there it won't let you dl the THD data.
Overall, my experience has been terrible. Yay! I'm so excited!

I find the controller works better if I switch it do mouse mode or PC mode, depending on the game.
It's the game developers who must designate that a controller can be used for their game. If they don't, then no dice. Can't blame them tho, how could they have seen devices like these coming. I'm willing to bet almost EVERY new game becomes controller compatible. Hang in.. Still brand new device. Developers will adapt. And besides, unlike a ps2, it won't become outdated as fast. Games will just continue to improve!

Aww, we can blame the developers a little bit. I mean, come on, ANDROID developers? They often hang out on this very site where people have been hacking their butts off for years adding controller support to games. It might be a big deal to add controller support to a finished game if it wasn't developed with that in mind but I'm with you, it will be expected in the future.
In the mean time I would really like it if we could install one of those apps that lets you map buttons to touchscreen presses. That would help a lot!

Yes, but developers have been working on gamepad support. The MOGA supposedly has 230 games which work with their controllers, which happens to be a great feat because often developers are not likely to upgrade their older stuff (gameloft is notorious for this where their old games are "not compatible" with newer devices, even if the resolution is the same and the hardware more powerful.

I think I got distracted writing the post you replied to. When I was talking about "controller support" I really meant to say something like button mapping. You know? Essentially, you let android handle the input device, and just have a method to map input signals to your calls. Like, how the emulators let you map each button press of a controller to an action in the emulator. By abstracting away the interface to the actual controller, ANY android supported device could be mapped. You would never have to worry about someone building a new controller that you have to write non-reusable code for. This MOGA nonsense just seems dirty, but then again, I'm not an Android dev, so there may be something more to it than I realize. I just can't put together in my head how I'd even write something that didn't abstract the input -- what if I wanted to change it later? I don't know....I hate the idea of "Support the MOGA!" "Support the CNTRLR!" No -- support everything! It SHOULD be easier!

You mentioned the mapping but as an app. And I wasn't talking about MOGA versus CNTRL either. I was thinking more along the lines like with Windows PCs they have generic controller recognition (sure, you can install apps and drivers for better compatibility) where you normally get at least basic functionality. But yeah, one could avoid those problems if they had the same functionality of emulators where they map functionality based on the readings when buttons are pressed. It would make things quite a bit easier in general for them (a little but more work for us but only when playing a game for the first time).
The next app I'm gonna rip from my tablet is the Sixaxis app that allows you to map the buttons for the PS3 controller. I use it on my tablet for any possible game. You can assign buttons swipe actions, too. Very handy. There are a few other apps out there that do this with generic BT controllers, so we might just have to start trying them out. MadCatz surely should have created one for the MOJO before it was ever released. This was a big stupid on their part.
Hello All,
This is Nathan from Mad Catz. Our apologies for the inconveniences you've been facing. I unfortunately could not replicate your wifi problem. One note is that most MOJOs that have been made available should have already been on "MO0110-WW", so this step could be skipped if you don't need it.
Before any update, you can also go into your google account settings, choose your account, and then choose "Sync now" from the menu in the top right. If wifi is not working, you can use a wired ethernet connection to at least do this step. If you're forced to do the "factory reset" option to fix the wifi, when you do the initial setup again, choose to "restore" from your google account. Outside of apps that have been sideloaded, this should start downloads of everything that was downloaded from the google play store shortly after the initial setup is finished. You can check which ones are being re-downloaded by going into the Play Store and then checking your "My apps".

Turn off the Nexus Player?

Hi,
How do you turn off the Nexus player? I can't find an option for it, I had to just switch off the power instead.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

There is no "off" on the Nexus Player, just like the Chromecast. It goes into a low powered standby mode after a few minutes, waiting for any Google Cast connections to wake it up and start playing (with HDMI-CEC enabled on TV or receiver, it'll automatically turn on, switch inputs, etc to start playing your cast immediately).

Like @Elrondolio already mentioned, there is no "Power Off" feature (which I HATE!!!). However, you could look for some kind of switch that you could attach to the power adapter cord so that you don't have to unplug every time that you want to turn the device off...something like this: http://www.adafruit.com/products/1125 (though, I have no idea whether or not that specific cord actually will work...I'm just presenting the concept). I've done this with my raspberry pi and it's awesome!
Another option would be to plug the player into an outlet that is controlled by a light switch (which would be much nicer than the cord IMO).

I'm truly not trying to be confrontational here, simply curious: why do you hate that it's always on (in low power mode) so much?
To me, I see it no different than another phone or tablet in my home as it has nearly the exact same innards... all of my family's phones and tablets are on 24/7 as well, either on battery or charging on the mains. Having to boot up the box for a quick cast to show a quick video/trailer/etc to the family or start playing some music would be an inconvenience, I'd think, as having to wait for a receiver to boot its OS every time would be.
Again, simply curious as to your reasoning is all. Thanks!
Thanks everyone for your explanation.
I also have a Chromecast installed on my TV and I don't have any problem with it being always on WHEN my TV is turned on. However for the nexus player it will be truly always on unless you switch off the main.
I just got my nexus player yesterday so I dunno if it will be warm/hot if it's always on even when not in use. Anyway if it's not warm/hot if not in use then I've got no problem with it.
Thanks again everyone!

agreed, a reboot option would be nice. a 3rd party app can achieve this with root. such as: power menu

No worries about being confrontational, everybody has there own likes/dislikes...nothing wrong with that. Part of it is the made desire for efficiency that I have...why have something consuming power and bandwidth when it's not being used? Also, the amount of time that I and my family are using it is far less than the time that we aren't using it, if I was using it all day, I might not mind so much. Also, it's nice to do a reboot without unplugging the device, especially since I want to put it in a cabinet that is somewhat of a tight space. But, probably one of the biggest things that comes to my mind is connection to the internet on a 24/7 basis really bugs me. I know that my phone and my wife's phone is always connected...but it needs to be to notify me of things, my TV isn't notifying me of anything, I just want to use it when I want some good old couch potato entertainment, so why take up my bandwidth (I assume that it does some kind of check) and use any amount of power (which I do pay for, no matter how little the power usage is) when it isn't needed?
Personally, I believe that the following principle (highly advocated by Google) should have been followed: "Decide for me but let me have the final say" (http://developer.android.com/design/get-started/principles.html#decide-for-me). In other words, give the option to leave it on all the time for those that want it...but allow for powering off for those who don't. That way, everybody is happy.
I know this isn't an on-device fix, but if you're seriously concerned about your TV accessories only being on when the TV is on, there are many power strips out there that have a "master" outlet that toggles power to the rest of the outlets based on when the master device is on. So turning your TV on and off will switch power to the rest of your devices.
A reboot option would be nice. As for turning the NP off, I am using a TRIPP LITE TLP76MSG Eco Green Switched 7 Outlet Conserve Energy Surge Protector from Amazon.
Just an update, I found that when not in use the player is cool to the touch. As such I believe it goes into a low power/power saving mode. I have no issues with it being always on now. Way to go, google/asus. :good:
Confirmation of sleep mode
My nexus player's light is always on. Does anyone know if this means the unit is on or in sleep mode after the 30 minutes of inactivity? I have set it to 30 minutes and daydream does come on. Based on the manual, when the light is on the unit is on.
Thanks
https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/6123074?hl=en&ref_topic=6121506
I think the light just means it has power, so it can be in sleep mode even when the light is on.
This was my main concern yesterday.
(I had since a week ago the Nexus Player but due my Internet provider's laziness, it was not until last night I could FINALLY setup my account and the device).
I noticed the DayDream options but I agree that the same OS needs an reboot option.

Understand that you can't power off the Nexus Player, but will it damage the internal components of the player (flash drive, etc) in the long run if you just simply cut off the power supply, which is apparently the only way to off the device?

Laggy remote since updated remote firmware which comes with 3.0, sometimes double presses sometimes random volume increasing/decreasing up and down (specially night time when everybody sleeping at house ).
anyone have something similar???
anyone knows how to fix(reset/reinstall)? (maybe some software where can re-flash remote firmware through direct connected USB cable an PC...etc)
p.s. i start remembering when i updated vulkan developer preview on the firs boot-up i walk through remote and controller firmware update - and it was toked me a "Suspicious" good time around 5-10min, ...maybe there was some corrupted installation process in result now is some glitch .....

Ok, I thought I'm only who have this kind of laggy remote, looks like this is bug which comes with firmware v3.0. Hopefully nvidia will take care about this in nearest future. P.s. And also I believe there is some option about re-flash firmware of remote - well...probably (yet) not for the home users - coz when u connecting remote to Windows through micro usb windows starts installing remote drivers (interesting for what then?!) ...who knows maybe need some simular application like odin for Samsung or flastool for Sony Xperia etc, some bin or img file, maybe also kind of button combinations and job would be done.

Daydream View Controller Bugged?

I'm not entirely sure what caused it, and I've tried everything I can think of to reset it but nothing seems to work. My Daydream View remote/controller doesn't seem to do anything but recenter when holding any button, and does nothing when pressing any button.
When any VR app starts Daydream kicks in and hijacks it, even if it's not a Daydream app (including players), even if Daydream is disabled and all its data wiped (VR services is still there), it asks you to hold to home button while pointing forward to recenter begin. Except that doesn't work anymore so no VR app works.
At this point so it doesn't hijack non-Daydream apps I'm going to try uninstalling VR services so it ****s off. But if anyone can point me to how I can get the Daydream controller working, I'd be grateful.
Edit: Wiping VR services and reinstalling it seems to have it working so far. That couldn't have been done without root, I guess any average user who runs into this problem is SOL, just like the few search results of similar issues I found. Always root your phones kids.
But honestly, for non-Daydream usage, it's better off to uninstall all of it so your battery doesn't get lit on fire. Removing all of Goolag's BS will result in the phone running whatever VR video or app normally instead of having their Daydream/VR services running + NFC + Bluetooth + GPS + other BS they have running which makes the battery hit 50 ****ing degrees Celsius in 20 minutes rendering "Daydream" useless.

I guess you can uninstall the updates wthout root, then update. or download an apk and reinstall it. But yeah, not as surefire as root

That was the first thing I did since it could be done directly without an app like Titanium Backup (which is what I ended up using), but that didn't work. Fixing the bug required a full uninstallation of Google VR services.

Shield TV 2019 Ram Management

Hello. I was hoping someone who is experienced with both the standard and pro units of 2019 could help me in this matter. Both of these units are extremely hard to get ahold of right now or I would test myself, sorry to bother.
I was able to get my hands on a standard unit and everything is working as expected except it has horrible ram management. Either that or just lacking ram in general. I can't get any app to stay in ram. If I leave to simply look at the settings menu, when I return to the app it completely refreshes. I might, come back to see it in its same state if I only look at one app but don't click on anything, but thats not guaranteed.
No sense in even having an app switcher when it behaves like this. Its as if the developer option that forces all apps to close when you exit them is somehow enabled. I checked in developer settings and it shows disabled. I also disabled eco mode for all the apps I use and it didn't change anything.
I'm thinking the standard unit just doesn't have enough ram to keep up with demand. But i can't test to be sure. Can anyone with a pro unit confirm that they can browse through a few apps and then return to their original app and it be in the exact state you left it?
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
i've basic Shield and i also keep researching this frustrating issue. Some apps will return to their previous some not.. Plex (the most used app) is the most problematic, always restarts even when just going briefly to settings. Can't imagine it's poor on Pro unit also. That's why i keep Basic version, and only upgrade to "Pro Platinum 2021" with 8GB RAM later
i would really like the app switching LG TV does - but i must admit Shield UI can be even faster (when it's not freezing).
Stability ** (tons of freezes and crashes, fan should not run in quiet mode)
Speed ***** (ultra fast UI and apps especially can be faster than WebOS, the only slow app is Plex)
App management *** (poor app switching, nice app widgets on home layout, not good integration - can't search all content AGAIN grr.. yeat another device whose global search will only throw some youtube results)
Connectivity **** (Dolby vision flickers, otherwise nice companion to AV receiver and a must for TVs without eARC)
Control *** (i like the backlight buttons, but in the end i switched back to TV remote which can control it too, and can display inputs so well, and i hate more than 1 remote.. also arrow keys are so small that i'm making mistakes frequently)

I have a Shield TV 2017 and the new Shield TV Pro and they are all the same with ram managment. You pause a show and then go to another app or two and when you come back the entire app has to refresh and you have to find your show again to start it. Some apps refresh every time for no reason, just like you say. In comparison, the Apple TV 4k (which has the same exact 3gb of ram), can have as many as 11 apps open without refreshing and I can have 4 different movie streams paused at the same time and I can switch between them at any time. They end up staying in ram for many days at a time. Its nice to return to an app 4 days later to finish a movie and its right where you left it and all you have to do is unpause.

I have the MiBox 3 and never had this problem with less ram.
Have you found a solution yet?
Is there anything is the developers menu that we could tinker with?
