Shield TV 2019 Ram Management - Nvidia Shield TV & Shield TV Pro (2019) Questions

Hello. I was hoping someone who is experienced with both the standard and pro units of 2019 could help me in this matter. Both of these units are extremely hard to get ahold of right now or I would test myself, sorry to bother.
I was able to get my hands on a standard unit and everything is working as expected except it has horrible ram management. Either that or just lacking ram in general. I can't get any app to stay in ram. If I leave to simply look at the settings menu, when I return to the app it completely refreshes. I might, come back to see it in its same state if I only look at one app but don't click on anything, but thats not guaranteed.
No sense in even having an app switcher when it behaves like this. Its as if the developer option that forces all apps to close when you exit them is somehow enabled. I checked in developer settings and it shows disabled. I also disabled eco mode for all the apps I use and it didn't change anything.
I'm thinking the standard unit just doesn't have enough ram to keep up with demand. But i can't test to be sure. Can anyone with a pro unit confirm that they can browse through a few apps and then return to their original app and it be in the exact state you left it?
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

i've basic Shield and i also keep researching this frustrating issue. Some apps will return to their previous some not.. Plex (the most used app) is the most problematic, always restarts even when just going briefly to settings. Can't imagine it's poor on Pro unit also. That's why i keep Basic version, and only upgrade to "Pro Platinum 2021" with 8GB RAM later
i would really like the app switching LG TV does - but i must admit Shield UI can be even faster (when it's not freezing).
Stability ** (tons of freezes and crashes, fan should not run in quiet mode)
Speed ***** (ultra fast UI and apps especially can be faster than WebOS, the only slow app is Plex)
App management *** (poor app switching, nice app widgets on home layout, not good integration - can't search all content AGAIN grr.. yeat another device whose global search will only throw some youtube results)
Connectivity **** (Dolby vision flickers, otherwise nice companion to AV receiver and a must for TVs without eARC)
Control *** (i like the backlight buttons, but in the end i switched back to TV remote which can control it too, and can display inputs so well, and i hate more than 1 remote.. also arrow keys are so small that i'm making mistakes frequently)

I have a Shield TV 2017 and the new Shield TV Pro and they are all the same with ram managment. You pause a show and then go to another app or two and when you come back the entire app has to refresh and you have to find your show again to start it. Some apps refresh every time for no reason, just like you say. In comparison, the Apple TV 4k (which has the same exact 3gb of ram), can have as many as 11 apps open without refreshing and I can have 4 different movie streams paused at the same time and I can switch between them at any time. They end up staying in ram for many days at a time. Its nice to return to an app 4 days later to finish a movie and its right where you left it and all you have to do is unpause.

I have the MiBox 3 and never had this problem with less ram.
Have you found a solution yet?
Is there anything is the developers menu that we could tinker with?

Impressions after a week...

A lot of us have had the device for at least week now so it would be a good time to post impressions after a bit more hands on time. I’ll start...
10 days in I’m still glad I got it but there are plenty of things that could be improved. I’ve been on HTC phones (Desire, Desire Z) before this running at different times standard HTC Sense ROMs as well as various versions of Cyanogen Mod and AOSP based ROMs. My views after 2 weeks of use:
* Loving the fact that Samsung appears to be treating this almost like a developer phone (ala Nexus) in terms of open bootloader, availability of source code etc. I’ve said my goodbyes to HTC precisely because of this.
* Based on the frequency of updates Samsung also appears to be focused on addressing issues. They are one if the first out of the gates for Gingerbread updates to their existing devices so I’m hoping they continue to focus on delivering on the latest versions of Android.
* Touchwiz is not as invasive as HTC’s Sense. It improves on stock android in many ways. My first Samsung phone so I can’t really speak of improvements over previous versions of Samsung ROMs but so far I don’t hate TouchWiz but I do find that they seem to take a lot of inspiration from Apple even when the standard Android implementation is better in some cases (I didn’t hate HTC Sense either but I did find it too far from stock for my liking). Having said that there are some totally brain dead decisions that Samsung appear to have taken which I just don’t get:
1) Default home screen on the left instead of the middle. Why copy Apple on this one when Android’s default makes so much more sense. I love having frequently used apps with a swipe to the right and an agenda widget on the left so I can get to both with a single swipe. Now I have to pick one.
2) Fixed icons at the bottom. I understand Phone and Apps being fixed but not messaging and contacts. I’d like to change those - hell, even Apple lets you change those. *** NEVERMIND *** See posts below. It CAN be edited.
3) Lock screen - talk about making something worse - this one takes the cake. Thank god for widget locker.
4) Dialer logs - I don’t want my SMS messages to show up on my phone dialer logs. There is no option to just view all calls without the rest of the stuff cluttering it up. (Yes I know I can switch to Dialer One but apart from this one major issue I actually like the default Samsung dialer).
* Wireless - Everything wireless about this phone has issues. May be a function of how thin it is but my experience so far:
1) Phone - Much improved after the latest firmware updates but data connection can take a while to latch on when moving out of WiFi coverage and sometimes just drops out for 5-10 minutes at a time for no apparent reason (even when the phone shows five bars in a strong signal area).
2) Bluetooth - The headset I have is not working well at all. Quality seems fine but every few seconds drops out or gets noisy for a second or so. The same headset works perfectly well with the HTC devices as well as with an iPhone.
3) GPS - Sometimes flawless but lock time is definitely a lot slower than the HTC devices. It also has a tendancy to lose lock a lot easier than the HTC devices. Other times it jumps around all over the place before getting a lock. Lots of weird behaviour here.
4) WiFi - Where other phones get weak coverage this one gets none. If you have strong WiFi signals everywhere you use the device this is not an issue. 5 Ghz also performs significantly worse than 2 Ghz.
* Battery life - It appears this phone has only 2 gears. A low gear for phone / SMS / push mail / browsing where battery life is excellent but then kicks into hyper-turbo mode if you use Flash video, games or anything taxing where it burns through battery life in no time. You can easily get through a whole day with power to spare if you stick to only the basic activities but best to use everything else while plugged in.
The reality is even with all these issues, I couldn’t give this device up. The power and speed coupled with the slim form factor and gorgeous screen are just too damn impressive and all the problems pale in significance. I might have had buyers remorse if the HTC Sensation was coming with an open bootloader and a slimmer profile but at the moment I don’t see anything that compares. I’m just hoping Samsung can fix some of the problems I’ve listed in software.
Regarding fixed items at the bottom: you can edit them from within the applications screen.

You can change those - Go to app drawer-> menu -> edit -> and drop the app you wants.

Nice honest and informative post. Most of the issues will hopefully be fixable once we start getting some custom ROMs I'm hoping. Or hopefully fixes direct from Samsung in regards to GPS, WiFi, and 3G. I guess time will tell.

Very puzzling that Sammy would have issues in key connectivity areas on such a high profile phone. Wonder if they''re all antenna related? As you say, hopefully not, and it's all solvable with SW.
Homescreen order
C'mon guys - it's not that hard to reorder your homescreens...
Just pinch zoom (helicopter mode) longpress & drag.....
Hope this helps you...

The issue isn't re-ordering. It's changing the default home screen from the left (on TouchWiz) to the middle (As on stock Android / Sense etc)

in the old TW, it allowed users to change the default home screen. I have no idea what happened to the new TW

After my first day with this phone I switched to the the ADW Launcher, Samsung really didn't think the TouchWiz launcher through - not only the default homescreen being on the left, but also the fact that Apps in the drawer aren't sorted alphabetically.
I used to own the Samsung Galaxy Vibrant. It's disturbing that Samsung is still not getting the GPS working right!

I'm on the latest firmware but it's still pretty buggy...
I've tried switching to launcher pro but I still get crash reboots and loss of sound.
Last night I entered the pin and the phone just reboots.
I also loose the clicks on the pin screen. When this happens you have to reboot go get audio back...I tried playing an mp4 video with no sound when it was in this state and it just said unable to play. Of course it worked fine after a reboot...
So pretty buggy at the moment
mine has no bugs or what so ever, after 2 weeks of used i can never compare it to other phones performance either android or iOS,i used both before but this one is simply way above them..
no built in stock music widget was a dissapointment for me as well as the horrible lock screen style and the lag during wakeup..apart from that this phone is really amazing..but touchwiz needs some serious thought...

Agreed that this phone is as speedy and steady as the HTC Desire and iPhone 4 that I have owned. The trick to all these phones is that if you play around too much with settings, tweaks, launchers you are likely to get problems.

New A7 owner with a few questions please

An existing Asus Transformer owner who just picked up a factory refurbished A7 for $129 (let me know if interested in source). I really like this device - however, I did have a few issues for which I can't seem to find an answer for via search - wanted to see if someone could please help:
1. And way to enable the g-sensor fix without installing a custom ROM?
2. Any way to force wifi to stay on all of the time, so that I get alerted when new emails arrive instantly?
Thank you! Only rel drawback I see with this device is the lack of multi-touch, but other than games, I don't really use it much anyhow...

Factory firmware is crap period, your best bet is to load one of dexter mod, froyo, gingerbread or honeycomb rom, the dextermod 141 and patch 142 will solve both of your problem, 142 is by far the best thing that ever happen to the elocityA7..

Ok, thanks for your input. I was hesitant to upgrade to a custom ROM because they all seem to break bluetooth... But, I can't remember if dextermod breaks bluetooth or not. I think I'll start flashing away and checck out the alternatives out there (I also just realized that there is no ad-hoc support in stock firmware either).
Awesome little device though, especially for $129 - Same CPU as my Transformer in this little bad-boy! True honeycomb would be nice, be want do you want at this price level. Plus I saw that they are introducing the A7+ now, with true mutli-touch, higher-res, etc - so probably not much interest on their part in upgrading the original A7...
One last question - what about a TUN-capable kernel or the A7? Would love to be abe to VPN into my Cisco-powered office....
Thanks again!

Where did you source an a7 for $129? I was looking to pick up my first tablet and the best I've seen on a refurb is $169.

I can almost gurante you that no one who own the A7 will recommend the 7+, the reason i buy mine was to support an american company in pennsylvania, every time i call all they are intrested in is your personal info they never correct any shortcommings in their software if it wasn't for dexter this table would have die a long long time ago, i wonder what become of the 10" they were suppose to release..

- build.prop (ro.kernel.android.checkjni=false) enables Skype to function (and maybe other apps)
- usb stick support added.
- changed sdcard handler to stock, but with exception it only work until you eject sdcard/usb , and a reboot is only way to remount (or restart vold daemon which is from a shell)
- honeycomb bootanimation added.
- Files app added (for copying network files to tablet) is buggy with pictures handling in folders. (might be removed again)
- VPN (script + vpn settings enabled/added)
- HDMI resolution changer added in settings (480p -> 1080p output available)

Really? I was pretty impressed with this little device even with the stock firmware (especially for $129!). I might even consider the 7+ when it comes out. I owned a $250 B&N Nook Color and this is WAY nicer than that was!
Although, I do believe that Asus has spoiled me with firmware updates, etc - I've never seen a company support their products like Asus does - I love all of the constant firmware updates....

Where did you get the A7 for $129 ?. I just got one from 1saleaday for $149 and thought that was the best price around. I went back to 1saleaday for another one and like it says, it's for one day only. I would like to get one for my son at college since I think it is great once you put on Dexters Rom. Do you have a site????
Thanks Demi
Sure - you can get them @ MicroCenter for $129 everyday, BUT, I found that is an in-store only thing - can't order online. Not sure why they are so cheap, especially being sold @ retail stores! I'm wondering if they should have been $229! Shhh - don't tell anyone - I want to pick up another one for my son too! I originally bought this one for him for christmas, but I liked it so much that I decided to keep it!
So, unless you live close to a MicroCenter, the best I've heard of is $169 @ NewEgg I think it was....
Anyone know of a wifi keep-alive program that works with the A7? I want my wifi to be on 24/7 so that I get alerted instantly of new emails, etc... Besides that, I've found that it just takes way to long to reconnect and go through all of the new email checks, etc every time I turn the unit on it takes the A7 a few minutes to "get caught up" (system is too slow to use while this is occuring), which kind of defeats the purpose of "always on".
I've tried the CM7 setting to never turn off wifi, but it doesn't seem to work (wifi is still off when i turn the A7 back on).
This is the LAST stumbling block I've run into with the A7 - everything has been solved (ad-hoc, G-sensor fix, Market, TUN-capable kernel) - if I could fix this last thing I'd be really happy!
Anyone? Please?
Thanks in advance!
Unfortunately, tablet will turn off all connections if backlight = 0
The only way to avoid this problem is BackLightKiller. It turns backlight to 0.1 or less but not equal 0, so tablet will work and wifi will work
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967931
Additionally you must use another app to restore WiFi it it suddenly turns off...
Interesting - I never had it be so hard to force wifi to stay on before on any other device - now I know why (disabled backlight=disabled network connections) - strange.
Thank you very much for the explanation and the workaround - I'll give it a shot today! Does it really destroy your battery life? I guess it would be nice if it were easy to swtich between always-on (w/backlight hack) and the default scheme - this way you could just "enable" forced-wifi whenever you needed it....
Thanks again - I'll give it a shot a report my findings!
Couldn't get BackLightKiller to work... I installed it on my A7 and when I run it, I just get a blank screen with the title "BackLightKiller" at the top. If I press the Menu button, I get an About and a Settings. I'm just not sure what I'm supposed to do with this app to make it work....
Has anyone got this app working on the A7 (and actually keeping wifi on during sleep)??
Thanks!

What do you want this app to do? This app only sets backlight to 0.1, so tablet consumes less energy, but still working and wifi is working, and you able to get email.
Nvidia was freaky when constructed first reference plate on tegra2 aka harmony.
When you pressing power - you pulling tablet in sleepmode like hibernite in microsoft windows. Even alarm stopping work and tablet does not receive any signals except power on.

That exactly what I want - everything on, but brightness set as low as possible. However, this app doesn't seem to do anything with the brightness... When I run the app, all I get is a black screen with a white title bar that says the name of the app. Is the screen supposed to go completely black when you run the app (by turning the brightness down)? If so, thats not happening with mine. The white title bar is at normal brightness and never goes away....

In our case we can not do more. Backlightkiller paints black on 95% display and it consumes less power definitely.
You can use Screen Filter from my list - it sets brightness.

Interesting.... Oh well, thanks for your help! I'm not sure it uses any less power though, becasue the backlight is still at the same brightness, just a blank screen....
This is a major issue with this tablet for my use, which really sucks - I really liked this little thing! But, if it can't even tell me when I get a new email, then it's not very useful to me. Time to rebox it and give to it my 9-year old fr Christmas, I guess! Damn...
Do you think there is any chance the CM7 wifi-disconnect policy will ever work properly for the A7?
Thanks again!
EDIT: Ouch - it's even worse than I thought - even things like Alarms will not wake up the device in order to sound the alarm! Ugh! Surely, I'm not the only one that sees this as a huge usability issue?
Market Help?
I have the Elocity A7, have had it for a few weeks now, running Dexter's 142 update. Works great in every respect ( I can deal with the multi touch lack) except that I cannot get the Market to allow me to purchase apps. I can get the free ones all day long, but get an error every time I try to purchase one. I am using the same account as on my phone, which works just fine. I have tried installing the latest market update and cleared the cache for the market app, still not working for apps that require purchase.
Any ideas?

Found a fully functioning ATSC tv tuner.

Hello all,
I just wanted to let all who are interested know that the MyGica A681 USB stick works 100%. I have it hooked up to one of those flat window mount antennas and it receives full HD signal that I view through the PadTV app found on Play Store. The PadTV app lacks in a lot of ways, it would be cool if someone around here was able to come up with something better. A few of the channels have a major A/V delay but it may be due to reception and not the tuner stick or app. Overall, it was a very worthwhile purchase for me, if anyone has any questions let me know.
Hopefully this is useful information for a cord-cutter somewhere. I'm not in any way affiliated with MyGica, just a fellow MOJO owner who couldn't find any info on a TV Tuner stick that would work with our boxes so I took the dive on my own.
Thanks buddy, this is a great discovery!

No problem. I've pretty much been doing a lot of my own discovering what works since there's not much documentation for our devices. Like I said in my first post, it would be awesome if someone around here was able to come up with something better for a channel surfing app. PadTV gets the job done, but it's certainly not the prettiest. I forgot to mention that it also does DVR, but one of my issues is that it will only save to internal storage and not something like an external drive or an SD card. The channel info/current episode descriptions are several hours behind. If theres a button on my remote for Channel +/-, I haven't found it. You have to use your mouse to bring up and scroll through channels. Again, it gets the job done, I can watch 39 or so OTA channels, and quite a few of which are HD. It's just not the most MOJO friendly UI, since it was intended for phones.
Some other things I use daily that work 100%: Ouya controller (as 2nd controller), Plugables brand 7x USB 3.0 hub, & a Rii Mini i8 keyboard. Obviously stuff like my Logitech Bluetooth receiver that I run to my stereo also works to receive audio from MOJO. My USB wired Logitech PC game controller works great as well.
Just trying to help fellow XDA'ers and Googlers not worry about compatibility before they order something like I did. That said, most if not all of my worries were completely unfounded because everything I've thrown at the MOJO so far works like a charm!
Would a wired XBox 360 controller work?

I don't have one to test but I'm 99% sure it would.
I'd just like to clarify a point: it may sound like nitpicking, but it's not the PadTV app that works; it's the PadTV-HD app. The standard PadTV just says it can't find a device.
That being said, the little MyGica is a little giant. I live in a fringe reception area, for decent reception I need a huge rooftop antenna, but this little thumb-drive-sized receiver still picks up a round dozen stations on the 10-cm piece of coat hanger wire it comes with. Yes, the weaker stations have audio lag problems; I hope a better antenna fixes that. It also costs about half what other similar units do, and most of them work on windows only.
I tried a few of the other TV apps on Play Store but the PadTV-HD was the only one that recognized the A681. I didn't find it all that bad an interface, except that the sidebars won't stay in place longer than a couple seconds, and I couldn't find a setting for that. It also lacks a volume control, as the MOJO itself does, so you must hope you have some control somewhere else. And there is no info in the EPG (electronic program guide) even though it appears to have that function. But I was able to find and watch several different channels without any real problems; except, of course, that TV programming in general sucks. Unless you're a sports fan.
So thanks, @tideee88, for the heads-up here!

Yes, thank you for mentioning that it is in fact the PadTV HD app. Hope I didn't cause anyone any confusion. I also had no luck trying other tuner apps and I tried literally every one available on Play Store (including non-ATSC ones) and even tried sideloading a few because I dislike PadTV HD so much.
I agree that the MyGica stick is a great little device. I'm really impressed with it when it's able to do it's thing properly. I never tried the dinky little antenna it came with, I ordered a 25-mile distance flat window-mount antenna and it gets me about 39 channels here in Pittsburgh, PA. Lots of them are HD, and look and sound great. However, many of the Play Store reviews for PadTV HD seem to indicate that the slow motion, lag, and stuttering are a result of the app not taking advantage of hardware acceleration and thus is trying to encode 1080p on the fly via software rendering or something to that effect. Other than the mild inconveniences of things like not having a dedicated button for CH +/- and as you noted, the channel info being totally useless, it's a real bummer that I can't even get the channels I could be getting if it weren't for a poorly written app that is unfortunately our only option at the moment. I feel as though this is a real hole that could be filled with the rate at which Android set top boxes are becoming popular.
I mostly purchased this because the only time I ever need to watch broadcast TV is when my Steelers are on and hence have no use to pay for cable. I'm really hoping we have a new app sorted out before football season because FOX is one of the channels that currently comes in very laggy and out of sync for me at the moment.
Your MOJO doesn't have volume control, though? It certainly should. Do the hardkeys not work on your C.T.R.L.R.? Android system volume works perfect for me in all apps. Failing that, I've found you can change the volume in Pad TV HD by clicking somewhere in the video frame and dragging your mouse up or down, like a swipe if it were touch. Hopefully that helps!

I'll try the volume control thing. I'm using CM12.1 and maybe it has a volume control somewhere but I haven't found it yet, I'm used to hardware switches. I'm not using the CTRLR either, just a keyboard & mouse. I'm still working on display resolution problems, as I don't really have the right display hardware for the MOJO, and it's picky that way. I'm about to give up entirely on the powered HDMI-2-VGA adapter to the 1280x1024 computer monitor, too unreliable even just in Android. Neither it nor the HDMI-2-DVI cable to the old Dell monitor will display at all in recovery, for that I have to commandeer the living room and the only true HDMI display in the house, which is a projector--not the best setup for tweaking a device. Still doing my homework on tweaking TWRP to 720P which I hope will solve that problem.

I'm running a rooted stock rom via HDMI so I'm not sure about your display issues as I haven't had any. But I use a bluetooth keyboard/mouse most of the time and the volume hardkeys work on that as well. If your keyboard has volume hardkeys and they don't work, it may be some sort of issue with your rom. AFAIK, my keyboard's drivers are just generic Windows ones.

Same display issues regardless of ROM. AFAIK there are only four, and I tried them all. (This is a very rare instance of me following my own advice: try all the different flavors before deciding on a favorite.) Several people have reported similar issues while in system but I think I'm unique in the recovery problem. Changing the resolution by editing the build.prop improved my display in system but did nothing in recovery; I will just have to carry the MOJO into the living room whenever I need to use recovery, which shouldn't be that often. The bright side is that I learned to unpack and repack recovery images.
My keyboard is a wired mini with no extra room for media keys, but it does have a third control key (FN) to emulate them. But I can't see the blue-on-black icons to use them unless the room is brightly lit! Volume control is not a biggie for me though, I run the audio through a seventies-vintage amp and speakers. I pity those who grew up with "modern" surround sound, satellite speakers and a single subwoofer. My setups often fool both myself and the dogs, we can't tell if the noise is outside the open door or inside the TV.
BTW Windows keyboard drivers won't work on Android, but it's such a low-level thing they are just included in the kernel. Somewhere in the ROM is a keyboard map that can be edited (with root of course), but I misremember where. I never had to remap a keyboard.
PadTV HD app no longer works for me as of the latest update. For anyone considering purchasing a tuner, I recommend against it. Flushed $40 down the toilet.
If you'd like I'll send you the old version, I'll just need to save it then upload it. You'd just have to uninstall the newer version then sideload the old one and not allow it to update. Just PM me.

Stabilizing Shield Tablet Smoothness

I may have discovered a way to make Shield Tablet very smooth and stable very consistently. I don't have the technical backing for it - im just a regular user doing trial and error. I hope it helps the others who want to keep this awesome Device live up to its potential...longer.
So here's my Device setup:
- Shield Tablet US-LTE
- using stock 5.4 debloated for K1 by Sh0X31 for K1 (yes, it works well with my us-lte as long as you don't care about system updates and stylus app)
- rooted via magisk
- Xposed framework
- Nova launcher
Using the ROM as it is significantly improved the performance of the device compared to stock 5.4 for US or RoW LTE. But the sluggish experience Everytime the device wakes up from deep slumber, or connects to WIFI for the first time, is still there. Using Antutu system monitor on the notification panel, I could correlate the sluggish performance with the CPU hitting above 94%. That happens 99% of the time so I suspected that most of the persistent sluggish performance is a CPU issue rather than a RAM issue. So I looked for a way to pinpoint which apps are hogging CPU operations, and hopefully discover what triggers it.
I tried enabling CPU usage in Developer's Options but alas, it could only show com.android.systemui so nothing much can be done from there. I understand this is a bug in Android 7 and it was supposed to be fixed on 7.1 but we all know Shield Tablet is stuck at 7.0 for now.
Next I tried checking out Running Services, still in Developer's Option. So I saw a lot of apps there that seem to be hogging CPU - Malwarebytes, ShareIt, Antutu, Google Services, etc. I uninstalled Malwarebytes and ShareIt but the CPU was still operating at 94% and it takes the device a few seconds to respond to my inputs.
Finally, I noticed these Nvidia-specific processes - these few KBs of operations particularly the ones for OTA upgrade and Media as well as Nvidia -customize (something like that). I forced them to stop and voila! My device CPU suddenly calmed somewhere between 30-50% and as expected, it's operating smoothly and snappily.
When I rebooted, those Nvidia processes naturally became active. I suspect that it's probably part of the device startup process. And as expected as well, whenever they're present the device is expected to go sluggish at some point before its CPU can calm down again.
So now, it's been 2 days and my CPU operates between 18-54% on normal operation, sometimes hitting 80% when I transfer files or play games. But it has NEVER gone sluggish, not even once (waking from deep slumber, connecting to WIFI, etc). I'm very satisfied and back to enjoying my Shield Tablet.
DISCLAIMER: I don't have proof that this is indeed the solution. I can't explain it technically as well. Hoping someone with more knowledge on system process can enlighten us. One thing I'm convinced though is that the sluggishness we all experience comes from NVIDIA-specific processes. I make this inference from my observation that having AOSP ROMs make the device smooth consistently. But I don't like any other custom ROMs coz I need the controller support for the tablet. I hope I make sense and hopefully this could help some Shield Tablet Fans. Sorry for the long write up.
Thanks for the post! If you want to try and dig deeper into this, consider using Tasker, I believe it can be used to make those force stops automatic on start up. Good luck!

Thanks for the TIP. I've checked it out in Google Play, the paid version listed what it can do. Need to study if it can disable those mentioned process at startup.
I really wished Nvidia would finally make it's firmware documentation open to the public.

Android 10 stable UI lag

Hi,
I've noticed a UI lag when switching between apps or transitioning from an open app to home screen. This didn't happen in the Android 10 beta rom. Anybody have the same issue? I clean flashed the stable android 10.
I can confirm this issue in the stable release. But I would like to add that this lag was already in the beta release and is in my testing not app specific. I would clear the cache and make a reboot.
Go into developer options and disable the three animation types. Everything runs MUCH faster with them off.

I have, and while it does suppress animations, it actually feels less polished. And anyway, it does not resolve the UI lag which is really visible when using th app switcher. It's dropping below like 10fps. As if some gfx acceleration was disabled or the phone was completely overwhelmed
Anyone found a fix? I experience the lag every once in a while, though it's prevalent enough to be annoying.
I am having this literally every time i use the alt-tab like feature. Oneplus managed to **** up the one thing (butter smooth) Google has been bragging about for several versions ???
A simple fix would be toh format device once, as I have clean flashed and I don't face any lags

doesn't change a thing. (and am wondering it would. This feature is supposed to make smoothness (even) better, not worse)
Turn off auto brightness .. maybe it can help
I have been reading up on the A10 stable release posts and I saw a lot of people mentioning the issue that you are talking about here.
Many of them suggested a full format. So basically setting up your device as a new device.
I cannot confirm if this works for everyone but a lot of people are saying that after a fresh install they are not facing any issues.
All of the points mentioned above are just what I read from xda and op forum posts. I personally have not made the switch yet and probably wont be doing so soon.
Hey guys. I encountered the same problem on my Nokia 9. Not quite sure why this error doesn't get noticed by more people.
I think I fixed it for me though.
In my case it seemed that the OLED always on screen (which shows notifications and the time) was the problem in my case. It would always show that there are notifications even if there weren't any and that started adding up. So while the rest of my phone ran buttery smooth, the notification bar and lockscreen began looking like a Diashow. 2-5 fps sometimes. What I think is happening is that all these notifications are buggy and the always on screen can't get rid of them.
So my fix was turning that off and then restarting my phone. Since that everything runs smooth again.
If there is another thread I should post this to please tell me but I only found this one.
Hope it helped.

I think the issue is just : it's a ****show of awful coding, optimisation and non-existent testing. If manufacturers' programmers put in half the effort debugging their software we as "powerusers" at xda/reddit/... put twisting our brains in and out trying find correlating explanations and workarounds as to why we get UI lags or other absurd bugs (like 5GHz wifi not working anymore) on the 10th ****ing iteration of Android, we wouldn't have all of this. It all boils down to the general idea that because it is consumer grade product, quality check is just a non-subject. Apparent quality is just enough at product launch, and further updates (if they do get round to releasing them) can brake everything without manufacturers being held accountable.
The update showed up on my phone on the 25th, but, I'm NOT updating. 9 is too damn stable for me, & I don't see any "features" in 10 that will benefit me.
After reading all this i am not going to update to 10. Yet happy with 9.17.
Tmob unbranded dual sim op6t.
Narrowed down some parameters
I have the OnePlus 6, and have similar issues, that include swapping apps being slow, but not just the swapping of apps, any app that has typing in it, seems to DIE when I start typing. Maybe this is a google keyboard issue or something? I notice the issue most in the Microsoft Teams mobile app. It also tends to only happen when at least 2 apps are open, if it's on it's own, it seems to do fine.
This might just be coincidence but I went into dev settings and turned on "strict mode" and now I can't get it to lag like it previously did.
I just looked at my running services (dev options > running services) and saw that my Bluetooth was using 2.2GB of ram, and youtube was 1.7GB of that. I toggled bluetooth off, then back on and it reset this. I have not modified the strict mode setting above... still have not had any lag, will update this thread if I do get more lag.

Lagging issue I've seen many reporting in xda on the stock rom OOS 10.3.0. But 5GHz is working as expected. I can confirm it because I'm using 5GHz WiFI now and then

After a night/day of normal testing with this, where I would normally have issues, I have not had and of the lag I mentioned above. This seems to have fixed some things. So, I would suggest that you first check to see what running processes are using all the ram, and then turn on strict mode in dev settings, if that doesn't solve your issues. I also have Ram Boost option turned off.
I experience the FPS drop quite often after the update. It's especially noticable when scrolling pages, switching between apps, pulling down the upper panel. The slowness seems to disappear temporarily after closing all apps. But I can't say that some particular app causes the lag.
UPD: A simple test to recreate the problem. I push the square button to switch between apps. Start swiping finger left-right and watch the animation smoothness. After 5-10 seconds comes the wave of low FPS, which lasts for a couple of seconds. Then the process repeats. The slowness doesn't seem to depend on some exact apps that are open.
UPD2: Well, I've just found out that the problem isn't constant throughout the day. There must be some connection to applications running in the background or something like this.
