[Q] Impossibile to cook any ROM for this device - Windows Mobile

I am cooking a W.M. Rom for my device: a Toshiba Portege G910.
A few people know this device and they tell me that I can not cook any Rom because the device is not "coockable" or it has locked bootloder.
In fact no one done any custom Rom for it and I don't know any Kitchen that officially support the G910.
1---How can I unlock the bootloder or Root the device?
2---If I flash the Rom I'm making, will the flash not work or will I brick my device?

Here I ask if I can use OS Kitchen

The type of the kitchen has NO connection to your possibility to flash device. You can cook any rom but if bootloader is locked - you can not flash unsigned (custom-made) rom.
Advise for the future - if you can not write HSPL by yourself - first make sure that the device you had chosen to have fun IS FLASHABLE. Than start cooking.

The keyword is Official Rom. That means - DIGITALLY SIGNED rom from vendor. Bootloader allows to flash signed roms. And anticipating your possible next question - No, you can't digitally sign your self-made rom.

It's strange, why only my device do this? Other Toshiba models has custom Roms like ALL device ...

I read that is impossible to cook ROMS also for HTC devices, only that HTC releases files that allow to cook.
The Touch Pro is similar to my device, can I use the HTC's "unlock-bootloader software" on my Toshiba device?
In your opinion Will it work? Please Help

Touch HD Customizing: WinMo 6.5, yes or no? Cooked ROM / New Manila / Manila Editor!?

Hello out there,
finally I arrived thinking about customizing my standard-HD-Config.
I'm now wondering about possibilities coming along with a cooked ROM like Duttys:
Is it faster than the normal ROM? Does it make sense to take these efforts to change the ROM? What are your experiences?
Moreover, what advantages do I have when using an updated manila-version? Faster, less problematic, more comfortable? What are your experiences?
And finally: can I use the Manila Editor without a cooked ROM?
Thanks for your answers!
the answer is yes to all of your questions!!!!
Yes almost every rom made by rom chefs is faster than stock rom, by tests it sometimes may seem slower but in real life use its much faster!!! less hangs, more speed
updated manila version- well everyone uses it because its more comfortable - calendar tab & settings in manila & their finger friendly (like- to set alarm you dont need stylus but only your fingers)
Yes you can use manila editor with a stock manila (just make sure you choose the right home layout in editor!! )
When I started to flash roms there wasnt any new manila, only the stock one, but roms were a lot faster than stock ones---- now there are new manilas and the roms have been tweaked so they are a lot & a lot more faster than stock roms!!
Hey Kristaps,
thx for the answer.
Are there any ROMs being recommended by you? Are there ROMs with new Manila Versions (TF3D 2.0 / 2.5)? And: are there Manila not based on TF3D you can recommend?

well I cant recomend, cuz it can hurt some rom chef feelings
but I suggest you get your device a Hard-SPL and flash some roms and see which one is the fastest -- I flash one rom, get bored of it, flash another, then I think that the previous rom was faster and whait for a new version of it!!
as for roms with TF3D 2.... there are a lot of them just open a thread for a rom and find the manila version in the threads first page -- Rom chefs usualy post manila info in first few posts!!!
not based on TF3D --- I dont really know, but I think that WM6.5 Roms have a different UI --- but you can always turn off manila and install a different UI like SPB mobile shell (I like TF3D moore!!! )

Understand that, perhaps you could recommend via message if you want to!
Concerning HSPL: I don't really understand what this is? Do I have to change my HSPL before flashing?

A lot of roms out there worth recommending but this depends on what you are looking for, i.e. WM6.1 or 6.5. A Lite or Heavy rom (i.e. amount of software on rom) etc etc. Best advice is to read up on each and install them and make your own opinion on each.
Read this guide on how to flash roms
As for manilla versions. At the start of each rom thread it will give you this information. Most new roms are based on either manila V2.0 or V2.1. V2.5 hasn't just come out yet on any roms, though I know a number of cooks are working on them for new roms.

You will need HSPL or USPL on device before you can flash any cooked rom.
The difference between USPL and HSPL:
HSPL is an user-modified SPL that you have to flash to your phone. It overwrites the existing SPL on your device with a "hacked" one so to say. It allows you to bypass the HTC certificate check and flash unsigned or CID-mismatching roms to your phone. You only have to flash it once and then you can flash roms anytime.
USPL is a temporary solution. It takes advantage of an exploit in the existing SPL and then loads a modified one to memory, effectively allowing the same thing as HSPL. However, since this is only memory-resident you have to do it each time you want to flash unsigned or CID-mismatching roms to your phone, because this exploited state is lost upon reboot. With USPL you must still have the right version of the HTC SPL that is compatible with the rom you want to use.

I'd be surprised if the phone is worth much in 10 years, but yes you can undo HSPL. You will need to restore stock SPL.
Read USPL3 in this thread. Will restore SPL to stock 1.54.0000

[Q]please help me guys

Hi, I have elfin (HTC Touch) and I have Windows Mobile 6 professional and I want to upgrade it to 6.5 so can anyone type me a link so I can download the ROM directly because there is more than one ROM in the forum and I'm afraid to download a wrong one so please help me...thanks
First you read this guide completely.
Link:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406721
I read it well and I knew big information about my elfin but really I don't know how to start please tell my what to do first I can tell you the info about my elfin
ROM Version:2.20.707.1B WWE

EXT ROM Version:2.20.707.101
Windows Mobile 6 Professional
CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2)
mind my sarcasm...but he meant to say...to upgrade your device without damaging it...you will need to follow some instructions....and if you read it well and if you are a sane guy...then you would atleast EDIT your POST and remove the god damn IMEI of your device....people dont give away their IMEI jus like that you know...its something only you should know...and jus so you know...i m not trying to piss you off cos you are as we call a newbie....so here is a breakdown of what you need to do
1. your device is an ELFIN...so we know
2. jus like you unlock your sim to use your phone...you need to unlock your device...(so that it becomes writable)
3. to do so...you would need to make use of a part of software called USPL and IPL...USPL does the part of keeping your device unlocked...and IPL needs to remain the same series....if you flashed a USPL of 3.XX then your IPL shud be 3.XX series
4. now do the reading on your own this time and discover all flavours of 6.5 ROMS available here....
btw i wonder why you havent tried the official 6.1 ROM from HTC
thanks so much, first i don't know even the difference between the 6.1 and the 6.5 but when i saw some topics about 6.5 and the people said that it works better with the HTC touch so I think in that, now i made a backup ROM from the one i have is that good step and i already downloaded 2 different ROMs from the forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552371 , http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426540)
but how can i make the device rewritable is there a application i can download? and what's your opinion to upgrade to 6.1 or 6.5?

There's is no problem about being not rewritable or sort! Once you CID unlock and upgrade your IPL/SPL, you can upgrade or degrade your device to any ROM you like whenever u like!
About opinions, there are alot of people here and would obviously have their own different opinions and so you will have too! I'd ask you to try out ROMs yourself and use the suitable one you choose. If you'd like to have a stable ROM, i'd advice you to use the 6.1 ROMs and if you'd like to have newer latest builds, you can go for the 6.5 ROMs (which have been optimized to their best stable by respective cooks). In the end, its up to you which you choose as your BEST ROM!
PS: Do read if the ROM is suitable for your device, in this case- Elfin and few FAQs posted out by the ROM cook. Respect others work and last but not least Read & Search before asking Questions!!
Thank you very much I finally upgraded my elfin to windows mobile 6.5 and it's awesome but i still have one more thing i want to make it read and write Arabic language without convert the whole interface is there a patch? I already searched about that and i found a file but it's not an application and I don't know how to use it. before that in my old 6.0 i downloaded an application when i install it, it solves the whole situation then i tried it with the 6.5 but the start menu won't open after i installed it so i formatted the ROM.

hi, first of all, the backup you have done is probably not ready to be flashed, so whatever you do, dont flash that again or u will brick your phone.
arabic? take a look at this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=426281
and finally, i think it will be better if u update ur ipl to 3.10 too.

what he means is....you may brick the device with the backup you just created. so if you wana restore your original...which is the one you have backed up now...you should and can only flash that by making use of USPL or HSPL...search the forum for USPL and HSPL...and you will be given guides...
btw...you really like writing in bold letters eh...kinda makes us feel we are blind...

How to change HTC HD2 Taiwanese Chinese language to English version?

Please help, Anybody know to re flash ROM from Taiwanese Chinese version to English version?
Will this process damage the phone? I heard the hardware is different for Taiwanese version (from the customer service in Taiwan)
I called HTC customer service they wont help me!!, I bought wrong I thought is easy to change language. I wish I knew
Thanks for your help
uhm, by reading the Tutorials in this forum

Don't worry. Also I bought my HD2 from Taiwan. Official Rom was Taiwanese. Now, I use Customized rom which is English
Firstly you need to install HSPL, and then you can install any of customized rom. It's very easy. You can use an English rom in few minutes. I use XannyTech Pandora 1.6 and I'm very happy with this rom. You should use too.

Hi volkansa, Thanks for help to answer my question.
Dio you mind to give me the link and instruction to do this HSPL and how to back up the original ROM just incase I got in trouble. Im very rookie on this
Thanks
Actually, I don't know any backup tool for full rom. But you don'y need to backup current rom. If you install HSPL, you can use any customized rom when you are any trouble. For example My first rom was crashed, and I downloaded another customized rom and I had easily install another customized rom with CustomRUU.exe file.
- For HSPL instruction, you should check first page of HTC Leo: HD2 > HD2 ROM Development section. You will see "[HSPL] How to Flash Everything " on that section. Then click it the link.
- and find the link of HSPL.zip then download and install it from your computer while your phone connected to your pc with ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center which are depends your Windows Operation System. If you use XP you should use ActiveSync; if you use Vista or Windows 7 you should use Windows Mobile Device Center.
- After installation your phone will restarted and then it will be ready for new customized roms.
- Now you need to get backup of your personal datas such as Messages, Contact List, Call Logs, Speed Dial records etc. I use PimBackup utility for them you can try it, if you want. It's very easy. And also you should use Storage Device for backup. It's very important. If you use main storage, you will lost your backups after flashing new rom.
- Then pick you favorite roms and download it. Then use instruction of that customized rom. That's it. You have a new rom

Some really really simple queries

Hey guys,
I have been browsing this forum extensively for the past two days and must say there is wealth of resources here and lot of knowledge sharing.
However I find that most of the threads are bit on the steep side for a Windows mobile novice like me to understand. I just got a new HD2 few days back.
Can some one please give a one line meanings of below terms and if possible links on this site or elsewhere that can give a lay mans definition. Once I got a hang of the terms then I can go around on my own. I am sure there are many like me.
- HSPL (I saw the main HSPL thread but does not explain what is HSPL)
- Flashing
- Cooked ROM, stock ROM
- Radio
- SPL
Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome!
You might want to read this wiki:

It should cover all of the above (it is designed for a non-HD2 device, but the explanations aren't dependant on model).

"HSPL" or "Hard SPL" is a bootloader. What this means is that it's software that goes on your phone which is invoked as the phone loads, and from there loads the operating system and/or presents and executes other advanced functions.
The default bootloader is "locked" so that only signed ROMs can be flashed. HSPL un-"locks" this so you can flash any ROM.

"Flashing" refers to writing to ROM. When you "flash" a phone you write a new operating system to its ROM.

A "stock" ROM is one distributed and/or made by the OEM. A "cooked" ROM is one distributed and/or made by a non-OEM.
The ROMs you can download from HTC's site are "stock".
The ROMs you can download in the ROM forum are "cooked".

A bootloader for the phone. The "H" in "HSPL" means "Hard" meaning it's un-"locked".
Great responses.
rp-x1,
Thats precisely the kind of url I was looking for. It explains fair bit on SPL. Are there any other pages here, perhaps one which is indexed or a step by step tutorials going further into flashing and explaining other terms?
Spike 15,
Thanks for the definitions.
So I understand that 'flashing' is a Winmo term for actually changing the core rom.
If i relate it to Windows terminology, then I guess ROM in WinMo is similar to set of custom dll, exe's in Windows that affects the core OS.
Also, what is a signed and unsigned ROM? I know in Symbian we have signed and unsigned apps but they can be self signed, I guess this must be something similar.
- Is installing HSPL (the one on this forum) recommended?
- How would I determine that I need to upgrade or change to another ROM be it stock or cooked?
For e.g. I tried installing the new HTC rom from their website but I got an invalid vendor id. I believe that is because my phone is locked to T Mobile UK. Would HSPL + a WWE ROM unlock the phone?
Thanks again.

Bringing up thread.
Can someone please respond?
Should I really install HSPL or a Soft SPL?
If it is HSPL can I use the one given on this
link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433
Should i use the HSPL.zip and HSPL2_RUN.zip ?
I am locked to T Mobile but want to use O2, will Hard SPL allow me to do that? Means if I do HSPL and then flash a WWE rom
Thanks
Metal,
Before you do anything there has been early Tmobile USA hd2's out there so i have to ask... do you have a hd2 from europe or from USA.
the new TMobile USA hd2 has SPL 2.X.X, the hspl you see around is for the europe one and WILL NOT work on TMO USA HD2.
U asked if it was recommended... well it does void the warranty... but you can go backwards if needed to send into repairs, but that scares some people in to even attempting this for a 500-800 dollar device.
Now away from that part of it, yes unlocking your phone allows you to flash these "cooked" roms into your phone... which by theory will make your phone work faster, better, and do things it "should have" out the box. There are normally little treats as well as built in software that makes your experience better because you don't have to load on apps and slow down your phone because they are already "cooked" into the ROM.
Boredtonite,
Thanks for the reply.
I am on T Mobile UK, so I assume that it is the European version.
I had a look at few vids on youtube regarding flashing and then reverting it back, so it does not look that difficult to me.
Only thing that I want to know is if I should do it, if yes which is the correct version I should use.
Can anyone provide me the link to the correct version of HSPL that I should use for my T Mobile UK phone
Also once I run that is it recommended if I flash the HTC wwe rom from its website?

[GUIDE]ROM FLASHING For NooBs| includes Make&Flash with GOLDCARD|

Well lately i have noticed a lot of first timers have joined this community with Wildfire.. We affectionately call them noobs .. SO here is my guide to flashing rom right now its very simple anyone can do it without this guide but for all the first timers who are feeling uneasy or unusual I hope this will help.
Note::WILDFIRE is now completely rooted GO HERE and follow the instructions to root your phone.
In Case you need MORE ROOTING INSTRUCTIONS JUST CLICK.
UPDATE:: If you have already rooted your phone or planning to root it you can get the CUSTOM ROMs Wildpuzzle here
Vibes v1.1 One Stable and one under trial ROM. You can contribute by testing the new ones. thanks.
IMPORTANT:: If you are planning to install a custom rom leave this guide Now without following the steps below and follow the Rom flashing instructions at the Custom Rom Page.
Update :: Flashing ROMS with Goldcard ?? Well HERE IS THE COMPLETE GUIDE INLUDING:
1>How to create Goldcard?
2>How to flash roms with goldcard?
STEP 1 > Go to www.shipped-roms.com and download the rom relevant to your area which you want to flash. Mind this a Uk rom cant be flashed on a phone with Indian Rom i.e Rom from different areas can not be swapped until unless it is rooted make sure to download ROM from your region.
Edit 1: In case you have already rooted your phone and want to get adventurous you can download custom ROMs or Any ROM for your device you can flash any (Wildfire)ROM.
STEP 2 Download HTC Sync™ 3.0.5387 if you dont already have it. Just enter the serial no. which can be found on wildfire Box box and install it on the PC/Laptop you want to sync your phone data with.
STEP 3 After installation connect your PC and Phone with provided USB cable and on the prompt/notification on your phone select HTC sync.
Now very important :: Sync your phone and Backup your data, messages, mails and contacts. You can use backup apps from the market too.
NOW FLASHING TIMESTEP 4 Its Advisable to keep your phone more than 50% charged. Now run the RUU_*_#.exe ie rom file you had downloaded in STEP 1.
STEP 5 Just Follow the on screen instructions on your PC/Laptop.
TAKE CARE:: During the flashing
>>>do not disconnect the USB cable.
>>>The phone will enter the boot-loader mode during this time.
The whole process will take around 10 minutes.
UPDATE: All those who want to Unroot or remove Root just Flash Official RUU***.exe
Have Fun.
Thank you so much, I will use it later.
One question for step 1.: shipped-roms.com are not adding new ROMs since 20. July 2010. Are there any other sources for new ROMs?

Thank you very much for the guide, it realy sounds very simple!
I am a total newbie, never had a smartphone before, never had to deal with ROMs, etc, and I am thinking of getting a Wildfire next week, and if flashing ROMs is done this way, it won't be such a difficult thing to do.
Just a question: Is Wildfire's Bootloader locked or unlocked?
Thank you.

Thank you and welcome we are all newbies at least once in our lives .. Ok now i did not get your question's intention very well but you can access your bootloader i.e you can go to bootloader mode of your phone but you can not flash unsigned ROMs ie custom roms or original roms from another region.. That will be done once the phone is rooted.. Many people including me (though i am not very good at it still i am trying ) are working towards it.. we hope to get it soon then a lot of developments and hacks can be done for this device..

Sorry if I wasn't very exact in my words. I meant exactly what you answered:
If you are able to Flash whatever ROM you want, like Desire/Nexus One users do, but Milestone (for example) users cannot, even though their smartphone is rooted, the Bootloader is Locked.
So from what I understand, when Wildfire gets finally rooted we will be able to Flash whatever unsigned ROM we want.
Keep up the good work and hope you root the phone soon!
Thank you Warrior for this write-up!
I've got some experience in flashing ROMs on a WinMO Phone but a total n00b with Android Phones...
Small question for you if you don't mind...
When looking at the 'What is your firmware' post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722988), I notice I have exactly the same firmware than the Original Poster although he is from Germany and I'm from Belgium. Others with the same firmware were from Denmark and France.

On my Phone, I can choose between Dutch, French and English as language for the operating system. I guess our German friend will have a German language option on his Phone and the Danish guy will probably have yet another option (Danish). Are all these different languages contained in the ROM itself??
Can we all use the same ROM file from Shipped-ROMs.com?
The only ROM on shipped-ROMs that completely corresponds to the version numbers I see on my phone is this one:
RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.14.405.2_R_Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31_release_130814_signed.exe

How would I recover the Dutch and French language options if I would ever need to install this WWE ROM??
Thanks for any clarification!
Sylvain
I'm asking the same question as @Sylle.
I have the same firmware, software, etc. numbers as he does. I've bought my Wildfire from Vodafone Romania (also locked on this network - this is the reason I want to change the ROM, until a rooting method is discovered) and it has the locale ROM (I'm guessing Central - Eastern Europe or something...it also has Polish, Czech and so on).
I'm goind to put the WWE ROM (RUU_Buzz_HTC_WWE_1.14.405.2_R_Radio_13.45.55.24_3. 35.15.31_release_130814_signed.exe) but i would like to know if there's any way to extract the current ROM? Or to make a backup of it, in case I ever need it later..
Many thanks for this topic; definitely going on my "subscribed to" list.
I am a n00b to ROM flashing, but not to *nix systems; anxiously awaiting root, at which point this info is going to come in handy.
I just wondered whether anybody knows if HTCFlasher (the Linux Flash software) works with the Wildfire?

Hey dude all you answers one by one :: First things first i am myself new to android flashing but i was pretty good on windows devices not just flashing but a lot of other stuff too..
ALL ANSWERS ARE TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE EVERYONE SHOULD FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME IN CASE I AM WRONG::
About language packs inside the rom ::
There are no extra language packs inside ROM other than what you can see.. what i mean is there is no hidden language pack that can be somehow hacked and enabled.
THIS NEXT REPLY IS FOR SYLVIAN AND PHUNCTIONIST

I see that you have found a ROM that corresponds to your ROM..so you can very well go ahead and flash it but to get back to your Original ROM you have to wait till the ROM you Presently have is posted somewhere ..or rooting is done..hence many options will be open to us..
ALSO UR ROM CANT BE BACKED UP AS OF NOW but once rooting is done you can back it up using NANDROID..
I can not try Rooting this as i gifted this phone to my younger BRO and i just have 3 more days to play with it.. i recently have bought HD2 and left my JOB for my Furthur studies so can not spend like i used to earlier .. i am saying this coz it makes me sad as other DEV's are neglecting wildfire for other high end devices and i am not able to help much still i am trying my best..
A quick request: would it be possible to write a similar n00b guide for those of us on Linux (perhaps Ubuntu specific)?

Hey would love to do that i already have UBUNTU 10.04 on my laptop but never bothered trying flashing on it .. I think since Android is Linux too so it should be easier to root and flash on Linux OS in this case Ubuntu...
BTW i remember something about HTC Flasher..Even more info and discusssion HERE so if you like you can do a bit of your own research too..also there is a thread for Rooting Aria on Ubuntu butfor this to be done on Wildfire we need unrevoked to work on our Wildfire first .. sorry mate this month is my Exam so i am devoting a little less time here in forums..

Hi, thanks for the reply (and good luck with your exams!)
One of the things about being new to this scene (I've quite a lot of programming experience) is the lack of a centralized source for information on existing devices. Getting your head around the terminology can be tough. Furthermore, while there are device specific roots, they rarely give insight into the technical process that is going on behind the scenes. I'd really like to gain some insight into the methods people go through when developing a rooting technique.
For instance, say a kernel level exploit is acquired and you obtained a root shell; what is the process for installing the su binary? (what changes are necessary and, because it's a ROM, where would the binary live?)
A lower level resource that started from scratch explaining the boot process, file structure, signing and verification procedure would be ideal, but I haven't yet found one.
(P.S. not necessarily requesting this, just voicing that this seems to be an area that is uncatered for)
Thanks again for the guide.

Hello Phunctionist!
I've been reading a bit more about the subject and I would like you to check something out so that I can confirm my suspicion...
You can change/add more locale (which determines the language of your Android OS) by installing the application 'localeswitch'.
However this doesn't add text input prediction for that language. I have the impression this is included in your keyboard software (Input Method extension - IME) on an android phone.
As we both have the same firmware, i'm wondering if we have the same input settings available for the keyboard as I also have options for Polish and Czech.
Amongst others does your keyboard for example allows you text prediction for
- Dutch (Nederlands): mine does
- French (français): mine does
- Croatian (Hrvatski): Mine does NOT
Hope your answers will bring me some clarification...
Thanks in advance!
Sylvain

Do enlighten us too as and when you get clarification .. coz none of my friends are using this phone so i am not able to get this thing cleared..
MANY A THANKS....
What is the simfree spanish rom?
Anyone know what rom should I use for a SimFree Spanish HTC Wildfire
I need another ROM for my Wildfire because it has Chinese language options that I think they are Hongkong and Taiwan. I downloaded this file
RUU_Buzz_HTC_FRA_Bouygues_1.23.483.2_Radio_13.45.55.24_3.35.15.31_release_140524_signed.exe
and tried flashing this ROM many time but got some errors. At first it was very hard for my phone to connect PC, when it's done the Updater told me the ROM is invalid for my phone.. So which ROM I must download and do I need to hack root my phone?

ROMs are locked to locations.
Asia has their own rom so you must download the Asia rom.
Not sure if it will fix your problem.
