not really sure how much battery life you are looking for, as the device gets 1 day+ stock, and still gets that rooted/debloated. performance does increase though when debloating.
one last benefit is that rooted folks are now on JB 4.2.2 (fully working too!) - not sure when that will be pushed by the carriers.
otherwise, the customization is the key.
I rooted my M long before I decided to put pacman rom on. I didn't really notice any difference in battery life. Biggest reason for me was so that I could use titanium backup to backup my apps. If you do decide to remove the bloat, make sure you do a nandroid backup for when the official upgrade comes out.

there are some TWRP flashable ROMs that take you back to stock.
Rooting alone will not allow you to get to 4.2.2. That's a benefit of unlocking the bootloader.

yeah not worried about the 4.2.2 just making sure the tool will root/allow me to revert to stock if need be, and not trip the fuse, that's only on the boot loader correct?

just use safe strap so u dont have to unlock your bootloader and dont touch the stock slot, then u can just uninstall safe strap and un root when u want to return to stock.

yeah but you won't get any up to date ROMs using safe strap as its been all but abandoned now that the bootloader has been unlocked. I rooted and stayed stock for the longest (until the bootloader unlock exploit) and was perfectly happy. All I wanted was to use root apps anyway but now that the bootloader is unlocked I have a proper nand back up of the stock rom and can flash and try at will. the space requirements for safe strap killed the appeal of that for me, especially with the inability to move apps to sd.

Lol no problem, I'm sure as the year passes I will consider unlocking. This phone is such a solid upgrade from what I have had in the past, I'm not too concerned about it. The root was simple, and freezing the useless apps was good enough for my current needs. Thanks for the information though.

I used fast boot to patch the boot logo to get rid of the nag screen. There's a post in the Dev section that runs through the steps.
That way, most customer reps can't tell the difference if you have a warranty issue.
Of course, iirc, you can run an RSD flash to return to a locked bootloader, too, should you need to take care of a warranty issue, too.
If I'm wrong on that, feel free to correct me, everyone

Oh ****. They're QFuses, so unlocking is permanent. You're right.
Anyway, RSD will rewrite the recovery partition back to stock, so only people who know of the fast boot screen can find out. If they even remember to check it.
That means that people who get my devices once they've been refurbished (my phones like to overheat, no matter what model) have the bootloader unlocked already. Sweet.

I unlocked my bootloader at one time. I then and to revert to stock GB. Now when I boot up i no longer have the "unlocked" show up on the screen. I somehow, lost my recovery so I am trying to load the CWM variant and I'm running into issues.
I just want to clarify that since I unlocked it at one point, it is and will always be unlocked, correct? I thought I had read that you can not revert to a locked state.

It is unlocked, but you will need to flash an unlocked ROM or reunlock it to avoid the problems you are having. I had the same thing happen to me before. Even though it is unlocked, the phone doesn't recognize it because of the ROM.

Thank you. I am trying to reunlock it but I keep getting "oem unlock is not implemented". Can't flash an unlocked rom because I don't have recovery and thats the only way I have done it in the past.

Yes I did.
I ended up finding the unlocker sbf files from the pudding thread. Flashed that and its all good. I am rocking alien for now.

I wasn't referring to any thread in particular but there are several threads that suggest the use of SBFs should be stopped as they are often unpredictable.
You wouldn't know anything about that though because you didn't need to come in the forum to ask for help after you SBF'd your phone and it went bad, hm? Thought not.
Next time read the warnings. The disappearance of "UNLOCKED" is well documented.

He wasnt the nicest about it, but dont use sbf anymore. You are risking HARD bricking your phone. Its always best to fastboot any kind of flash, especially radios, but you should be fine using a recovery to flash any compatible rom. Dont come asking what how do i unbrick my phone if you keep using sbf files.

Ok. So I should explain, I had to go the sbf route last time because I was having severe issues with the phone app fcing. I tried every possible other option and looked into any other way. Going the stock gb sbf was my last resort. That was several weeks ago. I just now decided to try another rom which is where I was having issues. So, unless you know the whole story........... I think proper etiquette is if you don't have anything constructive to say the stfu.

Here's the deal-E-O. Once you unlock and yer OTA updated to gingerbread, the only safe *and I say that with respect to the fact that it could still lead to something bad * .sbf to flash is the stock Gingerbread 2.3.4 . It may not be safe for EVERYONE, maybe it's a case by case basis, but I know for me I can flash that and it reverts me to stock with no unlock appearing at startup anymore. Also, the 1.97 radio .sbf seems fine to flash , atleast on my phone. Again, I'm not saying you SHOULD. Just adding information. Good luck all.

So if i was running blue cronic and having FC issues and wanted to revert back to stock as possible and used this "1FF-olympus-user-2.3.4-4.5.91-110625-release-keys-signed-ATT-US-GAS_NA_OLPSGBATTSPE_P011.sbf" through RSD lite. Have I screwed myself up? My phone is working just fine right now it just no longer says unlocked at boot up and I obviously dont have root access any longer.
I was about to flash this "ATT-2.3.4_Pudding_preroot.sbf" through RSD lite but I came across this thread doing a "search" lol

lol. i know what you mean. and i know it can be frustrating. it's just a shame that the play is so much more complicated than the x10 that i was previously on. it was all flashtool and update.zip stuff. practically unbrickable!! loved it. fastboot and adb complicate things, and i feel that some of the tutorials can be a little confusing to total noobs. so we need to be accomodating to their lack of knowledge (i hardly know anything, so i'm still quite noobish), but also, people need to accept their own actions and consequences. not sure what i'm getting at now, but things need to be simpler for people who want to start out
Actually the way of installation is exactly the same for any custom ROM in this phone.
1) unlock your bootloader, either for free if you bought a factory unlocked phone or for some cash sending Alejandrissimo a PM, which you have to use if your phone is branded and/or Sim locked. You only need to do this step once.
2) install a custom kernel. There are two: DoomLord's kernel and the Cyanogen Mod kernel. The latter allows you only to install CM7. Doom's allows you to install the others.
3) Enter in Clockwork Mod recovery and install the ROM you prefer as long as your kernel of choice supports it.
As to which ROM you should pick, I use CM7 because it's stable and fast. Visit those threads and see for yourself which is the one you like best.
my personal favorite (until cm7 became more usable, and also because i like dooms kernel) was zerojay's aptly named zerorom. it's a very clean and fast sony based rom full of optimizations and tweaks. i'm currently trying out the FXP028 release of cm7 to see if it's more to my liking than it was in previous releases.
Unfortunately locked to Rogers. Is there a free way of unlocking the bootloader and how?
Again I'm currently running 2.3.3 nonrooted. Had it rooted on 2. 3. 2. but ofcourse lost it with update.

Bump, has anyone been able to get Cyanogen mod onto the Rogers r800a? This locked boot loader is really causing me grief. Have the phone rooted, cwr is installed as well as busy Box. Getting closer, but still no cigar.

You can flash CM7, but i doubt it will boot with stock kernel.

You won't brick it, if kernel is incompatible device with either not boot, or bootloop, flahing stock rom with flashtool will fix it though.

Hi all,
I pre ordered my 16gb nexus 7 last week.
And I am thinking I will root it as soon as it arrives, but I have the following worries/questions:
If I root and unlock the bootloader, will I still get ota updates?
If I root and unlock the bootloader, is it possible to re-root it and re-lock the bootloader for warranty purposes?
Is the a large chance of bricking it by rooting it? Or is it quite safe now?
Is the any real reason why I shouldn't root it?
Sorry for all these questions, but I am currently using a rooted galaxy s2, and that comes with the bootloader pre-unlocked, so I am not familiar with locked bootloader lol

Yes you will be still able to get OTA updates, though you may will lose root after an OTA. It's only when you begin flashing alternate recoveries, kernels, ROMs etc. will you lose the ability to receive OTAs.
I'm not sure what you mean by re-root again (maybe you mean unroot??). But from the Nexus trend, you will be able to relock the bootloader after unlocking it (though I don't see a point unless you're about to return it). Regarding the unroot thing, all you have to do is just reflash the stock ROM or just remove the su binary and the su management application (SuperSU or Superuser).
It's relatively safe to say that you can root it without bricking your tablet. These days, it's pretty hard to actually brick your device unless you do something absolutely moronic i.e. flash the wrong bootloader.
Well, to answer your question, do you need root? If you don't need it nor do you understand what its purpose is, don't. Some uses include being able to access /system/ to maybe delete bloatware (there shouldn't be any on a Nexus device), some apps may get further functionality e.g. some apps might intentionally auto-turn on your GPS when you've lost your phone etc.
Clockwork recovery is totally separate to root. A recovery is used to flash things e.g. root, ROMs, kernels etc. When CWR is released for the Nexus 7, all you have to do is run "fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery>.img" (well that's what I'd run since I'm using Linux).

Ahh righteo, a locked bootloader just means you can't flash anything. And yes, you are correct, if you flash any recovery that isn't stock and matches with the build of Android, you will lose the ability to receive OTAs.

Hi all! I just received an update message from AT&T to update the software of my phone. I am one of those people who is really paranoid and won't update unless I know it'll be beneficial and won't affect anything else at all. I am currently on version i337ucuamdl. I tried looking up the update and I'm not getting to much information. I don't even know what the version is on the update... Can anyone clarify or concur with me?

If you ever want to put a custom recovery and rom on your phone don't take it.
There is plenty of information about the update in the "General" section if you are serious about learning what it is.

Here's a search you use to see a lot of things about the MF3. I would recommend staying away from it, I had many problems with it myself with it.
So it turns out this post was made irrelevant because last night when I was asleep my phone updated itself without my permission. Now I have seen ways to Odin down to AMDL, but I think I'm gonna hold off just a wee bit longer. Lemme tell you though.. I'm pretty upset about the fact I didn't get the chance to approve or deny.

Just so you know, you can not Odin back to mdl. If you try you'll at best soft brick your phone. Worst case, damage it so it won't be functional.

You can root your phone, but you cannot change the ROM or the recovery anymore.

People should be forced to read the "Beginner's Info Thread", which is stickied in the General forums, at least once before they're allowed to read anything else, IMO.
Right at the top is the method to block OTA updates from happening:

You're not likely to get a replacement, at this point, that isn't already on MF3. Since the update has been out for over 6 weeks...chances have grown slim.
Personally, I'm planning on switching to the Note 3 in about a month...and this is actually a good situation for me as my non-MF3 S4 should fetch a bit of a premium on Ebay! You could go that route to get what you want I guess (sell yours on ebay and buy an MDL one).

So it turns out that there is a method to root, but not safely from what it sounds like. Now I'm determined to dig into exploiting Android. This will be a new thing for me. So any tips on how one does this will be very helpful and I will be very grateful.

You can root it safely and there is a safe way to unroot it too. What you need to be careful with is what you do to it when it is rooted. Because there is no way to odin a stock firmware if you mess something up your stuck with it. (It appears that best buy now has the ability to flash the stock mf3 firmware so you have a little more room for error).
With root, most people want to remove bloatware. If you do, use titanium backup and freeze the apps, don't delete them. That way if you get over zealous you can just unfreeze them.

The thing is I want to have a custom recovery and go to town with ROMs and mods. As for the Best Buy thing, I am gonna have to check that out.

Lmao no I tried to avoid the update and I woke up one morning with the update done all on its own. Kinda pissed me off really. But that aside again because I do have the update I can't have a custom recovery. That's what's bugging me.

Hey Guys,
So I have my Razr M rooted with an unlocked bootloader and I'm running CM 10.1 stable. My headphone jack is messed up due to some hardware issues so VZW is sending me a warranty replacement. As of right now I still have the warning message that pops up about my bootloader being unlocked...if I flash a new bootloader image, this should take care of the message so that if Verizon turns on my phone that it doesn't look like I've unlocked it correct?

Well if you flash the boot logo that will remove the bootloader unlocked image yes... But your still going to be on cm not to mention the custom recovery.... Then you have the built in root checker and it saying that its unlocked in the fast boot menu.... Then your going to get a device that cannot be unlocked maybe even unrootable... I would have replaced it myself rather then risk the up to $500 fee for sending back that device (if they look into it) and having a device that is not unlockable or rootable.... Normally yes the just inspect it for physically damage and toss it in a bin for later repair but I just always have bad luck with this kind of thing so I would have spent 6$ on a head phone jack and put it in....

I've never repaired anything like that and from what I can tell it involves soldering which I have never done and don't own a soldering iron or anything. I'm okay with not having an unlocked bootloader as I figured it was a possibility when I bought the phone in the first place. I just want root mainly to get rid of bloat apps and have AdAway. Those are really the only things I use root for and I don't use a lot of the features that are in some of the custom roms. Especially since I know Kit-Kat is coming to the Razr M now it's not that much of a deal.
Is there a way to flash the stock image and relock the bootloader?
Use Matts utility to flash stock... Then update... There is no way to lock the boot loader... And no soldering needed it's a pressure connect

So I got my new RAZR M today and it's still running 98.16.3.
I'm having trouble finding which update fixes the exploit to lock the bootloader. Is that 98.18.78? It's not imperative that I unlock the bootloader but I don't want to update my phone if it's going to fix the exploit in case I feel like unlocking it in the future.
EDIT: Looks like the build is from May 29th 2013 which would seem like it can be unlocked since the update that broke the exploit was in July correct?

No you can not unlock the boot loader on that device.. You can root it tho with motochopper 1.3...if you update it you won't be able to root it yet...

Darn. Not a huge issue to me now but who knows down the line. I was more worried about getting stuck on Jelly Bean which is why I rooted/unlocked early but now that I know we're getting Kit Kat I don't care as much. Rooting is really the issue for me but the current OTA can still be rooted correct?

The neweset OTA can't be rooted.

The version your on now can be with motochopper 1.3 ... If you update it no you cannot...

Okay so I rooted my phone but now it's saying that SU Binary is not installed. Everywhere I go everyone's just like oh install this .zip from recovery which obviously isn't possible for me. How can I install the SU binary?
