[Q] SD card unmount during sleep / Media Scanner battery drain - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys,
I'm using GT-I9500 with 32 GB Micros SD Card (Sandisk Ultra HC) in in the past, it happened maybe once or twice I received the notification stating: "SD Card was removed unexpectedly". Of course - I did not remove it from the phone but still notification popped up and card was "gone" (phone could not see it). Everything returned back to normal after reboot.
This problem occurred maybe once a three weeks and it wasn't a big deal.
Situation has changed with firmware update i9500XXUBMEA (stock, no root). Since then, my card gets unmounted 10 times a day - or more. It happens most often when I put my phone away and when I wake it up - I get the message about "Unexpected removal" or "SD card is being prepared" (like it was just mounted).
This second message is now even a bigger issue because it looks like - when phone is asleep, SD card gets unmounted and mounted back many times ! This causes a HUGE battery drain due to MediaScanner service constantly indexing this card upon remounting. It goes to the point where 60% of my battery is gone in 1,5-2h.
I tried this SD card in my Blackberry - no problem. I tried in my wife's phone - no problem. Only problem occurs in my S4.
If i take out the card - MediaScanner drain does not occur anymore.
Any ideas? Any help?

Same issue on my S4.
I also have 32 GB Micros SD Card. I was thinking to get sdcard replaced under warranty.
But it appears, sdcard is working fine on other phones.

Same problem here.
No solution?

Sandisk admits to faults with SD cards and that they have implemented fix in new cards.

HD Mini looses Storage Card during tomtom

Hello, since a few months, my Tomtom 7.916 crashes regularly. It has 3 appearences:
1) complete freeze, need to remove battery
2) distorted screen
3) crashing program: gives message that files from storage card cannot be read.
In case of 2) and 3), my HD mini seems not able to find the Storage Card anymore: both in settings and in explorer. After a soft reset, the card is back again. During sommer Holiday, I did not have any issue at all. The only thing I remember from that time is that at some stage, the storage card was known as storage card2, which was also quite annoying though, but that happened only once or twice: my issue now happens everytime I use Tomtom, sometimes once every hour, sometimes once every minute.
Any ideas are welcome.
i have faced the same issue i lost all my data and apps that was stored on my memory card , it happened after i was using the the phone while being plugged to the pc and i restated my phone cuz it was stuck (still plugged ) after i switched on back the phone to my surprise i cudnt read my installed apps it says either the app is removed or relocated but then when i went to the explorer file to take a look at my storage card i found it empty !!!!!! i lost all the data there
i have a 8 GB memory card so im guessing maybe the issue is from the card itself or that its from china!! i have no clue yet, up to now its working fine .
ok, I must say in my case, I never lost any data from the storage card. But indeed, it cold still be the cause of the problems. Are there any ways to reformat the SD card in order to obtain more reliabile performance? What did you do with it when you lost all the data?
Did another check:
when Tomtom is running, and I plug in the USB cable and choose the diskdrive option, I get exactly the same failure signature 1) 2) or 3) as listed above. So maybe, my HD mini sometimes "thinks" a data cable is connected iso just the charger. I know there has been an issue in the beginning with the HD mini not recognising when a charging cable was connected.
Any thought on this? Do I talk nonsense?
Try TTN7.917.9186_vga_black_cuckoo_NOBT instead of 916, had the same issues with 916 before!

Sorry, made a mistake in my first post: this 7.917.9186 is exactly the one I am already running.
Had the same issue with my storage card. Solved by reinstalling the same software again (7.916)
Does it only happen with tom tom? I haven't used tom tom today, but my SD card suddenly is gone ! This is the second time in a few months...and it really annoys me, it really looks like a bug in WM. Thankfully this time, after a reboot it works again....
I had similar effects also without Tomtom, but then the storage card became "storage card 2". And after a reboot it became "storage card" again. But with Tomtom I completely loose the card, and it comes back after reboot. So a bit different, but your case could have the same reason. I will try a reinstall.

DVP owners - check if your SD card is working properly. May explain lockups.

If you have a Dell Venue Pro, please try the Customer Interface Test (CIT) and see if your SD card passes or fails the test. You can access the test by dialing ##634# which will bring up the diagnostic menu. I'm trying to see if there's a correlation between lockups and SD card failures.
If you run the test, post the results including:
Test result - pass or fail and any status code
SD capacity - 8 or 16GB
Whether or not you have frequent lockups that require a battery pull (not "normal" app crashes)
I'll go first
Pass

Fail - Code 102

* note: I used to have Marketplace problems, but it has been fine since I did a hard reset. I still get WiFi-related freezes where the "people" tile fills up with nine photos, as reported elsewhere on this site.
For those reporting Marketplace crashes, is the phone actually locking up and requiring a battery pull? The Marketplace app crashes a lot in WP7 generally on all the phones I've tried (HD7, Focus, DVP), but I can always get back to the home screen after a few seconds of pressing the home button.

I've only had to pull the battery once, the rest were fine after holding the power button for 3 or so seconds. Hitting it again brought up the lockscreen like normal.
As for the other phones, my girlfriend has had the HD7 since launch day and she'd not had a single problem with lockups. It's anecdotal, but this is completely a device-specific error.
SD Insert status: Inserted
SD card status: 103 (not OK)
SD card size: 15.193 GB
I am not sure how to decipher the results. I get to the above screen and the phone screen says "CIT: Please wait for 5 sec...". Nothing happens after that. Does this mean I have a bad SD card? For the people who passed the test, does the phone automatically take you to the next test?
I experience lockups when on WiFi and at random times. Not frequent lockups, but they're there. I have ordered a replacement.
SD Card Inserted Inserted
SD Card Status 110 (not OK)

Anytime I connect to Wifi and go to marketplace to download I have a guaranteed freeze that requires a battery pull. Even holding down power button for 15 secs has no effect.

My 8GB card passed the SD test (result was 0 OK) and the phone automatically went to the next one.
1. Pass
2. 16GB
3. No lockups yet (haven't inserted SIM, but marketplace worked fine over wifi)
1. Test Results: All pass.
2. 16 GB
3. Only one crash in a week, maybe not even a crash.
Sad I have to return it because it won't wirelessly sync. I'll definitely be performing this test on the replacement.
This is weird and might just kill the whole SD card theory.
OK! I have the DVP 16GB. As I've stated before. It's a guaranteed crash everytime I have wifi on and try to download via marketplace.
Well! I put my DVP in airplane mode (essentially turning of cellular) and left wifi on. No freezes what so ever. I even reset my device a couple time just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.
Now this is not a solution just an observation as it renders the device useless if I have to turn off cellular to use wifi.

I just tried that (airplane + wifi enabled) and attempted to downloaded a large game from the marketplace (Glyder). I wasn't able to test your observation since the phone went to sleep after the screen time out. After that I couldn't wake it up. The button lights would turn on but the screen remained black. I had to do a battery pull.

SD card notification

I put in Samsung SD card yesterday and this stupid notification keeps coming back even after trying disabling notifications. Anyone know how to get rid of this
Swipe to dismiss it. But once you restart your phone, it will come back. It's annoying for sure.
I think Samsung will release an update to fix this bug. I have the same problem too, you're not alone.
you may want to try powering off, eject sim tray, make sure microsd card is positioned properly in tray, carefully reinsert.
after that, hopefully the notification only occurs on boot. I did that yesterday, so far so good. My music app seemed be be having trouble finding music on my sd, which is why i tried this.
I was having the same problem with the sd-card notification so I copied everything and then formatted it in the phone then placed my back ups back in and haven't had the problem since try that it worked for me
Has anyone been able to move apps to SD as reported by Droid-Life? I cannot for the life of me figure out how.

Go to Settings>Applications> Applications Manager> Select the App you want to move> Storage> Change, and select "SD Card"

PS you cannot do that on preinstalled apps.
Hey guys, just wanted to post a solution to the problem. All of you with this phone, that use an external SD card, are getting an annoying notification that says, "SD card For transferring photos and media," and it doesnt seem to go away. If this message appears over and over again in your status bar, the only known way to get rid of it was to previously just keep "clearing" it out or remove the SD card completely.
If you are receiving a notification "SD card For transferring photos and media" on your Samsung Galaxy S7 and you cannot get the notification to go away, please try to do the following:
1. BACKUP your sd card - plug your phone into your computer and copy off the contents of the SD card
2. On the phone, navigate to: Settings >> Memory >> SD Card
3. In the submenu, choose FORMAT
All of the data on the memory card will be formatted to the correct file system and the memory card will be reconnected to the phone for proper use. The message, "SD card For transferring photos and media" should no longer appear.
Hopefully this helped you out! Thanks!
But didn't most of us formatted the cards already the first time we insert it into the phone, and still getting the notification? At least I did. Do I need to format again?

That doesn't work. I did that a few days ago and while the notifications went away for an entire two days, they came back and never left until I just removed the SD card completely. I even tried taping the SD card in the tray.
Just another bug filled phone from Samsung.

Put my PNY 128gb back in after the update to test. So far so good, but it's only been an hour....
Edit1: Made it through a full day without the sd unmounting. This used to happen every 20 minutes or so before the update. Fingers crossed.
Edit2: Update didn't help. Unmounted a few times today.

I figured they would go away when you change it to adoptable storage. Maybe these notifications are a bug Samsung created while trying to hide these SD card features such as adoptable storage from us.
Do you know if using adoptable storage lowers the read/write speeds?
There re two threads about the sd issue on the s7 edge forum and one in the s7 forum. Total of 8 people having problems. I checked several of the other carriers s7/s7 edge forums and not a single post that I could find.
I called T-Mo, and after messing with a tech guy for 10 minutes, they decided I should just get another phone. I was assured over and over again that it would not affect my BOGO submission, but the person who took my replacement order told me to make another submission after I get the replacement, which kind of makes me nervous. This phone if OK if it's free, but I wouldn't pay for it.

Does it only happen after a reboot? If so that's normal and there doesn't seem to be a way of supressing it.
If not then you may have an SD card problem. Some people have complained that the SD card keeps getting unmounted due to errors.

I'm getting it at random times, mostly when the phone is off. I even remounted the Samsung Evo+ 64G to make sure it's on correctly. It's happening and it's annoying.

The notification presents itself when the SD card mounts, which is why you receive it every time you reboot. If you see it during normal use then the card is being unmounted and remounted for some reason. This means there is an issue either with the card, the card slot or a system process crash.

I will reseat the card when I have a chance and let you guys know. I've been having a few weird issues with this phone though. I can't enable System UI options by holding the settings icon in the notification center... it just never spins, my battery drains very fast in use and this SD card thing.
I am also getting these annoying SD Card notifications. Mine happen every time I turn the phone off. The notification is there when I wake the phone back up.
The card is a SanDisk 64gb Extreme Pro.

I tried 3 different SD cards I had laying around and they'll all kept getting unmounted.
Here's how I fixed it: of course make sure than both the SD and the sim card are properly sitting on the tray , then SLOWLY insert the tray straight from all angles. When I say slowly it means between 8-15 seconds and NOT with a swift push!
There is a notification you can turn off so these stop. I believe its in the My Files app from samsung. turn off the notifications and it should go away.
( i may be wrong on the app, i had a bunch i turned down. finding running programs was not as easy to find as my old note)
Wonder if the Samsung Pro + card is the problem?
Was going to get the 200GB Sandisk for the same price but went for the Pro + as I thought it would be better.

I was having the same problem, then I remembered the "OK Google" notification from android wear watches.
Follow along here.
This was a notification that people could not get rid of, it just sat there every time they turned the watches on.
Then people realised that it started dissapearing on its own.
Then we realised that it was set to appear until you used it so much, sort of like a reminder that it was there and then it would disappear.
Finally people realised if you just woke the watch up and said ok google a few times it would go away for good.
Still with me?
If so you might know what I am saying already.
If you use the SD card for a while the notification will go away and not come back.
I took about 20 pictures with the camera set to store pictures on the SD card and it went away.
My wife took a 20 second video and hers went away.
TLDR, Use the SD card, the notification is just a reminder that it is there and available.

Note 4 random random reboots / reset

Hi,
Posting for some help.
I have just bought a 2nd hand galaxy note 4 off my friend here in New Zealand.
It is running marshmallow 6.0.1 and i noticed when i put my old micro sd 32gb card in i got a few instances where the phone would randomly turn itself off and restart.
This stopped having regularly after I got the phone all setup, but then recently I noticed occasionally it will kinda of reset itself but not shutdown but it will bring up the option on the notification bar memory card to either explore or unmont and also i have to put my backup password into unlock the phone where normally i just used fingerprint scanner.
Im getting a new memory card shortly and read somewhere its a good idea to use the built in format option to format the new card when I put it in.
It seems to be a widely reported issue but it doesnt happen very often.
Any suggestions.
Thanks.
