[Q] Google's ROM? [UPDATE: June 30th] - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys
So Google will be releasing their own version of the Galaxy S4 ("Clean" Version) pretty soon.
Will we be getting the chance to install this ROM over our current phones? (i9505 + i9500)
Or is it just for people who bought this specific phone?
Thank you,
Omga4000

Looks like we will be getting this clean ROM after all!! Yay!!

Most likely yes. Devs should be able to port it over. However it looks like many of the sensors won't work. Ie infrared

I think the i9500 will be left out.

Why will he be left out?
Is the Galaxy S4 Google Edition based on rhe snapdragon SoC?

If somehow, CM10.1 arrived at i9500 variant then google AOSP may be come over 9500.

With regards to aosp roms, the i9500 is doomed, my friend. Doomed. Anyone compiling aosp for i9500 is wasting their time because exynos 5410 is even worse than 44xx.
So the joke's on you for not buying the qcomm version.

In what way is it my fault I live in Europe

Anyway - yesterday Samsung began releasing the open source code

I live in Europe as well but luckily they chose to market the LTE variant here. You could have imported an i9505, though.
Look, what they release on arndale has nothing to do with what they have in their phones. If I'm wrong on that, I'd request an insight from @Entropy512 because he knows a lot about this stuff.

I would like a better insight as well.

Remember, this is a stock Android UI - so far, nothing more (such as AOSP support) has been announced, and I suspect it's unlikely. So it actually will be of zero benefit for AOSP bringups like CM.
As far as porting it just like porting a TW firmware between Qcom devices? Maybe, I don't know how successful people have been in doing such a thing. (e.g. if they've got it as automated as I did with Hellraiser on the I777).
Since I9500 is Exynos, the Google Edition is of zero use for that device.
As I said long ago when the Google Edition was first announced:
If it's not AOSP supported, it basically means nothing
If it's AOSP supported and qcom, it's nice but not a huge benefit since CAF is already quite good
If it's AOSP supported and Exynos, that's a game changer and would be what would cause me to consider Samsung again. But we know for certain it's not Exynos, and it's highly unlikely it'll be AOSP supported - Samsung's underlying base software is too Samsunged (hacked up) in the non-GE GS4s for them to have AOSP support any time soon. The Google Edition is just covering up their crappy underlying software with a less sucky UI as far as I can tell. We'll know for sure when the device is released.

They won't be able to include Samsung drivers into the device. If you use a non stock rom now watch on won't work because it doesn't know where to find the infrared.
I hope that Google does it right and gets the sensors to work but at this point it doesn't seem like they will. Maybe Samsung will release the drivers someday

Seriously starting to doubt it.
I'm actually thinking of selling my device and getting the snapdragon variant.
I heard there's going to be a version with the snapdragon 800 + LTE
so I might wait for that and replace my phone.
So sad

News what we all were waiting for :) :) S2 is getting 4.2.2

http://www.gsmarena.com/galaxy_s_ii...roid_50_others_get_stuck_at_422-news-5720.php
Samsung has proudly announced that our beloved S2 will ends at 4.2.2 not at 4.2.1.
So we all have to wait and see what goodies we will be getting in 4.2.2 :fingers-crossed:

hope it gets release soon and that we australians get it. we still don't have the 4.1.2 update
We will end at 4.2.2 but higher galaxy phone got an update of android 5.0
how sad
I don't see why we wouldn't get 5.0. S2 has the same RAM as the S3 and that's getting it, so surely it's capable.

Samsung is saying that Android 5.0 will need higher resolution screens. That's why they are dropping support for various devices, even for Galaxy Grand Duos which just released. It is probably a big fat lie so we can probably expect CM to work on it.

I don't really care about 4.2, to be honest. Well, don't get me wrong, it's awesome that Samsung updates the S2 to 4.2.2, but that update isn't that interesting from what I've heard.

I can't see anything interesting going from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. Not bothered at all.
Great news indeed. Lets now wait for official announcement from Samsung themselves.
the guys interested if they want to read the article, here is

i think its good news
I think 4.2.2 is no more needed for GS2…4.1.2 had enough function for us…maybe 4.2.2's only adv is battery saving…
However, sam is good enough for an old model to give so much updates…
sorry for my poor English…
I love how the masochists in this thread announce how they DON'T want or need 4.2.2. The attitudes of some people ...
Going from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2 will offer significant upgrades. Not least of all the lock screen widgets and hence the ability to use Dashclock.

No official Android 5.0 for S3mini

Hello
According to Sammobile we dont get 5.0 android update - at least no official update. S3 mini is recently new Samsung phone and having least no 1+ version upgrade is no fair, if i remember there some +1 version promise for all samsung phones. Im not going ever buy again any Samsung device if this become true. 4.2.2 is minor upgrade and dont count, not for me. What do you all think ?

It looks like, but this phone is still one of lastest released phones from samsung. I called samsung to ask them and they dont confirm this list and says there is no official information about future firmware upgrade for S3 mini. I still have hope !
Thats a shame if its true...I thought I was safe buying this phone thinking we would get the next generation Android OS. Hmm I hope its not true. You really have to buy high end to be guaranteed anything. Im amazed to see the S2 on our list. That phone seems pretty old now.

its not fair, considering that the SGS3 and the SGS3Mini both have the same Cortex A9 Processors and Mali400 GPU. If you'd look at it, the donwside should be on the SGS3, since it needs to cope up with a huge screen resolution as compared to the SGS3Mini. Bigger resolution needs bigger RAM since the devices both have the same GPU,. Can the bigger RAM needed by the S3 be handled only in a 1GB of RAM as compared to the smaller resolution, less RAM intensive S3Mini with the same 1GB RAM..?
S3 and S3mini have diffrent cpus with difrent clocks, even the gpu is diffrent. Look it up on gsm arena.

is not official, and updating one time is a bad strategy from samsung, i think they will update our device to 5.0 and leave it there
That's just a preliminary list. Give them time to work something out.

The only difference is the chipset, clockspeed and the number of cores. But both have the same type of processors intended for the same instruction set and the same GPU. If you'd take a look at Quadrant's benchmark at system information, you'll see that they both have the same Mali-400 MP GPU. See?
The proccesor is allready a big diffrence. And s3mini has mali400 vs mali400mp (s3), i'm not sure it's the same chipset.

If somebody steps up to develop, which might never happen. Since the veterans swear not to touch any Exynos device ever again.
S3 has lots of roms mainly bec. Steve from cm was working on it before and suddenly gave up, yeah that's right he gave up bec. of Exynos. The rest was history.
If you bought an exynos device and was hoping for AOSP support, you're gonna have a bad time

Indeed ... also 4.3 does have some interesting features but nothing major from my perspective ... also i think they won't separate the editions for those major updates and they'll roll out them for all s4 together ... but that's only an assumption ... and i would be shocked if any s4 doesn't get 5.0 KLP update at all ...

Not really fair to be honest. Every Samsung device I've had got at least 1 major update within a few months of its release. It's the the older devices, ie note 2, s3 that will wait ages or not get it. The S4 + Note 3 will get kit kat by January if history repeats. Also in the past Samsung have denied updates to older devices due to hardware limits, Google are claiming kit kat can run happy on 512mb Ram so who knows, maybe old devices might just get a break (pun intended, sorry )

This.
As always, samsung is super slow with updates, so don't bother in at least 6 or 7 months, and even with that, the note line is never the first one, so probably S4 and S5 will get 4.4 2 or 3 months before the note.
Saw someone quote a samsung rep tweet about them being more concerned about getting most of the older devices to 4.3 first. And about note 3 having to wait at least 2 months for 4.4

on other news, HTC pledges to get 4.4 out to its HTC One in 90 days, Google Play Edition, in 15 days...
would be nice if Samsung could make and keep to a similar commitment
This is one thing, coming from iOS which is absolutely mind blowing how Samsung doesn't give a rats ass about being up to date. Why own a Android device that runs old software 1 month after buying it and not be allowed to update it.

i dont think its going to be within a month but i ve had all the notes so far. i717 original galaxy note shipped with gingerbread(2.3)
got updated to ice cream sandwhich 4.0.4( i believe) and than got updated to jellybean 4.1.2
note 2 was ics→4.1→4.3 coming in next month
the updates come but they are slow......But we do have a secret weapon... XDA woot woot!
I wish it was faster but to be honest doesnt really matter to me since im just gong to mess with
They did sell a significantly larger amount of Note 3's in a much shorter period than previous Note devices. So who knows? We had 4.3 well before the flagship S4...
As for the N2 (and S3) still lagging behind, that's because they skipped 4.2.

To quote Engadget :
Update: There's still no official word on why this is the case, but sources close to the company have pointed the finger at a different hardware issue on the Galaxy Nexus: its Texas Instruments-built chipset. The company is out of the mobile business and as such isn't in a great position to give the support necessary for continuing OS upgrades -- presumably some of those 1,700 employees let go in the shift away from mobile could have helped. Now we'll have to see if the community can pick up where the corporations left off or if this is the end of the road for the Gnex and its other OMAP-based kin like last year's Kindle Fire HD, Nook HD and Droid Bionic.
Seeing as we're talking Samsung devices here, I think we should be ok

The note 2 actually came shipped with 4.1 jb.
I don't really know about the fuzz with updates. It's not like apple pushes em out on a monthly basis, only when needed. Same for Samsung, people should stop whining about fast updates, making them work etc takes a lot of time. If they release it early and there are a few bugs people will whine about that.
If the phone works and it does very smoothly here under 4.3 why do you instantly need an update?

Could someone (in theory) create a stock google 4.4 rom for our Note 3?
I know stuff like eye detection and the S-Pen and god knows what else wouldn't work..
AOSP roms won't be out for a while until Samsung gives the community the binary drivers.
Samsung are slow at doing, only in Oct did they release the binaries for S4 6 months after release.
In theory you can download 4.4 and cook your own rom but without drivers from Samsung it won't be stable or certain hardware will not work at all.
If you want the latest and greatest Andriod then you should have brought a Nexus phone.
