[Q] S4 Backup EVERYTHING Without screen... - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, well I managed to do it. Smashed my first screen. On a new phone too... I would have expected to smash it after a year or so but NOOOO I went and messed it up after a month or so...
Anyway, I want to pull a full backup off of my phone. NANDROID Backup is it ?
It still works fine, and I can see tiny tiny parts of the upper left of the screen. and connect through ADB. But none of the ADB remote controlling things I have found work with my mouse/KB.... If I could do that I would be satisfied...
And when I try and remove the pattern via ADB I get permission denied.... Ive spend the last few hours trying to figure out what to do here but im at a loss...
Anyone able to help me out ?
Also, Anyone able to tell me how much money im gonna loose replacing this screen ? ;___;
I can also boot into CWM, But I dont know what is what, like, I dont know whats selected because I cant make out the words... I want to do a full backup of everything to external SD card if possible.... photos of the screens of CWM would help XD
I dont remember what version I have installed sorry :c
But yes, PLEASE HELP ME!
Some day I may be able to help you in return, Until then I extend my deepest thanks to all who can help me even in the slightest...
Additional notes:
Screen is buggered, one of these things for the most of it, And the digitizer glass itself is cracked quite a bit on the upper left... :c
I seem to recall seeing CWM 6.0.3 or something along those lines...
I tried these:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587717
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800799
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420351
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800799&page=2
And a few on non XDA sites I shan't link due to possible rule violations
-CP

Ever find out?
Ever figure out CWM menu?
I'm in the same boat and waiting for the OTG USB HDMI out adapter to show up, hopefully I can get the mouse and HDMI going at the same time and Titanium Backup everything.
Good Luck!

Recovery problem ! Please Help!

Vista recovery from recovery partition stalls at 21%. Solutions? Thanks
Remove the SDHC.
There are many threads in this Young Forum already regarding this problem. Please use the search tool quoting 'Recovery'.
Aww pof, ya beat me to it!!
i did remove the sdhc, and searched the forum before any suggestions now?
If all else fails! Return it under warranty...You probably have a duff Hard Drive.
not quite a solution as I'm away and be home in a week but need my shift to work now
Sorry, I know what you are up against. That's why I gave the 16Gb backup thread.
You also have to remember, this Forum IS still young and we have not come across all solutions yet but a hardware problem can usually fox all of us.
what the hell all this proplem come from
i really start heat this device

Question is, why did you have to do a recovery? Seems to me the machine isnt so
old.
As Farsquidge said, the forum is still young as this device is not so old and also, it is
quiet pricey, so not so many people are able to contribute to this forum.
Solutions will be found and have been found already.
But I somewhat agree with you, some of the decisions HTC made about this device's features make me wonder.
It just stopped working, told me to repair vista from recovery cd becouse CI.dll file was corrupt or missing. So I started recovery from HDD. And 21% forever.

I had a similar problem, but I broke my recovery partition myself when trying to slipstream a Vista lite...even my backup didnt work.
I am currently waiting for my friend to upload a recovery partiton to my server.
I will publish the link, once it is up.
But it might take some time. So I suggest to return it to the vendor and claim warranty.
Dont give up on the shift yet. I have a good feeling that we will increase usability in
the future and add many more features...e.g. Liberate SnapVue...
It seems as if many of the problems people are facing are down to the Hard Disk Drive.
This could be due to a very portable unit not being handled very carefully or maybe not having sufficient motion protection on the drive.
I know iPod's that contain HDD's suffer greatly this way that's why apple prefer solid state.
Recommendation to everyone is try to wait until your device has fully shutdown or hibernated before you start to handle it like a pocket book. Normal motion is OK but its so small we tend to handle it like a mobile phone!

Backup w/ Broken Screen? (TWRP Installed)

Hey guys, I recently broke the LCD on my Note 3 running stock KitKat ( :crying: ) and realized I hadn't done a nandroid backup in quite some time...
I tried the obvious adb pull, but for some reason I couldn't even get into adb shell or see my device in the device list like I had previously.
I'm all out of ideas now...
Could somebody please throw some help my way?
Does your phone even boot up? Do you get sound, vibration, anything to indicate it's still working internally beside blank screen?
Are you going to try to fix it? buy new one? upgrade to Note 4? Me and my wife used to own GS3 and when she broke her screen, I swapped motherboard with mine to copy pictures mostly and some other stuff, but we werent going to fix it, since I decided to get her GS5.

I'm getting a replacement through the phone insurance. It does turn on and function perfectly normal, the screen just has a tiny, tiny fracture point with a crack spanning across the screen horizontally, rendering the bottom half unusable. The top half is functioning though.
I cannot unlock my phone or make a backup with the bottom half not working.
Try using a bluetooth mouse or wired mouse with otg cable

Could help, made for exactly your problem. If you manage to get it working download Nandroid Offline backup, which allows you to make a Nandroid backup from Android itself, rather than CWM/TWRP.
EDIT -- Just checked and it works an absolute treat. Providing you had USB Debugging enabled before your phone got broke, it should work fine. It even has the option to swipe to unlock or disable a pattern unlock if you had one enabled.

Thank you for the link - it looks like it would be a great solution, but unfortunately I cannot enable USB debugging with the code given :\. I may be out of luck
Well, if nothing else works and data on the phone is that important, then you need to convince the insurance company to send you new Note 3 first and swap the MB as I suggested to retrieve the data, then put everything back to original. I have not done this on Note 3, but GS3 was probably one of easier electronics repairs I've done, just follow one of many youtube videos, to make sure you don't break some wire, before disconnecting. Possibly a shop could do that for you.
Well, freakin sweet deal. After being on the phone with the insurance company and US Cellular for two and a half hours and having them tell me everybody was out of Note 3's and they would only give me $400 bucks for my old phone minus my $175 deductible, I received another call from management at the insurance company apologizing and letting me know that they'd offer me $725.
It just so happens the new Note 4 is $770, so thank the Lord I'm in a good spot!

[Q] Help retrieving data from cracked Note 3

Hello, Im pretty sure youve heard the story. Dropped my phone and cant see a thing due to the cracked screen. When I plug the phone into the computer, the computer recognizes it because I can hear the chime. But I cant unlock my phone to get all of the data off of the internal memory. Is there any software I can use that will act as a virtual monitor on my PC, like a developer kit or something of the sort? I looked in another thread and a guy recommended a OTG cable, but I dont think that would work in my case because I cant see ANYTHING on my phones screen. The repair guy at the shop said that the screen and LCD is damaged so....please? Any help or redirection to another thread would be greatly appreciated. I have all of my music and photos on there and I dont wanna send the phone back yet without trying every possible way to recover the data. PLEASE help. Thanks.

Screen doesn't work anymore! Please Help!

Hello there,
today, it just happened out of the blue, my pretty new S7 does only show up a blank grass green screen now! It can be turned off and on, touch works. I just can't see anything at all anymore. I really need a way to mirror the screen to the PC or something... USB debugging is not active :crying:. There are some apps installed, I need to use because I have to create the backup files in them!
What would be the easiest way to get access to this?
The phone is connected to my WiF if that helps.
Thank you so much!
I need help really urgently. (
Put it in download mode and reflash in odin

If you can aquire a mhl cable for your s7 you will be able to output the video output of the s7/edge to a tv/display. Just search mhl cable for s7 edge on amazon or ebay and you should be good to go.
Edit: just read the s7 and the s7 edge don't support mhl so you might be out of luck.
@Rydah805 I want to backup my data .... and I don't think that would help at all. The screen is pretty much done.
@amar95353 I read online that there is no more MHL support on the S7 anymore.

Your SOL on data. You can try SmartSwitch on PC but even then you'll need to approve the backup via the phone.

Original answer deleted. I'm a complete idiot. I should have checked but believe I was given incorrect information from my sprint sales person on location of reset. Sorry.
I turned off the phone many times.
Phone works fine, just the screen doesn't. I found a lot of forum posts for this problem it seems common...
I didn't root this phone.
Now, I finally know what's the hole for LMAO! What does happen if I poke it? Update: Hey, that hole is not used for resetting the phone. It's for noise reduction.
I don't think this will help on a broken screen anyway.
slaldrich said:
i assume you turned your phone completely off and on again (not just the screen).
If you did that, did you try a reset? There is a little hole on the top of your phone and in your box, you received a little tool. Poke the hole and hold it in until something happens (a few secs). This sort of reset is like pulling the battery. You should not lose any data in doing this.
If you created this problem by trying to root your phone unsuccessfully... Then you will probably need to odin new stock software.

please dont put anything in that hole. This is not a reset button............... ITS A MICROPHONE and that tool its design to open the sim card bay.
Don't worry, I wont do that.
I'm so stuck here... and also I need to send this phone to T-Mobile! Right now I 'm using an iPad as a phone replacement. lol
Just wish I could save this data...
Is your screen experiencing this?
http://i.imgur.com/iOmtR2T.jpg
If so, it's a defective screen.
I got mine replaced already since it was under 30 days replacement guarantee. You can read more about it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3359221
But the bad news is you won't be able to backup anything. I had to sacrifice a lot of stuff as well.
This is exactly what my screen does look like! And I did not only had problems with the screen, I wasn't able to get my carrier's settings automatically, I have problems with the charging, it won't display my phone number in the settings and also sometimes the camera app freezes. I installed the updates which didn't change anything. This new smartphone which doesn't even has a tiny scratch, never fall down is totally wrecked. Really disappointed about this "top high end" phone. I don't trust, that it will work after they "repeard it". I have it since release.
It's like really a huge amount of data... Of one app it is everything from 2 years (7GB)! There is no possibility to create a backup, you can just send the data to a new phone via WiFi that's all. If your phone breaks everything is lost.
I realized many app developers don't take enoughh care of backup solutions.
Yesterday the screen got back to life but just for a short moment
So it seems like there is no way to get back this data...
Can I get back my WhatsApp backup at least? I was able to create a backup before the screen died. When I plug in the phone to PC I can see "Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge" in my explorer an that's about it. When I click on it there is no content to show.
I just got an idea how to enable the god damn USB debugging!
Can someone share here how to connect the device as a mass storage to PC (by screenshots please)!
I was just thinking, I can work my way to the Developer Options by taking screenshots but I need to access the media for this!
When I connect the device to PC and then click on Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge it's empty... There most be done something before.
Thanks!
You guys can call me a ****ing genius! I managed to install Teamviewer by taking screenshots and look at them on the PC (I set up the device as mass storage blindly) so I knew what to do next. It was still tricky but possible.
I'm recovering my data now.
Thanks to the Google voice app I was able to type in "Teamviewer"
Thank you anyway!

Now I have permanently lost my previous data

It wasn't really easy dude... The most difficult was to make this damn thing work as a mass storage device. So I could finally have access to the data on the Windows Explorer.... I was just touching on the screen like a maniac!
But this is a way to do it guys. If you own a Galaxy S7 Edge I recommend to activate USB debugging and install Teamviewer quick support (Samsung version, there are different editions) just in case the screen breaks. lol I install Teamviewer on all my devices now...
Hey! The same thing just happened to my phone an hour ago. Green grassy screen. It's terrible!
Ok, so what were the steps you took in order to get to where you can turn on USB debugging and backup your phone?
Well, what happens when you connect your phone to your Computer (USB)? If nothing, then you need to check connect the device as camera or mass storage, blindly! Which is kinda tricky... You need to pull down your notification bar and then select the USB options thing and in this menu which pops up you need to select camera or mass storage... But once you get that done, you're good to go! You will be able to take screenshots and view them on your computer instantly. You don't really need to care about USB debugging, you can just get Teamviewer Quick Support (for Samsung) that is really important, the normal version won't work!

Thanks for the reply. It actually looks like my issue was much worse. My phone degraded pretty quickly, since I wrote my post. It got to a point that while I could type on my lockscreen, it wouldn't go past and enter the OS. I didn't even have a green screen anymore, the screen turned to an off black. At that point, I gave up and sent it in for repairs. I think the motherboard got fried.

Help needed unbricking old style nexus 2012 wifi

Hello, I have been given a nexus to try fix, Its one of the older style ones 7 inch i think with only front facing camera and wifi only, It seems to have an intermittent problem powering on, I've checked and rechecked all hardware so think now maybe its some software problem as the owner has tried to root the device unsuccessfully and i think flashed wrong ROM,
Is there anyway i can restore the device and possibly even root it for them at the same time without being able to boot into the device and see build version etc, I am able to get it to power on eventually but takes some playing about removing battery a few times till it decides to boot but once its on it stays on but cant access anything as it just keeps constantly throwin up the same error sayin "Unfortunately the process com.android.phone has stopped" and i can close them all fast enough to view anything in the tablet,
Any help here would be great, Im guessing i just need to flash the correct ROM plus whatever other files are needed the ODIN/USB way, Im just not sure what files to use for this device, Think its Grouper
Anyone any ideas how i can fix this?

just need someone to read over your post is all & give a response ... Sounds like an app/service is crashing, best thing to do is hook it up to a pc an play around with the Nexus Root Toolkit, if you can boot the N7 you can fix it with that program, just make sure your comfortable with that level of modifications, with that tool you can do just about anything with your N7 sorry but it doesn't sound as if you have much knowledge of the working of the N7, I only mention it an suggest you do a lot more research before fixing what is a simple fix in the grand scheme of things of what could be wrong.. Don't forget the make sure its got a decent charge before "flashing"... for the power on issue, just pull the back plate off an unplug the battery cable "carefully", and then pop it back in making sure its in even, flush an all the way.. good luck :good:
