XDA Tablet Z Development Competition - Xperia Tablet Z General

Everyone loves a good competition; there’s no denying it. Generally, we don’t just give away devices for the sake of giving them away. Sure it drives traffic, but that traffic usually ends up going away until the next giveaway. Wash. Rinse. Repeat. We would rather showcase the amazing work done by the developers on XDA and let that drive traffic than to try and drive traffic by giveaway. However, when given an opportunity to give away something that promotes development, we are all in. This is just such an example.
The Sony Xperia Tablet Z is the latest tablet out in the marketplace, and it’s one of the top ones right out of the gate. With a 10.1″ Full HD Reality Display, 1.5 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro, NFC, IR-blaster, 8.1 MP rear-facing and 2.2 MP front-facing HD cameras, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB storage in a water resistant and dustproof case coming in at 6.9 mm and under 500 grams, this tablet is powerful and beautiful.
XDA is pleased to announce that we have 10 of these tablets to give away, but not in the normal way. For this contest we’re going to do things a bit differently. See the Portal Article for more info!

[Q] What Are Our Options Now?

I tried the Atrix and HTC Inspire in-store, and while I absolutely want an upgrade, I'm not convinced either is good enough, and am looking beyond to the next wave of Android phones on AT&T, unless nothing better is coming anytime soon.
I am subject to an odd process where I put in for an upgrade now and will get approval in four months, at which point I get to choose a new phone, which means I merely need to know that a phone I want will be available four months from now. If a good phone is coming in 5 or 6 months, it makes sense to wait, otherwise, I can put in now and see, four months from now, if the Atrix's bootloader has been smashed to hell and good custom ROMs are available, and if not, get an Inspire.
So, what good-looking Android phone are here or on the way. Here's what I've been able to determine, with pros and cons:
Motorola Atrix
Available Now
Pros:
Dual core 1 GHz Tegra 2
1 GB RAM
Fingerprint scanner
Front-facing camera
"4"G
HDMI out
Giant battery - 1930 mAh
16 GB internal memory
Highest resolution screen - 540 x 960
Gorilla Glass
Cons:
Past experience with AT&T says that custom ROMs will be few and far between
Froyo (and lack of ROMs means we can't fix this ourselves)
Slow webtop experience (we can't, yet, fix ourselves)
Internet speeds were terrible in store
4-inch screen (not necessarily a bad thing, but a point to consider)
HTC Inspire
Available Now
Pros:
4.3-inch screen (bigger than the Atrix)
HTC (ROMs galore!)
8 Megapixel camera (Atrix has 5)
Cons:
No front camera
Much smaller battery - 1230 mAh
4 GB internal memory
1 GHz Snapdragon single core processor
768 MB RAM
Lower screen resolution than the Atrix - 480 x 800
Lousy speakerphone
No HDMI
Samsung Infuse
Available Mid-2011
Pros:
1.2 GHz Hummingbird (single core, but faster)
8 Megapixel camera with 1080p video
Front facing camera - 1.3 Megapixels (four times the Atrix)
Super AMOLED Plus screen
Decent battery (1750 mAH)
As flashable as any Samsung (much better than Motorola)
16 GB internal memory
Cons:
4.5 inch screen (tablet territory, some may love it)
Lower screen resolution than the Atrix - 480 x 800
Only one core
RAM unknown
LG Optimus 2X
Availability: Who knows?
Pros:
Tegra 2, like the Atrix
Decent 1500 mAH battery
HDMI out
Gyroscope
Cons:
No carriers announced
8 GB internal memory
Samsung Galaxy S2
Availability: Q2
Pros:
Ships with Gingerbread
Exynos 1 GHz dual core processor
4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with Gorilla Glass
16 GB internal memory, 32 GB on some models
8 Megapixel camera with 1080p video and image stabilization
Front facing camera - 2 megapixels, almost 7X the Atrix
Gyroscope
Excellent 1630 mAH battery (no Atrix, but pretty good)
Quad core GPU
NFC (some versions)
HDMI out
Bluetooth 3.0
Cons:
Lower resolution than the Atrix - 480x800
Not yet announced for AT&T (but probably coming)
Looking at all that, I'm thinking that the best bet is that the only true Atrix competitor is the S2, and assume that it will come out mide July, like the Captivate. I can put in for an upgrade in late March, which should give the S2 enough time to come to market and be reviewed, plus the Atrix to hopefully get some ROMs, and make the call.
Are there any other phones worth looking forward to? Is there any other reason to choose the Inspire or Infuse, or to not put my chips on the Atrix or Infuse?
There is always going to be a group of new phones coming out soon. I'd say just pick the one you like the most at the time. If something else you can't live without comes out in a few months (and it will) just sell the phone you bought to cover most of the out of contract price of your next one.
I returned my Inspire to get the Atrix so that's where I stand there.
I would never buy another Samsung Android device unless the show a commitment to upgrading. They tend to just want you to buy the next phone instead.
LG Optimus looks nice, but I hate LG phones so I'd stay away. Generally poor build quality and software.
These questions may be better answered in the General forum, not the Atrix specific General forum.
In here you are limiting your population to people that are looking about Atrix specific stuff.
I'm typing this on my inspire. Saying that, I love it a lot. It is my first android, and in my opinion probably the best way to enter it.
My only complaint is the battery. Even being small, it does power management well and lasts longer than my dads iphone 3gs. (maybe some debate if that's froyo I guess)
With rooting/roms, I'm sure I could make the battery last longer by removing bloat ware and stuff.
the way I see it, phones are out matched months after they come out. Better phones will be developed even after phones are announced. That's what competition does to technology. So why torture yourself thinking about what MAY come out, when months later better suff will be out.

Perhaps. I guess what I'm really asking is that, now that the Atrix is available and people have tried it out, do they still want the Atrix, or is it worth waiting just a couple more months?

Absolutely. I think that what it comes down to is:
The Atrix got us all very excited, but the excitement is fading under a number of negatives:
1 - terrible pricing on the dock and tethering policy
2 - Motorola's pointless signing of the bootloader, which only removes value from the device
3 - the laptop dock has a lot of dissapointments (touchpad, speed)
On the other hand, the Atrix is still an incredible phone, and it goes us excited for some great reasons:
1 - killer processor
2 - huge battery
3 - unique features (docks, fingerprint reader)
4 - somewhat rare features (front facing camera, lots of internal [non-MicroSD] storage, HDMI out)
What makes it tough is the Galaxy S2, which doesn't have the unique features, but has everything else the Atrix has and more
Vs. Atrix:
Atrix negatives:
2 - Samsung's are easier to load custom ROMs on
Atrix positives:
1 - Also has a killer processor, one that, when tested, could even beat the Atrix
2 - Larger than average battery
4 - better rare features (better front facing camera, more internal storage
And its own positives:
1 - better camera
2 - Super AMOLED plus screen (amazing bright colors, lower power usage)
3 - bigger screen
4 - Gyroscope
5 - 1080p video
And just one known negative:
1 - Lower resolution screen
So, what this thread should really be is:
Do you still want the Atrix, or do you plan on waiting just 5 months for the Galaxy S2?
My upgrade date is in three days, I'm hoping that they'll crack the bootloader issue for the atrix pretty soon, I will not buy the phone without it.
The only real con I see for the Atrix is the lack of an LTE radio on it, if you get one you'll be stuck with it for the next two years ( unless you want to pay full price ) and LTE should be up and running ( in some areas ) in that time frame.
Even though I've been an ATT customer for 8 years I hold no loyalty to them, I'm waiting for more info to come on the HTC " pyramid " and could switch to T-Mobile if that phone has a bigger battery than the pathetic things that HTC puts in them now. We all know HTC seems to be the devs favorite brand and CM would positively fly on a dual core phone.
After owning a Craptivate I wont even consider another Samsung phone. I don't care how impressive the specs are Samsung will find a way to screw it up. If you don't like the Atrix then just wait a few months for the next great HTC phone. The Inspire is nice, but it' s just a lightly upgraded Evo and cant compete with the Atrix.

I love HTC, and really wanted my next phone to be an HTC. But I feel like I can't rely on them to bring good hardware to AT&T. My current phone is their Rhodium, and since then I've seen:
Droid Incredible - Looks great, not on AT&T
Desire Z - Great keyboard, not on AT&T
Evo - Kinda special at the time, but not on AT&T
7 Pro - Amazing keyboard, probably never coming to AT&T
Aria - Wonderful phone, my wife loves it, but not for power users
I felt like HTC all of a sudden decided it hated AT&T. Now we've got two new ones:
Inspire - updated Evo, decent but old hat, doesn't stand up to the other phones released at the time
Thunderbolt - slightly better than the Inspire, not coming to AT&T
I hope HTC comes up with something special by summer, but I'm not holding my breath. I am on my fourth consecutive HTC phone, and right now, it looks like my last.

PSA: CES is just around the corner

Where am I going with this one ?
Just wait 3 more weeks and many more devices shall be revealed. Ones with same/faster CPUs, same/comparable resolution (any pixels in excess of 1920x1200 are an overkill in this size and only make it work harder for no visual gain), same 2GB RAM, microSD expansion, keyboard docks, decent chargers. And no light bleed May be even with a WACOM stylus.
WACOM screens are different type of touchscreen and arent really compatible with the high resolution displays. If you want one of those just get the Note II 10.1 since that will probably be the only device with such a feature until the Note III

Wait even longer and there will be yet other devices with 4 gigs of RAM, 2 microSD slots, better screens and 8 core CPUs!!!
What is the point of your idiot post? Trolling? Some strange hatred of a decent, cheap tablet? Did Nexus10 kill your parents?
Even if CES brings many cool tablets, they likely won't go on sale until March at the earliest and probably longer. The Nexus 10 is a fine tablet with a great spec set. The screen is nice (no, 1920x1200 isn't enough for me, I have exceptional eyesight and prefer very high resolution) and the speed is good. Having unadulterated 4.2 with updates is nice too. The light bleed thing is blown WAY out of proportion. It is an issue on some, but I've found that the vast majority of people I've spoken with would never notice it or find it to be an issue. Mine has no problems with it. And I bet none of them will be $400 when released...
Basically, you can keep waiting for better and better devices or you can buy this one that is very good. If it suits your needs, I think you'll be happy with it. If you keep chasing specs, well then yes, you'll be sorry in a month when the new tech comes. And then again in another month when still newer stuff comes. And again and again.
Many of us have older tablets and an itch to upgrade. Original expectations were sky-high, but somewhat tempered by early feedback.
I have N10 in stock in stores just 2 miles away from where I live. Just might pull the trigger, but not before I see what's announced at CES.
Been an avid Android user - ordered my N1 the hour it was announced and never looked back. Use Android tablet daily, around 2 hours every day.
Aint no troll, just an educated and spoiled bourgeois consumer who likes to understand his options.
Have to agree with kpluiten. This post serves no purpose.

On subject of cars - I *waited* for VW to release diesel Passat. I now enjoy 50MPG hwy and laugh all the way to the bank. Anyone in the market for a new SUV outta be crazy not to wait a bit - in Jan there will be diesel Cherokees released in US market. V6 diesel Motori engine ... 40MPG hwy likely .
So sometimes it is worth to wait a little - builds one's character too, not a bad thing in this age of ppl wanting instant gratification

New Nexus 7 (N7B) underwhelms

Small tabs are usually held in portrait, so the narrow vertical bezel will make it harder to hold, unless 4.3 does what iOS did and void the touch zones along the edges.
N7B will be slower than N4, since it has to push 1080p vs N4's 720p (more precisely, 2.25x pixels).
Given all the hype and hope of Miracast last November, and the bitter disappointment when both N7 & N10 couldn't have it, I was expecting that it would be a major feature on this second wave of Nexus tabs. But alas, it apparently isn't to be. Instead, we get the "Slimport" which is yet another proprietary port that require a custom cable. Why not micro-HDMI?
Of all the features that can be upgraded/added, "Moar Pixels" is probably the last on my list. Was there ever any complaint of the N7 screen being too grainy? Can you actually see a diff between 720p and 1080p on a 7"? But we get moar pixos anyway, along with a price bump and probably worse battery life and performance. One would've thought Google learned this lesson with the N10.
The OG N7's main appeal was that it was low-priced, but with reasonable quality and decent specs. It was the Kindle Killer. But now as OEMs come out with cheaper & better tabs (eg Sero 7 Pro), N7B is tacking upwind with a more expensive tablet, with no meaningful new functionality, and the same fault that afflicts all Nexus toys: no SD slot.
No doubt this post won't win any popularity contest, given the usual launch frenzy for new Google toys. But someone has to point out that the emperor is wearing his birthday suit.
Do you know what, whilst I'm very excited about the New N7 and will be doing whatever I can to trade my 1st gen in for a 2nd gen, you raise some very good points.
1 - I totally agree that Google have yet again taken away from us what we all asked for (HDMI) and fit it with yet another random port (Slimport) that needs a special cable as you stated.
2 - I think improving the screen is a good thing, but again a 7 inch 720p is probably sufficient, atleast they don't try and look cool and call it a "Retina" and hope that everyone thinks its special because it has a weird name.
3 - The price point however is something that I personally won't fault Google on, when the first N7 came out it was almost unbelievable and yet to this day my N7 runs like a dream.
Some very good points you've raised!
It hasn't even come out yet. We don't know if these things being leaked are 100%

Is there a 7" android tablet out with better specs?
Not that I am aware of, so why you complaining? Its $230, you are basically getting a super sized N4 for $120 less. Sounds like a steal to me, sure the current specs will be out done by someone else sooner, but who really cares chances are you are just going to selling the 2nd gen at some point and buy the 3rd gen.
Point is this is def an upgrade over the 1st gen tablet.

Just wondering.. Do you even have a nexus 7?
Google changed everything with the nexus 7 and the new model only improves things. It is a great device and there is nothing that compares in its price range. The 7 is a world above the kindle. I have owned both. The kindle I gave away and the 7 I loved. I only sold it because I knew a new model is coming.
I really don't understand the negativity here. Still on the SD slot thing? I think people who need to store 80 gigs on a phone or tablet are living in the past. Nobody can use 80 gigs during a day. Much of the space is just filled with junk.. It really isn't needed. Shall there is a 32 gig model. Surely that had to be enough.
You are entitled to your choice but personally I could give a crap about an sd card on a device that is faster than hell and cheaper too. It is a quality device and durable too. All around great device..

One more thing.. Small tablets are not " held in portrait" .. Can be held and viewed either way for different things. Obviously you know this but just saying.. The 7 is very hands friendly and the bezel is not a problem. This is why I asked if you had one because if you did you would know how comfortable it is to use and hold onto.
Also... The majority of people buying a 7 inch tablet don't care about miracast or even an HDMI port. It would be nice but I don't think it would be worth another $100 or what ever they would have to charge for it..
As for the display.. I doubt the new nexus will be slower. There was much resources to spare on the last model. And the higher res is just the trend these days. I don't mind it at all and if they did not do it I'm sure it would have been on your list of negatives.

I for one CAN see the grains in text on the old Nexus and just barely in text even on the Retina iPads. So I DO need a device with the ppi the new Nexus 7 is promising and I also wanted it no bigger or heavier than the old Nexus 7 . That was the only feature I was really hoping for, so I will be very happy with the new Nexus 7.
I don't understand where people get the idea to use 7 inch Android devices in portrait mode? Unless you are reading an ebook or using a phone app, portrait mode usually gives you tiny text, and just turning it to landscape tremendously improves user experience. And if you do use it in portrait, you can hold it like a phone, it is narrow enough so it can be held in one hand (unlike an iPad mini, unless you have gigantic hands). You need bezels when you hold it in landscape, and guess what? Those bezels are there so you can do that comfortably too. I already have a 10 inch and an 8 inch Android tablet. I gave away my old Nexus 7, but I am buying the new Nexus BECAUSE of its size, bezels and resolution. There are many choices out there. If the Nexus doesn't offer what you want, there are other devices for you to choose from. If you want a grainy screen and big bezels with a larger screen look at the Samsung tablets. My Note 8 fits that description but is still perfect for work since its primary purpose is taking notes. I still want the Nexus 7 at home anyway, because for me, outside of work, it is a much better fit.

Pushing a higher res doesn't necessarily mean it's slower. The Adreno 320 is a beast, and the N7B pulls a higher framerate than the current N4 on benchmarks, from what I can tell. Also, the Snapdragon S4 Pro can run up to 3 instructions per clock cycle, whereas older Snapdragons can run 2. This means 2 things. One - it can perform better than processors at the same clock rate, as it is 50% more efficient, and two - it will actually save battery, as more commands can be run on a lower clock rate, so you don't need to push the processor. UNDERCLOCKED to 1.2ghz...on paper, slower than the current N7, it will perform like a Snapdragon at 1.8ghz...alot of power for the given speed. Hell, if I get one, the first thing I'm doing is using the CyanogenMod performance controls to underclock it. It's helluva more powerful than I need.
Wouldn't it be more wise to compare the Nexus 7 2nd Gen to the original Nexus 7 along with similar form factor in terms of performance than a phone?
The Adreno 320 is capable of running 1920x1200 fine.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
The s4 pro with 2gh of ram is BARELY phased at all by a 720p display at 1.5ghz (even as low as 1ghz) so if the nexus 7 ii runs a s4 pro at 1.7ghz and has 2-3gb ram, it will be fine

the touch zones are necessary on the ipad mini because it's too wide to comfortably palm. on a device that is more narrow you should be palming it and the fingers would be touching the sides not the front of the device. it isn't any difference than holding a phone which is smaller. so the idea is the more at rest your hand is and more light the device the less fatigue while holding it over time
If you use a DUMB launcher that doesn't support multitouch (only registers last input) then you could get away with small bevels. But Android doesn't have Dumb launchers. Our launchers utilize multi-finger gestures, pinch/zoom, sliding, edge support, etc.
So Android needs bezels unless you dumb down the launchers and other apps.

I don't understand this reasoning. You shouldn't be clawing the device in portrait where fingers are touching the screen. It causes fatigue. It does in fact have a bezel just a smaller one which likely accounts for any finger overhang. Maybe it infringes on the way some people prefer to hold their device or have particularly large hands that cause more overhang but I think some of these people should try to learn how to palm because the hand is in more of a resting state than pinching or claw grips (it remains to be seen how the new back material supports palming as the current material is very effective at preventing slipping when holding a device loosely)
Don't know why there would be negativity about the new Nexus. In comparison, even of the Old Nexus 7, or say the Transformer Infinity (TF700) with the 1920x1200 screen as well with the Tegra 3 in it, from benchmarks, the new N7-2 crushes the old Tegra 3 CPU/GPU and the craptastic NAND to go with the tablets.
Myself owning a TF700 and trying the Nexus 7 before returning it because of the same faults. this looks like to fit the bill. High res screen, good performance and should be better on the battery life than that of the Tegra 3 devices since they sucked power and then some.

There is nothing wrong with this SOC, there is nothing wrong with this device. The price is still extremely cheap, at $229 for the 16GB. Same specs as the N4, but cheaper and with a better display?
You don't have to upgrade your currently N7 if you don't want to.
>Is there a 7" android tablet out with better specs?
Yes. The specs that matter to most people--storage expandability, HDMI-out--are indeed offered by many non-Nexus tablets, even the cheapies. As said, I didn't see any outcry for 1080p in a 7" panel, or another proprietary video-out port.
We'll know how the S4 Pro handles 1080p soon enough. It's the exact same SoC in N4, which had to push only 720p. Those familiar with the N10 should still remember how everyone lauded the (then new) Exynos 5 chip, only to find out that it can barely power the N10's 1440p res.
With respect to this morning's "breakfast" announcement, Chromecast similarly disappoints as it's yet another proprietary protocol/widget, and Miracast is now seemingly ignored. Chromecast is limited to 2.4GHz, not the wider bandwidth of 5GHz, let alone WiGig & similar. Really?? Where's 802.11ac support? Not sure what Google is thinking of here with all these inferior proprietary tech.
As for 4.3, it's a wash since it'll be available to all Nexus toys--and in a week, all toys that use CM and 3rd-party ROMs. But as with all the things announced today, 4.3 likewise underwhelms with fairly minor incremental improvements.
>It is a great device and there is nothing that compares in its price range.
Yes, because most 7" tablets have now dropped to the $150 range, including the 16GB OG N7, the Asus MeMo Pad HD 7, and the Hisense Sero 7 Pro. All are good all-around performers, and except for the OG N7, the others have expandable storage. Sero has HDMI-out and MeMo has Miracast. In comparison, the N7B is $80 higher, or more than 50% more expensive than the competition.
Walmart sells the Sero line, which equates to strong distribution that the N7 will never reach. The Asus MeMo should have similar availability.
This isn't to say that the N7B is a bad tablet. Obviously, it improves on the specs of the OG N7, but the improvements aren't meaningful to the average user, and the +50% price comparison to the competition (that has better functionality and wider distribution) bodes poorly for the N7B. Likewise, the days of N7 being the savior of Android tablets are long over. Android tabs are here, and the competition is capable.
Walmart sells the nexus too.
And just about every major electolronics store will be selling the Nexus 7 2 as well. So saying the Sero will have broader market is clearly wrong.
Only XDA and android nerds know about the sero 7 line up. Some mom and dad walking in to Walmart looking to buy their kid a cheap tablet isn't going to know the difference between them all. Chances are they will buy the cheapest one (which is not the Sero 7Pro).
I agree that the better specs are subjective, but when you are talking about raw performance the 2nd gen N7 is better than anything else in its category.

You realize that SlimPort uses the standard microUSB port and a cable to connect to DisplayPort, HDMI, or VGA.... Right? So it's exactly like anything else, just a new cable.

Why did you choose Xperia Z2?

Hi all, refer to the above let's discuss why you choose xperia z2 compare with others device.
is it because the design, Spec, price, sony fans or others.
Sent from my LT26w using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Simply because it's the best flagship on the market at the moment.
S5 sucked balls. It will be Z2 unless HTC suprises us with a monster in about 1 month.

Just saw ARTICLE about new IPS screen and Sony finally have great and quality product.
I'm completely satisfied with my Z1 but if I get some interesting offer (like I got for Z1) I'll definitely try it.
Why?
Because, now, Z1 is ultimate device and Sony just upgraded it
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
Because the Z2 is the best on the market just now, S5 rom is 8Gb compared to the Z2's 4Gb, plus Z2 has way more excellent specs. I don't care that Samsung maybe releasing a 64bit S5 later this year as I think it is too early for me to get into 64 bit phones just now; as infrastructure etc is not in place yet i.e. app devs have yet to jump on board. That is my opinion anyway...
Waterproofing
Micro SD slot
Front facing speakers
Great camera
And thankfully a big battery
Also simple things like a camera shutter button make this the best phone on the market atm.
BTW, would not touch the S5. The design combined with touchwiz is enough to put me off.
I had a Z, ZL and now Z1. Logical to have a Z2 next.

Lost faith in Samsung with there handling of s3 updates plus had problems with them regarding other Samsung products. Been a fan of sony for a while now and its coming close to my phone upgrade and the Z2 currently looks like it. I have a few months to go so plenty of time to judge the competition and see what negatives might crop up about the z2.
As long as root is easily gained with minimal drawback Ill most likely be picking up the z2.
Plus the specs of this phone do look pretty good to me
Bigger battery, nicer look, wanted something that wasn't made by Samsung for once.

Eye friendly...
I am one of the small amount percentage of population who seems to suffer from LED's displays... Sony triluminos display tech, seems to be benign on our eyes. At least sony Vaio Pro 13 and flip are better displays... This issue has years... Hope Z2 is really eye friendly to me too...
Seems spectrum of light of triluminos technology is more balanced. Not a huge blue spike on spectrum...
Here you could see a thread talking on LED's:

My HTC One is killing my eyes...

because of this past year i cannot trust Sony easily!
i love to buy Xperia Z2 IF all thing about display & ... be right!
if no two quality of display!
sharp display! jdc! OR all story like those!
It s ok if sony s using different company for display supplying BUT not different quality from each company.
:good:
My first phone was the Motorola RAZR V3i and have been a loyal user since then with Moto Droid & Moto RAZR... just loved the premium build quality along with excellent specs. Beauty with brains! Loved the design of Xperia Z & Z1 but was hesitant to switch due to the screen quality as I'm spoiled by AMOLED on my RAZR.
But the Z2 seems like the only phone to be awesome inside & out with no drawbacks to give me second thoughts why not to buy it... (Size was a little concern but I can live with that)
It's either the htc one 2014 or z2. I'm going to buy on tmobile 's jump program if i do decide to get one of these puppies. The phone addict in me wants the latest and greatest, but honestly don't "need" one just yet since I have the N5.
I expect by Fall, everyone will update their SOCs with 64 bit cpus. Also hope that finger print unlock and pw will be supported more widely. Not to mention waterproof and 3GB of ram. These will be must have options.

I also want to see what htc will bring to the table. I doubt it can match sony. Also would need a case since you can't get protection on the alu back.
I don't really see a need for 64 bit systems. What do you see 64 bit bring? Do phones need a new OS to match it? Will support for old systems stop?
We might not need it in the consumer space, but it's one of those things where if you can get it as a little to no-cost option, why not? I can envision a bunch of enterprise use cases like big data analytics and data visualization, not to mention phones/phablets/tablets with > 4gb of ram etc
I'm currently on a htc one x, my contract has 2 weeks on it, so I started looking. The galaxy s5 is a massive fail in my eyes, and I'm just getting bored with HTC. As soon as a saw a leak of sense 6 I knew I'd be bored. I'm going to miss BlinkFeed, but the look of the Z2 and the specs, plus noise cancelling and stereo speakers, as well as the camera (going on a once in a lifetime holiday in August), coupled with an sd card slot and waterproofing (11 pools in the resort), I think it'd be a crime not to go for the Z2. I am worried about the size a little bit, even tho I have big hands.
I have the HTC one and have very little complaints about it and the 2014 version looks promissing but that panel that used to have the capacitive buttons on it is still there but now it's just a logo. Idk why they would keep that. I hate wasted space and big bezels and I think the Z2 once I get Cyanogenmod running on it would be amazing
because the first android phone that i used was sony
sony phones are great in price , support in my country and dev's are supporting them great
and the most important one because sony phones are blazing fast and their software is useful and they don't have useless futures that only make your phone slower and they will eat your ram as hell
thats why i decided to buy sony z2
I love the design,
I love the software,
I love the camera,
I love the build quality,
I love the bigger battery,
I love front facing speakers,
And 3gb of Ram which the s5 don't have (besides I got the note 3, I dont need any more Samsung devices for now)
The Z2 and the note 3 will do me for now

All of the above + 3GB RAM is what sold me. It should also make this phone relevant for a while. Can't wait for the Z2 to arrive!

Does it really not support Java?
I'm on hot waters for deciding a new phone. If this doesn't come to US and being able to be used on Verizon, that's where I'm making the jump for the Galaxy S7 Edge. I have everything dedicated towards my current phone, but being outdated is no fun. :/

Not without being on America's number one network.
If you mean you need CDMA I fear they give very few damns to something that adds complexity with no real gain.
Also, for your's sake (given you are posting on XDA, right?) you should avoid locked down cramped device.

64GB model?
Hey I saw 64GB model of Xperia X in GSMarena specifications
Is it true and will Xperia X Performance have that too? cause that would be so awesome.
And it's not listed in Sony Mobile page also and I saw in Chinese Website in Taobao they mentioned about 64GB model, which is really awesome if they bring to the table cause I feel like it's a must since Android OS is taking like 9-10GB of internal storage.

Giga,
Unfortunately, this phone WILL NOT work (at least not fully) on any CDMA networks/carriers........... Verizon, Sprint, & U.S. Cellular are all CDMA. The only major carriers that it WILL work on are the GSM ones............ T-Mobile or AT&T.
If you'd like more proof of this, then check here as I did. I have T-Mobile so for me it'll be fine. The only thing that's NOT fine is Sony taking F'ING FOREVER to release this d*mn phone! lol
You could always switch to T-Mobile too if you want. It just depends on your service area and how happy you are with Verizon. I had them before but I felt they charged too much, so I switched to T-Mobile and am VERY happy with them! You get more for less with them I feel. But like my sister lives in an area where T-Mobile is still not yet that strong (though this is changing rapidly IMO), and so she recently switched to Verizon and is very happy. But typically wherever I go I have a strong signal, especially since they recently cleared a Band 12 (700 MHz bandwidth spectrum) issue in my area. Now even indoors in like downtown (Chicago) area where before I had a low or no signal, it's now full strength! Plus if you switch they'll cover your early termination fees (if any) with Verizon.
I had the Z3 and it was the BEST phone ever! I recently got the S7 Edge and it's really nice but was too big IMO. Plus my fingers would accidentally sometimes hit stuff on the edge sides and activate/affect stuff on the screen like apps or video that I didn't intend to be touched. Maybe just takes some getting used to? So I switched to the regular S7 and yeah it's a great phone overall but due to me being unhappy with the physical home button, the sound quality and sound-related issues on this phone (crappy speaker, issues with connecting to portable amp/DACs) and lousy screen brightness (sucks under heavy sunlight), I am basically COUNTING THE DAYS until the X Performance is released! Sony phones are like the only ones left that I can stand at this point. lol
I wanted to give Samsung another chance after S5 (which I kept for like 4 days and returned cuz I couldn't stand it either lol), plus with all the promos they had like free Netflix etc I said F it. I love the promos, but now I feel stuck with the phone. I just hope Sony releases the X Performance by June as they said they would. I don't know why it's taking so long as everyone else has or will have released their phones by May (HTC 10). The only news we have is that the Xperia XA & X are to be released in the UK in early June (XA) and on May 20th (X). Lucky for them, though they are NOT getting the X Performance but we in the U.S. are.

I'm not familiar with the bands for verizon, but I'm pretty sure the new modem covers *all* broadbands even the unspecified ones programmable by software. I forgot where I saw this, but it looked really cool, anyways will those work?
I was checking Sony Mobile's US site tonight to see if there was an update on release dates and noticed that they had removed the fingerprint sensor from the specs list. I don't think it's ever had water resistance listed since I've been checking on updates. These features are both listed on Sony's Italian site. Why doesn't Sony want to succeed in the US? Who's going to pay probably $700+ for one of these? I guess I have to decide between the Z3 or a Z5 if I'm going to get a Sony phone. I was going to wait on the X Performance since it should be a little more durable, even though I don't think it looks as nice.
Hey Buggy,
Yeah you're right! And this is not even a WEEK after they'd added the fingerprint sensor TO the U.S. X Performance! Man, I love Sony's Xperia phones, but their marketing & sales people are f'ing stupid!! lol
The water resistance (IP65/68) is only available on the global/international model, which I am sure is the same as the Italian model. The U.S. model does NOT have this listed anywhere, so it won't have it either. This section from the int'l version's full specs page proves that even more so: "Durability
IP65/IP68 **; **: This service is not available in all variants or markets." So I am sure the U.S. variant won't have it (stupid Sony).
It sure DOES feel like they don't want to succeed, doesn't it? The ONLY good thing that the U.S. variant has that the other variants apparently do not is the inclusion of the QNovo Quick Charge 3.0 charger IN the box! So now, for the first time ever, Sony is giving us U.S. citizens something no other country is getting (wow! lol). If you go to the U.S. site you'll see it listed towards the bottom. But I'd still rather have water-resistance and a functioning fingerprint sensor.
I had the Z3 and it was the BEST phone I've ever had! I have the S7 now and yeah it's a great phone "overall" but once the X Performance comes out, I'm totally selling my S7 and getting the X Perf. F Samsung. lol No other phone out there does it for me. Only one that I'd even get is the HTC 10, but that would only be if I couldn't get the X Perf for some reason.
I actually really like the look of the Xperia X Performance. At first I didn't think I'd like it w/o the glass back, but actually, the graphite black and silver/white models have a brushed aluminum/hairline finish, which I LOVE. I'm super excited to get this phone! I even actually FOUND an online seller (who just happens to be located 10 min away from me......Chicago suburbs) who has the X Performance in all 4 colors available for pre-order right now. The company is called Expansys, and they have international locations all over the world. The U.S. Expansys site has the int'l (and yes better lol) version of the X Performance, so I pre-ordered it last week! If interested, go here to pre-order your own today! They have an A+ rating on the Better Business Bureau website, and I know of one person who's already ordered from them several times w/o any issues. Current release date for X Perf is 1st week of July. Hopefully that doesn't change (stupid Sony lol).
Well I think I've decided to just go with the Z3 or Z5(or the compact) for now and save a few hundred dollars. Sad that our choice for the new phone is a gimped version with a warranty or the no warranty international version with all the features(minus the quick charger). Does insurance like Square Trade cover phones without warranties?
I've enjoyed my HTC One M7 and wouldn't be looking for a new phone if I hadn't cracked it's screen. It still works just fine though, but it's given me an excuse to finally try a new brand and I've always thought Sony's were nice looking. I have a Tablet S that has worked well for me, even though Sony quickly abandoned it. The HTC 10 is also one of the only other phones I'd consider. Just hate that they ditched the distinctive front speakers. It now looks like a generic phone in front. I've never liked the looks of Samsung's UI or their phones...just too rounded. LG's V10 is nice, but too big.
Buggy,
You may (or may not) want to still get the XP after hearing what I have to say here. But either way (Z3, Z5, or XP), they are all great phones. The XP may not have the glass back of the Z-series, but for the most part it IS an improvement over both those phones. The XP has a better processor, the Snapdragon 820, which is more power-efficient than the Z5's 810 (40% more actually), and the slightly smaller screen adds to that 40% too. It has the same main camera sensor, but "improved algorithms" in the software to make for even better pictures, in addition to that "Predictive Hybrid Autofocus" feature which Sony has focused a great deal on. This official comparison review video of the Z5 vs. the X (X & XP have the SAME screen & camera) highlights some of the other improvements. But as the video points out, the main specs might be the same, but the software is apparently different. And the front camera apparently has better specs too. Watch it all if you like, but definitely watch 3:35-4:25 with regards to the screen brightness & color accuracy comparisons, and a little after that are the camera comparisons. To me, the XP is worth waiting for. But that's me. I have the S7 and the screen brightness on it sux a$$ under heavy sunlight, so I believe the XP will be better after watching that video. I'll be SHOCKED if the XP's brightness isn't higher than the S7's. I'll be comparing them both regarding that on the day I get the XP. lol Then there's this camera comparison b/t the XP, HTC 10, and Galaxy S7. For the first time EVER, Sony's smartphone camera BEATS Samsung's in quality and color accuracy while in auto mode! I don't believe this was the case even with the Z5. And this isn't even the final release version of the camera software either!
I have some good news regarding insurance on the unlocked XP. Not sure on Square Trade, but I have T-Mobile as my carrier, and they use Assurance for the phone insurance. I confirmed with TWO T-Mobile reps and ONE Assurance rep that as long as I register the XP on my T-Mobile account and keep paying the $8/mo insurance charge that Assurance WILL insure my unlocked XP phone, even though of course I'm NOT buying it from T-Mobile. This was VERY good news to hear! lol So now buying the (cheaper) int'l version makes even more sense.
Sounds like we think alike. I had the M8 and it was my SECOND favorite phone of all time, with the Z3 being #1 of course. lol That sux about your M7 screen, but yeah that was 3 years ago, so now maybe it IS time for an upgrade, especially if you have a cracked screen. I couldn't agree more on HTC's idiotic decision to remove the 10's bottom speaker and move it to the bottom side, and how it degraded the looks. They could've easily put that fingerprint sensor in front (which is NOT a physical button you can press by the way, which is a + IMO) on the back somewhere or the side like Sony does. I think they were trying emulate Samsung and Apple, which yes makes the phone look more generic. I hope the HTC 11 will see a return of the front-facing stereo speakers for HTC. That's one of the reasons I love Sony so much. They have not abandoned that speaker set up on their flagship phones, and they are still making a flagship-worthy phone that is NOT a phablet. I hate phablets (tried the S7 Edge.......too big IMO), so I'm glad Sony hasn't gone that route. If the XP wasn't coming out, I'd strongly consider the HTC 10 actually.
I too strongly considered the LG V10, mainly because LG put a premium amp/DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) chipset in the V10. It has the same chipset used in my $300 Oppo HA-2 portable amp/DAC. With a phone like that I wouldn't need the HA-2 in b/t my phone and headphones anymore, but again like you, I felt it was simply too big, so I passed, despite its great specs. And yes..... Samsung. lol Not a fan either of their UI or phones, though both have improved much in the last couple of years (I def like that they ditched the plastic-bodied phones finally, which I'm sure Sony and Apple had an influence on lol). The UI is still laggy IMO (downloads faster than my parents' Xperia Z1s ((2014)), but when jumping from app to app on the Z1s, I notice it loads up QUICKER than the S7, for real), the menu is less confusing than the S5's was but still not as simple as HTC's and Sony's, the stupid & awful-sounding lone bottom-facing speaker, the constant skipping when listening to music on it via the MicroUSB port (super annoying), and that physical home button: I hate them. lol I tried to give Samsung another chance, but although the phone is great in many respects & I got some sweet promos from buying it (i.e. 1 year of free Netflix HD streaming, etc), I have no desire at this point to keep it any longer than I have to.
I love Sony's Xperia phones the most, so whichever one you get will be great for sure.

Buggy,
You may (or may not) want to still get the XP after hearing what I have to say here.
RockStar2005,
Thanks for your input and the tip on T-Mobile's insurance policy. I know I want a Sony phone, but I'm still so indecisive when there's quite a chunk of money involved. If the XP is over $700 are the improvements really worth $200-$300 more than a Z5 or Z3? Plus, how long is it really going to be before it's released here? Sony seems to be pushing back the release dates in Europe. Guess it will just give me more time to save up. lol

Buggy,
Not a problem. Thought you might find that information useful.
Yeah I understand. And you've got a cracked front screen to deal with as well. The price of the XP HERE in the U.S. will very likely be less than the price it goes for in other countries. We (the U.S.) don't charge VAT (Value-Added Tax) on imported products like other countries do, so that helps keeps the prices down. You may still pay a LOCAL tax, but not a VAT too. Just something to keep in mind.
I can't really tell you if it's "worth it" because you know my answer, but you may not feel the same way. Again, if I had a cracked screen I may not be so patient either. You could just buy the Z3 or Z5 then upgrade again when the XP is here, or at some point in the near future?
How long? That's a great question Buggy. lol Though Sony IMO makes the BEST phones, their marketing and sales departments are dumb as F. lol I mean, NO real ads for the Xperia smartphones here in the U.S.? No billboard or TV ads? Nope, but they do put those video ads up on YouTube! Of course, the reason why that's so dumb of them to do is that the only ppl who will see them are those who were gonna prob buy an Xperia phone anyway! lol You think if someone doesn't know about their phones they're gonna magically think to go to YouTube to watch their ad? And the ads aren't even that great typically, with one exception (see pics and especially the vid). They need more ads like this one that are personable, and also I think some ads with some big actors like George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, etc.
In countries like Sweden, Sony is just as big, if not bigger, than Samsung......and big surprise, they actually ADVERTISE there. lol But anyway, yes, the X got pushed back about 2 weeks, but I believe it will still come out in June. Now when it actually comes out HERE is another story. lol I wish I could tell you the XP will get released on time, but I don't know. Sony Mobile DID re-promote them all in the U.S. just yesterday (see link below, and videos too), but still, no dates were announced. I realize as time goes on that trying to make sense of their odd way of doing business is basically a waste of time. I'm just gonna wait for the phone, buy it, and hope they get their act together one day. lol
JUST saw this new article as I was typing this e-mail. Hopefully it means they are on schedule? Of course, I'm not buying the U.S. version anyway, but I figure the sooner either the U.S. or int'l version gets released, the sooner the U.S. will get both.

Well, as my phone is still working, I have time to wait. I'm just impatient and I want a shiny new phone now! (even is it ends up being a year or two older than the latest thing)
You'd think with also being a music and movie company they'd have some celebrities who'd do commercials for them...or at least do more product placement in videos and movies Music videos would be good because they probably get watched by a lot more people than most movies, and repeatedly. I guess they did with the last James Bond movie but it's not nearly enough. It would be nice if they made more of an effort here in the US to market their phones. They need to quit gimping the US versions though, and maybe that's why they don't do much to promote them. They'd have more people going "BUT WHYYY?!?!?!?! THAT'S SO STUPID!!," like me.
Buggy,
Yeah your phone is working which is good, but I hear you on being impatient and wanting to replace it. I'm hoping the new US videos mean they're fully intending on releasing the XP on time (1st week of July!). It makes me nervous though that the X is supposed to come out on June 10th, yet the U.S. Sony Mobile site STILL does not have it listed for pre-order, neither does the international site. The UK Amazon site has it for pre-order though, but the U.S. Amazon site doesn't even have it listed period. I'm hoping that maybe Sony will just release them all at one time here in the U.S., but who the F knows? lol God do I wish I could just put my foot up Sony Mobile's idiot CEO's ass just once! lol
Yes, I would AND DO think that! They had the Sony-Erickson phone (whatever its name was) in Casino Royale, which came out 10 years ago! lol Not sure on Quantum of Solace, but SkyFall (2012) featured the original Xperia Z in it. Then came SPECTRE last year........ that's when they stopped featuring Xperia phones because Daniel Craig and director Sam Mendes didn't think it was "Bond-worthy". So instead I think they featured some watch instead. They did however do a Bond-related ad which actually DID get some U.S. TV time (shocking, I know lol) but only ran for maybe a month? lol It featured Moneypenny and was actually an ad for both the Z5 and their new camera at the time. Whatever........that movie wasn't anything special anyway. lol It was nice though to actually see an Xperia ad on TV though vs. online.
I've been saying in these various forums for months now.........you're SONY........get some big actors like George Clooney, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, etc to do ads for you. DON'T make them generic or boring. Get a U.S. ad agency to do them perhaps. I mean, the last 2 actors I just mentioned have ALREADY DONE movies for Sony, so they already have an established relationship with them. I even wrote to Sony Mobile and told them to do this too. I mean, they should get like Sony Movies and Sony Music etc to invest some money into Sony Mobile too..................if SM features ads with these actors or musicians, it's a win-win for both parties. And yes, removing key features from the U.S. versions is inexcusable BS and needs to stop too. So frustrating. If I didn't love their phones to death (or hate the competing phones out there so much lol), I'd go elsewhere. I just hope the XP comes out on time. I mean, it's gotten so bad to where I'm literally checking out stuff daily. I even have a "Google Alerts" setup on the XP.........I get an e-mail every night right after midnight giving me updates on anything new that's related to it. lol Can't wait for this crap to be over with.

Pre-orders for XP begin June 19th, XP gets officially released on July 17th! Now, I think this is for the U.S. XP, which of course is somewhat lacking (no IP65/68, and I guess now they took the fingerprint sensor back off it), though it WILL come with the QNovo Quick Charge 3.0 charger. I though will be getting the int'l one, which I'm hoping will come out SOONER than the U.S. version? I know it will most likely be cheaper too, since the int'l Z5 is cheaper than the U.S. version is. But the fact that the U.S. one has a date at least means we have a better idea of when things will start to happen.
For now, I will keep my pre-order in place with Expansys, which is for the int'l one. They are located all over the world, but the U.S. one is like 10 minutes away from me (Chicago suburbs). But if U.S. Amazon gets the int'l one too by early July, then I'd rather just order from them.

Mind you there still is no information band support, nor is there info on finger print sensor or waterproofing.
