Hey everyone,
Yesterday I called up Verizon and was able to move my upgrade date rom August to, well, now. The phone I chose? The Maxx HD. I picked this phone based on two reasons: motoblur is nowhere near as bad as it was (I actually can't wait to start using some of the smart actions) and the battery life on the Galaxy Nexus (which broke on me: the usb port stopped working on the phone) I have made me decide the next phone I own would have more battery than I could possibly need. The build quality is just an extra in my opinion.
Long story short, even though this phone doesn't have the largest development thread, I think I'll be stock for a while anyway. Every phone I've owned had has either pure stock android or CM or something, so this will be the first phone in which I remain on something non-AOSP-ish. My phone should get here Friday and I can't wait. Oh, and any suggestions for using smart actions would be much appreciated!
Congratulations on getting Razr Maxx HD. Well imo, the stock launcher of this phone was not a finished product. I recently switched to Nova launcher and found a huge change in smoothness and responsiveness of this phone.

Agreed. The stock launcher is not optimized enough to be used for daily use. What I do miss from it is the Circle clock!

I too have recently bought a Razr HD over in the UK. Really like the phone. Had a Razr i previously and got chance of a nearly new HD. Signal reception is good like the razr i, infact better, which is important to me. Battery is better than the i though one place I work at signal is a bit variable and works the battery a little harder. Other than that a 6am to 11pm day often sees more than 50% left. This is the none maxx version. Build quality is good too. Very pleased with it.
I'm still on stock launcher, locked and unrooted. Question - what do you mean when you say the stock launcher is unfinished? Is it the home screen lags? I should try Apex or Nova having done so on previous phones. Don't want to lose the circles widget but suppose I could live without it?

Well, I'll play around with it for a few days and see what I like. I have Nova Prime already which I used on my Nexus, so it won't be too difficult of a transition. What surprised me when I opened up the box though, was the lack of Verizon branding on the bottom of the phone below the screen. Every version I've seen in stores or in person have a large "Verizon" right under the screen, but not mine! The only Verizon on the phone (besides the preinstalled apps) is the dark grey one on the back. Not bad.

Yes the stock launcher is laggy. Well i too felt like that when i bought the phone. Circle widget is really good, but i have found that after changing the launcher, battery life has also improved and trust me these third party launchers are really really smooth. Why unlock and root the phone when you have third party launchers and widgets to customize your phone, so save your phone's warranty.
I am using these addons on my phone.
1. Nova launcher
2. Miui V5 Icons
3. Battery Widget Reborn
4. Android Weather Widget
Love my phone with these installed. I will post screenshots of my screen later on today..
+1 for Nova Launcher - Ioving the stock Android look on my new RAZR Maxx HD

Well, I installed Nova Prime again and have to say wow, this phone flies now. It's incredibly fast, perhaps faster than my Nexus ever was. It just made me love this phone that much more. Oh, and not having to plug the phone in to charge after unplugging it Saturday morning is just something I'm still getting used to. I keep constantly checking the battery level because I just can't believe it. Haha.
My stock launcher isn't laggy one bit with heavy usage.
My favorite smart action is to disable gps and mobile data when at home Bc I have wifi.
You might also want one to turn all notifications or sync off during sleep time but ring loud for important people.
I doubt you'll need a rom.

Nova is hands down the best, in my opinion.
nova is the best by far
I was only excited about Smart Actions for a week and quickly got over it. If you decide to root and try new roms I highly suggest Xenon HD 4.2.2. with Nova launcher.

I ran Xenon on my old Nexus for a while before switching to PA. Very solid rom, but how's the battery life? The later versions sucked my Gnex dry quicker and quicker as I updated. (I know, crazy question with a Maxx HD, but I'm rather enjoying not having to charge every night haha)
Honestly I haven't figured out the battery life just yet as I can use the phone nearly the same and from 5 am-10ish pm one day I'll have 60% and another I might have 30%. Still as much as I use.... pretty good! They are working out a couple bugs right now but the latest build is awesome.

Well the bootloader is unlockable and the CM10.1 development thread is fairly lively. I use it as my daily driver. Most recent nightlies have an SOD issue, but it looks like that's getting cleared up.
+1 For Nova Launcher though, I use it on my Razr HD and my Transformer.

Its really pathetic. The phone literally cant handle ANYTHING. It can hardly even handle the fingerprint recognition. Its so slow to open your phone, that you are better off just disabling it.
This phone cant even handle 3D launcher animations.
Is this some kind of joke? Honestly... what is going on here?
My 3d launcher animations haven't had any problem. The phone to me is definitely very fast... and I didn't have any problems with live wallpaper.... then again I'm coming from a heavily modded 3GS that was pretty slow to begin with lol.
I'll agree with slower launcher performance with live wall papers but everything else works great for me. And that includes the fingerprint sensor...

My captivate makes this phone look slow. Thats how pathetic this is.
I'm owner of a atrix and also a nexus s.
The only cool thing I found on the atrix its how it plays flash content. That's it! Lol. I hate motoblur and is the first time I tried it. Motoblur its pathetic and slow ****! I ended up installing adw launcher ex to make it some how better ..I'm running same launcher on my NS and it runs smoothly as ****. Transitions are flawless and nice. Not the case on atrix. Played with settings and got it working better but still.
.. I'm sure it would get better with custom roms ...
The atrix is going back to Att. Pre ordering the galaxy s 2

I've found that Live Wallpapers reduce performance for all the phones I've owned (i.e. Captive, Inspire, and Atrix). I don't find that the Atrix is affected more so than the others. In fact, I think the Atrix runs Jumpgate better than the Inspire did.
edit: Also, I found that Motoblur ran faster than LauncherPro.

yeah I have beautiful widgets and the live clouds and grass moving with the clock widget with weather running all the time and everything is very fast, plus the finger reader works very quick within 1 sec i`m at my home screen ready to rock and roll, only really issue I had was with google earth was just updated and works flawless now yeah I also the jumpgate wall paper and I installed and it runs flawless too, I still use the stock launcher and eveything is still smooth fast

That's good to hear. Maybe you had something running in the background that was eating up resources?
I betcha the nexus S running android 2.3 has something to do with it too, doesn't 2.3 have a lot more hardware accelerated graphics in it?
I'm expecting the atrix to get a big speed boost from 2.3, having said that, I'm coming from an old G1, and the Atrix has been ridiculously fast compared to that, emails open immediately, unlock is instant, any app opens right away.
and I can use Trapster again it was unusably slow on the G1 (with cyanogenmod nightly btw)
I'm really confused why people are having so many issues... I've been running LWP since day 1 with no slow down. I rooted the phone and loaded up launcher pro almost immediately, but I can't imagine that's the reason why everything's been smooth for me.

LauncherPro runs like crap on the atrix, idky. Motoblur runs good. I am currently using golauncher, runs very well.
Also i have had 0 problems with lwps...all run great.
Any update on that?
I was told that Samsung's Galaxy S wallpapers (e.g. Ocean Wave) don't run on the Atrix AT ALL. It may be the Tegra 2 architecture, or the qHD screen. You can try it:

What about other GPU-intensive wallpapers, like Galactic Core? How smooth do they run?
Which launcher has the best performance, least battery drain in your guy's opinions? Looking at launcher pro, and go launcher ex, just curious sorry if it has been asked a million times. I searched but found nothing specifically about performance and battery life.
No launcher is going to seriously effect performance or battery life in a noticeable way. Use the one you like.
kinda been a stock launcher guy but after seeing some pic in another thread they look real classy, i just don't want anything too crazy or laggy
I like Launcher Pro... performance is good, but I dont see any difference in terms of battery use...

Unless there is a problem with the way the launcher manages memory or handles CPU with widgets/animations, it wont be any (noticeable amount) different than the stock launcher.
Been using launcher pro for months now, love it.

Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Both Launcher Pro and GO Launcher are speedy and smooth, and aren't going to affect battery life to any noticeable degree. You'd probably see more effect on battery life by turning down your screen brightness by 2%.
Both launchers you asked about have free versions, so just try them out, and see which interface/features you like better. That will probably be more of a decision maker than performance/battery life.
On my x10 mini pro, adw lagged somewhat on the gingerbread roms....but launcher pro was awsome...it was the default launcher on one of the gingerbread roms and I was really surprised to know that the free version gave such a quality perfomance...since then ive been using launcher pro...by buyin the plus version you also get to use the launcherpro widgets...and they're pretty cool...but one could do without it....
One con and the only one that I am facing is that...when I first boot..it doesnt respong i.e it takes some time to respond..as in even foo changing screens...i usually force close it the first time and then it runs like the wind !!
My final verdict would be to try launcher pro and go launcher....see which suits you the best...the menu and operating style..
P.S: one more thing I lovee and I mean love like hell bout launcher pro is that it loops the wallpapers i.e if you reach the last screen and swoop out in the same direction, it continues on to the first screen and doesnt jump to it as in adw....if you dont get it, try the launcher...you yourself would know!

I hate how laggy it is. Feels like it drags down the experience. But MotoBlur 4.0.4 on the other hand.....least obtrusive skin out there right now, in my opinion.
^^ this. Especially the launcher, first thing I did when I got my atrix is install go launcher. Also, how the option to enable/disable Mobile Data is not in with the other wireless settings - its in the battery section - drove me mad for awhile
Laggy and seriously ugly. Can't stand the UI at all its just really really ugly.
Some of the widgets weren't too bad though but on the whole it wasn't a very nice experience. Installed a new launcher after using the phone for a couple of weeks. Glad to be on cm7 now.

I like blur, never got what was so bad about it
Don't know how the launcher is laggy
in landscape mode opening up the app drawer take a second to load
but in portrait mode it is instant
scrolling is fast, no ghosting
apps open almost instantly
I think people here just need to install spare parts, fast animations plus some animations disabled plus compatibility mode and it flies
I like the actual launcher, I used to be thrown off by it because of the app drawer button on the side [g2x and defy had it in center] but I really like having CALL TORCHLIGHT CONTACTS APP DRAWER
I don't have any widgets except for wifi and gps toggle and my 4 basics text, browser, camera, navigation
I had a custom theme so I didn't have to deal with the blue
unfortunately no one has really worked on GB 2.3.5 themes for blur..just cyanogen themes
the camera app is GREAT

I'm waiting for the ICS update (like everyone else), and I thought that the best way to do it would be to go back to Blur. I'm considering switching to CM7 due to how long Motor's taking, but I try to stay away from custom ROMs anyway. By bootloader's software locked anyway.
From the UI point of view Motoblur 2.3 was a descent improvement and I can't really fault it. What ruined it for me both in 2.2 and 2.3 was the number of annoying bugs and one could tell both ROMs had no any kind of optimisations done on them giving the impression the phone is running on much slower CPU. I had previously listed all known bugs in 2.3 for Motorola, on their own Forums, and was updating it as I found more. Before Google purchased Motorola they decided to delete the entire forums to avoid bad publicity since Motorola was being hammered with late upgrades and not responding to anyone.
Generally applications crash more often on Motorola's GB version than other ROMs. Motorola released several updates, some significant, for US-users but nothing for the UK and many other countries where Atrix was sold well. It simply means Motorola knowing ignored the issues in their phones since last year or since GB was released.
I have almost removed everything that Motoblur didn't depend on so I could improve the overall performance of the phone. Without doing my own optimisation procedure I could not use Atrix for this long. Motorola has its own to blame for not investing more on the software side of Atrix and ruined a fantastic phone the money could buy. I'm glad Sanjay Jha is no longer with Motorola Mobility.

What do you guys think, normal HTC One because its features or the Google Edition for fast updates and a better look?
At first point I was really excited to see HTC One GE thinking that I'll definitely buy that version. But, I ended up buying Sense version of this phone and have to say that by using my brothers Nexus 4 and my Nexus 7 all the time, I love Sense 5.
The biggest problem for me with previous handsets, even One X was that Sense slowed down the whole device. I felt like it's stopping some of the great power which is hidden inside the gem so I kept rooting the phone straight away.
With One, I haven't thought about rooting it ever before. Sense 5 is very light, modern and fast. As a fan of Flipboard I am also loving blink feed.
So I guess Sense 5 wins for me but I it's only a matter of taste.
I went back to sense 5 its just that good! and theres nothing like the speed of Aosp on a dedicated nexus device. its just not the same on a non nexus device
I did a comparison

Flashed the full GE rom and ran it for 3 solid days. I have to honestly say that
Sense is better. Here are my observations:
1 - Battery life - BOTH excellent
2 - Lag - Sense has less lag
3 - Sound - This one to me is very important. Listening to mp3's on the device
both with Beats Audio ON the Sense rom has MUCH BETTER sound. Everything sounds
richer, more bass just sounds great. On the GE rom the sound was tinny. no comparison.
4 - Remote is back - controlling my complete home theatre.
5 - Email system on Sense is better for my corporate account
6 - Call quality - Again MUCH better on the Sense rom. Louder and clearer. Had calls fade in and out as reported on this and other threads with
the GE rom.
7 - Video recording - NO comparison - Sense is MUCH BETTER
8 - Camera - Again Zoe and the Sense enhancements - No comparison the Sense is better
9 - LTE speeds on the Sense rom blew away the GE rom, same exact location yielded almost 50% increase
in speed on ATT using speedtest.net.
I am glad I did the trial so I would not wonder how the GE rom would perform.
I did manage to get my 64 gb. Developer Edition back to Stock. I am S-off, unlocked, and super CID. I am a happy camper.
CC
If I didn't already have the ATT version I would probably opt for the GE version. I have been running the GE ROM since the first one was cooked up the day after the GPe's went on sale. I just love the look and feel of it, and there isn't anything I really miss about SENSE. I will tell you that Sense 5 is by far and away the best manufacturer skin/overlay I have ever used. It is light and fluent and it's much better to look at than TOUCHWIZ. The post above me stated many compelling reasons to stick with Sense, but for me personally I am happy on the GE ROM. I was perfectly happy before the GE version was even announced and I could be just as happy running Sense 5 permanently.
I noticed that anyone that already has seen the nexus experience, is kinda happy to see the change and likes sense. Personally I am an example of it. Went from the n4 to this, and I didn't even feel the need to root this unroll like the 4th day of owning it. Usually I do it the first few hours.

Google edition for me. I actually ordered one, but when I saw how long it would take to get it, and since I had an upgrade, I just cancelled, ordered one from ATT, and flashed the google edition rom.
I just like vanilla a lot more than any skin.
Sense sucks. I despise it. But too many of this phone's features rely on it. So I continue to use it.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
For the first time, I actually like using a OEM skin, Sense 5 is great, I'm probably flashing a new ROM every day since I can't decide.
I switched over to the GE ROM. Having used Cyanogenmod for the past two years or so, I've grown accustomed to vanilla Android, and much prefer its aesthetics and familiarity (even if it's missing the CM tweaks.) As far as Sense goes, I did not find myself fully exploiting it while I used it; some features not even being used once (Blinkfeed, highlights.) Using Zoe felt foreign to me. Other aspects of the UI felt too busy for me. Didn't like the white menus and the font. Aside from this, I liked Sense as much as the next person. I liked the way the camera app was setup, and preferred the stock web browser over Chrome.
In my experience so far, the GE ROM performs just a touch better if, for any reason, its better app integration. For example, Poweramp's lock screen overlay would sometimes not show up on Sense, and a number of one-button headsets wouldn't properly control the app. Both of these features are fully operational on the GE ROM. Another example; Chrome performs noticeably better on the GE ROM (smoother scrolling, on par with the stock Sense browser.)
On the downside, I do not care for the GE camera at all -- especially its UI. It performs up to snuff, but seems to lose its footing in extremely low light situations, unlike the Sense camera. The GE camera opts for flash much more often, as well.
Finally, I should add that I get better battery life on the GE ROM.
At the end of the day, for a device I typically interact with for 45 seconds at a time, I'd rather be using the GE ROM over Sense. I really think a lot of it just comes down to the familiarity.
i prefer sense style and apps, google edition look very poor. :S
I'm glad someone started a thread like this.
I've always hated Sense (since the Windows Mobile days!). Every time I bought a new HTC the first thing I did was see if a AOSP rom was available for it. I just didn't like how ugly the UI was and how sluggish it made the phone feel. AOSP just seemed simpler, faster, and cleaner. Minimalism is my thing.
When I got the HTC One the first thing I did was change the launcher and tried to get the UI to look as close to AOSP as possible. I didn't even give Blinkfeed a chance. In my head it was gonna be just like the other bloated crap HTC put on their phones. The camera was nice and took decent pictures. I didn't care too much about Zoe's mostly because I just didn't see the hype surrounding it, but maybe I'm using wrong lol. The speakers are awesome.
Then the GE ROMs came into play. I was so excited I could barely contain myself. I flashed the GE ROM and instantly loved it. I had it for about a week or two. I then started to miss the camera from Sense, and the audio, and the power saver feature, and the gallery. I loved the GE ROM and it's minimalism, but I felt that my phone wasn't being used to its full potential. So, I gave myself a challenge. I was going to flash back to a Sense ROM for a week and use it as HTC had intended. Well, a week had gone by and I still have a Sense ROM. I actually love it! Blinkfeed is very handy. All of the HTC apps are actually really useful. I find myself using my phone a lot more now. I think I'm just gonna stick with Sense for a while.
I'm using the GE ROM right now but once I saw there was an Android Revolution ROM I instantly downloaded it and made a backup of GE. I've been on a Nexus S for a while and I'm starting to get bored of the AOSP look and feel. At least until the new version is out.
I prefer Sense, but I just wish some things were done differently, especially on the UI front. For example, I wish that the dock on the homescreens was the same as the one in the lock screen, instead of having that hideous black background. Also, they need to better optimize it for high pixel density screens; everything looks too big, especially the menu bar! Speaking of menu bar, why did they change the notification shade to fully black, instead of the see through AOSP one? I definitely prefer the AOSP gallery app and its better Picasa/G+ integration, so I'm running stock Sense, with the AOSP camera/gallery app apk installed, so I can choose whichever one I want I love Sense music player, especially the karaoke mode! Overall, is say that Sense I'd better for me, especially UI issues aside, I can't think of anything that AOSP does better.
I love HTC Sense5 more than Google Edition, because the BlinkFeed is very friendly for me,
it can show me lots of information in the same time.
Went from sense to GP edition with logo as recent apps. Its just absolutely no contestb I don't miss a single thing.

I brought the sense version and used that for a while and didn't mind it, but last weekend I did the conversion to the Google Edition and it's great, I do miss the highlights and blinkfeed, but I have been using flipboard which is much better than blinkfeed and the google look feels less heavy than the sense rom lol if you know what I mean. Most people don't like the google camera app but funny enough I actually like it lol.

My issue is the software, is it that bad out of the box say versus a Nexus 4 running on pure Android? Havent played around with custom ROMs but thinking I might have to with this device.

Im coming from the GNex- which was a pure android experience to the LG G2- and in my opinion the software is fine. I had to apply a theme, which was super easy to get it to look the way I like: but the software doesn't get in my way. the phone is SO customizable that you can make it how you like. The phone is butter smooth and work great for me. I dislike only 2-3 minor things about the phone which can be fixed...
I'm running it stock: no root

I was used to running cm 10.2 on my lg g pro (the g2 is so much better imo) and the software is fine. I just flashed clean rom and a mod to get rid of the at&t logo and phone volume slider and I can't be happier. I also got rid of the soft buttons and use GMD, I almost never touch the back buttons with the knock on and made nova launcher double tap to lock. Pretty freaking awesome.

Came from GNex with AOSP ROM and I think LGs ROM is okay. I was expecting worse, but it's not terrible. There is way too much bloat (Verizon), but I will most definitely be install a custom ROM as soon as AOSP ROMs hit the grid. I do like the knock on feature and some other stuff they baked in though.
I have a few apps out of the box that are draining my battery at idle which I will have to figure out.

might help http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2456974
It's not that bad at all. Certainly better than Touchwiz. I actually like this LG UI more than any I've used outside of some of the modded AOSP ROMS (CM, AOKP, PA etc.). It has a few quirks, but nothing that I would consider to be a deal breaker.
I ran tw I ran aokp, I ran cm plus a multitude of kangs of all three including miui.
I am 5 days in and not once got bored, glitches, battery drains. Its got all the customazions I need, except dpi and permissions. I am cured flashaholic. That says a lot about the software coming from an avid flasher
I have been a big fan of cm for some time now and love the stock android look. I may very well install a theme to get this look at some point but I see no real reason to flash or even root at this point.
The software is smooth and customizable. It is heavily skinned in a love it or hate it kind of way, but themes make it far less of an issue.
Hope this helps!

so no thesoftware is not bad
I like it, it's smooth unlike touchwiz and mostly everything can be changed. Refreshing.

Came from a nexus 4 and I love the software.
My only wish is that I want more multitasking stuff (like TW's mutiwindow just without the bloat )
yeah multitasking is android 8ssue they implemented window support on an app per app and not os wide basis, thats why not all aps are launchable that way
The LG skin/software is awesome. I really like it. Its fast, fluid, and has many features. example: theme keyboard, theme ui keys, nav ring shortcuts, pop up windows for text and phone calls, etc..
With the nexus 5 predicted to have a 2300mAh battery and a worse camera at £399 it's a cracking deal for the LG G2. I work at 3 and am tempted to take up the deal.

The skin is more that adequate for anything you want to do. this isnt 2010 where htc sense and samsungs stuff blew ****. everything is great. whether it is motorola or sony's or whoever, they are all fine....
I hate that stock android is taken to the point of god like. its good. just like sense. or touchwiz. stock isnt better than either of them. they will all do the samething. in fact, often these skins on top have more options and are a fresh breath of air from stock
No I love the software on the g2. I had 2 s4's and both lagged and didn't run as well as I wanted it too. Great processor but software bogged it down. I like this phone so far for its software and its beautiful screen. Samsung threw whatever they thought up into tw and it was a lot of junk I personally didn't use nor anyone that I know personally
