[Q] Charger types - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Can anyone tell me with total certainty if the S3 and S4 mains chargers are interchangeable with either device without long term damage? My S3 charger delivers 0.7A and my S4 charger delivers 2.0A
Obviously I have loads of S3 chargers and don't want to fork out for more for the S4 - would the S3 charger just charge the S4 slower? Would using the S4 charger damage the S3? I still need to use both phones (work/home)
Thanks!
Paul

Yes, the S3 charger will just charge the S4 at about 1/3 the speed of the S4 charger. Otherwise, it's fine.

Thanks, I would expect that really but how about the other way around? Does anyone know what the max charge rate is for the S3? If I plug the S4 charger in it provides 2A is this too much for the S3? I have looked around and can't find any max charge rates :s

Well you should test it out, have a battery app or widget on the S3 and charge it with the S4 charger. If it gets too hot, then its best to stick with the S3 charger.

No, I think stuartv is making joke. With different currency, I think you can not use S3 charger to charge S4.

No, it's not a different current, it's just different power with the same voltage. Therefore, both chargers are interchangeable and it won't break any phone, no worries. If the S3 can't drain 2W (I don't know if it can), it'll just drain less.

ah you mean the phone draws the power rather than the adapter pushing the power through the circuit?

Charging any battery at a higher current will shorten the life of the battery, only sightly at those levels though, and vise versa charging at lowers currents will increase the life of the battery

charging note with 0.7A instead of 1.0A

I've got my note today and the charger has output 5V and 1.0A
My galaxy s charger has 5V and 0.7A
Can I charge the galaxy note with the galaxy s charger? I know it will take longer but beside the charging time is there any other downside? can i damage my battery?
thx for help
I think you might mess up your battery stats if you used the galaxy s one first, but i think if you do the first 5 chargers from flat to 100% to get them right no reason why you couldn't use the galaxy s one. After all usb charging is slightly less output than mains.
thx alex

Using Nexus 7 charger to charge mobile phones?

Hi,
Nexus 7 charger ouputs 2A.
Is it safe and ok to use it to charge Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and HTC Desire?
I am thinking more in the long run, if it does not brake the phones.
Thanks
It should not hurt anything. My daughter charges her Droid 4 with my charger every day.
It'll charge it really slow since phone chargers are 1A. Everyone will have their opinion on this but my opinion is I wouldn't use a phone charger on the N7....it could over heat due to it charging slow. But I'm sure you'll hear others saying a slow charge is better so....

Yup, it's fine, because a standard charger is, or used to be, 500 mAh, at 5 volts.
Some chargers are more mAh, like 700, and some are even 1 A.
If a charger is 2A, and your phone only draws 500 mAh, that is perfectly fine, because it's only drawing a quarter of what the charger can produce. In this case, the charger probably won't even get warm.
Neither my Sensation nor my wife's Sensation XL has died yet from using the Nexus charger
What mvmacd says is correct - just because the charger can supply 2A, it is the device that decides how much current it draws from the charger.

I actually find the charger that came with my razr does the job fine and its rated at 850ma. Other lower power chargers i have are slow though.
I doubt a slow charge would lead to overheating or else connecting to a pc would cause this too.
I think for chargers its a case of trying them to see how well they work.

Science proves other than your opinion. A too-low or too high max voltage or amperage charger can and will lead to overheating and severe reduction on battery life and can destroy the adapter as well.

Care to explain why Google says you can charge your device with a 500 mAh charger [standard USB port]? ["with the screen off"]
Won't it severely reduce battery life and burn out the motherboard of the USB? Oh, really? Google just forgot about that part when they were writing the instruction manual?

Modern devices and chargers shouldn't have this problem because of built-in regulators. A smartphone won't try to draw more than it can handle and chargers won't try to supply more than they can handle (unless they're very cheap).
I have been N7 charger on phone with no problem so far. I wonder about the statement about the phone not drawing more than it needs though. I replaced the battery in my TB after 9 months due to low life and swelling. I'm pretty sure the swelling came from leaving the phone on a car charger all day, even after the battery was full. If my phone had the ability to stop taking the charge it didn't need, this wouldn't happen...

My opinion still stands....I don't trust using anything other than the charger that came with the device. 6th post down makes perfect sense to me.

If the phones also charge at 2A then you should be fine. If the phones charge at lower amps (say 1A or 1.5A) then I wouldn't recommend using it everyday as it may reduce the battery efficiency. If it's an emergency go ahead and use it.
There's no harm in using a higher current charger with a lower current phone because the charger is not what's actually charging the battery, it's the phone, and the phone will limit the charging current. You can confirm this with a multimeter. The charger can't force the phone to draw more current than it was designed for. This would be different if you were charging the battery directly with a dedicated charger because then the charger itself is directly controlling the charging current.

Hi,

Mine is 2 to 2 and a half hours.
Which battery and/or charger are you using? After coming from the S2 I have noticed a large decrease in charging time with my S4, so this is very surprising to me.

...*facepalm*. You're not using original charger and you're complain that the one you use doens't works so well? Do you know that original charger is pulling 2000mA out, while your usb-port is pulling between 300mA and 500mA (depends if it front or back usb-port and the quality of usb port). Do the math, 2600mAh battery and 300mA / h. Full charge should take: 2600:300 = more than 8.5 hours.
With original charger S4 recharges from 0 to 100 in 1h 49minutes. If you take a solar charger it will charge even slower (like 48 hours for 0-100%).
Next time try to use your brain before complaining.

Your Samsung power brick has the cable physically attached to it? If not, you can just use a longer cable with the Samsung power supply.
The included power supply is 2 Amps, whoever is getting long charging times, make sure you use either the original Samsung power supply, or comparable in amperage supply.
Mine charges in 2 and a half hours.
Mine takes 2 to 2.5 h to charge from 0 to 100 percent. You should only use the new white charger, it's more powerful than the black one from s3, it's output is 2.0A ,old one is only 1.0A. Newer use other chargers as they may mess up your battery or phone.

Is it safe to get a higher Amp charger, the one that the iPad uses to charge my S4? No drawback execpt for a faster charging time right?

Take it this way, grilling meat takes for example 45minutes to cook completely. You take it to some powerful furnace like 2000degrees for 5minutes then what do you expect from it to give you back? Well cooked meat or some burned meat outside and maybe raw inside?

put it this way... the s3 comes with a 700ma charger. it charges a bit slow. and has a 2100mah battery.
the s4 comes with a 2 amp charger. thats 2000ma. it doesnt charge slowly if you use this charger. i personally am going to pop it on this charger when i get home from work and then keep it on my 700ma charger overnight... no reason to waste that powerful output, it will simply waste electricity.
make sure:
1. you use the charger that came with it
2. you use a cable thats as long as (or shorter than) the stock charging cable. longer usb cables tend to charge the phone slower.
also keep in mind usb ports charge any phone slowly. the s4 will charge even slower on them because the battery is oversized compared to most.
I'm using note 2 charger and if I surf Web while charging, literally it is not charging at all.. battery is not going up or down.. Note 2 was not like this.. i could charge battery even if I play 3d game..

the oem charger is 2A, charges very fast. if you use just any micro usb charger, it will probably take forever because that charger has lower output.
That's interesting, because I noticed mine charges way faster than my GS2 did, and with a much higher capacity battery.
With the charger that came with the phone, and I start my charge at 3% turn the phone off and charge to 100%. I notice it does charge faster. Alot faster then my gs3 did with a smaller battery. I did a side by side comparison.
I noticed the new white cord with the gs4 is thicker then the gs3

I'm wondering what repricussions I can have if I add 2A charger to the mix and will charge old devices with 2A charger and vice a versa charge S4 with 1A?

It will be fine, I charge all my devices from my ipad 3 10W/2A @5V wall charger. Bringing one charger while travelling reduces the clutter I have to pack.
Basically if your devices are working properly, they will only pull the power they need to charge. The S4's 2A charger is capable of supplying up to 2A's but is fine supplying less if the device your charging uses less.
The actuall charging circuitry that controls the battery charging is in the phone or device, not the wall unit. The wall unit is simply the power supply.
As acruxksa mentioned, you'll be fine since the device is in control of how much power it pulls from the charger (as long as it is working properly, that is). The only thing that you may notice is when you are charging the Galaxy S4 with the older 1.0A charger it may charge slower.
Have a great day.

And if in doubt, look at it this way; the phones will charge off a USB port on a computer - this is 500ma (0.5A) - so as long as your device will charge off a usb port, it will charge off a wall charger that supplies at least that much amperage. New iPads will not charge off USB ports, but it doesn't hurt them to plug them in.

Yes it does but as the previous reply said it takes longer.
I used the old s3 cable at the office charging s4 but it takes long time to get the battery % up. It usually takes my s4 from 1% to 100% within an hour and half time but with the s3 cable it takes good 3 -4 hour or so.
I wouldn't take the s3 cable for travelling though. it will take too long for me to charge in coffee shops and what not when I am moving around the destinations.
So far, I am very impressed with the charging time of S4.. Love the device.

I don't understand why all current control is on device itself why not manufacturers just suppl 3A chargers for all the phones since it can be used for any device out there.

Good question. Maybe because the higher amp batteries have not been out that long compared to all the years smartphones have been sold. They may start making 3A only. Also, companies may sell less chargers if one size fits all. No need to buy a new one when you change phones.
I do know when I charge the S4 with my One S charger it does take longer, as mentioned, and very slow off USB. The One S charger end also gets somewhat warm charging the S4. The S4 charger does not. That would lead me to believe it is pulling a little more current than charger was designed for. But, probably not an issue. USB does not get warm. But, is a good quality one and heavily shielded.

In case someone buys a 10amp cheap charger and ends up frying the phone. Thus Samsung protects it self from dummy users and from million dead phones warranty swaps.
I'm using a USB car charger that puts out 2.1amps and its super fast. USB 2.0 on my laptop takes a while to charge it. Some times I use iPhone charger with Nokia cable or with WD hard drive USB wire. They all work just fine but charge at different rate.

so if i will charge my S3 with a 2A charger i wont see any major change from the 1A, correct? I have the Boeffala kernel and at the AC charge is set to 1,1A so if i have a 2A charger i guess it should charge faster.
The phone will only draw the maximum it can. The 2A charger will charge it at the same speed as the 1A charger.

Maybe it is a placebo effect, but when I charge my S3 with my S4's charger it does seem faster. Quite a few of my coworkers that have used my S4 charger at work also thought it charged faster.
