Galaxy s4 screen throttling - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Anyone notice throttling on the screen in terms of contrast tone and brightness. You cannot turn it off no matter what settings you choose. One good example is when you pull up the keyboard and the brightness is fairly low, there's a huge color shift that pops up till the keyboard tray is gone again. Could a kernel fix this?

i am trying to get some help from international model guys on this; mine DOES NOT change contrast and brightness if i disable every auto feature AND ALL POWER SAVING features. I have seen this on another GS4 and not on my own or my GF's with everything disabled. I wonder if there is a difference in screens or part batches and sensitivity or a different controller chip; another thing im looking into.
also the ambient light sensor; try covering it completely. i think that and the 'auto detect/modify screen contrast/colors' is running no matter what on certain GS4's.

Yeah I've tried it all seems like its at the kernel level. I've had 3 galaxy s4s and they've all done it...

I'm sure someone will make a kernel that fixes these weird quirks that only I seem to notice lol

i have calibrated many monitors before; maybe when the bootloader is unlocked and there is a full ROM dump someone could assist me to find the screen calibration adjustments so i can create a professional AdobeRGB and sRGB profile for the screen as well as rec 709 full and 16-235 video modes etc. I am not the only one interested in this; the Galaxy S III, Note II, and Google Nexus 7 are all excellent candidates for field monitors with excellent gamut. I just want mine to display colors as accurately as is possible for the moment; i keep all my demo reel footage and music videos i shot on it; a proper 'flat' image is important before editing, and my company we shoot raw, yet even a simple 8 bit example of before/after editing in raw environment would help our clients.
This is the first mobile full HD screen capable of such broadcast range of gamut; would be incredible to use as proper field monitor with correct calibrations.

CM9 devs and users attention please! Severe clipping in CM9 based ROMS

I have installed Paranoid Android on my Note and noticed that there is severe clipping in the CM9 UI elements. Even the default ICS wallpaper , the one with the"rainbow" coloing stripes show severe clipping on the lockscreen. It looks just plain ugly. And since most of the CM9 UI backgrounds are a shade of grey, there is severe clipping of these grey elements to a purplish pixellation and to black. You can notice this if you take the settings page in Paranoid android or any other CM9 based ROM (assuming most CM9 based ROMS have the same default theme) Look under the status bar where the grey background fades to black and you may notice severe pixellation like issues at that area. Now, go to advanced, screen settings and MDNIE mode, you will notice that the clipping keeps changing when changing modes but its still there in every screen mode.
How many of you are experiencing this? Assuming a majority of the people who run Custom ROMS run a CM9 based ROM, why isnt this issue reported anywhere? I'm asking because, the issue is plainly visible in these grey areas and UI elements making the visual experience really bad. And why is Gamma Control disabled in these CM9 kernels? I believe lowering the gamma would solve the problem.
I've noticed that CM9 kernels have the worst clipping whereas in other stock based kernels, the clipping is comparitively lower, closer to the stock kernels.
So once again users of CM9, please do report if you face this issue.
CM9 users please report back because I havent seen anybody talking about this issue in any of the CM9 related ROMS thread. People seem to ignore an issue which stares back right at the face even in ambient lighting. Why havent this been reported?
I dont have much idea about who develops CM9 kernels for the note. How can we contact the CM9 developers and let them know of this issue and request to enable Gamma Control within the kernel?
Somebody please help me out here. Because its been a month after I bought my note and I've been struggling and doing my best to find a solution to this horrible clipping. I had got in touch with GSMArena and got this issue published, yet Samsung never responded, I tried kernel after kernel and realised that the intensity of the issue varies from kernel to kernel. I've seen that whomever I ask about the clipping in this forum says they have it but then everyone seems to be happy running different ROMS and in these CM9 based ROMs which look as close to stock Google ICS UI have severe clipping all over the UI and yet people dont seem to bother.
So what can I conclude from this? Is this an isolated issue or are all of you Note users who have this issue just keeping silent and living with it?
I do not mean to spoil anybody's peace or anything. I clearly dont know how to get in touch with the CM9 devs for the Note, somebody help me if possible. And if you feel that this is an isolated issue, do let me know otherwise. Because, when the basic UI shows severe clipping, the whole user experience is spoiled and nobody wants to live in fear with bright UI elements and bright wallpapers dreading the clipping if anything at all has to be dark. We paid a premium for this device and even Samsung seems to ignore. I have the SGS3 and there is no clipping on it but just that everything seems darker on the GS3 when compared to the Note. This alone shows that Gamma is a culprit here and I could just sell away my Note and just live with the GS3. But that doesn't help anybody who is facing this issue and wants to see a solution. Even I personally like the note more than the GS3 and I want to keep it but for this issue. Not everybody has the money to jump to the next flagship every now and then and for the people who spent their money on the Note doesn't have to "live with it" just because they decided to buy it without knowing such an issue existed. Not every store lets you try and trial their devices before buying them.
Samsung has even seemed to ignore the EMMC issue even after claiming they are "working on it" I dont see anything productive from Samsung's side as even a device which was previously unaffected had the affected kernels pushed to it via an update. So basically if it was not for people like Entropy who works day and night for that issue, Samsung could keep replacing motherboards for every random wipe a user does. They basically want to sell the note until the Note 2 and then this wouldn't be their problem anymore. Problems like the emmc bug is a MISTAKE from Samsung's part and they should be ready to repair devices even beyond warranty as the user may have only done the most harmless thing, i.e to reset the device to factory settings.
So, coming back to topic, how do we get in touch with the CM9 devs and enable gamma control on these ROMs? Most ROMS have gamma control under MDNIE settings which is greyed out, most probably because the kernel doesnt support it. This is the best I can do for the people who are affected by the clipping issue as I'm not a developer. This issue isnt an isolated case in my opinion and affects every Note I've got a chance to see.
It might help if you actually posted requests in the cm9 discussion thread? #commonsense

Yeah. OP is TL;DR complaining about some "severe" issue I've never seen and no one else has.
As to gamma control being disabled - I should remove that from the settings app, as that's something supported by the I9100/I777 display driver but not ours.

Oops..I'm sorry for the long post. Its basically about the severe "black clipping" which has been affecting the Note since release. This issue is best seen when displaying dark shadows in images and videos. There were many threads discussing this issue. And GSMArena had published this issue in their news after I mailed them about the same.
What I wanted to tell was, I feel this is caused by the Note's screen having the gamma cranked up quite high and I believe lowering the gamma would resolve this issue.
The default CM9 theme shows severe clipping in backgrounds and UI elements. All the grey backgrounds, (the default theme) clip to black just below the status bar.
Even all the videos which have dark shadows are totally blocky due to this and the clipping makes them literally unwatchable.
I had reported this issue to GSMArena
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_plagued_by_display_issues-news-4513.php
I wanted the Gamma Control feature which is presently disabled to be enabled in the CM9 kernels so that we can tune down the Gamma to eliminate this clipping
The same issues existed on the GNexus and was fixed with the Lean Kernel which had Gamma Tuning.
So once again, in short, I'm talking about the "Black clipping\crush" on the Note when displaying darker shades of colours.
All the notes have this problem, and we need to access to gamma control but as supercurio said it won't solve all the problems of the black clipping and banding issues

Satishp, i know what are you talking about. Just take a picture of your note and post it here. Of course, you won't use a screenshot feature but a camera.
I sold my note bc of the black clipping issue, but now I cannot buy an s3 or HoX cause their screens are just to small, that is, narrow. Gonna buy Note again and hope some solution will come out. It is too bad to buy a phone for its screen and get a crappy quality. Issue on s3 is solved with lowered gamma. Comparing with the Note, s3 has much darker screen. Sometimes too much.

All of the speculation and misinformation of this issue is really starting to get frustrating. First, the issue IS with the hardware. It may be possible to reduce it's impact using software but the fact remains this is a hardware issue. How do I know? I have replaced my Note's screen and the newer screen I have isn't as good as the old one.
The new one isn't awful, it simply isn't as good as the other.
2nd point - everyone will have this issue. It is simply an inherent problem with the screen hardware and it is completely implausible that there are 1 or 2 'perfect' screens out there. There will simply be variations. Some people WILL have better screens than others. For some people the issue may be completely unnoticeable and for others it will be glaringly obvious. Don't judge or hate on people because their screen is worse than yours and vice versa.
3rd the issue is MORE noticeable at lower brightness values than high brightness values. If you have your note on higher brightness values then you're unlikely to notice it. In my case, I can not see any clipping if I am in a lit room. The only time I can see it is when I'm sat in the dark with very low brightness. As I said above this will vary from person to person.
I have attached 2 photos below. One is a normal exposure where you can see the clipping is hard to see. Another is a long exposure which amplifies the issue more and makes it more noticeable (I used a longer exposure on my camera to show this). Fortunately it isn't so bad for me, but for some people my long exposure image is the reality unfortunately.
Standard: http://i48.tinypic.com/4uxnia.jpg
Long Exposure: http://i48.tinypic.com/5akew3.jpg
Why have we got a clipping problem and can software solve it? I believe it is highly unlikely that this issue can be solvable. I also think the issue stems from one simple shortcoming to the screen; the minimum brightness achievable per pixel. The problem is the jump from this minimum brightness to the 'off' (perfectly black) pixel is too great. There is no transition. Can gamma control solve this? I'm not convinced. I think the issue is more to do with what the lowest pixel brightness the screen is capable of. For the poorer people this minimum brightness will be quite bright. For others the minimum brightness will be lower.
If any devs know of a way of controlling pixel brightness on a level where it can be noticeably changed and if it is possible to reduce this minimum brightness then sure, it would certainly be a possibility. But I don't think this is possible.
Part of this might be a limitation of the HD Pentile AMOLED technology. But if you notice, both the Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy S3 share the same technology. For people who argue that the S3 uses a different manufacturing procedure, Samsung has no where mentioned this and its just an assumption.
The GNexus had the same issue but was solved with the LEAN kernel which implemented a gamma control within the kernel. If you've seen the S3's screen ( I own an S3 too, So I've spent a good time comparing), you will notice that the S3's screen is visibly darker than the Note's screen. Images tend to look darker and this shows that the S3's screen has its gamma set to a lower value which eliminates the clipping.
More proof for you, lets take the gammatest image and view it on our PC. Most PCs use an LCD display and still you can see the greys gradually fading to black.
Now increase the gamma of your display from your display adapter's color settings and view the same image again. You will see that you can see all the way upto 1 and then black just like how the image is displayed by the note.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1800117
Now view a 720p or 1080p clip on your PC with the gamma values still high, you will see the clipping in every dark scene. Try it yourself.
This shows that gamma calibration can correct the issue to atleast some extent.
Hmm. There appears to be truth in what you say. Unfortunately the Note is lacking somewhat in the developer department. And the few devs there are have other pressing issues to deal with so the question becomes who can implement gamma control on the Note?

I have the clipping regardless of which mode I put it in, apart from the clipping the screen is mint, which makes me even more pissed off when I watch a movie and a dark scene comes on, then the shade between black and grey turns into a lego block mess. I really cant beleive so many people are happy with it, half of u guys must be blind, I exchanged my Note twice, tested my cousins and my bosses Notes, all have the exact same problem. I even bluetoothed the gamma test image to a few in carphone warehouse , same with them, even the samsung rep I spoke to over the phone said the one they have in the office also has the issue. Total crap imo, Samsung total FAIL.

Please take a picture if your note displaying the gamma test image (blocks numbered 1 to 20) with stock gallery app in a dark room, screen mode dynamic, max brightnes with auto adjust switched off, I bet number 4 is light grey, then number 3 is black, if so your device has black clipping. There should be no abrupt drop from grey to black, it should be a gentle fade.
Thanks.

Poor Samsung. First, everyone *****ed about the panning box they used to allow you to move through a note you're working on. Then, they changed it and replaced it with a scroll bar and people are *****ing about that too. I don't know which version of S-Note you're on but in the version included in JB with "only recognize the S-Pen" enabled it's really really hard to inadvertantly hit the scroll bars so maybe that'll solve your problem. As for the brightness being ramped up in S-Note I get the logic and it shows how much they think about how people use their devices and apps. If you think about, since the Note's a drawing device, people could be using it at any angle and in any position. Disabling auto-brightness kind of makes sense so that the screen doesn't fade in and out if someone's hand is over the ambient light sensor. Oh well, you can't please all the people all the time.

Doesn't mean that you can't flash another rom...
I don't use autobrightness so it changing the levels drives me absolutely nuts. E.g. I'm working in a dark room so have the level turned down to what suits me best. I open snoteb and up it goes. I turn it back down manually, jump to another app for a moment for whatever reason, say to read some info in a pdf, switch back to snote and, bam, blinded again.
There's a reason why autobrightness can be toggled on and off, and one app ignoring that convention is infuriating.
actually if you use autobrightness, the brightness levels still change
"Disabling auto-brightness kind of makes sense so that the screen doesn't fade in and out if someone's hand is over the ambient light sensor. Oh well, you can't please all the people all the time."
If this is the case, then there are definitely better solutions than the one Samsung implemented. For example, putting a timer on the ambient light sensor so it doesn't react to accidentally being covered up. If it's only briefly covered up, the brightness won't change. If it's really in a dark room and sensing low light with no interruption for say 1 minute, then change the brightness.
So, it's hard to believe that Samsung would make SNote change the brightness autmoatically as a "feature". Samsung makes great products, but we dont have to idolize them the way that iOS Sheep idolize Apple.

If you're referring to me I chose the Teg3 One X over the SGS3 and am very happy with my choice. Here's a demonstration of my lack of idolization. In JB, putting the multiview selector to the right of the more important and more often used "settings" selector wasn't very well thought out from a usability perspective.
S-Note turning up the brightness works fine for me and I kind of like it since auto-brightness tends to be on the dim side normally. I'd probably like it less if I frequently took notes in a dark room which I don't. I don't assume everyone uses their device like I do so I certainly wouldn't invoke my opinion of a feature on others.
This is why I use lecture notes.

You can't upgrade or downgrade S-Note with just the single APK. There are supporting files that have to be changed along with it. When PDF import was borked on some versions of S-Note folks tried to update it with a newer version of the APK alone and it failed.

Yes they can, they can let us make up our own mind as to what level of brightness we want, the same as we do with every other app. Why bother having a brightness setting at all if that's the case, just get rid of it entirely as they know better.

[Q] Galaxy S4 Screen dimming.

I got my Galaxy S4 yesterday and noticed even after i turned auto brightness off, Set my screen to dynamic, the screen still changes brightness levels when entering the Chrome web browser (gets dimmer), playing some video games (screen get brighter) and other various tasks.
I am not a noob, I've gone through the phones settings for each app and cannot find a fix, do you guys notice your phones doing the same thing?? I might be a slight change in brightness level but non the less i like my screen extremely bright this is just my preference.
Any thoughts, ideas, tweaks or feedback on how to resolve this issue??

The only time I've seen this happen since I've gotten the device is when the battery dropped below 5%, and it automatically adjusted the brightness to seemingly the lowest it could go, and stuck until I charged it to full again.
I blame it on Samsung's stockware.
maybe this is why i couldnt get the phone to look as bright as my note 2. i was using the browser and cnn.com to compare.. my note 2 screen was brighter with both phones brightness on max.

Just throwing this out there...the screen does dim about 10 seconds before the screen times out and turns off...even if you have automatic brightness disabled.
Let's say you have a 1 minute timeout:
Screen on
50 seconds later screen dims
10 seconds later screen turns off
Just putting that out there in case - it is confusing to some.

I'm sure it has to do with preventing burn in. You probably already know this, but in the right conditions, the Auto brightness setting can get over 30% brighter than manually maxing the slider. Hopefully, it's something that can be unlocked at some point.

This happened in the S4s I used in the store as well. Manual brightness, and auto screen adjust disabled, power save off. Opening certain apps like chrome and the stock browser causes the screen to dim a bit. Nothing I found prevented this behavior. It's annoying since I already find the screen to be a bit dim.

Its built into the Snapdragon, its called BRITE and seems works independantly of the auto screen tuning that the S4 has. The HTC One has it and its much more intrusive. I wrote a long winded post about it in the HTC One forums. You have to wait for devs to come out with kernels to disable it, much like they did for the Tegra 3
The HTC screen is bright enough that it doesn't matter. Samsung phones need to be at max brightness to be any good.

Just an FYI, if you put the screen on auto brightness, it reaches a higher maximum brightness outdoors as apposed to the slider. Samsung did this to keep the screen from overheating when set to max all the time.

Screen flickering in direct sunlight?

Hello,
I picked up my GS4 about a week ago but haven't really used it in direct sunlight until today. I was outside, and the sun was shining brightly on the screen. Home screen was fine, and darker images were ok, but if I were to go to an app with a primarily white background, or open up something which used the keyboard (texting) the screen would flicker pretty noticeably. Brightness is all the way up, and auto tone was off.
Has anyone else seen this?
yup this is normal esp when using the keyboard.
Im not sure if it will be fixed.

I guess my question is, is this a hardware issue with many GS4's or a minority. I came across a thread on the Tmobile GS4 forum where people were experiencing it, but it seems not everyone is.

Its a hardware thing, but also its only in touchwiz so a developer might be able to turn it off so to speak.
It adjusts the color and tone no matter what to save the display from overheating and or burning in...
Does it a lot and I notice it cause im weird about those kinds of things.
If you use CM 10.1 or AOKP its gone.
ive made some progress with the RGB light meter on this; hoping a friend can write up some code so we can test out a 'smoothed out' transition and sampling rate and one that is sped up, averaged faster, but will take up more CPU and RAM and battery but more accurate.
here is another thread regarding it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280715
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284726
Maybe if someone who is using CM10 or AOKP could test it to see if it is a software issues and not a hardware issue?
edit: slade and jet replied while I was writing this...thanks for the info. looks like it is touchwiz related.
edit2: just went out in the sun again to test a lot of different options in the display settings (which none worked) but is seems it is only happening when the keyboard is enabled. I am using swiftkey.
yeah TW and that sensor communicate; i believe the sensor itself probably works better ALONE, but TW changes it and throttles it for either battery or screen safety.
It is always dependent on what is being pulled up on the screen, though it can be mitigated quite a bit if you disable all power saving and screen auto features, and leave brightness under 80% or so.
yea anything under 80% in direct sun is basically black. all power saving and screen auto modes were disabled. i covered up all of the sensors too and it still flickered....

Not just a sensor thing per-say.
It's hard to explain, they most likely did it because they didn't want the amoled to burn in.
Its the same reason why the brightness goes up another 34% or so on auto above the max brightness. Only uses it when needed to save the screen and battery.
Does it on youtube too btw, bring up a video on wide screen then tap it and you'll see the drastic color shift
I noticed this thing when I got my phone also. I thought I was just imagining it but I guess it's an actual problem

Seriously its about power handling/battery saving and white balance, but its noticeable, and annoying.

No that's not possible, its hard coded into touchwiz, this isn't a bug or anything...
If people say they don't have it; they're not noticing it.

Thought my eyes were going crazy. Mine does this too. It even did it once under some fluorescent lights. It's not annoying enough to matter but it would be cool if it gets fixed.

Dimming the display to reduce over heating?

Alright so I just got my Note 3 here in Canada (SM-N900W8) and whenever I download an app from the Play store, or do anything I would normally do on a S4 or HTC One, the phone lowers the screen brightness (usually keep it on full brightness). When I go into Settings > Display > Brightness, it says something along the lines of to ensure your phone doesn't over heat, your phone's brightness has been lowered. Now, I've noticed this happen a handful of times, and I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem?
I don't think the phone should be doing that over simple task like downloading apps. Might want to take it back asap and exchange for a new one.

Yes, mine is doing the same exact thing. When it first started happening, I thought there was something wrong with this particular phone but then I saw that same message. It's annoying have the screen change brightness like that.
I notice when browsing web page it does it too.. can anyone else confirm? Test by turning your brightness all the way, then download a few apps and browse the web. Let me know.
same experience
Hi! Very new at this forum. Just searched the net because of the same problem. The screen keeps dimming even if im using it. I thought it was a problem so I had my unit replaced. I have a new one now but it still does the same thing. It still dims randomly. Now I dont know if I should have another replacement or if this is normal.

I think the dimming may be caused by settings>device>display>auto adjust screen tones. And/or screen mode check anything but adapt mode. .. That solved it for me.

This fix it for everyone? Kinda nervous about this....
It won't hurt anything, it's just a device setting. You can always change it back. ..

And here's the link to that thread... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382134
I haven't got the Note 3 yet partly because of this. When I compared my Note 2 to the Note 3 in the At&t store I noticed the Note 3 was definitely not as bright, while being obviously bluer. But I also caught it dimming itself too, very quickly but couldn't get it to reproduce the behavior. Changing the display mode didn't affect any of this. I've wanted to see this amazing improved display everyone talks about but I haven't seen it yet - certainly not when the brightness is set manually.
I wonder if this dimming display thing is a new normal, that they've made the brightness more an automatic control now. I have no idea if this is to save battery (but then why not let the user choose) or if these new screens need to be protected more from overheating.

What's the point of full brightness if it's going to auto-dim all the time? I ended up returning my Galaxy Mega for this very reason.

What parts of the phone heats up? Mine is near the camera. But I havent had this message yet on my note but it does get fairly hot alot. I dont even do anything for it to heat up this much. Just browse around and dont play much games.

Make sure that the setting under display called "Auto adjust screen tone" is not selected.

I'm on my third... and posted already in your thread! for me this throttling happens all the time, gallery indexing for example triggers it a lot!
to clarify:
this throttling has nothing to do with settings a user can adjust, it's logic must be kernel implemented! no auto-contrast setting would help! and it happens even when you are on manual lowest brightness. on my devices the screen would switch even then in a cycle of ca. 20s between a additionally dimmed and the set state...
