[Q] Disable Gmail? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The app Gmail only allows for one gmail account, so one would have to use another email app such as Email or k-9 to get mails from various accounts. Since I don't want to pull duplicate gmail messages, I'd prefer to disable Gmail. Would the disabling cause some ill effects such as synchronization and accessibility to Google cloud? If so, any solutions?

Nope, if won't cause any issues. Just disable the gmail sync in the settings under your google account and you'll be fine

The gmail app can use as many accounts as you like, so I'm not sure what you're referring to. The gmail app is completely safe to install, as it can be installed/uninstalled right from the Play Store.

yea gmail lets you have many accounts, and the messages are separated and no not join the two emails.
just goto settings and add a gmail account, goto gmail click on your email address at the top and you can switch between the 2 there

Yes Gmail allows for multiple gmail accounts, but I don't see how I could add other accounts such as yahoo and work emails. Please correct me if this is not the case.

The Gmail app is for Gmail and "Google Apps" email accounts.
The Email app is for POP3 / IMAP4 / SMTP / and Active Sync (Exchange) accounts.
Yahoo has their own email app, but does offer IMAP4 and SMTP for premium accounts.
Check with the company IT department for ActiveSync settings for Work Exchange Email.

I have Gmail disabled and have seen NO troubles after doing so..
I gave up on the Gmail app when they removed the ability to increase the font size from within the app..

Offline Gmail

Had my Iconia for 2 weeks now, and finding new uses for it all the time.
It is a wifi only version, and I have a job that has me outdoors, and away from wifi for most of the day.
I want to cache all of my gmail messages (including attachments) so that I can view and use them offline.
Is there a setting for this, or is there an app?
Running Honeycomb.
Thanks.
I look for this also.
- another solution is
tether your phone with your tablet, and you will access online via phone... backup plan but still usefull sometimes.
You just need to setup gmail in the regular email app. Go to settings, accounts and sync, add account. Use the exchange (corporate) account type. User name is your full gmail email address. Server is m.google.com
It works.

Wow. Thanks for the tip. This is my first time hearing about this.
Should I setup my main account as Google, Exchange, or both?

^Not sure. GMAIL gets setup in the native app due to setting up your google account (for market, etc.). Not sure if you can remove it from the GMAIL app. Only drawback is double notifications for emails coming in to your gmail address. I suppose you could turn off notifications for the gmail app if it bothers you.

Do you need _all_ of them? Or just a subset? If you apply an "offline" label in gmail, then you can go into the gmail app and under label options, tell it to sync all of the "offline" label, rather than the default (4 days).
If you do actually need all of them, then I guess you could just apply the "offline" label to everything...
Thanks for all the help.
Still having some problems. When I set up the new account to sync in the regulat email app, it wants to set it up as imap, not as an exchange account type. Maybe I am doing this incorrectly?
I only need to sync one folder, and I figured out how to get the GMail program to sync all those messages, but each one has an attachment which is what I really need, and the attachments do not sync.
Getting close, but not quite what I need yet.
That's odd. The attachments sync fine for me for synced messages in the gmail app?

That's correct, you should add a "Corporate" account via Settings.
It seems now that the GMail app set to sync all mail (not just 4 days) is syncing the attachments for offline use. I am happy!! Thanks for the help everyone.

[Q] Email Configuration Questions

Hi There!
I want to configure my wife's Defy so she can get email from her gmail account.
I don't want it to be pop3, as I don't want to remove any of the messages from her gmail account, as she also gets her email via pop3 on her Desktop Outlook?
I see 2 different gmail options on her phone, is it an option to get some form of sync'd account or perhaps is Imap the only other option?
Cheers
You might have to enable IMAP in your Gmail account preferences, but you can also use POP3 and configure it to not delete the messages on the server.
Also from my experience the default mail application works better than the gmail one which is slow and doesn't always show latest messages to me.

Yah I am finding it hard to believe there isn't some form of activesync syncing option.

Gmail doesn't appear to be linked.

When I receive an e-mail on my Nexus and delete it the same e-mail isn't deleted from Gmail when I access it through my desktop, it also comes up as unread even though i have read and deleted it through the Gmail app on my Nexus.
What mail app are you using? Gmail ? The Stock Mail Client?
Both have sync settings in them.

Using the stock Gmail app. I've checked in the settings and it is all set to sync so not sure what's going on.
When using the other stock e-mail app for my other e-mail accounts they sync fine.
That happens to me in k9 on my phone. I like Gmail better on my n7. Make sure you look in settings under your account and check that manage labels is set to sync the number of days you have it set for. And that sync is set for Gmail in general settings.

Need help setting up email - New Android user

Hello,
I am very new to Android. I just received my Note 10.1 today. I am trying to configure my gmail and other mails on it. I want to use the mail app for all my emails instead of GMAIL app. How do I do that? When I initially booted the device, I used my gmail account and it automatically configured my gmail on the GMAIL app. I configured gmail on the native mail app as well. Now I have my gmail on both places, I want to use only the native mail app. Removing email sync under settings > accounts> is causing a sync error icon and it also cause the GMAIL app to crash.
Like I said I am very new to Android, this is my first android device. Can someone help me configure this? Hope I posted this on the right forum.
TIA

Hi, Thanks for reply. So you want me to use this new id to download apps etc on the play store, but use my main id for emails?
I don't use the Gmail app either. I use the Samsung stock e-mail client so my Exchange and other e-mail accounts are all in a unified inbox. Samsung's e-mail client can be set up on Gmail to receive "push" e-mail via Activesync. In the stock e-mail client set up a new e-mail account using your Gmail address and passord. On the first set-up page you'll see a "manual setup" option, select it.
Use these settings...
Under domain\user name enter...
google\"your e-mail address"@gmail.com
Under Exchange server enter...
m.google.com
Now you'll receive e-mails as they arrive in you Gmail inbox. This method is also less hard on the battery. Go in to Settings>Application manager and swipe three times to the left until "all" applications are showing. Scroll down to find the Gmail app. Open it and press "disable." Now all your Gmail will be routed through the stock e-mail client without being duplicated in Gmail.
P.S. - Gmail via Activesync is being discontinued to new users (legacy user's are protected) effective February 1, 2013.

Thanks for your reply. I have done the first part and it seems to be working. I see mails coming to the native mail app.
But I don't see an option to disable GMAIL app under app manager. All I have is force stop, uninstall updates, clear data, clear cache. NO other options. Am I missing something.

Oops. To disable an app you always have to uninstall any updates to it first. Once you do that you'll see the "disable" option.

Ok, I did it. It removed the gmail app. I guess I am good now. Thanks.

Stock email app and lock screen questions

Does The S4's email app act as an email hub for multiple email accounts? For example if I have a gmail account, hotmail account and an email account using IMAP will all of the emails from those 3 accounts show up in a general pr all inbox? I did not feel comfortable adding email accounts to the S4 I used at the store to test this out.
Also with being able to have widgets in the lock screen, will the email app show email subject and who it is from on the lock screen like IOS?
Lastly does the email app on the S4 push hotmail and IMAP 24/7 like blackberry.
Gmail is still separate. Imap is not push but interval based from what I can tell, but you can combine all email but gmail into a universal inbox.

Gmail will work with the stock E-Mail app as well. Running now on my S4!
