[Q] Power button does not work/water damage - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My nexus 7 suffered some water damage. Ever since then the power button has not worked. The battery ran out and I wasn't able to charge it in time so now I can't turn it on anymore.
Everything else worked fine, speakers, video, volume buttons. Is there any way to fix it? I tried taking it apart, but didn't know where to look for the problem.
Thanks in advanced for any help.

Don't switch it on. Put it in a bag of uncooked rice to suck out its moisture from device for 2 days.

It's possible that the board could have been shorted out, or the upper part of the board. The bag of rice trick does seem to work. Make sure its completely dry before you plug it in to charge. Even a little bit of moisture in the device could cause a short if it is plugged into the charger.

Question about a damaged 8125

Long story short awhile back I forgot my 8125 on the trunk of my car while it was raining/wet outside and drove off to test drive my car. When I got back I noticed that my phone was missing so I backtracked and found the phone lying in the road. I picked up all the pieces I could find. So while waiting on a replacement battery to arrive to see if it would power up, I connected it to the usb charger and of course nothing happened UNTIL I pulled the charger out and all of a sudden the screen lit white for like a second and went blank. Could this mean that this phone still works?
Well,it depends,if the phone is still not short circuit, due to the moister present in the phone,as you say,you charged and the screen lit up for a second and then died.I wud rather suggest,if you are able to open the phone (Dismantle) and try to check if no moisture is present, but still clean it and wipe out any moisture with a soft cloth or use a hair dryer (Hot air) to dry out the moisture.Get the battery fully charged with the wall charger and try to power on and check if it works fine, otherwise,if it had short circuit, then it might be a dead meat.
Cheers!

HD soaked with water

Hi guys unfortunately my HD was in a drawer during night and in the morning i found it soaked with water under the battery and both cards. I was in hospital so probably the infusion hose is the reason. I tried standart drying and isopropyl but it behaves like the "volume down" button is permanently pressed and my screen flashes touchFlo/volume. When i try to power it on by pressing power button it gets in bootloader. I must press both volume and power buttons together for a while to turn it on. Everything except the button is fine. I am stuck with that and warranty doesn´t repair water damage. I don´t want to disassemble it because it´s new only few weeks. Any idea please? Thanks
That realy sucks dude!
I've had experience with a Touch Cruise that got dropped in a bucket filled with water. After drying it for three days it actually worked (even till this day).
Don't think there is much hope for your device since it was covered with a fluid for a longer time. This also means that there is quite a big chance that the battery caused some short circuit in the device.
My advice is to remove the battery and let the device dry for a few days.
Also, never use a damaged battery, get a new one.
Try the submerging it in dry rice trick, the rice should help to absorb the moisture inside the device. @ this juncture it can't hurt to try.
Leave it for a couple of days before turning it on.

Not charging after a water "event"?

My wife transitioned into my older GS4 (i337) after her GS3 power button failed. The GS3 was repaired and set aside as a spare (good idea). After getting settled into the GS4, it experienced a water "event". She was wise enough to pull the battery and get it into some rice. It stayed there for a few hours until I could get to it. She said it only had a little water inside, but the rice was a precaution. The water indicator on the battery only had one tiny bit of pink . Guessing the Trident Aegis case did some good protecting there. I took the phone out of the rice and placed it under a desk lamp that has a history of being a bit of a heat lamp. I used it to warm the phone for a few hours before I checked the phone's viability.
I kept the SIM and the SD card out for first power up attempt. ALIVE! I noticed that the battery was low, so I connected a charger. No chargee. Reboot no help. Powered off and attempted to charge. When powered off, it did give a short vibration and a quick screen flash, maybe a few lines, every 6 seconds. Expecting that the phone would work, but not have charging capabilities. Quite inconvenient.
What parts could I throw at it? Since the charging port was really the only place water could have gotten in while the phone was on, I decided to throw that part at it. I found this one (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HA3HW1A?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00) on Amazon, so figgered I would give it a chance. Took about 20 minutes to replace it.
Jackpot. Charged right up, plobby faster than I had previously experienced.
If you experience a water "event" and the device wakes, but won't charge, this could be the fix. The part I ordered came with everything you need (tools). There are several videos on youtube that show you everything you need to know. Watch a few before you begin. Some have hints and pointers that others don't.
Hope someone finds this post helpful. Thank me if you do!
I had an s4 that also got wet but I took the phone part completely before placing the phone in a plastic bag with desiccant.
Also, if you experience a situation where you receive an on-screen message that says "Charging paused, battery temperature too low", it's also probably a USB port issue.

Problem with charging - moisture detected in the USB port.

As in the title. Right now I'm experiencing an issue with the 'moisture detected' notification. So long story short I'm on vacation right now in Vietnam (very humid) and yesterday I took my phone to the swimming pool in order to take a few pictures since it is IP68 waterproof. So all was good, wiped the phone clean and it was working perfectly (camera, fingerprint, screen etc.) until I've tried plugging it in. Then it showed the moisture detected notification so I've cleaned the port using cotton wipes, soft toilet paper and tried blowing into the port. It worked and phone did manage to charge to 100% overnight. But today the issue came once again. Tried using small toothpick wrapped in toilet paper in order to properly clean the area around charging port but it didn't manage to fix the problem. I'm honestly out of ideas and best thing for me would be to fix it without having to claim warranty since as I said I'm outside of my country right now. Do any of you guys have any idea how to fix it or encountered the same issue before?
EDIT: Right now my phone is sitting at 9% and I'm running out of ideas on what to do. I've also tried putting it vertically in rice in order to get rid of any moisture from the usb port but it didn't do ****.
Make sure you don't get other debris in the port (rice). If you have a small brush use that. Rubbing alcohol and a pressed qtip can also work. Good luck

I don't have access to a rubbing alcohol and I've tried using qtip as well as small brush to clean the port. The port itself looks clean and I can't observe any signs of moisture.
"I took my phone to the swimming pool in order to take a few pictures since it is IP68 waterproof."
No phone is waterproof BUT water resistant.
Its meant for accidental drops into water, splashes, rain etc. Not for a day of underwater filming and pictures.
Big lesson learnt here.
Try doing a factory reset, however, with 9% battery, this is a dangerous game.
Did you actually immerse your phone in the swimming pool?
Depending on which model you have, you could also try wireless charging
I think the port is perfectly dry, it must be the software that triggers a time counter with this message, to prevent the user from creating a short circuit.
Wait a few more hours / days and the message should disappear.
As said above, it is not Waterproof but water resistant, it implies such disturbances after a stay in the water
Sent from my LG G6 using XDA Labs
This is a somewhat common problem with the G6. Mine shows this error about once a month and I've never had water near my phone. It is some sort of hardware problem that has nothing to do with water. Try powering down and back up with it plugged into the charger, it may take a few times but that clears it on my unit. You can also try going into developer options and changing the usb port settings to charge only.
Try this
I may have found a temp solution to bypass the LG G6 moisture charge block.
1.Power the phone off completely.
2.Start in Recovery Mode ( Power on by holding Volume Down and Power buttons)
3.Clear Cache.
4.Before the phone reboots hold the buttons to return to Recovery Mode.
5.Select Power Off
6.Have the usb cord connected to a running computer.
7. Plug the cord into the phone while holding Volume Up and Power Buttons to go to Download Mode.
8. Reboot the phone by holding the Recovery Mode Buttons.
9. The phone should boot being nice to the usb cord and should be charging.
10. you may have to repeat these steps to charge the phone in the future, Im able to unhook it from the computer and connect it to a wall charger and it still work fine for at least one charge.
I also got this problem. But until now i think it solve. What i did is, first i use earbuds to clean the inner but it still show the warning.. Then i put vertically in rice for 30 minutes.. And it still show the warning. Lastly i used isopropyl alcohol pad to clean the insert of usb using toothpick. And the warning not showing off until now and i can charge the phone regularly...
I had this problem too. I resolved it by running tap water into the port for 2s and drying it off immediately using a toothpick and dry paper towel
My G6 started doing this a few days ago, now the notification pops up and closes every now and then (between every 10 seconds and 10 minutes, totally random) but the notifications go away when I plug my phone in? Which would be fine, but the notification wakes the screen up so I'm losing battery throughout the day like crazy...
I solve the problem with this: go to settings-general-apps-right upper corner dots-show system-app lg system server- storage- clear cache and confirm. Thats are all.
Happens to me a lot when I'm working outside in the rain and the phone is in my pocket. What I do and it works everytime for me, I use a hair dryer on high aimed into the port holding the phone port side down so any water will drip out. Do it for about 30 secs and plug your phone it, it should work.

I got the same exact problem, first the humidity sensor error, and then the battery icon the continuously changes to charging and not.
I've solved the first with alcohol and toothtpic, but not the second one.
When I restart it, it doesn't do it for a while, and then it comes back.
I already did:
- night in rice
- toothpick and Water with alcohol
- poured alcohol in the port and then cleaned it
- WD40
Any further solutions from the Pro member?
It does charge when off, but the the battery icon starts changing back and forward....
Thank you in advance!!!!!

I agree with what they say. The water residues that can not come out due to the pressure difference will come out with new water. Put pure (bottled) water in a bowl and let it stand for 5-10 minutes, quickly remove it from the water (vertical) and dry it. Tap water can cause scale formation. If the first attempt fails, try again and try to shake the phone in the towel.
Try to put your phone without sim card slot for a night in rice or moisture balls and try the haïr dryer
Had the same problem for few weeks, finally it disappeared, i guess dried off. in a mean time, try to shut down the phone unplugged, start again and plug the power in when LG logo appears on the screen. worked for me, try different timing until it works. Needs to be plugged in before phone finished boot
Best and easy way to resolve Moisture detected check USB port
I just had this issue about 15 mins back. Was worried on how to resolve it and hence searched for solution on XDA.
I also tried to take a towel with threads tied open on the ends rolled the treads end and pushed into the charging port and cleaned it for few seconds and it worked. I now dont see that error anymore.

I have it too. why the **** does LG have the right to do this , basiclly killing the phone for moisture , it's not that high a volatage. mine is from wearing in my coat and sweating . this will be my last LG ever , anyone know other phones that refuse to charge so i can avoid buying that brand there goes 700.00 dollars down the drain . first cell phone to do this in 30 years since the first brick fucing pissed as this phone is new . any way to r00t it and disable this ?

phone dropped in sea worked fine but...

So I dropped my old S2 phone in sea (salt water!). I took almost all precautions in that situations. It dried after few days , I cleaned it gently with a toothbrush (no chemicals as alcohol) and worked fine for couple of days. I managed to save photos and other essential stuff. I noticed in BBS msm_otg wakelock like its charging or connected on USB charger but it suffered of it before. Restart would resolve issue. After dropped in sea it was always there. (Great amount of Samsung phones that generation had/has that wakelock issue/also known as vbus_present because of malfunctioned micro usb port) After a week I couldn't powered it on. When I pulled battery out and left it for couple hours it would power on again and worked for a day. I had to repeat same procedure couple of times and it worked fine but finally phone didn't start any more. I can feel vibration after pressing power button but that's all. If I'm keeping it pressured again for 10 sec it restarts (can feel vibration again) but logo doesn't appear any more. Trick with pulling battery out for even a 24 hours (i presumed it needed to discharge completely) doesn't work anymore.
Is it dead or there is somth more I could do? I'm definitely getting new phone but i remembered i had few files on it worth to save.
Tnx.
Since the phone is already DOA, try disconnecting the battery, hit the power button a few times to discharge capacitors and wash the main board in distilled water. The water shouldn't present any issues to the circuit board and should remove any sodium or other mineral residues that have probably formed across some of the lands.
Dry with a hair dryer on either cool or the lowest heat setting available or allow to air dry. If the power switch is not a part of the board, the water shouldn't hurt it either, clean it out with the distilled. I don't know the effects that the distilled would have on the display circuitry, so I would do the display only as a last resort.
Hope this helps.

Sir, thank you so much. I followed your instructions and phone booted again. Working like a charm . We'll see for how long. Backuped all needed data. I even noticed that phone went to deep sleep. Even after charging. No need to restart it every time after charging. (I stumbled somewhere on forum that capacitor can be removed, but that's instructions for i9000).
Anyway thank you very, very much. Saved me. :good:
