[Q] SGS4 origin and how to change it. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my phone, when I opened it I noticed that the first language option that was given to me was spanish (or maybe portugese not really sure) anyway, that got me curious, did my phone come originally from south america or somewhere in the iberian peninsula?
I was sure about this when I opened the browser and saw this locked bookmark from samsung that is in spanish.
anyway, is there anyway to know where my phone originally came from or was manufactured for? and is there any way to change this?
Thank you.

You can search the baseband info on sammobile.com
I found that my ebay purchased unit was bound for Trinidad/Tobago.

Thanks!
Mine is for Colombia (COO)
will it be OK to install a firmware other than the one for colombia? for example I want to change to a firmware from brazil instead or germany.

Yes you can guys
flash via ODIN. Download firmware from samfirmware

Surely flashing a different firmware cant change the origin of the phone?

Be careful, your warranty may not be valid if the phones from a different country >. <

http://fus.nanzen.se/ this site lets you know what updates are available.
and it depends. if youre waiting for OTA, you can only wait for the OTA for the region the device came from. ie. im on 2.3.5 polish version, i cant download hong kong 2.3.6 ota, even if im in hong kong. ota is specific to the region your device originated from.
your ota will automatically download the version specific for your phone, regardless of where you are. the only except is if youre on an operator locked device, at which point, you would need to be able to communicate with the operators servers.
however, if youre choosing to flash the software manually, you can use another region's firmware iirc.
simplest way is to just plug it into your computer and run KIES and it will tell you if theres an update for your specific device or not.
Thanks .

Enter this into your phone's dial pad: *#272*imei# where imei is your phone's imei.
See Settings > About Phone > Status > IMEI.
If you see a list of sales codes(CSC's) like XEU, DBT etc, then you can change your CSC to DBT and the OTA and Kies update will work.
Otherwise, you may have a network branded version that doesn't have options to change CSC and this won't work.

the man was correct as you CAN use any network operator SIM. unfortunately that is different from being able to set a country code. i am in the same situation as i assumed CPW provided all phones totally stock ... clearly i was wrong :-(

how do i find what my original rom was

I flashed my n8000 with the german 4.1.2 rom. But I totally forgot what rom i was originally on. Is there somewhere to find out what my original rom was if in case i have to revert back?
i've been wondering about this myself.
=)
Well if you have no record then its a guess .
But some on XDA say Kies Tools Firmware Upgrade and Initialization will tell you .
Me no idea i don't use Kies .
jje
Connect it to Kies it will give you PDA and CSC number with the CSC number you can find which country your device belongs to as that does not change
Also if you can tell from which country your device was purchase I can help you
Depends on where you got it from (or where you live) and your model number is on the back beneath the Samsung logo.
Using the model number and your country, go to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016792
and find your firmware from there

Look on your invoice / box / website where you bought it and search for the code
If your device is black: GT-N8000ZWAPHN
If your device is white: GT-N8000EAAPHN
If it says PHN you had a dutch Samsung firmware.
If you want to know exactly what dutch firmware version was on your device you have to ask Samsung.
When you give it back it is enough to give them a dutch firmware version. I do not think you need to give them exactly the same dutch firmware version that was on it, you are allowed to upgrade.

N910U Hong Kong vs N910C Poland (question about firmware updates)

Over the years, I noticed that the firmware for the market to hong kong always remain a step backwards compared to those for the European market, in particular for Poland. Also for the Notes 4, the European market has got the firmware version ANJ4 while Hong Kong still have version ANJ3.
For these reasons I have not yet taken the N910U. I'm wrong?
Up!
For Note 10.1 updates for Polish firmware were always first or close to being first - at least in the beginnnng - (I have a theory that Samsung was using us as beta-testers ). But I don't know if it's true for other Samsung devices. Also there seems to be a big mess on our market with Note 4 - we can choose from versions C, U and F in different stores - but no store is 100% sure if we will get the version they state. There might be differences in times of updates for those various versions for Polish market too.... I chose C, but am not sure what I will get, really (it seems to be most available though, only one store had U).
Thank you Magnesus! Can you say me where can I buy the sm-n910c(an online store with paypal)? I'm in Italy.
I don't know, Polish stores usually don't ship abroad I think and no PayPal support. I bought mine at vobis.pl. We have quite high prices too so I wouldn't recommend buying from Poland.
Yes the prices are very high ,I have seen them here: http://geizhals.eu/samsung-galaxy-note-4-n910c-schwarz-a1161556.html
Still thanks!
Regards
i have the N910U one..and as u can see in sammobile N910U and N910C are up to date till now ..so i think samsung will make all equal from now on i think?

Yes, but I'm in Europe(Italy). With Poland rom I have always found italian language on all items, settings menu, keyboard, etc .. Instead, with my old galaxy s4 Exynos(for Asiatic market) one time I had flashed another rom(more updated) but the keyboard and some voices of the menu was in Korean/Chinese, no italian and no English. In another words, with Poland rom I'm (almost)sure that the language fit my needed.

You won't need to downgrade/upgrade your modem manually. It'll happen automatically when you upgrade the firmware.
Since Spain (Vodafone) hasn't released the 5.0.1 update for the GT-I9506 yet, you should flash another one.
Theoretically, any region's firmware should work.
Go to Sammobile.com/firmwares and type GT-I9506.
Flash any firmware that isn't associated with a carrier.
From what I can see, Nordic Countries, Slovakia and Greece have unbranded I9506 firmwares.
Keep in mind, if your phone is ever sent for warranty, they might not accept it because the CSC will change.
So this is entirely up to you.

All the firmwares are identical, only difference is the origin country and obviously the CSC.
Since the firmwares are identical, they're all stable and SamMobile doesn't upload unstable ROMs, all the ROMs on are fully developed and are completely stable.

CSC stands for Customer Sales Code
CSC varies depending on who sold the phone to you, was it through a carrier or was it from a retail store?
For example, the CSC for Italy is ITV and XEF for France.
The CSC for Spain is PHE, but that's if you bought your phone from a retail store.
However, since your phone is from a carrier (your first post shows ATL as your CSC)
ATL is also the CSC for Spain but ATL is for Vodafone.
Suppose your phone gets damaged and needs to be sent in for warranty to get repaired/replaced.
The guy at the service center will check the phone and if the CSC is different from ATL, he will refuse to take your phone as it has technically been tampered with, in the sense that the original ROM has been removed and you have flashed the ROM of another country on your phone. There is nothing wrong with having the ROM for another country, but the service center people don't accept your phone unless it has the original CSC, which in your case is ATL.
BUT, if your phone ever does go for repair etc, do change the CSC before sending it.
You can use this guide to change your CSC.
It's fairly easy and you should be done quickly.
Enjoy flashing a new ROM on your phone and enjoy the 5.0.1 experience on that amazing Snapdragon-800 processor.

Of course there is.
Google change your CSC and a big XDA thread should come up in the Galaxy Grand section. That has a full tutorial in it, however before you do that.
Is the ATL CSC still installed on your phone even after flashing the firmware of a different country?
Check by dialing *#1234# in the dialer and post the stuff written in the CSC field here.

Dear Murtaza,
I hope you don't mind I am sending you a private message regarding my brother's phone.
He purchased it new. The Phone was operator blocked.
The store did something to the phone to allow him using the local telecom sim card.
Since my brother was not able to upgrade to new os versions. He gets the notifications but a soon as he executes the upgrade process on the air, an error shows up saying that the phone has been modified.
I have attached all the phone information collected using PHONE INFO.
Kindly, let me know whether I Can use the same Rom NEE to upgrade his phone and if safe doing it.
Is there anything else to do to correct the manual upgrade process?
Many thanks my friend

His phone is an I9505, so the process is exactly the same.
Just replace the I9506 firmware with the I9505 firmware the tutorial and you're all set. However, since device status is modified, after flashing the firmware through Odin, you should do a Factory Reset.
You can use any regions ROM as long as it's unbranded. The manual update process is exactly the same as it is on your phone.
Once you've downloaded the 5.0.1 firmware, flash it and let me know how its worked out for you.

Lollipop for Latin American MT7-L09

Okay so upon further investigation I came to learn that the phone I purchased is an unlocked unbranded MT7-L09 from Colombia. I have reverted back to the original firmware, which is B120SP04a. My question is there anyone else here with a Mate 7 from Latin America? If so, have you been able to successfully update to the official Lollipop? If so, what firmware were you on and what region did you install Lollipop from?
Any help and advice is GREATLY appreciated!
TIA
P.S. To determine what region my device was from I did the following:
1. In dialer, dial *#*#2846579#*#*
2. Go to ProjectMenu
3. Go to Network Setting
4. Go to Operator and country info
Mine shows Operator Name as hw and Country Name as nla
According to a guide I saw on CarbonTesla these are some of the other regions:
hw/spcseas – Malaysia
unicomelectric/cn – China
hw/meafnaf – Pakistan
mts/by – Belarus
I live in Central America and I upgraded succesfuly using the guides you find here. Used the official EU firmware and works great.

I live in the U.S., but the phone I purchased is from Northern Latin America. Perhaps the phone you have is European. I have tried all the versions available here and none of them work properly. I have installed both the versions from Malaysia and the one from Europe, each has some type of problem when installed or lack functionality. This is because in fact my phone is not from any of those regions. I saw a guide on how to change the Region for the Huawei Honor 4C, but I cannot find anything for the Mate 7, plus it seems a bit risky to change the region.
I saw a video on youtube of a guy in Peru who successfully updated to Lollipop, but the guy is charging and I'm not willing to pay for something I can do myself. I just need a version of Lollipop that has been released for that Region.
Well, sadly, there is no official lollipop release for LA. MT7-L09 is simply an international version and should work on most regions. I flash this rom:
"MT7-L09_Firmware_C900B324_Android 5.1.1_EMUI 3".
And upgraded from "Jazz-L09 V100R001C00B137". According to the manual, you can directly upgrade from other KK versions.

Is knuckle snapshot working for you? And did you factory reset before or after updating? Do you still have 5x5 icons available? Can you possibly post the links to the firmwares you used?
Lollipop link
kitkat b137 link
knuckle gestures work... 5x5 work... Only thing missing is being able to change DPI down to 400 which I got used to, working with 420 now.
Ohhhh.... And I did a factory reset after upgrading.
On my phone is showing this:
Operator name:hw
Country name:eu
What it means? I'm still with B137, no OTA for my phone.
Thanks in advance.

@ronnie72... That means that you have the European version. So you can just download the link posted by @Zolocofxp to upgrade to Lollipop. You may also need to download the update_cust.app which is linked here
Hope you get it working. It took me a while to finally get everything up and running properly, but the link above should point you in the right direction.
@Bonnie1977, thanks! I know now to upgrade with "Local update". But why OTA still unavailable??? Strange ....

@ronnie72... I have no idea why no OTA. I live in the U.S., so for me I'll never receive any OTA updates. I just download them from Huawei's site and do the local update.
On my phone is showing this:
Operator name: Claro
Country name: pe
Whats it means?

I think that means you're locked to Claro, which is the Network provider and country seems to be Peru.
