The S2 takes forever to charge the battery. Coming fron the iphone 4 i suspect this takes ay laeast twice as long to charge!
Considering the battery performance isnt that great, this is a double whammy!

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. I'm always charging it when I'm at home to keep it fully charged, in case I'm going out.
charging takes me about 3hours (from empty). It is stanrard time
Same here for charging. Between 3 & 4 hours. But battery life is getting better especially if i disable 3G and wifi

Im using nokia charger 1.2A and HTC charger 1A and also i have 0.7A all of them takes about 3 hours may be hardware bug?
I've been using a BB charger for it, and thought maybe that was the reason. Glad to know it isn't.

Yep, I confirm.
Charging takes around 3 hours.
I can use it almost 48 hours before it needs to be charged again. So it is not really annoying.
Stock SGS 2 with official battery charger and a full drained empty battery 3.5 hours to charge to 100% .

About 3 hours here which is fine, charging from the supplied charger connected to electricity mains. Are you charging via the USB connector? It will take a lot longer, something called trickle charge or something like that.

I noticed this when my brother bought the same phone. His takes a ridiculous amount of time to charge, maybe 1% per 10 mins or so and it gets really hot while doing so.
Mine on the other hand doesn't get hot at all and charges at least 3 times faster than his.
please state charge state, ages, fast normal etc.

The charger shipped with my S2 has only 700mA...
especially if you are using the phone (worst: gaming) while charging it seems to get never finished . I guess the current drain doesn't left much for the charging.
So i'm using my old HTC-chargers (one AC=>USB and AC=> MicroUSB) witch both supplies 1000mA.... ~43% more in theory
Hard to say how big the advantage is in fact, but it makes a difference.
Also keep in mind, that a standard USB-Port supplies max. 500mA, depending on other USB-devices even much less. I also read that the charging result is "better" if you not using it in the meantime.
You can buy USB-Chargers up to 2100mA (e.g Amazon), but i have doubts that this will be improve the charging time because on the type-label behind the battery is written Rated : 3,7V-1000mA. Even more current wouldn't not damage the device (afaik!!!), the device or the battery could not charge faster.
Maybe somebody knows about what is meant by the the 1000mA exactly. Would be nice if the device could be charge a little bit faster.
Otherwise i am going to buy a 2nd battery with an external charger.

USB charging is slow on the S2 as it uses trickle charging
"Trickle" is an exaggeration.
The phone can tell whether it's connected to USB or a mains charger. If the latter, it limits charge current to 650mA. If the former 400mA.
It will charge faster on the mains but not loads faster.

I usually sleep more than 3.5 hours per day so I don´t see any problem in the charging time

My other cell phones are fully charged in 2 hours, more or less. And yes, I'm considering selling it, because I like to use my gadgets and the SGSII doesn't admit an intensive use without running out of battery, unless you have a second battery.

Yeah, I do sleep more than 3.5 hours per day and I try to charge it every night, but the problem is when the phone runs out of battery in the middle of the day and you don't have 3.5 to spend in charging it fully.
I think the iphone 4 is only a 1420Mah battery if I remember correctly while ours is 1650. Sure, it takes perhaps another hour to charge but I don't find it a big deal. It does appear that the first 50% charges faster then the second half as well but that could just be my imagination.
I have read that Samsung phones charge slower so that the battery life will be longer than that of those other phones such as HTC where the phone charges a lot faster. I'd rather get another year out of my battery and it take longer but do admit 3.5 hours does seem like a while.
this topic has been covered. teh SGS2 battery driver is capped at 650 mA for wall charging, 450 mA for USB charging. this code resides in the battery driver.
someone could compile a new kernel with this value raised. other phones like the nexus one charge at 980 mA for wall charger, 480 for USB.
samsung capped charge current, likely for heat issues, nobody really knows.

I have had it plugged into the mains, running tunein radio through wifi and its gone from 85% to 86% in one hour.
If I charge from 10% with phone off it takes about 4 hours to fully charge
If I charge from 10% with my phone on running stuff, it actually never gets to fully charges by the time I finish work...at 6pm
Sorry to keep comparing to the dreaded FruitPhone, but that would charge whilst running wifi and tunein from 10% to 100% in about 2 hours.

it might well be a 1650 battery, but it starts to get unusable when it takes all day to charge then a few hours to loose it all.
This phone is the greatest but the battery life just completely destroys it, I am beginning to think I made the wrong choice

Aye... if I don't the bloomin thing would be dead by lunchtime, and I listen to music.
So I basically have to turn it off not use it so I can charge it, how crap is that, owned my iphone a year never had any problems with battery and I always used and charged in its dock.
The desire had slow charging too but snq- fixed this in his kernels maybe we can port his fix to our kernels
btw it's true li-ion batteries degrade quicky when the heat up (or completely charge or discharge)
From 30% it took me one hour and a half to fully charge..
I recommend to download battery mix as it takes very good statistic on the battery life and one can tell exactly how long it takes to charge and discharge

just for the record all Lion batteries in phones never fully discharge or recharge, as there balanced by a balancing chip.
when you get to the likes of 0% you actually have 20% charge, thats why you can power on the phone but it will immediately switch off again. like wise, charging you never reach 100%, it's more like 89%, again because of how Lion works.
if you fully discharged and fully recharged, well put it simply you'd have a lot of exploding phones, fire and chemical burns...

But charging with the usb cable connected to the pc it takes much longer.

Because:
a) That´s how Li-Ion-batteries are charged. To fully charge a Li-Ion-battery you need 3-4h.
b) The power-supply is pretty weak. It is just enough to charge the phone at decent speed, but it is not enough to charge it and intensely use it the same time. In this case much of the power is used by the phone and there is not enough left to do a proper charging. I use a 1,2A power-supply from my old Nokia, and while it won´t speed up charging itself, at least it slows down less when I´m using the phone while charging.

This is not possible. The mighty fruity-phone may tell you it is 100% charged, but certainly it isn´t
You can charge a Li-Ion-battery very fast from 0 to 70-85% you could reach this in 1h. But you have to charge the remaining 15-30% very slowly, otherwise the voltage would raise too much and destroy your battery.
The so called saturation-stage (the charging-stage until 100%) takes longer the faster you charged at the beginning. If you really charged until the saturation-stage in 1h, the saturation-stage will take 2-3h.
If you charge slower, so you reach saturation-stage after 2h, the saturation-stage will only take 1-2h anymore.
In the end it will always take 3-4h to fully charge a Li-Ion-cell, regardless how strong your power-supply is.
Another few notes:
Charging will get slower the fuller the battery already is.
Using the phone with low battery-percentage will lengthen the charging-time quite a bit, a stronger power-supply could help.
Getting the last 20% in a Li-Ion-cell will always be very slow, usage of the phone won´t influence this a lot, and a stronger power-supply can´t help.
It doesn´t matter much, how much charge is left in the battery, to fully charge it it will always take long, as you spend most of the time in the saturation-stage (the higher the left percentage is, the more time you spent in saturation-stage)

Your battery sounds faulty to me, taking over 4 hours and only charging 1 percent in an hour. Try the battery calibration app in the market, if it doesn't improve get it swapped mate

it takes so long to charge because samsung capped the charge current at 650 mA in the battery driver. but other phones like HTC allow charging at the full 1 amp. so that's why its a slow charge, and why its possible to drain the battery even while plugged in to the charger.
Now who wants to ask kernel developers to increase that to .850 or 1 amp and use that lol.
I believe lack of heatsink due to design is the culprit behind decision to cap it at .650.

3 hrs to fully charge, and as i use tunein radio a lot i can tell you on my device with the screen off, wifi on with tunein running, it still seems to take no more than 3 hours maybe 15 mins more at most
I am probably going to order a cheap eBay Li-Ion battery that's 1800mAH and likely has a charge cap closer to 1000mAH. I will know in a week when I finally get my phone and report back if that battery helps. I expect it to heat up while charging and am going to use an external charger.
Two replacement batteries and an external charger go for about $12 USD on eBay btw.

I just tried playing a game and charging at the same time and the result is the phone was barely charging, which I think is a ridiculous. It means the power consumption when playing a game is almost equal to power being charged.
How about everyone else's charging time? I read before it seems Samsung capped the charging rate at 700mA. Not sure if it's true.

Being a high powered phone, it consumes a lot of battery power when being used and very little when in standby. So if you want to charge it at full rate, don't use the phone at the same time.

Without using the phone, my average charging time has been 3 hours and 43 minutes to get from totally flat 0% to 100%. Normal daily charge from about 20% to 100% takes 3 hours.
The charging rate is capped so that the battery and phone does not over heat during charging. An overheating battery will expand and possibly explode, thus potentially causing phone damage and user injury. That is why the charging rate is limited.
Same as posted before zero to full about 3 hours .

Same here...more than 3 hours for 0-100%...even this reduced charging heats up the phone..
KE series of firmware charged really slowly, but it was fixed after KE7 I think. With the latest KG3, charging from 0 to 100 is done in 2.5 hours with wall charger.
Also don't forget that this phone has a 1650 mah battery. Don't expect it to fill it up at the same time as a 1300 mah one found in most other phones.

I still think someone should increase the charge current and see how it fares. It's all about tweaking and testing.
Charge the phone turned off, that's the fastest way to charge it.
Well personally I think it's kind of counter productive if the phone can't charge properly when you use it at the same time.

So how much truth is in statement that you can't use navigation, listen to MP3s and charge via car charger because your phone will be discharging anyway?
The note is a disaster for me when it comes to charging.
If your battery is low and you start charging it but using it at the same time, it doesn't get worse, but it doesn't get better either i.e. actually charge the thing, it just holds its own.

I am not facing such problems. Charging takes pretty long yes but not as bad as you said. A larger battery will of course need a longer time to charge. But I wonder sometimes too if it's the battery problem or the charger output problem and if there's a way to speed up the process.

I think it is more to do with the actual charger, seems like a trickle charge or something.
Yes if charging and using at the same time you would not expect it to charge as quick, but mine doesnt really charge at all, just stays the same.
My acer iconia will charge like lightning even when i am using it, smaller battery or not it still charges!
This was one of the things i was looking forward to with the note, but this slow charge seems to make it more or less the same as what I am used to.
I have the usb plug which comes with the kindle, might it do a better job?
If anyone manages to find a proprietary charger which can produce better charging I will like to know too
That is common the charging is very slow and if you are playing HD games then the charging is almost in negative. May be its because of the voltage of the charger inputs and it is to low. Samsung must have done it for a reason may be its because of the proprietry port or the battery itself we do not know but we need to live it
Agreed, charging this thing takes a long time. Keep in mind that the battery is 7000 mAh and the charger is most likely a 2 amp charger, pegging the charge time at around 4 hours with no other losses. So if you're using it, it should take even longer.

No such issue here. I charge to full capacity while using all the time.
I get what he's saying. Because it draws so much power when you're using it; having it charging at the same time doesn't move the needle much. For example, if you're watching a movie while it's charging you'll probably be at the same point battery wise when the movies over. People complain about this all the time when their using their devices as a GPS. In some cases not only doesn't it charge but it actually continues to drain so you're worse off from where you started. We're using 21st century toys powered by 20th century battery technology.

I also have to say one thing I do not like doing is turning the screen brightness down. After all we all get these things as they look so good, so I am not going to make it look worse when I am using it, what would be the point in that? Its a bit like saying yeah my battery life is 14 days but actually it is on standby for that time lol...
Anyway, I still believe it should be better and the primary cause is the weak charger for what ever reason sammy decided to make it that way, but its not a good thing.
It seems like I remember someone recommending a charger that was more powerful so the note would charge faster. Can anyone confirm this?

On a slightly related side note, doesn't it suck that the brightness just turns down completely when the battery is low?
The zslower charge rate protects the batteries life ,reduces the possibilty of heat and battery damage trickling insures a full charge

For all those facing the slight unresponsive screen please change the source of power, I had mine connected to UPS power supply as soon as I changed and connected it direclty the problem was gone.
Even if you read the user manual of Samsung Note its says thats one of the reasons
How Manhattan hours per day do you use the note? With a 10hrs battery life I find an overnight charge is sufficient

Anyway moving on.. so i just got my note 10.1 about a week ago, loving it but saw that while plugged in it was not charging at all while i was using the tablet and never quite getting to 100% overnight. By not charging while using, i mean to say that it was actually discharging. Yes of course i am using the stock charger and cable.. and even stock note.
so just tried something silly. Unplugged and plugged the usb from the block repeatedly about 5 times. Now its not only recognizing and charging, but charging relatively quickly even while using. To test, i unplugged for about 20 min and plugged back in. Same great results.
Just thought i would share instead of hoarding my new found knowledge like others..

i am in a great dilemma concerning this now. So basically, when my battery on my nexus 10 reach about 12% i plug it in the ac and within 6 hours its completely filled. Last night i plugged it in same thing, but instead of being completely charged, it was at only 48%. is my nexus 10 battery failing or something? So maybe this could have been the source of the problem, i had a 720p video running on mx player in the background.
Basically, what is the normal amount of charging hours and what is the battery life when fully charged?

Normally my Nexus 10 charges within a couple hours using the wall outlet, and when fully charged the battery life is usually around 9 hours. Also keep in mind that having video running in the background while it's charging will cause the tablet to charge at a much slower rate because the system is in use draining power while it's trying to charge. The best way to let it charge is to plug it into the ac adapter and just leave it to charge where the system is off but the device is showing the charging screen.

OP, you do know that powering the Nexus 10's panel (both the actual pixels and the GPU resources to draw whatever content you're using on such a high-res display) is basically the single biggest draw on the system, right? Your CPU can at least throttle down on idle, but if you're using your device the screen is going to be chewing through power like no one's business. If it's on, you can certainly expect a significant charging impact.

What time do you usually go to bed and then take it off the charger the next morning? I only ask to get an idea of how long it's left charging. Granted I should say by a couple I mean 3-5 hours not the literal definition of a couple.

It takes about 5 hours from 20% to 100%. From personal experience and from all reviews.
Mine takes from 5 to 6h... Maybe you should reboot your tablet and then plug it in the charger, remember to use the stock wall charger, as it's recommended .

It pains me to say that the power house device this N10 is, I think the charging issues might be a deal breaker for me and I will have to return it to walmart before my 15 days of ownership. I am using the device on max brightness, I know I know, but its new so I want to see what it looks like at highest setting for a bit. But really, my battery is draining while it is plugged into the charger it came with. Why would I keep a device I HAVE TO baby while charging to keep = or positive charging numbers. ANy advice before I return and look at something else? THanks guys.

I know you mentioned you want to use the maximum brightness and I certainly respect that but the colors and screen is still very vivid in my own opinion at automatic brightness or 60-70 brightness which will help your battery life. Another suggestion would be to make sure you have GPS, Bluetooth, etc. only turned on when you need them along with apps that drain battery such as Facebook and Twitter notification polling intervals. My final suggestion would be when you go to charge the tablet make sure nothing battery intensive such as video players, or games are running in the background just let the tablet charge without interruption.

OK thank you for the response. I will usually keep it on auto although I have had a set brightness takes less battery power than auto. Also does anyone know if you can trickle charge this tablet or should I say is that OK or should I just plug in full cycle charge then deplete to 15%. I have trickle charged my Nexus 10 before without any noticeable effect on the battery life, but as always if you want to maximize battery life charge the device to 100% and then after it is done charging go from there.
