Battery Charging taking too long! - Galaxy S II General

The S2 takes forever to charge the battery. Coming fron the iphone 4 i suspect this takes ay laeast twice as long to charge!
Considering the battery performance isnt that great, this is a double whammy!
What do you guus think?

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. I'm always charging it when I'm at home to keep it fully charged, in case I'm going out.

charging takes me about 3hours (from empty). It is stanrard time

Same here for charging. Between 3 & 4 hours. But battery life is getting better especially if i disable 3G and wifi

Im using nokia charger 1.2A and HTC charger 1A and also i have 0.7A all of them takes about 3 hours may be hardware bug?

I've been using a BB charger for it, and thought maybe that was the reason. Glad to know it isn't.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk

Yep, I confirm.
Charging takes around 3 hours.
I can use it almost 48 hours before it needs to be charged again. So it is not really annoying.

Stock SGS 2 with official battery charger and a full drained empty battery 3.5 hours to charge to 100% .

About 3 hours here which is fine, charging from the supplied charger connected to electricity mains. Are you charging via the USB connector? It will take a lot longer, something called trickle charge or something like that.

No it takes the normal time but if its to slow for you dont drain it or sell it .

I noticed this when my brother bought the same phone. His takes a ridiculous amount of time to charge, maybe 1% per 10 mins or so and it gets really hot while doing so.
Mine on the other hand doesn't get hot at all and charges at least 3 times faster than his.

please state charge state, ages, fast normal etc.
firmware and revison thanx

The charger shipped with my S2 has only 700mA...
especially if you are using the phone (worst: gaming) while charging it seems to get never finished . I guess the current drain doesn't left much for the charging.
So i'm using my old HTC-chargers (one AC=>USB and AC=> MicroUSB) witch both supplies 1000mA.... ~43% more in theory
Hard to say how big the advantage is in fact, but it makes a difference.
Also keep in mind, that a standard USB-Port supplies max. 500mA, depending on other USB-devices even much less. I also read that the charging result is "better" if you not using it in the meantime.
You can buy USB-Chargers up to 2100mA (e.g Amazon), but i have doubts that this will be improve the charging time because on the type-label behind the battery is written Rated : 3,7V-1000mA. Even more current wouldn't not damage the device (afaik!!!), the device or the battery could not charge faster.
Maybe somebody knows about what is meant by the the 1000mA exactly. Would be nice if the device could be charge a little bit faster.
Otherwise i am going to buy a 2nd battery with an external charger.
greetings

I found this on Android Forum

USB charging is slow on the S2 as it uses trickle charging
"Trickle" is an exaggeration.
The phone can tell whether it's connected to USB or a mains charger. If the latter, it limits charge current to 650mA. If the former 400mA.
It will charge faster on the mains but not loads faster.

My other cell phones are fully charged in 2 hours, more or less. And yes, I'm considering selling it, because I like to use my gadgets and the SGSII doesn't admit an intensive use without running out of battery, unless you have a second battery.

Yeah, I do sleep more than 3.5 hours per day and I try to charge it every night, but the problem is when the phone runs out of battery in the middle of the day and you don't have 3.5 to spend in charging it fully.

I think the iphone 4 is only a 1420Mah battery if I remember correctly while ours is 1650. Sure, it takes perhaps another hour to charge but I don't find it a big deal. It does appear that the first 50% charges faster then the second half as well but that could just be my imagination.
I have read that Samsung phones charge slower so that the battery life will be longer than that of those other phones such as HTC where the phone charges a lot faster. I'd rather get another year out of my battery and it take longer but do admit 3.5 hours does seem like a while.

this topic has been covered. teh SGS2 battery driver is capped at 650 mA for wall charging, 450 mA for USB charging. this code resides in the battery driver.
someone could compile a new kernel with this value raised. other phones like the nexus one charge at 980 mA for wall charger, 480 for USB.
samsung capped charge current, likely for heat issues, nobody really knows.

same. take long time to charge and heating if charge n gaming. the hottest spot at camera side

Why does this phone take so long to charge?

I have had it plugged into the mains, running tunein radio through wifi and its gone from 85% to 86% in one hour.
If I charge from 10% with phone off it takes about 4 hours to fully charge
If I charge from 10% with my phone on running stuff, it actually never gets to fully charges by the time I finish work...at 6pm
Sorry to keep comparing to the dreaded FruitPhone, but that would charge whilst running wifi and tunein from 10% to 100% in about 2 hours.
I am beginning to think my SGS2 is faulty
i am fiding it takes about 3 hours to charge from empty . It does take a long time indeed but i guess it is what we have to do for a 1650mah battery
3 hours from empty with stock charger .
jje
it might well be a 1650 battery, but it starts to get unusable when it takes all day to charge then a few hours to loose it all.
This phone is the greatest but the battery life just completely destroys it, I am beginning to think I made the wrong choice

Aye... if I don't the bloomin thing would be dead by lunchtime, and I listen to music.
So I basically have to turn it off not use it so I can charge it, how crap is that, owned my iphone a year never had any problems with battery and I always used and charged in its dock.
The desire had slow charging too but snq- fixed this in his kernels maybe we can port his fix to our kernels
btw it's true li-ion batteries degrade quicky when the heat up (or completely charge or discharge)
From 30% it took me one hour and a half to fully charge..
I recommend to download battery mix as it takes very good statistic on the battery life and one can tell exactly how long it takes to charge and discharge
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
just for the record all Lion batteries in phones never fully discharge or recharge, as there balanced by a balancing chip.
when you get to the likes of 0% you actually have 20% charge, thats why you can power on the phone but it will immediately switch off again. like wise, charging you never reach 100%, it's more like 89%, again because of how Lion works.
if you fully discharged and fully recharged, well put it simply you'd have a lot of exploding phones, fire and chemical burns...
Interesting!
My phone charges in about 2,5 - 3 hours, so should be normal...
But charging with the usb cable connected to the pc it takes much longer.
Any of you experience the same thing?

Because:
a) That´s how Li-Ion-batteries are charged. To fully charge a Li-Ion-battery you need 3-4h.
b) The power-supply is pretty weak. It is just enough to charge the phone at decent speed, but it is not enough to charge it and intensely use it the same time. In this case much of the power is used by the phone and there is not enough left to do a proper charging. I use a 1,2A power-supply from my old Nokia, and while it won´t speed up charging itself, at least it slows down less when I´m using the phone while charging.
Sorry to keep comparing to the dreaded FruitPhone, but that would charge whilst running wifi and tunein from 10% to 100% in about 2 hours.

This is not possible. The mighty fruity-phone may tell you it is 100% charged, but certainly it isn´t
You can charge a Li-Ion-battery very fast from 0 to 70-85% you could reach this in 1h. But you have to charge the remaining 15-30% very slowly, otherwise the voltage would raise too much and destroy your battery.
The so called saturation-stage (the charging-stage until 100%) takes longer the faster you charged at the beginning. If you really charged until the saturation-stage in 1h, the saturation-stage will take 2-3h.
If you charge slower, so you reach saturation-stage after 2h, the saturation-stage will only take 1-2h anymore.
In the end it will always take 3-4h to fully charge a Li-Ion-cell, regardless how strong your power-supply is.
Another few notes:
Charging will get slower the fuller the battery already is.
Using the phone with low battery-percentage will lengthen the charging-time quite a bit, a stronger power-supply could help.
Getting the last 20% in a Li-Ion-cell will always be very slow, usage of the phone won´t influence this a lot, and a stronger power-supply can´t help.
It doesn´t matter much, how much charge is left in the battery, to fully charge it it will always take long, as you spend most of the time in the saturation-stage (the higher the left percentage is, the more time you spent in saturation-stage)

it takes so long to charge because samsung capped the charge current at 650 mA in the battery driver. but other phones like HTC allow charging at the full 1 amp. so that's why its a slow charge, and why its possible to drain the battery even while plugged in to the charger.
Now who wants to ask kernel developers to increase that to .850 or 1 amp and use that lol.
I believe lack of heatsink due to design is the culprit behind decision to cap it at .650.

3 hrs to fully charge, and as i use tunein radio a lot i can tell you on my device with the screen off, wifi on with tunein running, it still seems to take no more than 3 hours maybe 15 mins more at most
I am probably going to order a cheap eBay Li-Ion battery that's 1800mAH and likely has a charge cap closer to 1000mAH. I will know in a week when I finally get my phone and report back if that battery helps. I expect it to heat up while charging and am going to use an external charger.
Two replacement batteries and an external charger go for about $12 USD on eBay btw.

[REQ] SpeedUp charging process

Hi people... i think that Samsung has got a little of troubles of making batteries and charging philosophies.
I has got two devices that are the last technology from samsung, the nexus s and the galaxy s2 right now.
The nexus s has got a very strange trouble (until now not fixed) that battery never reach full 100% state in charging. And much very very long charging time.
The Galaxy S2 reach 100% but takes too much time to charge. It's possibile that never one has think about modifying this?
Where we can start to mod this ? Inside the kernel? Inside bootloader?
I think it's not only a mine trouble
i think its the battery charger not the phone, which makes it so slow

Mine finishes very quickly. about 1-2 hours when it's at 25 percent. And you cant fix charging. Remember that it is a big battery.
Ever tried using an adaptor for a device that has a lower rating than the adaptor? Ever heard that pop and the smell that follows?
Learn to be patient. Last thing you need is for the battery to blow up and destroy your phone.
protip: turn off your phone while you're charging with AC and not USB.
it could be your USB (and by extension, your PC) is not providing enough power to the USB ports. It happens.
My phone charges in 4 hours with AC when the phone is off. 5 when on.
6 hours on USB, phone off. 8 phone on.
It can be "fixed" in the kernel.
Samsung made it charge slower so that it charges better.
Faster charging = more heat = more dissipation, and potentially other problems.
Even though its a safety feature, its ridiculously slow. Phones takes AGES for a full charge.

Do you guys not get more than 3-4 hours of sleep?
Do you guys exhaust the battery to the point where the phone turns itself off before plugging it in?
Can you not plug your phone in before you go to bed?
I always plug my phone in before I go to bed (usually with 10-20% remaining) and I don't remember a time where I wake up in the morning and the phone isn't 100%.
I'm not trying to be cynical...just curious what other people's routines are when 3-4 hours to charge a phone becomes an issue.
A complaint like this wouldn't even cross my mind.
I need a faster charge too. Not because I'm impatient but because the phone can use more current then it can charge, especially during car navigation.

First time charge

Hi all im about to pick up a n7 and join the club ..
But i'd like to know the first time charging pattern ? If i remember right i have to fully discharge to 0% and then overnight charge ?
Oh and while were at it how long one full charge takes ?
Thanks.
Sent From My Sexy Sensation.
With the new lipo batteries you should AVOID full discharges. Instead, charge the device to 100% before using, discharge to about 5%, turn off, then charge to full while off. That should condition and calibrate the battery effectively.
Also, a charge takes roughly three hours to full for me.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Manufacture doesn't recommend full discharge, they just recommend a full charge before it is completely discharged. What I did was discharged through use to about 30% (out of box it was 55%) then did a full charge.
As far as how long it takes charge, it really does depend on your power. Every house and every location get its power differently really. It also depends if you are using the stock provided charger as you're supposed to, if you're using usb from the computer, whether you are going through a power converter/ u p s or even if you are using a non standard power output to usb. On know my full charge was about 2.5 hrs from the 30 percent to 100 percent, using the stock charger to outlet through uninterruptible power supply which has a built in power converter/balancer because my electricity is crap ( unincorporated area, old house, old wiring ).
Really though you don't have to worry too much about lithium ion batteries. You really don't want to give it a complete discharge, based on the existing evidence. Apparently this causes a relatively significant shock to the actual chemicals the power the battery. However many people say you do not want to completely charge the battery either, but most battery service management programs, the actual firmware that keeps the batteries going, will stop a charge at 99 percent tell you it is 100 percent and no longer charge above that for this specific reason.
if you look around to the community, many people recommend that you fully discharge battery, after using a program like battery calibration https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nema.batterycalibration and then charge fully to 100 percent anytime you change ROM so the same could be said with a brand new stock unit. Also let's be honest, your device is going to last 2 maybe 3 years. How much damage can you really do but discharging in a few times in the time? also the batteries aren't all that expensive so even if it does significant damage it is still repairable?

Charge time Is a lot less than 8 hours normally. That said, it is still a slow charging phone compared to my previous few phones. However it is not too bad to be a complaint from me. We also have to be aware that the battery is a little bigger than the previous generation of phones, so it would take longer to charge anyway.

Yes this is using the supplied charger. Did a little searching online and it seems that there are others who have this issue. It was noted in the Anantech review as well as the following quote from the Droid Life review:
On a related note, the One takes forever to fully charge. I’m not sure why that is, but no matter what charger I seemed to grab when needing some juice, I found myself checking the status of the battery meter far more often than on other phones in my possession.

My phone needs about 4h to completely charge.
From Anandtech, the rationale is that Qualcomms fast charging is disabled in an effort to preserve the integrity of the battery's longevity; since you know, its sealed and has a repairability rating of 0. The Gs4 will probably crank that fast charge up and the user can replace the batteries as often as he deems necessary.
slow charging time seems a pretty fair trade off for a slow discharging time also right?

It's a pretty big batter, to start. But you're probably not getting much current to the phone. If you charge from the USB on a computer, you're hardly getting any current to the phone so it's going to charge very slowly.
The faster chargers are 2A chargers. I have a 2A car charger that came with my Nexus One car dock I've been using for a long time and it's the fastest charger I've seen out of all of them. All of my phones (and friends' phones) have charged must faster with that charger.
I have a 1.5A AC charger too. It's still not as fast as my 2A car charger, but I'm also inside at that point, so it doesn't matter. But most chargers I've seen are 1A or less. Those are slow.

It's not the battery you're conditioning. It's the battery stats on the phone. The phone needs to "get to know" the battery to accurately describe its status.
Charge time should be a tad under 4 hours on AC, so I would say something appears to be wrong. Unless of course you're doing something heavy on battery) gaming/navigation) during charging.
what scm_crash said. pick up a 2A charger if you really need juice fast, otherwise it's probably designed to simply charge overnight for longevity
I always use my nexus 7 charger (2A) when i need juice on the spot.

actually it's not comparable coz the volume of the battery aren't the same.
you can also check the charger's specs , a 2300mha battery charged by a 1A charger, that's approximately 2.7 hrs.
still, for the first time it took more than half an hour to charge from 99% to 100% and the LED to turn green, that was strange. probably because I deleted the battery stat file for calibration

I no longer have to worry about battery charge thanks to this new fast charge thing. 45 mins after having a low battery I'm at 80%... thank god battery charging has finally progressed to this.
I use my phone for music / radio shows all day long. I can't tell you how happy I am to have this fast charge thing.. on the boat, in the car, at work at home, a 30 min charge and my phone is ready to go for HOURS!
Thank you to samsung and the note 4 for FINALLY putting a phone out there that is awesome!!

I agree but I rather swap my battery. When I get down to lets say 5% I don't have to worry about plugging it in. It takes less than a minute to go from 0% to 100% and it's less strain on the charging port and circuit. Plus if you still want to use the phone you don't have to be tethered to a cable.
+1 I love it. Swapping out the batter. LOL Not so much.
Battery swapping really sucks if you have a case on the phone. I vote for fast charging. Beautiful thing! I just need to get a fast car charger and I can charge my phone fully during my commute to work.

As an electrical engineer, seeing statements like this makes me cringe. I can absolutely assure you that there is no "strain" on the charging circuit, or battery, or anything else for that matter.
The only thing I could say is, possibly, the reduced battery life span due to the additional charge cycles. But charge cycles for modern Li-ion is already really high. But even if I were to entertain the fact that the battery might need to be replaced sooner, who cares. You are buying another battery NOW, vs the possibility of buying another battery in a year or so.
As far as personal preference goes, if a spare battery is your thing, go for it. But please try not to perpetuate the idea that the fast charging circuit or battery can't handle the charging.
I'm more than happy to go over the physics and electrical theory on how charging works. You might be interested to know that in a lab setting we can get charging rates as fast as 1 minute per 1000mAh with minimal heat build up (the major hurdle in improving charging rates)
Fast charging is nothing new. A similar concept are large capacitors, like a camera flash. They charge in seconds. The major engineering challenge is controlling the discharge rate, in most cases the heat build up is limiting factor.
Don't be surprised if the note 5 charges in 0 to 100 in less than 5 min.
Fast Charging + Killer battery life = One Happy Customer

i love everything about this post, btw. i'd love to know the physics and electrical theory if you ever want to share. it would probably help me to understand which is better for the phone, not that i need it right now, but i'm sure it would be beneficial to have that knowledge. i am one that is a fan of the fast charging, but i've also been looking at Samsung's spare battery charger too. the Korean Note 4 variants actually came WITH the spare battery charger (lucky ducks) but it's going for $45 ish right now on Samsung's website. might not be a bad investment at all, even though my battery life is averaging 12 - 15 hours on a singe charge.

This is true. I had an Energizer battery charger that could charge my AA or AAA batteries in 15 minutes. They got very hot though. This was in the 90's.

I had something like this as well. Mine had a fan on it that would attempt to keep things cool. I have an Ego lawn mower that can charge the HUGE battery pack that goes in it up by 50% in 15 minutes, and it sits on a big charging base with a huge, loud fan. That's a little different than charging a cell phone battery or AA/AAA batteries.
+1 on the fast charge thing. To me, that's revolutionary.
Fast charging is awesome, but I really don't use it. My battery life is so great the it easily lasts me the whole day with moderate usage. I usually end the day with 30+% left. The fast charging is an awesome feature, but i really have no use for it.
Someone was saying having fast charging checked depletes battery quicker. Ain't that some bs?
Has anyone given any numbers as to how slow / the rate of wireless charging is on this phone? I love fast charging but I want wireless charging as well.
I agree with a couple of these posts. I have moderate use on my phone and usually end the day at 40% or higher. However, I love having spare batteries that I can just pop in and be at 100%. Just ordered 3 plus wall charger for $20 shipped. Hard to beat having 3 full charges at hand if you don't have a chance to plug in for a while.
Battery life is great on this phone........period!!!

I believe most wireless chargers are 1 amp output. The stock wall charger is 2 amp so I'm guessing it would take about 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours to fully charge on wireless,I'm not expert though.

I do not doubt the usefulness of it, and I know it will come in handy some days. It's just my normals days I have battery to spare.
