[Q] Galaxy S4 standby doesnt work - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i've had the S4 since it got released and i like it,
but for some reason the standby doesnt work at all.. i have it set to turn off the screen after 30 secs of idle and it does not work.
anyone else having this issue?

mine works fine. see what apps have been installed. maybe some app requires not to go in standby and prevents the screen to go off

Have similar problem - screen do not off completely. Does not mateer what time I chose, does not matter if smart stay is on or off. I do not have it's icon visible in the status bar whet it is off. Anyway screen is always on. Any help?

Same problem here. The phone just dims its screen but it never shuts it off.
This is quite annoying when the phone lights up to show the low batt warning and just drains all its remaining energy. Perfect.

Try disabling all smart stay options (smart pause could still be on).

Seems that I found the reason. But still do not have permanent solution. After restart screen went off without problem. After running some application it became constantly on again. When I closed some applications (long press home button and swipe open applications) screen also turned off normally. So probably some application makes such a problem. Have to check which one.

Blue notification led stuck on.

Ok, this is really starting to annoy me. My notification light is stuck on blue ALL THE TIME. I have no notifications and restarting doesn't fix it. Whenever there's actually something for to be notifying me of it also pulses the colour it should be and mixes with the blue light. It's weird. I'll upload a picture in a minute.

my Wife's phone has the same problem. I have yet to figure out what is causing it. I've done everything except a factory reset since she doesn't want me to do that. I did notice when I installed the last update from Google while it was rebooting the blue light stayed on.

No, I don't want to factory reset either... Might try reinstalling the entire 4.3 factory image without wiping my personal data. Tell me if you figure it out

OK, last night I updated a whole lot if apps and this morning the light was finally off. I can't see how the apps could have been the problem because the light stayed on even in recovery mode.
Anyway, I'm happy now because it's gone.

Screen brightness-throttling....

Hey guys
Something that's really annoying me is my phone still changes the display brightness level with everything turned off/manual
No power saving mod
Manual brightness
Screen mod standard
Stock browser is on manual
WTF is going on. Surely others have experienced this?
How do we turn it off
If your note 3 gets too hot it will reduce the screen brightness.....
Display Settings
Automatic contrast off!

I have never seen this on any other device
It happens only 10min into use with just general browsing
Automatic contrast is already off
So is everyone happy that this is happening?
I cant believe no one else is bothered by it!!

It was bothering me A LOT but now something worse took over, the phone keeps rebooting and I've had to reset and start all over again and it's still happening. So the dimming is annoying but not nearly as annoying as not being able to use the phone at all!
I wrote about this throttling a few times here during the last days, search for my recent posts! in short: this throttling also happens when all auto brightness functions are turned off, and even if you manually set the lowest brightness! it depends on CPU load, thermal envelope and/or power-draw! I personally find it very annoying, especially because it happens also on lowest levels...

Moves app - it still uses a lot of battery

As reported in some Nexus 5 reviews as well as on the Moves google play page reviews, the Moves app that comes on our phones seems to use quite a bit of battery. If you installed it, you can take a look on your own phone by pulling down settings and clicking on the battery icon.
Yes, I know they talk about how it uses much less power than other ways of tracking movement, but it still seems to be a noticeable amount.
According to Moves help, you can turn if off inside the Moves app settings by turning off tracking. At first I thought it came on the phone, but as others pointed out I installed it from google play..
I don't see any apps called moves? Is it hidden?

I must of turned it off some how... stock unrooted here.. i dont see it anywhere, not even in settings - apps - all.
*edit*
ahh it doesn't come with our phones, i dont have it installed even.
You actually have to download it from the play store. It doesn't come with the phone.
Crikey didn't know it used that much battery :/ might get rid of it lol

I see at least 10% battery drain due to Moves. Can't tell whether this is supposed to be expected.
Runtastic Pedometer has been doing much better for me battery-wise. Can leave it running all day and it is at the bottom of my list. Somethings not working right with Moves.
If you turn off tracking within the Moves app, won't that defeat the purpose of the Moves app? Ouch... Just checked mine and it's at 36%. I think i'm going to remove it for a while.

Stuck in landscape mode!!

Anyone else come upon this? It seems I'm stuck in landscape mode. Checked all settings. I can even rotate the screen to be upside down and no change. Wtf?

I'd be lucky to have my phone stuck in landscape mode Cuz usually you can't do that on the launcher without a rotation locker app. But anyway, try restarting your phone. If your lock screen goes sideways immediately, or your boot animation goes sideways before the lock screen, it has to be a system setting or kernel declaration. If your lockscreen stays portrait for >5 seconds but then goes sideways, it's an APP that's doing it!! Check for any games you've installed, any games that lock sideways and force quite them+clear data. See if that does it.
Post back your results, and I'll try to help you more,

I tied all the usual tricks. Restarts, battey pull, eben went into bootloader and cleared cache. No go. Have no clue how it hppened and couldnt seem to remedy. I ended up doing a factory restore. All good for now.
Forgot to backup my apps and so its taking a bit longer to get back to my old setup

That's weird.. a problem that shouldn't require a factory reset. I'm sure it was some app with load-on-boot privilege or some setting somewhere. I'd still like to know what caused it.

I couldn't find anything. I looked everywhere. It was weird because i had just pulled it out of my pocket to check the time. Lockscreen looked the same as always. I noticed i had a missed sms so I unlocked it to respond and was then stuck in landscape. I didn't notice if it went right to landscape or not. Funny thing is I could rotate the screen 180 and the image would be totally inverted. Made me think the gyroscope sensor was on the fritz. Wasn't there a way they could be calibrated in the past?
what launcher are you using?
Switch back to stock TouchWiz to validate if it's hardware issue - but it's most likely just a setting in your launcher.

Always on display is weird

Anyone notice always all display isnt always on. When i put my phone in my pocket and then pull it out its completely black screen.
Does it need to be on while in your pocket?

That's not correct.
The screen is off in your pocket, and as soon as it is removed, the clock comes on.
I don't have to push anything to get it to show the clock.

That's Correct On My AT&T S7 Edge if i pull it out from my case on belt it goes on right away , don't have to touch any buttons, if i put it back in case from my belt goes back off which thats normal!
Always on display is awesome! The average person looks at their device 150 times a day just to look at the time, why not have it there for you as soon as you look at the phone. Plus it only drains the battery 5% the entire day.
There's a setting to turn the screen off completely when it notices that it's in a dark place, like your pocket. It prevents you from butt dialing, etc. This feature can be shut off so the always on display won't shut down.
