would love to see S4 function on our note 8.0 - Galaxy Note 8.0 (Tablet) General

Just went to the Samsung shop today, many S4s are in stock and waiting for people to grab it lol.
So I gave it a try and playing around with new functions, such as S Translate, it looks like google translate lol nothing really impressed me there. but I do love the one with eyes scrolling page while browsing, even though it kinds of slow but it just awesome.
So I wish to see them on our beloved note 8.0 lol that's all ;p

I have an s4 as well which i am selling, but i would like to get the air gesture and smart scroll function on our note 8, i would assume note 8 has the sensor for it since we have that smart stay and that air view with our pen

All of those can be ported as soon as I get the device. I.E il be building android 4.2 which will be our base to port s4 rom.

I remember reading somewhat that Samsung will be porting some of the features to their older flagships I.e. Note 2 and S 3. Wish I could remember where though. Can't remember if it was a reliable source or just some fudd blog.

The S3 may not support this feature, due to some hardware limitations (sensors maybe), or its just a kernel thing..

Yeah thats pretty much of what I wanted too. Anyways I examined the S4 kernel source code, its there, reference to gestures, maybe it can be ported on 4.1.2 (no need of specific rom)

Yeah, I hope these will become available on my note as well.

Well, the S4 has a new infrared, which increases its range to detect from beyond the screen. Maybe we can use the proximity

If you mean proximity sensor I think someone mentioned that the Wifi-only model doesn't have a proximity sensor.

I believe the SGS4 has TWO Proximity Sensors for the Hand Gesture features...one on each side of the earpiece. There is also an Ambient Light Sensor for auto display dimming, and the Front Facing Camera. The FFC (maybe combined with the proximity sensors?) is used for Smart Stay/Scrolling. The IR Blaster is used for Remote Control of your TV/DVR/STEREO using the Peel or Watch On apps.
Here is a closeup photo of the S4:

I don't think that the Note 8.0 3G+WiFi version has the Second Proximity Sensor that would be used for the Hand Gestures and possibly Smart Scrolling? Here is a photo of the front of the 3G Note 8.0. I see a Light Sensor, a Proximity Sensor, and a FFC:

This would be disappointing if its true, I would be happy even if only the vertical scroll air gesture could be done on the note 8. the smart scrolling is useless I have it turned off on the S4.

You can sort of get the air gesture capability by using the S pen and pressing the tip with your finger while holding it close (but not touching) the screen. Works well for scrolling. Selecting icons takes a little bit of practice as holding the s pen tip down too long results in a long press (on my 5110 it's real touchy).

LOL! Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing--it would be really nifty to be able to browse the internet without touching the screen (or the S-Pen), but just with air gestures (for when hands are dirty). It is too bad it seems like we won't see that functionality on the Note 8.

Instead of using the proximity sensor...
What about looking at using the Wacom Digitizer tech instead?
So the digitizer layer tracks the S Pen in a magnetic field... it would be a matter of determining what it is inside the S Pen that's being tracked... then perhaps buying some cheap alternative pens and removing parts.
Perhaps there is something small that could be stuck to a fingernail?

That's a clever and fascinating idea.... I'd be very interested to hear the results of any experimenting that you or others do with that.

Yeah. Gorgeous screen of Note 8 now only needs S4 features and it will flatten all records.

Galaxy S II vs Galaxy Note

I just got my Note yesterday and spent a great deal of time with the device. I figure this might be a good place to share the experience
1. Pentile display complaints on Note is a moot point. Specially around the curved text edges, it looks like Note is noticeably sharper than the S2
2. Feel is very similar. Note is pretty much a bigger slightly quicker S2 with a larger screen/battery
3. SAMOLED HD is gorgeous
4. Sad to say this but i'm already used to the device size and S2 feels tiny every time i go back to it
5. Onscreen keyboard is easier to use due to size and spacing (it's probably the best onscreen keyboard that i've used and this includes the 10.1 and ipad)
6. S-Pen is awesome and it works much better than any other stylus that i've used including the capacitive ones

I use my SGS2 when out running with RunKeeper, great for voice feedback , music and the odd photo when needed...

Can you use the Notes stylus on the SGS2 screen ?

How about fluid and smoothness? as good as S2?
Is it a pain to use in one hand i.e reaching the far side of the screen? or do you need to use 2 hands?
I read somewhere on here that bigger screens dont actually mean more text on the page, its just larger text. If you load the same page in both browsers do you actually see a lot more on the page of the Note?

If the screen is bigger, but the resolution is the same (e.g. Galaxy S1 and Galaxy S2, the latter has bigger screen but same 800x480 resolutio, so the view will be the same on both, with S2 text being larger). However, the Note has higher 720p resolution, so it should fit more.
Sounds good.
I prefer big screens (100inch screen via projector in my living room lol) so i would love the Note. Im gunna pop down to city centre on the weekend and try get a bit of play time with one in the stores.
The modding scene doesnt look very big on XDA at the moment, i guess thats cos its still new though.
I needed a second phone and was about to get a Note. Then I found out it doesn't have Gorilla glass and some users have already reported it easily gets scratched. I hate screen protectors. I agree with the rest of its wonders, but no Gorilla means no phone to me.

Btw, gorilla glass does scratch and it all depends on what your device gets exposed to

Stylus Support (Active Stylus)

Hi, Samsung did not gave us SPen but i think this tablet has stylus support. I don't own it so i can not test it. Maybe you can.
Samsung Galaxy Tablet 7.7 uses this touchscreen chip: Atmel's MXT768E. I've got the info from here.
Another article about this chipset, here. It was provided by appelflap.
And if i read it correctly you can use their stylus: maXStylus.

The problem is that this stylus is not for sale right now. By reading other forums i have learned that you can use Motorola's new stilus.
Unfortunatly this stylus has a thick tip ~3mm. You can buy it from here.
I hope that someone has this stylus and test it on this tablet.
Another problem could be that you need Android 4.x in order to use the stylus. I am not sure about this.
So, please, get a compatible pen and test this theory!
Also you can press "Thanks".
Interesting. We'll just have to see whether or not this feature is actually enabled on the 7.7
If it's the same technology as is present in the Note, then I can definitely confirm that it does not work. The S-pen does nothing on the 7.7
I would think that there is not an active digitizer just a capacitive screen. A capacitive stylus would work but not an active.

I think that need ICS on the tab because it has native stylus support. Honeycomb does not. On the SGN Samsung embedded the stylus support.

I'm pretty sure there's no digitizer on the 7.7 so regardless of whether or not ICS has native support for it, if the hardware isn't there then only capacitive styluses will work with it. I mean, if there was a digitizer wouldn't Samsung advertise that as a feature?

Well, since the s-pen basically uses the necessary technology to work on the alleged hidden feature of the 7.7, and assuming that Honeycomb's lack of native support for an active digitizer is the only thing keeping the s-pen from functioning on the 7.7, then I suppose we'll all just have to wait until the 7.7 gets ICS. Maybe then we can try to see if the s-pen works with it or not. Until then, really, all we have is speculation.
P.S. I also have a GNote, so I volunteer to try as soon as ICS is officially available from Samsung for the 7.7

Well, maybe you're right. The keylayout directory contains a layout file with the mapping of something that looks certainly like a pen:
key 544 PEN WAKE
key 545 ERASER WAKE

Edit:
Exciting. Did some additional research.
First. The maxtouch e series touch screen seems to support a passive conductive stylus of 2mm. http://www.atmel.com/microsite/maxtouch_eseries/default.asp
Second: they also seem to support another, more precise stylus. To activate that stylus only a "software update and no hardware changes" is required. http://www.electronicsweekly.com/Ar...ers-0.25mm-accuracy-from-capacitive-touch.htm
According to the same article Ice Cream Sandwich stylus support seems to be supported by the amtel chip.

Nice finding , i have updated the first post with your link.
http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=10571
They clearly say that a digitizer is a separate piece to the touch screen
3. Digitizer
The digitizer interacts with the S-Pen to sense the pen-tip’s location and the amount of pressure. By establishing an electromagnetic field, it blocks the noise and magnetism through the shield plate.

Something like that. I don't know much about electronics but it seems to be a stylus that interacts directly with the capacitive screen and not with a digitizer. Not only as a capacitive stylus (they already support that up to a 2mm thickness - which is pretty thin also, that's why the motorola stylus might work) but also by sending out signals that it is a stylus and not for example a finger. No clue however how they manage to get a 0.25mm precision with this. But it seems that they have found a technology to do that with capacitive technology.
Edit : I saw that the xoom 2 stylus is also active. If the xoom 2 has the same chip, it might get active stylus support after the ics update also. As google is working close together with motorola, this might be the way they gonna unleash the stylus support in ics
Again, I have no clue. Lol
Haha same kind of thread in the transformer prime forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446655
Prime also seems to have the amtel e series touchscreen chip

I have all of them except the one with eraser. You forgot the ET-S110EBEGSTA "S-Pen and Holder."
Of them, the one that feels best (not to hold but to use) is the BT S-Pen. It feels most natural against the display and doesn't feel draggy like the others sometimes can. The rest more or less feel the same against the display. The S-Pen and Holder feels best in the hand.
I have #3 and really like it.
I know that the microphone on the HM-5100 is designed for using the tablet as a phone but it would be great if somebody could design an app that functioned similarly to the LiveScribe Echo Smart Pen.
I've had this thing for a few years now and it's amazing for taking notes in seminars.

When you say they feel draggy against the screen did you try the white tip that came with the note. Because the black and white is rubber and white is plastic so it just slides across the screen with no friction.

The S pen holder for the Note 1 doesnt support the extra pressure sensitivity, do that leaves the one with the eraser or the Bluetooth one.
But why would u need a pen with a mic if you already have one in the tablet?
That leaves the eraser one as the best.

Because holding a tablet up for a call, trying to put in earphones for a call is a hassle. With the BT S-Pen it can be left in the pocket, like a normal pen, while the tablet is in your bag. If a call comes through the pen vibrates to let you know about it and its a hell of a lot easier, not to mention quicker to answer a call by just hitting he answer button. A bluetooth headset would also suffice but who wants to be wearing that around all day....

It's really just a BT headset contained in a pen. It beeps and vibrates when you receive a call. By pressing the button on it you can initiate a call or use the S-Voice functions if you have it installed. It's good for occasional use. I wouldn't use it as my primary phone or even as a replacement for a BT headset if I was using the Note for a pre-planned conference call.
I just use the speakers. I know that won't always work, but neither will a pen.

No. If you look at the photo in the op you can see that the size is slightly larger and easier to hold, which is what makes it a better stylus.
Does any user note 2 using the bluetooth pen on their note 2 here? How does it feel? Does it ok or off set when u write something using it? I have s pen with eraser for 10.1..i use it on my note 2 and found it off set when want to write something n i could not found way to calibrate it

Sensors on Samsung galaxy s4

Hi All ,
As far as i have noticed that there is an additional sensor on top when compared to Samsung galaxy note 2
Now my question is what is that sensor what feature are related to it i am suspecting is could be the Eye control feature ?
The eye control features seem to rely on the front-facing camera like with the S3 and Note 2, while Air Gestures relies on some infrared sensor above the display. As for Floating Touch, I have no idea how that works, but Samsung mentioned it's down to some entirely new screen tech (maybe it's just what the Note 2 does with the s-pen set to detect fingers instead, or maybe it's something deeper).
The S4 also has a thermometer and humidity sensor. It will be interesting to see how good they are and whether developers can up with interesting apps which use them.

And a pedometer to add to that.

Research! before posting things.
Xperia sola had this feature months back. not this matured but fine.
It's called self induction. It's a capacitive panel which has a stronger field extending beyond the glass.
the primary mutual capacitive panel has a less range but more accurate field. Hence it supports multi touch.
So two capacitive panels under one sheet of glass. That is impressive. The air view , gestures can all be written on to this . It explains why samsung uses 'barely' everywhere it talks about air view. Because its capacitive.
Infrared or IR is way less controllable ( You will need a strip of it on either sides - with visible opening for one fact).

Maybe you should take your own advice. There is no official information on how the Floating Touch works aside from Samsung saying it uses special screen technology. Here's a quote from GSMArena:
The Galaxy S4 has also borrowed a page from the Galaxy Note II book and features hover touch. Since there's no stylus here, it's made to work with fingers, giving you a small blue dot on the screen whenever you hold your finger a centimeter or two away from it. This makes it easier to avoid wrong presses when handling small items in the web browser and also enables some nice features like previewing the content of a folder in the gallery without opening it...While it does use the Note II SDK, Samsung says that it relies on special tech exclusive to the Galaxy S4 display.

As for the Air Gestures, Samsung also said an IR sensor was used, and the sensor is clearly visible above the display alongside the front-facing camera and other sensors:
The other novelty on the Samsung Galaxy S4 is called Air gestures. Those use the Galaxy S4 new IR gestures sensor and work in the web browser, music player and even in the dialer. The Air gestures allow you to command your phone by simply waiving in front of it.

The answers is almost in the second post.. and samsung hasnt said exactly how the floating gestures have been implemnted even when asked by tech sites.. and by the way the note 1, 2 and s3 has a barometer too.. probably s4 has one too

S4 INFO
quoted from gsmarena, all the mystery about new sensors are now cleared
I believe the Air-Touch thingy is simply related to the touch-screen panel's sensitivity, or at least can be achieved this way.
I seem to recall that this was achieved a while ago in a cm-based ROM, on a device that doesn't ship with this kind of feature (like the Xperia Sola) by cranking-up the touchscreen sensitivity at kernel level, this way, it would have a detection range wider than the thickness of the glass that covers it, thus registering touch events even with the finger a few centimeters away from the screen.
EDIT: found the post, it was on Galaxy S Plus: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/floating-touch-on-the-samsung-galaxy-s-plus/
I'll however take a look at how the Samsung APIs handle this feature and if they rely on a specific sensor/set of sensors.
This might be worth investigating for my participation in the Samsung Smart App Challenge 2013.

Does the S-Pen work with the Galaxy S7?

If so, im definitely getting the S7. Thanks

Didn't think so as it would need the digitiser from the Note. But does anyone know if it has the extra screen sensitivity setting that the Galaxy S5 had. I remember with that phone I was amazed that i could write on the screen really easily with a ball point pen or pencil, it was no S-Pen but having the precision of a pencil is so much better than a generic fat stylus. It didn't leave much mess on the phone either, just had to remember to not press down hard.
It would be great if the S7 had this feature as I'm selling my Note 4 to get the Edge.

Yeah, I also want to know if S7 has this feature by using a normal pencil as a stylus.. Anyone has tried this yet? Also want to upgrade from Note 4 to S7 Edge if confirm can use this feature..
I bought a note 5 stylus from eBay to try it out. Problem is it's from China so it will take about 4 weeks to get here.
Just moved from a Note 4 to a S7 Edge (SM-9350). The Note 4's pen does NOT work on my S7.
Let me know if you want some additional information.

If you use nova launcher add a action to home screen under settings is a page that says s-pen and this is what is in it.

triyed with a raw piece of metal (very subtle) and confirm that the screen respond almost like my note 4 with s-pen. -> it must be conductive (take care to not scratch the screen).
Used a paperclip and it works with the phone..lol
Got a Note 5 and S7 Edge both.
Doesn't work.
You will need one of these!

How about a normal pencil? Will the screen respond to it?

Well considering my wife has the note 5 I think not. She needed a replacement so how is it a waste? Before you start to judge you need to know the situation first.

oh well now you make sense lol
I gave the Note 5 pen a try and it doesn't work at all. Won't register a single click probably cause of the fine point tip. I also tried with my regular Amazon basics pen which I use for my Windows tablet and it works just fine.
Urh
It will never work, the Spen does not use your normal Stylus.
Normal Stylus is normally a conductor to pass your electromagnetic thought the pen
(thats most finger detection)
Samsung USED to have a GLOVE mode, So this turned the Screen Touch to Pressure sensitivity,.
(A pencil would work in this case)
You would be required to get a conductor to use as a Stylus i.e. use the Static proof paper to make your own Stylus, It works)
The Spen used hardware for detection, Hence the Hovering of the Spen showed it cursor, the Press hard and less showed worked for Thickness thiness,
It also counted how high the pen was off the screen
(Worked with the sPen SDK Before)
