Wifi Issues on wireless N - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Hi all,
Does anyone else have issues using their i337 on wireless N? When mine connects, then after a minute or 2 the phone is not able to get access to the internet. I have to reset the router or cycle the wireless on the phone to get it back. If I force the router to only use wireless G, the phone wifi works great.... I have also tried resetting the router to factor, but no change....
any advice/thoughts?
Thank you in advance!

What Model and brand is your router? Your most likely going to need a new router, as it Would be its fault and not the phone. If its D-Link then that should be self explanatory lol

I'm having the same issue with my S4 and my D-Link DIR-655 router. Wireless N allows me to connect to the router and obtain an IP address on the network, but I get no internet connection. If I default the router to only use g and b, it connects fine with internet.

Your just going to have to get a new router. D-Link mostly the older ones are nortrius for having issues like this. Depends on your internet speed and what you do over wireless more than 90% of people dont even need wireless N

D-Link = bad router. Google it and you'll see all the problems it has been causing people for years.
As far as Wireless N, it's new enough that I'm guessing that Samsung and the router people both have some updating before it's as good as it should be

Yea The S4 has AC support I think, Which is the NEW standered. So It would deffantly have 100% Wireless N support haha

My Netgear router is only 6 months old, and doesn't have N support, since it requires multiple IO transmission. And MIMO has been a mess for manufacturers. So A) it might not work well from the phone side and B) any D-link router would probably work as well as you'd expect.

Its only G?? Wireless N has been the latest standered since 2007. Anything more than $20 for a wireless router thats not Wireless N today you paid too much. Bur AC is a WHOLE need thing. The Cheapest AC router is $160 and I think is kind of pointless for a mobile phone.

2009. And I didn't need MIMO since nothing I had supported it. And you're right about AC, I'm not upgrading the router just to get that - G doesn't carry through the walls in my house well enough to use. AC probably would, but I don't need the power draw.

I have an RT-N16 and love it, the main thing I look for is Gigabit ethernet I have a server and a lot of big transfers are needed. I have a network of about 25 total devices.

I'm also having this problem. Why are people so quick to say it is the router's fault? Every other wireless device in my house works flawlessly, every person who visits me and connects to my wi-fi has zero issues. My GS4 is the only thing to ever have issues in fact.
I'm running DD-WRT on a Linksys WRT160-Nv3. Linksys and D-Link are probably the most commonly sold consumer router's here in the states. Your average person goes to Walmart, buys the 60 dollar router, and leaves. If Samsung can't design a phone that works with these common types of routers, then the problem is on their end.
Telling someone they need to go out and replace their router is really not an answer, using the reason "D-Links suck, your router is the problem" is opinion, not fact.

Problems with Athena wifi and Blekin N router

I have recently upgraded fromt he Blekin Pre N router to the Belkin N router at work. Now for some reason my Athena refuses to connect to it. I know the router works fine because my laptop connects without any issues. I have the router configured to broadcast as B, G, and N on channel 10. The Athena sees the router just fine but it refuses to connect to it. At home my Netgear G router connects flawlessly along with the old Pre N (before it broke). I was reading an article about someone having the same issues and said he flashed his N router to look like it was a Linksys, but the person didn't get into details as to how this was done. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
this is completely the wrong place as it is a router issue not a phone issue, but I don't care im just telling it like it is.
The only way doing what your proposing would work is if the 2 routers (belkin and linksys) were fundamentally the same, (which is possible as it would not be the first time a rouer Mfr has made a router for somebody else). you need to be very careful though and find out which linksys router tallys up with your belking, as flashing the wrong firmware will turn your router into a fancy doorstop ! (although it is still under warrany so I guess you could return it to the store). in reality you want to be patient and wait for belkin to release the same firmware update for their router, it probably wont be long, as they are probably just waiting to get it through from linksys, but with all the linksys branding removed and belkin branding put in its place.
So in the mean tme there is no work around?
I have a similar experience recently, and it's very specific to the Belkin routers and the Athena.
I have the Belkin Pre-N router, and it works fine with my HTC Wizard and Kaiser, as well as all my computers connected to it.
However, when I received my new x7501 recently, it would not connect to the Belkin router. The Athena would see the Belkin, but it would not connect. I assumed I had a defective WiFi circuit in the Athena, but HTC support sugested I try the Athena on another WiFi network. I did so, and to my surprise, it connected.
Fortunately, I have two routers, and I re-enabled the Linksys B/G router and my Athena works fine with it.
It's interesting that ToolTalk found the Pre-N Belkin worked with his Athena, maybe I just need to get the newset firmware for my Pre-N, and it will work with my Athena.

Yes I did update the Pre N to the latest firmware. To be quite honest that router's pretty cool. Came back this past Monday from the wk end break and it would not connect and external HD connected to it would not show on the network. Hence, I went out to get the new Belkin N router. This was the reason for the upgrade. Had I known it would've been an issue I would've got a Netgear instead. Unfortunately I can't let the boss know that I want to return the router because my phone won't connect to it's WIFI (lol). However I might try and get the Pre N working again and withing the 15 day return period. Thanks for the heads up hopefully, Belkin or HTC comes out with a work around.
I'm glad you started this thread ToolTalk. I just updated the firmware in my Pre-N router, and my Athena connects to it now.
I prefer only having one wireless router in the house to avoid interferrence. So, this is good.

have u checked if your router is sending/recieving B and G signals.
u usually have an option to have just N, B, G or all the signals running

Xperia does not support Draft N. Only B & G Standards. Do what Ganondolf suggested or regret your purchase.

You need to create a "guest" connection. This means your router has to send out two signals. One for your primary users, and one for your guests. Log into your router, new routers should have a guest mode. Enable it, give it a name, assign a pw, and your phone should recognize.
all hope is gone!
i dont think there is a solution to this problem, i confirmed that my router mode is set to B G N, and my phone does not detect the network, however when i set the router to G, it works with the x1. i called belkin and they said that the frequency of the modem is too high for to phone and told me to set the modem to G, however i refused. I bought an N router for a reason for Gods sake. If i was going to set it to G, might as well saved some money and purchased a G router. SAD! looks like nothing can be done.
i have no idea how to do the guest mode, will that work tho?
Which Belkin model do you have?
Most are supported by DD-WRT (alternative, open source firmware) A lot of problems in OEM firmware are solved through the use of DD-WRT, as it offers more options and stability (such as max simultaneous connections for linksys routers)
To check if your router is supported: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/dd-wrt/hardware.html
try disable extensions/turbo mode etc, this helps alot on dlink routers
and leave b,g,n on, check if you can change the channels they are running on etc

No such problem exist with my draft n d-link router?
I doubt that you must switch to G only in order for X1 to connect
In terms of "FREQUENCY" they mentioned, mainly there are two types of settings you can mess with
More advanced draft N router has two major different frequencies - 2.4 Ghz, or 5 Ghz. And if you router is using 5Ghz, then X1 obvious can't connect to the router coz 5Ghz requires the latest draft n technology. However there should always be settings where you can just switch it back to 2.4 Ghz. Personally 2.4 and 5 Ghz doesn't make much difference unless you have 20 wiresless devices all using 2.4 Ghz at home.
Another type of "frequencies" are sometimes called "channels" ... e.g. you will see some wireless hotspot are on CH1, CH2, .... and it should go all the way up to CH 13. These channels operate at frequencies very close to the major frequency, e.g. CH1 = 2.412, CH2=2.417, ... , CH13=2.472. However it has been reported and personally tested that X1 seems to have problems with channels higher than 11.
This isn't a surprising problem because these high channels are designed for 108Mbps wireless adapter and clearly X1 isn't capable of such high speed.
(amusement at "Firefall!": I don't think it's necessary to "regret" purchasing X1 just because it doesn't support draft N? Have you tried using high performance in WIFI settings and realize how fast the battery runs out? How long do you think the battery will last if they place a draft N WIFI chipset into the device? And what sort of HD videos are you planning to watch on your phone that requires draft N speed of 300 Mbps?)
Hence, you should try setting your router to 2.4Ghz mode (if you are currently on 5Ghz) and change it to channels below 11. And your X1 should be able to connect to the router
I have my X1i running with my Belkin N1 Vision Router working perfectly. Check your hardware son .
I have the Belkin N+ router...
http://www.gooddvdstuff.com/news/files.php?file=belkin__109732273.jpg
And my Xperia does not connect to the router unless I create a "guest" mode. So I broadcasted a secondary guest connection and it works.

not sure what to say bud, maybe changing from 5ghz to 2.5ghz might work if u have a option but like u said if your pc is using n then u dont want to go down to g just so your phone connets.
ps. if your pc does not use n (or any other device) u getting a n router is pointless as even if your pc is connecting, its doing it through g not n.
ps2. i always go for netgear routers, seem to work better for me bud

wifi signal, but no internet.

Hi
I just received my htc hero, and I really love it.
The only problem is, is that when i try to browse the web it doesnt load webpages. My WiFi is signal is good, i even removed the WEP key but still no succes, and on my old iPhone I can browse the web using the same WiFi connection
Does anyone know what the problem is?
Mike
Can you use the internet on your pc? Is your router setup properly?
yep everything is good..
does obtain an address ??
yes its 192.168.1.101
also if connected, select the menu key and hit advanced, make sure its not set to a fixed (static) address unless you need that.
I have mine set to 14 channels too... not that I probably need that...
i did that and it is not static also set it on 14 channels but no effect
well i had that issue when i just got my hero phone. everything was fine, signal was excellent, dhcp was ok , and it even got an ip but there was no data connection present. The only solution was to update the router's driver. In my case, it was a d link 524.try that too. ( just to precise that i had no problems with my previous phones with the router)
Another thing is to try setting the router to g mode only.

what type of router do u have? u might want to search for a hacked driver for it. o know for a fact that u can find a lot for linksys.
try to connect to other AP's just to confirm that the problem is a compatibility issue bet ur phone and ur specific router and not the phone itself.
I got the same problem.
at home it works great with the router.
But at another router by my girl,
it connects to the router but the Internet doesn't work.
Sometimes it works for about 3 minutes.
I couldn't find the problem and her laptop works great
with that router.
The router is a Sitecom Wl-173.
Do you have the same router?
I am having a similar issue. It will work for a few minutes and then although the router signal says good I get no data coming through.
This is only a recent development though as I upgraded from a Linksys WRT54G router to a Linksys WRT160NL (which is Wirless-N), now I know that the Hero doesn't support N but the router is set to mixed mode as I have more G devices than N in my house so it should still work fine.
I will try tonight though swapping the router over to just work in G mode and see how I get on.
Its been suggested that the stock Linksys firmware on all models has issues with the Hero, which is why my old router was OK as it was running Tomato firmware instead of stock Linksys.
I guess I'll just have to wait until a 3rd party releases one for the WRT160NL
I had the same problem with my D-Link 524, i changed it to a netgear and internet has worked perfectly on my Hero since. It is a problem with the D-Link firmware and how it communicates with the Hero.
I had a similar problem with my router. What did it for me was to disable all security stuff (WEP / WPA) AND access control (i.e. define which devices may connect to your router). Then try to surf via hero. If surfing works, switch back on security stuff, surfing should still work. At least it did for me.

The wifi-stack in the kernel on the hero doesn't work well with many APs. With D-link I've found problems when the boxes run in 802.11n with b/g compatibility. The results are best with the AP locked at 802.11g.

Nexus 4 Wifi Compatible Routers list

Hello
My nexus 4 is working fine on all Wifi networks i connect to except in where i live.
It connects fine and got an IP, but there is no internet connection on my phone.
We got a router called "EUSSO" ( i live in a shared apt and never knew our router brand until i started the debugging)
I tried many configs change on the router but didn't help, always same issue.
All my friends connects normally, and my old HTC worked fine.
My friend told me there is a list of compatible routers for the Nexus 4 and this router probably not compatible.
Can you please provide that list? i need to check if it is indeed incompatible.
And if you have any trick to apply and fix my issue will be great.
i am on android 4.2.2. and not rooted.
Thank you in advance

This list will go on forever as there are routers/etc sold every day that doesn't like *insert random device here*.
There's a whole line of Linksys routers where it would kick off everyone on wifi if a PS3 connects to it. I had a Linksys that didn't like my Motorola Droid, didn't much care for a few random USB wifi dongles too. A dlink DIR615 that didn't like my Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4.
There's just always going to be one and I really don't think a concrete list will ever surface.
I hate wonky routers as much as I hate printers D:
Buy a cheap dd-wrt compatible router and use that as a client bridge or similar setup so you can connect.
Or try one of the kernels with the new Wi-Fi drivers.
im not rooted so i cant change kernels.
well i guess i will try that bridge thing or completely forget about connecting to wifi and use 3g

Wifi Issues

For some reason, my HTC One handles my wifi fine...but my S4 is sloooooooow.

Which wi-fi router are you using? I had a D-Link which would not work with the S4 and it turns out that there are compatibility issues between D-Link and Samsug phones. It would work everywhere else, AT&T hotspots, my work w-fi, etc. I had to run out and get a new router. It now works flawlessly.
No problem here, glad yours resolved itself.

It's a known issue in the sense that there are compatibility problems between D-Link routers and Galaxy phones.
I have not really had issues with my 4500. After some deep searching I was able to get it to work with the right settings. So I will keep my router which works on all my devices.
So, that's it; no solution just screwed if we own a DLink router? Blah... lame. What a bummer.

Was it just a design flaw with the phone? My wife's S4 Active seems to connect at 433mbs, but it's a slightly different phone.

Could be the phone, the driver, or the OS. I've seen many mentions of this issue with the S4.
