S Voice Crashing - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I know this has been discussed with other devices, but as far as I can see, no one yet has brought this for the S4, I can't tell you if it worked before I de-bloated it on Monday, but now that I needed the S Voice it opens but once you give the command it gives the sound that says that it gets the command, but then the Screen goes black for up to 10 seconds and then it pops up the error saying that S Voice stopped working.
Like I said I never used it before, so I don't really know if after the command I give it suppose to say something back to me confirming it and then does the magic, so I have doubts if what is really failing is S Voice or the Speech App, I already cleared all data and cache for S Voice, Google Text To Speech and Samsung Text to Speech, but nothing works.
Anybody with the same issue or know how to fix this? Thanks.

I had the same exact issue... Possibly because you removed ChatOn and ChatOnV.... Its required in one of the voice command menus which probably blew it up.
Only way is to download Kies and do a Kies restore. Thats how I got it back working.
Lag Reduction Guide in General section will tell you how its done.

Thanks for the info, I was guessing that Chat on was the issue... however, for me reset to factory is not an option as of now, I really don't use the S Voice, I was just testing it, and if in order to get this back to work, I need to reset and set again all my apps and settings in general, I better not do it. I even prefer just to uninstall S Voice for now until I'm force to do a reset.
Thanks anyway.

Truthfully, for my restore and initialization through keys, my apps were still there after I restored.
Not sure if this will be your case but you can try it.

Thanks, after reading your experience I got the courage to do it myself and for my surprise, there were all my apps and settings, and there I have S Voice back. Thanks a lot.

Deleted bloatware with Titanium Backup

Hey.
First post here!!! But sadly I'm admitting to being a noob...
I recently rooted my galaxy s4 i337 and I heard about deleting bloatware so I was like, "hey that sounds cool!"
Sadly I did not realize the effects that deleting those files could cause to the device... I have factory reset my phone at least 5 times hopping that the deleted files would come back.... but they did not.
My problems are that whenever I pull up s-voice, I comes up with a message saying, "Unfortunately, S-voice has stopped working". I tried re-installing it with files I found from this site but then it started saying that I could not connect to the network so that was a dead end. I also have messages when I do various tasks says, "Unfortunately, Samsung text-to-voice engine has stopped."
I really need help!!! I change my main language text to voice thing to google instead of samsung and that helped a little, but I still get the occasional message and s voice is completely broken. I saw that re installing chat on could help and i downloaded it because I think I may have deleted it, but it made absolutely 0 difference...
Please help!!! Thanks

I'm going to assume your on the MF3 firmware from AT&T. Unfortunately it's not going to come back at all right now. When and if they release something other than a root tool for the MF3, your not going to be able to do anything else with your device as of right now. You can try to take it a Samsung Experience Shop at a Best Buy and see if they will recovery your phone. They indeed do have the capability and has been confirmed here on XDA that they can do it. My suggestion is to sweet talk them.
I had a similar 'voice' error at some point in time when I was toying with freezing some Samsung functionalities. It was several months ago to remember exactly what I did to resolve it but maybe this will help. Go to Settings - My Device tab, scroll down to Language and input, select it, then scroll down to the Speech section. Click on Voice recognizer and make sure it's set to Google. In the Text-to-speect options, click on it and make sure that is also listing Google.
I can't guarantee it''s the fix for your issue but hopefully it will help you troubleshoot.

Experienced the same issue, heres how I resolved it.
While changing the TTS to Google helps, it's still impossible to use S Voice with audio response and the error messages will still pop.
One option, would be flash the stock ROM: but this would be killing a fly with a shotgun. Second option, get Titanium Backup Pro, then go to the app "Samsung text-to-speech engine" click and hold on it and select "Convert to user app"; then wait for the app to be converted to a user app.
Restart your phone; and go reset the TTS to Samsung engine and voila you've got a happy droid.
PS. after selecting the Samsung engine it'll prompt you to download the high quality TTS voices (Eng(UK) is around 110mb).
I would suggest you freeze next time and not delete. I'm a noob too. I think I read that deleting them frees up no more space because of the odexing as well.

Wise words right there. Freeze let's you experience deletion but keep a fallback. And if you dirty flash rom updates, you get to keep the stuff frozen that would have been replaced.
Freezing is the way to go but maybe delete if you're staying with the rom for the long term and see no ill effects after long term freezing...
.
if problem still persists. try safestrap and install mdob rom. pretty much stock tw without the crap from att or samsung. use that until stock is flashable. you not even want to go back its very battery efficient.

Touchless controls stopped talking back

As the title says, when I do a search using ok google now, I no longer get voice results back.
Asking what time is it or do I need an umbrella only returns text search results.
Any idea?
My phone is completely stock, the only thing I have done is unlocked the bootloader.

Isn't there a setting for touchless control that sets when you want a voice reply

If there is, I don't know.
I unlocked my dev ed on Monday and it did a factory wipe. I just tried touchless controls for the first time since then and I'm not getting any voice responses.

That's the default settings, it only replies when speech is appropriate I.e. reading emails, text messages but I do remember seeing the settings somewhere that gives you the ability of changing this. I don't use touchless control, actually i removed it completely

Try this:
Go into Google Now.
Tap the 3 dot menu and tap settings.
Find the Voice Section and go into that
Make sure your language is English(US) (Not sure if others work, I haven't tried)
Make sure speech output is set to always on

I have tried that, I even downloaded the offline voice recognition.
I've reset/uninstalled updates on google play services and google search, didn't work.
Just did a factory reset and still not working. I'm not sure what it is. I'm going to have to call Motorola, all I did was unlock the bootloader but I didn't root or do anything extra to it.
@flashallthetime I am using appropriate questions. If you ask the time it should say the time out loud, and if you ask if you need an umbrella it should tell you the weather. As of now it googles "need an umbrella" and displays results.
EDIT: AAAAAaaaaaaaaaand of course it is now just magically working. Thanks everyone for your help. It didn't work after the factory reset and now it just magically does...

Up here in Canada and no we don't live in igloo's, touchless control did a quarter if what it is capable of, so bye bye

Sounds like it didn't know your location, it doesn't like to answer any weather, location or time based questions if it doesn't know where you are.

Google now cant access microphone

So i use "ok google" a lot and have on all of my phones. But i constantly am having issues with my Nexus 6p, it will simply not work and when i press the mic button on the google search widget it tells me "cannot access microphone" a reboot fixes it or simply waiting a little bit then it will work again. It's anyone else having this problem??
Haven't seen this one personally. That sucks sorry.
I had that problem when I had cortana. It had taken priority. Prior phone though.

Unless you specify what is installed on the phone, what ROM, etc.
It's difficult to help.
I would start disabling the apps I installed prior to this happening.

Yea sorry, stock no special add ons and minimal app, facebook, instagram, ect very simple i have other phones and tablets to play i keep this guy stock for now
i have this problem too occasionally. a reboot fixes.
as someone else already mentioned, i suspect some other program is taking over the mic but i haven't figured out which one yet.
what's weird is that only okay google and the home screen search bar mic is busted when this happens. i can still use the mic to search in chrome and to do anything else (like write a text or whatever).
anyway, keeping an eye on this thread in case anyone figures out what the guilty app is.
May try going to app settings for the Google app (press and hold on it in the app drawer and drag it to app info is the fastest way)
And then go to permissions. Mic should be on. If it's not turn it on. If it is on, try turning it off then back on?

Do any of you have Smart Lock with Trusted Voice enabled?
Same Issue
I also have this issue. My phone is non rooted. Only broken through the search widget. I was using nova launcher. Now using google launcher to see if that cures the issue. So far so good. Will now download my common used apps and see if anything breaks it. I really hope it was'nt Nova. I'll cry. I did speak to Google and they will replace the phone under warranty but I am going to test first anyways. I won't be returning my phone to google anytime soon as they want to pre authorize another charge on my credit card to ship me the device well behold I don't have enough available credit for a pre auth. Said they have no other options. So if your phone is under warranty and needs to be replaced make sure you have a good credit limit. I even offered to send them my phone before they sent me the new one but they said I cannot do that. So upset with google right now and their returns.
I had the same issue as OP, as recent as this past weekend. I was stock/normal rooted, no special launcher, no cortana. Microphone worked fine for speakerphone, but i could not use voice search on Google now on my phone, my moto watch, or android auto in my car. Weird how one issue spans three devices.
google searches yielded nothing. i deleted tons of apps and nothing. i went ahead and just flashed the whole stock rom, and it works normal now.
Check the permissions settings.
I am having the same problem as the OP. Glad to know I'm not alone.

Reading the thread, had anyone solved this problem? I took the advice on checking the permission settings and found that all permissions are allowed except for storage and camera (or was it contacts? I don't remember exactly, both of them are lcoated closely). Anyhow, I decided to just allow all permissions, walla it seemed to have solved the problem, I pressed my finger on the microphone at the back of the phone and said "ok google" and it responded. Can anyone else try to see if this works?
This new permission structure has its fair share of problems, I have plenty apps crashing because of only partial permission allowed, Skype being one of them

Moto Voice Not Working Properly Over Lock Screen

I have moto voice enabled and it works wonderfully as long as the phone is unlocked, but if I check the Google commands over lock screen button, things don't work properly.
If I ask it to check the weather or something like that, it works fine, but if I ask it to make a reminder, it will go through all the steps then when I tell it to save and it will confirm that it's saving... But it never actually saves the reminder. If i actually click the save button it will then save it, but that defeats the whole purpose of it being hands free. This is on stock Feb. security update. It's always done this. Anybody else have this problem or know how to fix it? Moto voice is enabled in accessibility if that matters.

Have had this issue for some time now, really irritating. I encounter this most occasions when attempting to set a timer and alarm.
Another issue I keep getting is that when the device is locked, the first command will be be carried out, but a 2nd command will return a failed sound - as if the command was not recognized, even though it was. I then have to unlock the device to continue making commands.
Anyone else had this issue?

I have Moto Voice on and OK Google off.
Moto Voice still works for all the listed commands "call X", "post to Facebok", "play on Youtube", "take a photo", "take a selfie". (both with screen on and off)
However it seems that Google commands have stopped working. I used to say "create event" and then I could dictate a calendar event, "set an alarm", "navigate me/drive to..."
All these commands seem they are not working anymore. Moreover, it seems that it can't listen to me or show a previous search.
It's a mess. It's like I just can use only the commands from the Moto Voice list.
Can anyone confirm that the previous commands work for them?

Yeah that's the problem I have. The Google commands have never worked for me through moto voice. BUT if I tell it to do something like "check the weather", it'll do that. It's almost like the Google or moto app needs some kind of storage or access permission to actually ~save~ reminders, events, alarms, etc. I don't know why it does this but I have a hard time believing that we are the only ones having this problem. Creating reminders without having to unlock the phone or use "ok Google" was one of the reasons I liked this phone to begin with and it doesn't even work.

[UPDATE] Voice to text is double and triple inputting what I say? Google issue??

Today is the first time, since the Google Assistant update, that I've really text anyone.... I tend to use the voice to text feature on my keyboard for long text/posts. So when I use SwiftKey, I press the microphone and it brings up the "Google voice to text" and I'll say what I want, but when I look at it - t's in there 2 or 3 times?? I noticed it first in Facebook Messenger, then when texting my wife.....So it's not just one app.
I just switched to Gboard (Google Keyboard) and it does the same thing.... I switched to Swype and it's fine, but Swype uses it's own voice to text software (Dragon) instead of Google.
Like I said, this just started today and I'm not sure if it has to do with the Google Assistant update, or just something screwy is going on with Google?
Anyone else getting this?
[UPDATE]
I've found several people having this same issue:

[UPDATE]
Well, it seems to have fixed itself over-night?
A little more insight into what it was actually doing....
When I would press the microphone (on my keyboard) and speak, it would put three variations of what you said in the field you were adding text to....For example, when I said the phrase "Testing one (comma) two (period).....It would come out like this:
Testing one, two. Testing 1 comma 2 period testing 1, 2.

The error seems to be that it is typing out every single possible interpretation of what you're saying instead of the most likely one.
Like I said, it seems to be fixed now? But I am in a different location now (work vs home). I'll have to check it this evening too.

Thanks for finding the thread where other people also had that issue. Various complaints were popping up in ROM threads for other devices and it's NOT a ROM issue.
