[Q] Stock Mail App Question - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

I'm using the stock mail app for my works exchange email. I have lots of rules set up to deliver different messages to different folders (this is set up through Outlook NOT Android). On my EVO3D i was able to view only my "Unread" messages, which made it A LOT easier to filter through things. I can't seem to find that functionality on my new S4. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I want to be alerted when subfolders receive mail.

My work, unfortunately, uses Groupwise and I'm gonna get no support in getting a Groupwise mobile server or anything setup, so I'm stuck with syncing local for contacts and appts and tasks. I am, however, using and IMAP access to get my emails, and this works pretty well with the default Pocket Outlook email client.
One thing missing is that I have a couple of subfolders where I have rules that automatically direct emails from like my Boss or other people into the folder so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle of other stuff. However, I'm not getting notification when new emails are pulled into those folders. If I go into my email program I can see that I have new emails there, but I get the buzz or message icon that I have new emails. Is there anyway to make it so when new messages get pulled into the subfolders that I also get notified?
Ideally I'd REALLY like to stick with the default email program as I'm also using Mobile Shell and mobile shell apparently only integrates with the default email app.

I would like the same.
I have never found a fix to this issue and IIRC it is a limitation of the software.
I am using gmail so I just set up forward rules and dummy accounts. So I had account X with sub directory Y I have the email intended to Y get forwarded to account A and set A as a separate account. I dont know if this would work with mobile shell ( if it only looks at the outlook account)

It is indeed an Outlook issue. It only sends alerts on mails in the inbox. On my exchange server, the emails are redirected on the server before Outlook ever sees that they touch the inbox and thus no alert.
The only solution is some sort of third-party app, that would be nice.
If you're using Groupwise as your mail server, what is the email client you run on your workplace computer? And your workplace computer OS?
If your accessing Groupwise mail through Outlook on your work computer, your rules can be setup as client side instead of server side rules. If Groupwise behaves like a MS Exchange then your client side rules would only process when you're logged into your Outlook client. So when you're not in front of your PC, you wouldn't move your mail from your Inbox. Thus making them invisible to Pocket Outlook.
Or you could setup some special notification or delayed move rules. Again assuming you're using Outlook. Ornic InboxRules can be used to create some complex rules if you go that route. I haven't personally used it, but I used the predecessor to it called CaTrap to parse the sender, subject, and parts of the body into a another email and forward that via SMS to my phone.
If you can manage to get stuff to your Pocket Outlook Inbox, there are a few good tools that will give you advanced notification options on your phone. See this thread for details. Hope this helps to get you started.
You can see on http://www.magica.ro/pda_pocket_checkmail.php an application which solves your problem; it works together with ActiveSync and Outlook Mobile in order to alert users about unread mails in Inbox and Subfolders.
You can test it by downloading the demo version.
We published version 2.0 of CheckMail application.
New features are:
- displays messages on "Today Screen";
- audio alert when new messages are received;
- audio reminder if the new messages where not read (the interval when these verifications are made is selectable by user);
- by taping on CheckMail application, user can open Messaging application (Outlook);
- user can select in CheckMail application not to check Inbox (only subfolders).
Visit http://www.software.magicashop.ro/pda_pocket_checkmail.asp to see details and demo application.

HTC email & exchange folders

I tried to search but could not find anything.
On my exchange email, I've got multiple folders and emails are sent to the different folders directly.
In HTC email program, I can look at other folders and see unread email there but I can't see unread emails (and get notifications) across all folders, except of course if I missed a configuration?
That's the way it works. If you've got rules to move mails to Exchange folders you won't get new mail notifications. Same thin happens if you use Outlook as the email client, you won't get any notification for mails that got to folders.
What bugs me is that if you hit menu->folders then the unread count isn't shown there - unless I'm missing something

I also am trying to figure this out. I basically want the ability to receive and be notified of all emails including all subfolders. Regarding Fed's comment, I agree that's how it's supposed to work, but in Outlook you can set a rule to display a notification. In my Outlook I set that as the top most rule for all incoming email so I get a notification no mater what rule runs. Even my BBerry allowed me to select folders that were also monitored and hence a notification and email were recieved. HTC however doesn't seem to have an option to do this. It actually sounds like you guys are getting a step further. If I select menu --> folders I see the folders, but not the email within the folders. Anyone know how to setup notifications and receive email for subfolders in exchange on the HTC?
I want to add that before I used Touchdown and touchdown can show emails from all selected folders.
Are follow-ups working for you (mine are auto-flagged in outlook)?
For info, I've asked the question to HTC. Good news, they replied.
Bad news...
There is no setting for notifications on new mails in servers specifiaclly, If you are using a Windows Mobile based phone you can set these folders to be synchronized and on new mails in these folders you should get a notification upon new mails. On our Android based devices there is sadly enough no way to do this.

HTC Mail App and Gmail: IMAP problems

I like the HTC mail application that comes with Sense, but I'm having one issue. I use it with two Gmail accounts. Whenever I delete an e-mail, it moves it to "[Imap]/Trash" instead of the normal trash folder. There's also an "[Imap]/Sent" and an "[Imap]/Drafts" where the respective e-mails go. Is there a way to disable this and get it to go to the proper Trash/Sent/Drafts folders?
I had the same issue and started using the Gmail app instead of HTC Mail. On iPhone there are specific settings to avoid this behavior. Maybe someone will post a solution. Btw what are you using for Contacts and Calendars? Is there an HTC app for those? I know for sure that I didn't get contacts and calendar to sync using HTC Mail app. With Gmail app they do sync fine.
Since this is the first Android phone I've owned, I'm not really sure if the calendar app is different, but I know the contacts app is. It's called people, but both it and the calendar app seem to work fine syncing with their google equivalents. Mail is the only one I've had issues with.
Well, I didn't manage to fix it completely, but I set up a partial work around. If you remove all mail from the visible folders for IMAP and set up the advanced imap settings to either move mail to the trash or delete it forever after it's expunged from the last visible imap folder, it will do whichever behavior you chose when you delete it from your trash folder in HTC mail. That does mean that you need to use the Gmail application for archiving mail, though, but it's at least a temporary fix.

Stock email app sucks!!

Hi all,
Is it just me or does the stock email app really suck! using it for 2 accounts (imap) sometimes picks mail up, sometimes doesn't.... & how slow & laggy is it?
Is there another way?
Hi,
There are several options in the play store. For example; Moxiar Mail, K-9 Email, Enhanced Email & Aquamail, etc.
I personally like the stock app because it's the only one that gives me the option to add multiple exchange accounts, which I need.
On the other hand, one of the negative points about the stock app is that except for the inbox, all other folder shows between brackets, then number of emails inside the folder instead of the number of unread emails! This makes my life difficult when receiving multiple emails in different folders. I can't know in which folder it is unless I knew exactly how many emails in each folder I had before receiving the new emails!
Aqua Mail is great
Samsung email app does suck.
Rich text editing is horribly broken.
Can't insert an image. It shows in edit mode, but after sent, the picture is shown as "missing" with a broken image icon.
I might as well go to K9...

[Q] Strange e-mail/message behaviors

OK, had the S4A for about a week. Lots to like coming from my S2, but a few niggling things that irk me.The main one is the e-mail app notifications. I had the combined Inbox on my S2, but all it ever showed me on the widget was when there were new e-mails. For some reason, the S4A also combines the new text messages count into the e-mail widget icon making it look as if there are new e-mails. Even if I read the text messages they still pop up in the widget count until I also delete them through the e-mail app. This is annoying as hell, obviously. Is there any way to turn this behavior off? I only want to see a message count on the e-mail widget for actual e-mails. What's the point of having messages show up in the e-mail app? I can't do anything but read and delete them (doesn't delete the actual message, just its appearance in the e-mail app). I still have to go to the messaging app to reply, forward, etc.
The other problem is the e-mail app itself. I have Push turned off and one of my accounts set to manual retrieval. Still, it downloads e-mail without me doing anything. I have to turn off sync completely to stop it, which is a pain as I have to remember to turn it on to retrieve e-mails and then it gets everything going back 24 hours (minimum setting) whether it is new or not. This using an Outlook account. If e-mail retrieval is set to manual why would the phone retrieve e-mails as if set to push? It should do nothing regardless of whether sync is on or not. That's how it worked on my S2.
TIA
Nothing? Could someone just verify that this is the way their S4A works, as well? It just makes no sense to me why it does this.
