Micro-USB Extention Cable + Slimport = Success! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If you're wondering if it's possible to use a Micro-USB extension cable with a Slimport adapter the answer is yes! I have successfully used one to connect my Nexus 4 to a Slimport SP1002 adapter, then connect that via HDMI to my Pioneer SPH-DA100 car stereo. The bulky adapter with its myriad of connections and super short cable to connect to my phone is now hidden under the center console.
I can't post links yet, to find the cable I used Google "angledcables" micro-b usb extension

Just curious, why do you use MyDP to connect to your car's headunit? movies for the kids? GPS?

GPS, and as a workaround for the poor audio output of the Nexus 4. Although the ability to watch Netflix while waiting in the car is nice, too.

hmmm... this didnt work for me with
Black 3 Foot USB 2.0 USB Micro B Male 5 Pin to USB Micro B Female 5 Pin Cable
by YCS basics
from amazon
but I'll order the other one and try it because it would be so much better if i could extend the slimport rather than hang that whole thing from my phone

it works!!!!!!
The cable from amazon did not work but the cable from angledcables.com worked! Even though the envelope says usbfirewire.com, they have different models of micro usb cables
I got the 12 inch version of :
Item #: RR-MCB-EXT-XXG5
and i can CONFIRM it is WORKING for AppRadio 3 as an extension between the phone and Slimport adapter.

I suppose it's a hit or miss depending on if the company wired the 4th pin through (Which is usually used for OTG) or not. Slimport uses all 5 pins.

After a few days I had to disconnect the extension because it makes things way too unstable. The slightest bump stops the video signal. You have to totally remove it and plug it back in before it works again. I might try a few things to fasten the connectors together but I might just go without it.

Sorry to revive an old thread. Did you get this sorted out?
I'm in same situation. I just got Pioneer AVH-x8500BHS and SlimPort adapter to mirror from my N5 to the x8500 HU.
But the Slimport is in my glovebox, I want to move it to my center console for easier access and better GPS signal.
I'm afraid all this plugging/unplugging of the SlimPort will eventually wear out the cable or the N5 port.

Anyone ever figure out a way to get the extension to work without it cutting in and out all the time?

USB Mini A B extension cable?

Anyone find a source for USB extension cables for the Touch Pro? I want to run a cable in my car from my touch pro mount to the center counsle where I will have the audio dongle. which will branch off to a charger and line out to my Aux in. Otherwise I have to have the exposed audio adapter and then two cables running out of that instead of the one single extension cable I want to run to the center console. Really hoping I don't have to build my own.
I suspect this will be hard to find, considering it's not just a standard mini USB cable.
I like the idea behind it though. I was thinking about the same type of thing in my car and I'm waiting on getting a couple different docks so I can see if they will fit my needs once I rip them apart.
You need an extUSB extension cable. It should be around $10-$30. Depends on where you get it from. I'm thinking try eBay/expansys-usa/htc store

Been looking at all the normal sources, the problem is I need it to end in the same female plug that is in the Touch Pro (so I can plug the audio dongle into it). Having zero luck finding it.
I have to disappoint you: if you connect both the audio and the charger from your car, you'll get a loud noise because of lack of grounding in car

How To Make Your Own OTG Cable : Video Tutorial and Demo of USB Mouse

So if you are like me. Waiting a week for your OTG cable to come to your doorstep is not an option. Especially if I can make one with existing cords and equipment I have laying around. If soldering happens to be one of your skills then this is the guide for you.
This is what you need.
Micro USB Cable … Really you need the Micro USB Head
Female USB Cable Head … Pulled mine out of an old computer
USB Cable … to connect the two heads … I used the cable from the Micro USB
Solder Kit … connect the Heads to cords
But this video puts everything in context and you also can see how the mouse works on 3.1

Can't use bluetooth for flash drives or the ps3 and xbox game controllers (or the other ones the 3.1 update lets you use) XD
I think I'll try this guide when I get home tonight.

I haven't watched the video yet, but couldn't you also just use a USB extension cable instead of a separate usb cable and female usb port? Using an extension cable instead you could just replace the male end with the male micro usb and use heat shrink to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
Congrats to OP for the DIY job. My preferred method would be not to cut up the cable, but by shorting pin 4 to pin 5 directly at the shell. This is easiest if all 5 pins are present (sometimes either pin 4 or 5 is missing), as you can simply bridge the two pins with a bit of solder, and quickly apply heat to the connector shell to melt it in place. If one of the pins is missing, then things get a bit more difficult.
The solder bridge wouldn't last for too many insertions, but it should be more than good enough until the real host cable gets to you.
Made the cable well kinda i used a adapter to convert male to female should this still work or does it need to go straight to female?
brilliant guide, used a different style on mine but this guide is solid gold, thanks very much
Great post, i used your method with good results
Probably more expensive than an OTG adapter, yet I found a supplier of micro usb plugs with solder tags, more useful perhaps in a DIY dock?

if you have the bits lying around then its very useful. If your having to buy the components then its cheaper to buy the cable. Like many of others on here, i have thousands of usb cables so was easy for me.

Using SlimPort and OTG at the same time

Has anyone tried using OTG and SlimPort (HDMI/DP/VGA-Output) at the same time? Does it work?

I'm a little confused. Won't the Slimport cable and OTG cable need a seperate mini-USB connection? Unless there is an OTG cable that has some sort of Y-port I'm not aware of or there is a Slimport with similar Y-port I can't see how they could work at the same time with the LG. The connections just aren't... oh...
If you do get some converters of USB male on one end and mini-USB female on the other you could get them to connect but I have no idea if that would work since I don't know nearly enough about the electronics of these devices.
Good luck on your project.

Slimport isnt a cable as much as an adapter. Slimport is like mhl adapter, has a mail microusb to plug into phone, then a female microusb out the side, and female HDMI out the end.... pretty standard fair ... but no op, haven't tried it...
The slimport I've seen online had the electronic guts section with a cable attached. I know what you mean in that it's a device that functions as an adapter, but there are at least some versions that have a flexible cable on the USB end of it.
Your point is made however.
So, OP (or anybody else) did slimport + usb-otg work for you?
Hi, what do you think about this -> http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/For-LG-G3...448165?hash=item1a0294aea5:g:u~IAAOSw-vlVlj7V ?
Would love to know if anyone has solved this in the last four years. Will generic hdmi/usb to micro-usb work? Do MHL hdmi/usb hubs work at all? Is there anyway to get that Ebay item listed above that is long-since unlisted?

Replace Head Unit

Been reading tons of threads about replacing my stock head unit with a Nexus 7.
Couple of things I can't seem to figure out.
1. I have a 2003 Toyota sequoia with JBL. I have a wiring harness adapter that will connect to the sound system (I think there is an existing stock amp). I want to use the micro USB to charge and for audio, and I ordered the splitter cable for that. Can I connect that directly to my existing amp or do I need a USB DAC?
2. My plan is to mount the Nexus in the dash, so that it is not removeable. Should I run a USB connection through a hub for doing updates?
3. Is it better to use a 2012 or 2013 model?
I plan to use it for music, GPS (probably waze), and as BT connection for my phone.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
Someone suggested this:
"you normally can't connect a USB DAC to the tablet and charge the tablet at the same time through the same microUSB port"
Does that sound right?

Well, that somebody was wrong. My setup, thanks to Timur, charges my N7 and powers the DAC no problem.
I also would like to know. I read that someone used blisspop along with an additional kernel, but I cannot seem to find any install files for blisspop nexus 7 grouper.

Reliable HDMI CONNECTOR

I've tried a couple of devices that claim to connect V20 to tv by wired usb c to HDMI connector. They work for a while then the picture is lost or the phone itself freezes up. About the longest play I've gotten successfully is an hour but usually something goes wrong within 15 minutes.*
The phone has been out over 6 months now so I thought someone may have found a really dependable HDMI connector? I don't mind the lack of power in because I can always change batteries but phone should be able to play through HDMI long enough to watch one movie. That's all I really need hut I don't want to have to screw around with it 10 times to watch one movie.
Thanks so much for your help!
I've been wanting to make use of this feature, but haven't extensively yet. I have though gotten to make fair use of a micro-USB to HDMI adapter. A few trouble spots come to mind here.
Sounds like you're powering the adapter/phone from an external power source? How good is that power source? My micro-USB to HDMI was distinctly less reliable when plugged in since I was merely powering it from a normal USB port. Try running it entirely from the phone's battery. If this works better then it could be you really need a higher power source when using the adapter.
How good is your HDMI cable? Depending on how strongly the phone/adapter drives the HDMI signal, a lower quality cable could break the camel's back.
I've been running into a different bit of trouble with USB-C to HDMI adapters. I've found several of these, but whenever they've got a USB-C pass-through, the pass-through is strictly for power and does not carry the USB signals. The MyDP specification allows for USB3 to be passed through if 1 or 2 pairs are used for the HDMI signal, but allows for USB2 to be passed through no matter how many pairs are used for the HDMI signal. There are adapters which also include USB-A port(s), yet none which include an external USB-C with the USB signals. Grr!
I use C to HDMI not micro usb. V20 doesn't use micro usb. It uses slimport. I have one adapter which allows simultaneous charging and one strictly slimport C to HDMI. Both behave the same way. I have a high quality 2.5 foot HDMI wire.
Power source was Samsung tv usb powered output 1 amp. Point is I have the same issue with pure slimport and no charging.
The one that allows simultaneous charging does in fact charge and work but always craps out but so does the slimport C to HDMI.
Hmm, entertaining what you find when you do research. I suspect the V20 is using the "MyDP" specification, which is the official specification name behind "Slimport". Seems there are at least two other video out methods for USB-C.
I haven't done enough with the video-out feature of my V20 to have much experience yet. With a V10 whenever an adapter was plugged in without external power there were no problems, but when an adapter with external power was plugged in video wasn't reliable.
I'm interested in reading if you find out anything.

Sorry I haven't tried, but its seems to connect smoother the a wifi dongle.
does anyone know if there's a compatible dongle for the V20 with not only hdmi but also power input and usb host?
Happening to me too - Any suggestions
Your situation's description fits my problem exactly. I have a USB C to HDMI that was vouched as working by several V20 owners. I plug it into my Dell monitor to play games on a bigger screen. It works well for a while, then disconnects and popup on my screen says something like, "LG Bridge has stopped working do you want to exit?". Once this happens, it's almost impossible to get the V20 to share the screen again. It's not a hub, just a USB C (male) to HDMI (female).
