Does anyone know of an after market car radio that will work with android using an usb cord? Or is there an app that allows me to do it?

I believe it works with some Android's this way BUT will not work with Nexus phones due to MTP.

Is there anyway to get mtp? Or get rid of it?

As far as I am aware, the N4 will NOT mount on any PC (or car stereo) in as a standard drive anymore.
So unless you have a car stereo that supports MTP, it won't work. You cannot resurrect normal file-system mounting. Well, you can by making you phone a SMB share, but I believe that only works over WiFi.

Already installed drivers for the N4? Using correct data cable?
Even tried wireless solutions as air droid?
But before you do all these things, is your N4 visible in your pc- explorer?
For further questions just contact me. I'm willing to support you.
Try rebooting. That's what fixed it for me lol. You could also try changing USB Storage mode to PTP or MTP from whatever it's on now.

Had the same problem. I was able to connect it as a camera, but not in mtp mode. I moved all my files into the dcim folder under then used root explorer to get them out of there.

+1 for AirDroid. So simple and reliable that even my 70 year old father uses it.

I use FolderSync. I have it scheduled to automatically back up anything I care about every night at 2am. It just happens and I don't even have to think about it. AirDroid also works fine.

That sounds awesome! but I guess you have to leave your computer ON all night, ain't that right?
I just use ES File Explorer and just transfer them to my Windows shared folder on my network. I rarely use USB cables to transfer files at home unless they're massive.

I connect mine all the time to my windows 7 PC. You have to remember that it connects as an MTP device so it doesn't get assigned a drive letter but it should show up as a device that you can explore.
I use Windows 8 and I use the USB to transfere files between the SD Card and the Laptop.
Connect your phone up to pc while booted into android. Now check your PC's device manager for a failed mtp entry.
If you find one I'll tell you how to fix it.

This is partly true. It could be a compatibility issue. What year and model is the car?
What ROM/kernel are you using?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Blutooth is broken on 4.2.1 you need to wait for 4.2.2 or use a custom kernel like Franco's Kernel.

Thanks everyone. It is a 2012 c300. I am running stock 4.2.1 rooted.
Should I try another kernel?

Mine connects to my 2012 Ram on unrooted stock 4.2.1 with no problem. OP, see if there is an update for your vehicle from the dealer. My '12 has already had one due to an issue with the HDD in the radio.

Just called and nothing. They actually have never heard of anyone trying to pair their tablets. I had a feeling they would not be much help.
I am wondering if I try to go to another rom.

Wouldn't hurt to try. I'll try connecting to my 2013 Jetta tonight. What is it you're trying to tether? Audio, I suspect...

Cars usually only connect to Phones via bluetooth because phones have different bluetooth profiles than tablets since phones have changes in their framework to allow phone calls.
most cars connect to the phone so you can use the phone hands free. tablets dont have hands free bluetooth profiles thus is probably why your Mercedes isn't linking properly as the tablet doesn't support syncing phone books and phone calls.
Someone else may have paired theirs with their Dodge ram but they most likely paired it for Audio to their audio system but not their navigation/phone system.
I got the same problem next time will buy a BMW.
I had issues connecting an android 4.2.1 device to an AUDI A6. gave up after a few days, even took it to the dealership and they couldn't figure it out.
for some odd ball reason, android bluetooth just doesn't work right. I tried all my apple devices (ipad and ipod touch 4g) and it connected instamagically to the car.
Let me know how it goes for you and I will try the later rom

Digital audio output over USB? Possible?

Like the title says, would there be any chance to get digital audio out of the phone, so that you could connect an external digital to analog audio converter to the usb?
I'm just curious...

It may be possible with blefish CM 10.1 since it will come with OTG functionality activated in his 3.4 kernel.

True. There already seems to be support added in the audio HAL for USB accessory aswell, but it's not tested.
Whoa! Nice...
Hopefully it will work, so that I could use the phone as a HQ audio source.

Would I need an otg cable (=pins4 and 5 shorted) to connect the USB audio device or would it work with a regular cable? I do need an otg cable for keyboard/mouse, right?

While I would like to add full OTG so it would detect whether it should act as host or peripheral automatically, there will still be manual toggle mode for it. You'd need a male->female switch though, as you can't connect it otherwise.
But does the male -> female adapter have to short circuit the 4th and 5th pin (Known as an otg cable) OR does a regular adapter work?
I'm about to purchase one, so I need to know it.
Besides that, thanks a lot for being (the only?) developer putting effort in this issue!
Sent from my U8800 using xda app-developers app
Edit. Oh, does the 4./5. Pin shorting only make the device detect the host/peripheral thing automatically? So it would work with a regular cable, if you'd turn it on manually?

[Q] How many Blue tooth devices...

How many Blue tooth devices can i have active at the same time? I just discovered I can have my keyboard and a wireless headset synced at the same time. Can I add a third device? I wanted to get rid of my OTG wired mouse and purchase a wireless mouse and leave the port open for charging. With this setup I won't have to ever carry my laptop around as this provide everything I need on a portable computer.

I've used a BT mouse and keyboard on my N7 simultaneously. Though I don't have a BT headset or stereo headphones yet, I'm willing to bet that it could be added to the mix, as it uses a different BT profile.

Bad news, for some reason my keyboard is repeating strokes. I suspect the addition of the wireless mouse had something to do with it. Anyone else experienced this before?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
A BT keyboard may repeat strokes anyway. Get 'external keyboard helper' from the play store, and you can configure things like repeat delay to help sort it out.

Nope, that didn't work for me. Thanks for the suggestion! I am using a regular OTG wireless keyboard and I do not have the repeating key problem. I might buy a OTG+ charging cable in order to use my tablet as a laptop and charge it at the same time.

USB DAC support?

The auxiliary ports on all phones are crap, does the Nexus 4 support exerting music through USB? If not, is there a kernel that has the capability of enabled that function? Thanks.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Probably yes, but you would need a Y cable splitter for the USB power. In the end you'd get a really bulky setup. Not worth it IMHO.

That is called USB audio out. The Nexus 7 supports OTG of of the box, but even then it cannot support USB audio out.

So the chances of it working on a Nexus 4 is slim.
