When will reviewers start receiving units? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

At the moment there seems to be a serious lack of reviews. All of the available ones are usually short first impression videos from the unveiling. The only two actual video reviews (and they're honestly not that great) are from PhoneArena and GSMArena. Neither really go into depth, compare the S4 to competitors, or anything else that a potential buyer would want to see.
It's pretty clear that nobody has really received a review unit yet. Android Central would definitely be loud and proud if they had (and they'd also write a kick ass review on it). For some reason I thought I heard a March 29th date that reviewers would begin to receive them, but clearly that hasn't really happened. So does anyone have any idea when we can expect reviewers to receive these devices? My choice between the One and S4 essentially depend on them.

Really not specific enough

To me it seems lika a lot more then just first impressions, and it's been out for some time already as well. I'm quite certain, that they actually have the review unit, because of all the side-by-side photos taken in their office (matches their usual style), hands-on video that's not done ina a conference room, but in their own little studio and mostly because of the battery tests!! Almost 14h talk time + close to 9h browsing + over 10h video + the charging times in the meanwhile....doubt that they can do that during a short first encounter!!

Sry, couldn't read it out then. only thing about GSMArena what I saw was that their review was not that great...I would disagree with that personally and form the rest of the OP pretty much all I could read out is summed up by your sentence:

I'm not entirely sure why you can't understand what I was asking from my OP. It wasn't for existing review, but for a date that reviewers such as Android Central, Cnet, etc, will begin receiving units to review. Anyway, thanks for the link and I actually did read some of the reviews inside of it.

That much I understood, I was just trying to point out, that they (GSMArena) can't do such a review without a review unit, the russian sites as well.
Anyways my guess is, that all the people who were supposed to get review units got them and who didn't are just waiting for the retail units to do their reviews.

GSMArena and PhoneArena are proven to have received their units. Nobody else has. Android Central has specifically made remarks about waiting to get the S4 (they recently said it should be pretty soon). Reviewers definitely won't have to wait until they retail. Samsung wants positive press from popular review sites for people like us and the general consumers who rely on reviews to convince them to get "Device A" over "Device B."

Ain't argueing with that
I just thought that they'd send out the review unit at the same time, unless they favor some sites over the others. Only thing to do now is to wait for others to get their units as well, and to get enough money to get myself one of these as well

T-minus one week until pre-orders on AT&T. The reviews have to be rolling out any day now...no?

According to all the video previews I have seen it does. They are doing a poor job of showing this phone off though. Losing potential buyers I think
Looked for any infos about the device but i could not find anything about it
that is really sad. I do not know why dell is not putting it in their website

I think they are not yet ready with the device yet. If you watch all the hands-on videos, you will notice that they are all given by Dell PR people and repeating the same tape over and over again. Also, no one has yet published a proper review of the device. I think they haven't shipped out any review units either.

Yes I agree completely. That's why I worded preview and not review. Wish they would get with it. Wonder why they are lagging behind the other phones announced.
Also there late to the party makes me wonder about after sale support as far as updates and what not. I may just get the HTC Hd7 on the 8th and pick this one on down the road

Dell has good customer support infrastructure and updates will be handled by Microsoft. So I think it will be alright.
HD7 viewing angle/color fading is just too disappointing. After using AMOLED screen on Nexus one, it is just too painful to go back to ordinary LCD screens.
Oh okay that's good to hear. I am concerned about the screen on the hd7 also. Some vids it looks nice though. Is it the same screen as the Evo? I know my Evo is really washed compared to my Vibrant and even the IP4 I had

A lot of people say the build quality is pretty bad for both devices. This has be a bit worried.

Yea, but the reviews also say this phone leaves them for dead, in build quality and other areas...it seems to be pretty solid form all the reviews I've read so far.
I'm pretty sure you will see a review of the phone on Engadget soon b/c on the Engadget show the MS director showed of all the WP7 phones and I'm more than likely sure that Engadget got a review unit.

there is a review from cnet. i already saw it youtube
they compare it with htc hd7
and yet the reviewer is pretty impressed with the dell venue pro and they're looking forward to it
DELL are changing tack from being a budget box-pusher to something more upmarket. The Venue Pro is one of the first products to reflect their new strategy, hence why the build quality is so good.

No Hands On Reviews?

Outside of the Wirefly unboxing video, I'm surprised that that none of the tech blogs (i.e. Phandroid, Gizmodo, Engadget, etc..) have been sent units for review prior to launch. I'm curious if this to avoid any potentially negative reviews?
I can't help but wonder if this is due to the fact that development is really coming down to the wire. It looks like the hardware has been done for a while, but both Honeycomb and Flash seem to be coming down to the last moment, and it looks like Flash was booted. I'm guessing that review units weren't sent to reviewers earlier was because the software wasn't as finalized as everyone wanted.
The Atrix, on the other hand, not only made it to reviewers early, but it was released early as well, so I don't think that Motorola is afraid of the media.
It could be that, or it could be because Motorola is trying to get this thing out the door the INSTANT it is ready to get some initial sales in before the iPad2 is announced March 2.
You're not very smart if you think review sites haven't had the xoom for at least a week or more.
The release is tomorrow...expect the nda to expire tonight or tomorrow and reviews to pop up immediately after that.

I agree and since the full Android 3.0 SDK has been released I think review units are on the way or soon on the way. I doubt the reviews have anything to do with Ipad2 coming up. I think the wifi model will probably be the answer and thats why I think that moto is holding out.
Im a part of the media base. Motorola's PR team told me that they don't have any review units yet. This has to be a first.

With regards to the last minute stuff, that's more or less what I was thinking. I suppose there is a chance we will some some reviews later this afternoon / this evening.
This whole launch really has been a debacle. Too many leaks and last minute omissions(no Flash)...just so much uncertainty and not in a positive way. Although the unlocked bootloader news is HUGE.

Wouldn't you want positive reviews out a few days before to stir up buzz and jump start sales? As was mentioned above with the Atrix. Most tech stuff gets reviewed a few days before to generate positive headlines. Even Apple products get rerviewed early by Wall Mosspuppet and David Pogue...

Apps will probably be a deciding factor for a few months. Since android has taken off, app development has boomed and with how Apple is handling in-app subscriptions, I think we will see devs heading towards other platforms.
i got to use a xoom for about 15 min today
ill give you my initial impressions
size is good, right where a tablet should be
it is heavy, enough to notice it
meaning the battery is good, it was on for almost two hours and at 77%
android 3.0 is awesome how its laid out
there is button on the left for tabs of running apps
on the right is any control / notification, much better than the shade
there is the redesigned market that is like the web version, so its much better
i use chrome on the computer, and it is now like that on 3.0 +++
and google video chat did work over 3G
it did degrade quality based on speeds but overall good
using it basically solidified me buying it tomorrow.
My GTablet get 10hrs of battery life easy. I would be shocked if the Xoom didn't as well.
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk
I wonder how fast heavy websites render compared to the iPad? I hate how slow it takes the iPad to fully load up a regular website like say, Engadget.. atleast 20-30 seconds! I'm hoping the Xoom feels more like a netbook, with a bit more snap and rendering speed. That would make web browser so much more fun and entertaining.
yeah it's the most important thing of a tablet.
my main use would be browsing the web too...
when i used it, i had 5 tabs open and could easily jump between them quickly (and other apps)

Disappointed with some youtube reviwers!

Hello I'm here to explain why I'm very disappointed with some of the YouTube reviewers about the Htc One vs. Samsung devices
PHONEARENA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdkkKpbOZto&feature=youtube_gdata_player
This site say to their reviewers that the SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 is better than the HTC ONE just because it's cheaper in price, so Wtf with that? They are comparing both phones, not prices, obviously a new phone will be more expensive than an old one, so I don't see the point of telling that the s3 its better than the htc One
PHONEDOG
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHK71jWvRSY&feature=youtube_gdata_player
As this guy is talking about both phones I noticed that he just talks about all of the features the galaxy note 2 has over the htc One but not viceversa, he just talks some of the cons of the htc One and keeps saying that galaxy is better just because of the S Beam feature because he uses it a lot with his family. Omg what is that? just because he uses that feature it means that it's better, he is a reviewer, an arbitrary person, he has to be NEUTRAL PERSON!, imagine I'm an arbitrary person in a soccer game and I give the game to "A" team even if the "B" team scored more goals, but I decided to give the game to "A" team just because I like the uniform...
And trust me or not but much people make their choice basing on the reviews and that is a shot for the back to HTC company
Maybe Samsung gives some cash to those reviewers? That wouldn't impressive me at all.

I haven't watched the Phonearena one yet, but I'm going to now. As for Aaron on Phonedog, I can tell you that he's doing a 30-day challenge with the One right now, and he's made some very good remarks about the device. He also spent a lot of time talking about only one feature of the Galaxy Note 2, and that was the S-Pen feature. While it's only 1 specific feature, there's a lot to go over with it. He's been using it longer and has had it in his possession to figure out all sorts of things it does. If you watch some of the review videos for the One that he does, he's definitely finding the HTC product to be better.
Well I love my Note 2 but to be fait Aaron is a big Samsung fanboy. The Note 2 won every dogfight and the S3 lost only once (in the S3 vs Note 2 dogfight). Or maybe he just really loves touchwiz and all the features it has, one thing well known is that he prefers touchwiz and sense over stock android.

Awesome review there
What's the problem? Is it that people have different opinions than you? It's their subjective opinions, and i wouldn't dare go into a discussion with you about anything if you get all fired up about this. This is the point of reviews; to see if a product is good or bad, so i can't really see what the problem is. If some guys says that one thing isn't quite that good, you object? Do you know what a review with no negative points in it is? It's an advertisement or an overview. Not a review.
Remember, it's all subjective and every single human being on the planet has its own opinion.

Yup. Quit worrying about reviews and make up your own mind. If you don't have the chance to test it, then wait until you get the chance. It's pretty damn easy.
Not sure about Phonearena, but I consider Aaron from Phonedog to be one of the better reviewers out there. The problem is that people watch these reviews and take the reviewers opinions personally. I watch these reviews in order to form my own opinion based on the facts I learn. I could really care less if the guy thinks the phone is worse at this, or worse at that, as long as I know what it can and can't do and what's important to me.

I don't have a problem with it but my problem is that they are not fair, example Aarons to me is the best reviewers out there but on this he just talked about note features and detailed almost all of them, while he didn't mention all of the new innovating features htc One have, and said about that he love the S Beam feature so that's why he selected note 2 as a winner but a reviewers is supposed to be neutral and much people make their decision because of the desicion of the reviewer
And for the phonearena review, well htc One beats s3 in every category but he declared winner s3 because it's cheaper, so I declare winner a Chinese phone because they are cheaper, no way, that's not the point of a review but they are saying that to give Samsung as the best choice that's why I'm mad about it
I see all the reviews and make my decision about them making my own desicion but almost 80% I guess make their the decision about reviewers desicion

You are just complaining again.. if you are happy with a phone, then be it.. probably aaron finds his note2 good for him.. its called personal opinion... or you could start a youtube channel yourself and say everything good about htc...

Every reviewer is providing their subjective opinion so their will always be bias as it's just that; their opinion. Who's to say whether a flush power button is any better or worse than a protruding one, it's just opinion. Results from objective standardized tests performed under controlled conditions are the only parts of any review that have no bias or opinion injected in to them. But then everyone rejects benchmarks (unless their device happens to come out on top) which means everyone's reacting to reviewer's opinions. If their opinions are so important find reviews that say what you want them to say.

Incredibly disturbing
" Overall, I think that Google and Motorola have built a solid device. It isn't without its issues, but there's a lot to like, even if you're someone who has never used a phablet before."
This has been covered plenty of times already in the official reviews thread.
Do you also believe that Nexus 5 can do 8 hours wifi browsing?
That's disturbing also, no?

I'm not doubting the site, but I am highly doubting their review unit. This one as well as Arstechnica seems to have vastly different reviews than everyone else, especially on battery life, screen quality, speed, etc. I'd keep an eye out for updated reviews with the updated build and see what happens

What's the most disturbing is that OP believes that a single mixed review warrants its own thread
Disturbing...
Considering that they likely used the pre-release OS to review on and not the one that was followed by an OTA update on the 12th its no surprise there are issues. Hell the WiFi drain issue was still prominent which is why Google delayed the release of 5.0 to other Nexus devices until it was patched proper.
The review is full of inconsistencies and a few errors as well (listing the screen as a SUPER AMOLED when it is clearly just an AMOLED) if anything is disturbing here is the fact that AnandTech seems to be dwindling in tech common sense and quality since Anand stepped away from the site earlier this year.

Considering that they likely used the pre-release OS to review on and not the one that was followed by an OTA update on the 12th its no surprise there are issues. Hell the WiFi drain issue was still prominent which is why Google delayed the release of 5.0 to other Nexus devices until it was patched proper.

I would agree that Anandtech isn't worth going to anymore. They have slipped a lot over the years and I personally don't use them at all anymore for any review.

Agreed, the Android Authority review I found to be a good representation of what we can expect and unbiased to the device and OS.

Yup Anand has been going downhill for a long while. Few on XDA probably remember Anand's screwup of 3dfx GPU reviews.
Of the Big 3 first independent tech review sites: Anand, Tom's, and [H]ardOCP...[H] is the only one left. All the others long since fell by the wayside.
Disturbing maybe, but I will leverage this review with a few facts:
a) this is just one review, the others have been pretty positive
b) this will be an unlocked Nexus phone on Verizon
c) these phones receive the most updates, it will be improved upon. My Nexus 10 is still an amazing tablet.
I will still be getting this device and throwing my Galaxy S5 in a very hot fire.

Be advised, Li batteries don't react well to fires.

Where are the reviews?

How soon until the major blogs/news outlets will start posting their reviews of these units? I can't wait to read all about the 6P, especially about the camera and battery.
The phone isn't available!
Most bloggers /reviewers don't get a review unit until it's available for sale, also most have to buy the phone themselves.
Also any good reviewer will use the phone for a week or two so they can actually give you a review, not just impressions, which we've seen a ton of.
Patience.
probably looking at another 10 days or so before we see them start pouring in.

Not true at all.... Maybe top ten or so get a free unit (can be 5, or 20 but several do) to test week before the event even started. That's how dxomark grade the camera. Was the same for moto xpe. I assume one week to see reviews.... When actual units start shipping, we will see plenty more "blogger" reviews who had to wait like anyone else

I understand in some cases this is the case but with this reveal it was pretty clear that the popular bloggers/reviewers did not have advance notice or time with the phone, as they all live blogged it and told us as they found out about it, many of them were even surprised at certain features. I heard about 5 times how they found pout at the press event that the camera hump wasn't as big as the leaked pictures led them to believe.
Google really wanted to keep the wraps on this and the fact that there are no reviews out currently support this fully. I'm not saying you are wrong, but in this particular phone release, I'm pretty confident saying no one got early press review units.
Now I'm not saying that a handful didn't get one after the event, but we now need to give them time to actually use it, before they review it.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^Yes, this guy!!
I was super impatient waiting for the OPT and Moto X Pure reviews.
Most probably next week like everyone else has mentioned.
You would want them to use the phone for at least a week before they get a good review.

also - we'll likely see a flood of "unboxing" reviews/posts before anything substantial hits the streets. i've grown to hate the unboxing vids. takes the magic out of the whole process. plus teh "reviews" are garbage.
You just have to stick with the good reviews and kind of ignore the people that either crap on anything not X or glow over everything and anything that cross their desk. I wouldn't expect to see review for 2 more weeks at least.
can't wait for the reviews, i want to know about any overheating issues and probably battery. really hyped about the idle battery life.
Wish it will live up to expectations~
have all of the 810's overheating issues been strictly related to recording 4k video?

I agree unboxing's take the magic away, but I'm so impatient, I'll still watch it. It helps me get excited again, while I wait through the ridiculously long wait period Google has provided us.
The only reviewer I pretty much trust is MKBHD.

1 month isn't long at all. That's actually a really quick turn around. It used to be 4-6 months.
Erica Griffin`s reviews are also very good and in-depth.
She's a bit too obsessed with displays though!
