[Q] If I'm rooted, am I unlocked? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry for the possibly quite stupid question, but according to "root checker" I am rooted, so does this automatically mean I'm unlocked? When I turn my Nexus 7 on, the lock is closed. Should that show an unlocked lock?

Unlocking and Rooting are 2 different things.
‘Unlocking’ deals with unlocking the bootloader. You cannot flash custom Roms or replace the Recovery image without unlocking.
‘Rooting’ deals with running apps with root-level permissions. You can modify system files, back up the files, etc. after rooting.
Remember: Both are not necessary. You can be rooted and don't really need to be unlocked.
This tool is a simple and effective way to unlock and root your Nexus 7. (At least for me it was.)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475
In your case, I believe you are rooted, but since booting up the Nexus 7 shows a lock, your boatloader is still locked meaning you are not unlocked. (Someone please confirm.)
I do request someone with greater knowledge to add more information. Thanks.

You would have needed to unlock the bootloader in order to root. You can confirm this by booting into the bootloader and reading the lock state.
Also, there is no locked icon. It's either the unlocked one or no icon at all.

How do I boot into the bootloader? Power, volume up and volume down, at the same time?

FYI, Yes this is how you get into the bootloader.
Mine did say "unlocked".

^this.
I suppose (since it is the bootloader that displays the screen) that it is possible that different versions of the bootloader (v3.21, v4.13, v4.18) behave differently, but the above is what I've observed - no lock symbol at all if the bootloader is locked.
The icon for unlocked state only has a small gap in the hasp - kinda hard to notice unless you take a close look IMO.

Nope, really all you need to do is press volume down immediately when the Google screen comes up. Some people like to hold vol down and power but it's really not necessary.

Make sure you are ready to press Vol-down as soon as possible when the splash screen shows up!
On my tablet, it seems that if I delay that Vol-down button-press by more than one second (maybe even only 0.75 sec!) the normal boot occurs. Also, same thing if release the Power button too soon after pressing Vol-down. I usually just keep the Power button held down until I see the fastboot-mode screen appear (2-3 seconds later)

[Q] Bootloader help needed

My power button no longer works on my phone. I need to restore to stock using the PD15IMG.zip but I can not get there without using the power button. I can get to fastboot, just not the bootloader (using adb reboot bootloader). Is there any way I can get to the bootloader without using the power button because I do not want to return this phone non stock?

The thing is if you adb reboot bootloader, it takes you to fastboot. The only way to get from fastboot to bootloader is the power button which I cannot use.

And you already tried pulling the battery, putting it back in while holding the volume down? f you have, you might be in a pinch.
I came to a solution. I updated my recovery through rom manager to one that doesnt turn on when power is plugged in. So now there is no way they could get the phone on any way.

So when they fix the power button they won't see it's been rooted? They fix the phones at the T-mobile facility and check everything out.
I am pretty sure that rooting the phone only voids the warranty for software. The power button is a hardware issue, so I don't think you will have an issue either way.

Hey, if they get it fixed then call me and tell me its rooted, then I'll just tell them to send it back to me. I'll take it free of charge
Although, in all seriousness, I'd probably be screwed; however, I sent my last phone back when it wouldn't turn on rooted.
let us know what happened

Forgot to check this thread in awhile, but just for future reference, there is no software warranty and separate hardware warranty. There is only one warranty and if anything voids it then it doesn't matter if it was hardware or a software issue. I've seen out of warranty fees charged because there was a software issue and the phone had a slight crack on the screen in the corner.

They don't return phones sent in. It's actually part of the script read to you that once sent that T-mobile will not return it.

Safe Mode

I just stumbled upon a 'safe mode' that our Atrix can be booted into, I believe its similar to windows safe mode, as in it only loads essential system files.
To do this, power off your Atrix, and press the power button to turn it on. Once the boot ANIMATION starts, immediately press and HOLD the vol up + vol down buttons until you get a long vibe, then release. you'll then see 'safe mode' at the lower left of the screen when the lockscreen comes up.
Im sure this could be of some use... for something. Just unsure exactly what this could be useful for at this point.
Is the data working? Can you make phone calls? I didn't try it yet.

I'm sure there are more than this, but I've heard safe mode mainly being used by people who get the force close of death loop (aka force close loop that never ends, even when restarting). This way in safe mode you can try to do something about the app causing the trouble.
like delete it?
Safe Mode FTW! Thank you! Thank you!
I was in a force-close loop after a launcher update and this was the solution.
XDA comes through again!!!
Thank you so much!

First time I found out about safe mode, it was when I was booting my Galaxy Note and at same time rubbing it against my trousers to wipe the screen clean. In GNote, during the boot animation the Menu key has to be tapped several times, no wonder the rubbing did the trick.
It is good to know now when it would be useful.

Disable shut down button when lock screen is on

Hi,
Is there any MOD that disables the possibility to shut down the device when the phone is locked ? Its only for security reasons, because IMO it doesnt make any sense having something like Ceberus installed if the theif just can turn the phone off immediately after he/she steals it.
Thank you
Anyone ?
This would be a great mod to see. As I also use Cerberus.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
What's the point of this mod? Someone can just hold Power Button for 10 seconds and then the device shuts off anyway. It's hard coded in the phone.
If it was any other phone with a removable battery, they can just pull the battery.
What's the point in stealing a device and then having it completely shut off?

Well it is exactly these functions I would like to have the option to disable, because it doesnt make any sense for me having this possibility on a device that's locked.
However I must admit I didn't know that a 10 sec hold on the power button shuts down the device and is hard coded into the device. Does that mean it is impossible to disable it ?

Im not a developer but that ten second thing is deep coded pretty deep within the phone. I'd say at boot loader level. Considering the phone doesn't have a removable battery you have to deep force the phone to shut down somehow. So in this case it would be to long press the power button.
And yes you are right on that, the average thief one who had the audacity to steal from others most likely don't know how to hack their phones. Otherwise I'd be highly impressed lol

indeed but the more ime you have the better IMO.
and yeah would be a nice MOD, not everybody knows that pressing volume button + power will shutdown.
Wouldnt simply removing the sim card disable the function of these sorts of apps anyway?
No it doesn't. You even will get notified when the thief puts another simcard in the phone

Found solution
Anyone found a solution for this? I know many people that want it...
A mod like:
Press power button 10 sec+ (after that) press in some order Vol+ and Vol- (example, + + + - - + - +) selectable by the user via an app/setting.
Click to collapse
It would not use any additional battery or resources, since the shutdown mode (where the pass has to be input) would only start after the normal 10 sec press witch is already a rare event. Then, if the pass is wrong, return to normal mode, but if it is OK -> emergency shutdown.
If someone can make a mod like that, he/she would be god.
Since only the owner can shutdown the phone in an emergency. Making Cerberus completely valid (unless a thief has a screwdriver at hand).
PD: Is this located on the bootloader code? I would start trying it myself, or at least investigating the issue. But if it is a HW setting, then forget everything I said.
Imagine that...

Imagine a Nexus which needs a authorization both to shutdown, turn on airplane mode, enter recovery or even enter download mode (where you use that LG Flash Tool).
That would simplify the whole process of tracking.
Bonus: and what about the Location settings....if you turn off location..."Android Device Manager" stop working...instead off temporarily bypass this setting.

Power off after unlocking the screen ONLY?

Hi guys!!
I recently installed Cerberus anti theft to protect my Nexus 4.I noticed that you can easily power off the phone altough the screen is locked.
Is there a way to prevent this?I mean that you have to unlock the screen first and then you have the right to power off the phone.

The point he is trying to make is that if anyone got the phone they could just shut it off and none of your commands from Cerberus would be received.

That does you no good if the phone is powered off. He is looking for a way to disable the power off feature at the screen lock swipe/pin/pass (whatever it is you happen to use). When you correctly input your secret swipepin/pass you can then power off the phone.
I too am in need of this. would have helped recover a lost phone that I am looking for that would be easy to locate if the thing was actually powered up, but since it can be powered off without first unlocking the main screen I think I may be **** out of luck.

Turn off the device(Hold the power button for about 10sec) if it's on. Now hold all three hardware buttons(Power, volume UO & Down) togather till the google logo shows up, and this will tur your device on into fastboot mode. Now you should be able to to find your devece from your PC(if driver installed). If you ment "Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit" by "WUG" than you probably want to use Flash stock + Unroot (Can't boot up).
