What's up with the camera app? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When I take a picture, it shows for a brief moment then goes back to the camera. But in that brief instant, the quality of the picture is much lower than what its actually stored as.
Why is that? It always leads me to believe I've taken horrible pictures when in fact they might be good enough.
For those wondering, I primarily take pictures of Notes / Random papers with information. It's usually text, so it would seem as if its not legible, when it could be.
My simple workaround is taking 2 pictures per page just to make sure.. But, is there a better camera app?

There are several dozen camera apps on the play store. Find what works for you.

I agree there is lots of camera apps like:
Camera MX- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.magix.camera_mx&hl=en
Silent Camera- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=soft.kinoko.SilentCamera&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInNvZnQua2lub2tvLlNpbGVudENhbWVyYSJd
Line Camera- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.naver.linecamera.android&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImpwLm5hdmVyLmxpbmVjYW1lcmEuYW5kcm9pZCJd
Zoom Camera- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ar.com.moula.zoomcamera&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImFyLmNvbS5tb3VsYS56b29tY2FtZXJhIl0.

Thank you guys. Although I have to ask, Is there some remade version of the same app that works better? A fix of some sort

Try this one:
Camera Launcher For Nexus 7-Camera Launcher for Nexus 7 - Android Apps on Google Play
I know it is for Nexus 7 but it works perfectly with the Nexus 4.

its not broken, its just a preview of what you just snapped. swipe to the right to see the actual image, swipe to the left again to go back to the camera. I think this happens when you have HDR mode on, since it has to stitch together several photos
---------- Post added at 10:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:39 AM ----------
Also it's more noticeable when using the zoom, but so far the digital zoom has not disappointed me, i use it to take pictures of the whiteboard in my accounting class cuz the professor likes to explain everything with huge confusing diagrams and then erase everything

No. It does this with regular settings as well.
When I take a pic with the flash, the instant preview looks really bright like my flash killed the photo making me think I need to take another, but when I swipe to the right, the photo looks perfect.

Looking for opinions on camera, especially from parents

Hello, all.
I'm looking at getting a N3 and am currently using a N2. The camera of my smartphone has become an increasingly important feature now that I have kids, the main targets of my picture taking. I have a 2 year old and a 3 month old. As some of you know, toddlers move A LOT. I'm wondering if anyone can chime in on using the N3 camera for photos of kids and if not, just looking for opinions on the camera in general. If you previously used a N2, I'd be interested to hear how you think the two compare. Thanks!
I have a 6yr old and take pics of her all the time. The camera works perfectly and is much better than the Note 2 (which I also had). I think you will be pleased with it over all. You can also take video in 4K resolution. I did this at night (had some lighting) and turned out awesome. It's been a while since I've taken picks with my N2 (still have it) but the N3 can take pics at 13mp (13mp is not wide screen 9.6mp is though). I also have the gear and use it quit often to take those "quick moment" pics and it takes great photos as well.
Take a sec and hit thanks if I helped or if you're in a good mood!
Hi mlin, the pictures on this phone can be amazing. Having said that I gotta say that I enjoyed the camera on the note 2 a little better.
The reason being is the stabilization they use is not good for snapping a quick picture. So you have to turn that off and most of the time I go into sports mode to take a picture of my kid. So while the note 3 does take better overall pictures it is a lot of hassle to get the settings right. Plus for me the camera never stays on sports mode. But one bonus is the stabilization feature does take better night time shots on the note 3.

This is a little of what I was afraid of, I was reading that the picture to picture times were slower than the N2. Is the pic-to-pic time faster with stabilization off?
With stabilization off and in sports mode the camera reminded me of the note 2. I remember my note 2 snapped pictures quickly and in focus. The focus is not as good on the note 3.

Personally the camera is the weakest part of an otherwise perfect phone.
I had an iPhone 5 before and felt that I was able to take better pictures all around with that phone.
That being said, this phone does take great pictures in well lit areas. Pictures and videos that I took while snowboarding look phenomenal [again, well lit areas].
However, I am one of THOSE people that share what I eat, and in turn take pictures of food [don't kill me] in low light areas. There are times when the camera works well, and others where I get flatter/grainier results.
I love the phone, and just wish that Samsung put in a larger sensor to capture more light. First world problems for me. Hoping that the camera gets beefed up in the Note 4,...which I will get without a second thought!
The camera on the n3 is better when set up correctly...I still like the N2 camera tho for its ease of use.
I have to say that I hate the camera on this phone. Not that you can't get great pics, but my kid is almost 2 and maybe 20% of the pics I get are good. Video just can't seem to stay focused on her when she's moving. The droid DNA camera handled kids much better. I don't fiddle with camera settings much although on this phone,I put it in sports mode to give myself at least a chance of catching the moments when they happen. I do notice that sports mode pics aren't as nice and vibrant.
Was contemplating getting a droid maxx cuz I was so annoyed at this camera and wanted the nifty voice activation features...

Thanks, I ended up getting the N3 and so far have been really pretty happy with the camera. Having stabilization on really kills any opportunity to capture multiple pics in succession but I noticed with it off and in decent light, the pics still turn out pretty nice.

I did take a pic in a dark restaurant the other night and while the picture wasn't noisy or grainy, the lighting turned out really weird. I guess this camera isn't as dummy proof as say the camera in the iPhone, S3 or N2, but it certainly has potential to be really great. I've taken some amazingly clear pics with it so far.

My 2 year old daughter is by far the most difficult subject for pictures. So far I've been pretty happy with the pics of her that I've captured, and they're certainly as good or better than what I was able to get with my N2 but there is definitely room for improvement, I'll let you know if I find good reliable settings for capturing good pics of an active toddler.
Best bet is just to mess around with it and take pics in different lighting like you have and change settings to see what works best. Glad ya like it so far though. I've had mine since release and still think it's an awesome phone.

snapchat quality?

Is the camera quality on snapchat with the 6p good like stock camera app? I have a lg v10 and its very fuzzy and grainy and am thinking of switching to the 6p if the cameras are good.
The reason Snapchat pictures suck is because they basically take a screen shot of the video instead of using the actual camera app. So every phone will take poor snap chats when compared to the stock camera app.

Only happens on android. Search reddit for discussions for this and the reasons why, but essentially the CEO hates android 'apparently' and is an iOS person.

not sure where you got this info but i doubt its true. Mainly because when you go to record a video, the front facing camera zooms in a little which is exactly what the google camera app does when you switch from photo to video.

Snapchat for me has been really nice and crisp. Basically like taking a photo with the normal camera. Plus having an 8mp camera for the front facing makes them super clean. Although when recording video with it, the exposure goes way down and thats really annoying. I don't know anything about what that guy said but my Nexus 6P takes hella good pictures whether on snapchat (which i use A LOT) or on the camera app

Galaxy S7 camera trembles

Hi all,
I haven't been used any phone which have optical image stabilization (OIS). I decide to buy a new Galaxy S7. I come to a store and give some tests. When I zoom in and take some photos using volume down button, I see camera trembles. When I restart the camera app, everything is back to normal. This happened twice.
Please help to check this video:
(sorry that I don't have enough 10 posts to post link here)

So, it's a major problem or is it ok? Why did the camera tremble? And does this happen to other phone which support OIS camera?

Turn off Video Stabilization in the settings, because that is software stabilization. It will switch to OIS if you turn it off.
IOS is always on for photos or video. here is a good look.. go to 6:15
I don't think you can turn off ois. It's literally a floating lense. All it does is reduce micro movements you make by letting the lense float and not react immediately with your body movements. If you point it at something and move slightly you will notice it takes a second to sort of drift over on screen. Pretty cool.

Camera issues?

I'm planning to pick up a G6 this Friday to replace my G5. But I'm slowly becoming aware of the camera issues that are being posted. Is this something you think will get addressed with a software update, or should I wait a few weeks for the S8 even though I'm not a big fan of curved screens?
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
What camera issues? Mine has been working great.
I've got no issues at all. I LOVE the camera. Even in auto mode it's amazing. Really really happy that they got rid of the laser focus. Photo attached is no editing just wide angle and hand held
There's a thread titled "LG G6: Is it worth buying?" where a bunch of people are talking about the bad camera quality.
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
There's no camera issue, it's just not as great a camera as it should be. If you take photos in wide angle they are superb, but single lens shots are sub parts. It's digital processing is awful. Hopefully there's an update to fix.
Sent from my LG-H830 using Tapatalk
how's it compare to the GS7? I just pulled the trigger the other day and it's coming tomorrow. I could not find any full review articles or videos on youtube with the final software and hardware version. I wanted to see comparisons to the GS7. I finally got tired of waiting for reviews and went ahead and ordered it. Hope i made the right decision. I'm pretty picky about cameras.
I love the camera one thing I really really love is auto focus is much better than the lg g4 was. Also love that just tapping a a different spot on camera can easily adjust the exposure while maintaining a full frame focus. I'm the pictures at times from the gs7 may appear better but it also depends on what device they are being viewed on. I mean if I watch 1080 videos on my low end barely HD monitor th3 comparisons are useless. Sadly not enough pictures ever get printed. Plus wide angle for the win. Sample quick take from the beach on sunday.

Reviews already show the S8 selfie camera is awful too. What's the point of auto focus if it still makes you look like a cartoon and "beautify's" everything. Side by side comparisons online with the Pixel and iphone 7 show the S8 (and samsung) is still awful for selfies.
The selfie camera is a little blurry but not that bad. For 5MP it's to be expected. Yes, it's not as versatile as the back camera setup, but I guess if you're not used to having to plan shots to get the composition you want, it can seem crap by today's standards. blurry in darker shots, but does well enough for me. Using the filters that are on by default make it worse too. (Can't guarantee that the image I attached doesn't have any filters added as I don't remember when I took the shot. I think it is slightly filtered)
I was concerned every shot with the back camera would need to be "tweaked", but I'm surprised how well it does with auto. You can modify gamma on the fly too which is nice (and necessary with more difficult shots). Keep in mind though if you're cropping to 16:9, then it will affect perceived image quality. That can affect the blurriness of the non-wide angle lens tbh since it's the lesser of the two. Both take great shots though on automatic.
The wide angle is the best one of all three.
I attached a photo taken with selfie lens. You can judge for yourself. Personally, I think it looks fine. Most shots are going to be viewed on mobile so resolution won't be as important as the back camera. I don't use selfie cam too often though, but if it's your primary camera, then yes you will be disappointed by the step down and will likely want to go for something with a higher res like S8...
This is comparison of night shots of two back lens... wide angle versus non-wide angel camera... as you can see, both have their advantages and disadvantages.
---------- Post added at 04:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:21 PM ----------
Here are a bunch of microshots. Does it have it's weaknesses? Oh yes. Is it a bad camera. Not at all.
Pro Tip: Sometimes I notice sometimes you have to "zoom in" just a tad in order to get the autofocus to catch stuff up close but it's rare. My point and shoot does the same thing. (Also there is manual focus)
No issues at all with the cameras here. FWIW, I like them a lot better than the G4.
Just because of this thread, I had to try in near total darkness... It turned out pretty clear. I'm not disappointed at all. I came from S7 Edge, and I can say for a quick low light picture, it is a "little" better, but by no means is this camera a disappointment. But, when there's light, it's better than S7. I'm very happy with the phone.
I am having horrible camera pictures. Worse then the last few phones i've had. The panorama has double images and it's wavy. The reviews on youtube says it works good. all the pictures look like the grass and trees was painted with water colors. it's awful. I'm worried about what I"m going to do now. I can't keep my GS7 since I upgraded so there's no turning back unless i exchange my phone but for what model? I don't want a Galaxy with a curved screen so the options are limited at Verizon. I would upload some images but how do i post the images from my computer? The image button wants a url.

I tried auto mode with and without HDR. Btw there's no HDR button so I have to go in the settings every time I want to turn it on our off. Totally unacceptable. I tried manual mode too. I have it at 16:9 at the highest resolution. Is there a quality setting I missed?

Also, if you tap on the object you want it to focus on, you'll see a slider (I circled it in other screen shot) which your can use to make adjustments to make pictures clearer in low light or put your own tweak on a picture.

At the bottom of my post I said I wanted to post some shots but I don't know how to upload them to the forum from the computer.

I tried auto mode with and without HDR. Btw there's no HDR button so I have to go in the settings every time I want to turn it on our off. Totally unacceptable. I tried manual mode too. I have it at 16:9 at the highest resolution. Is there a quality setting I missed?

There is an attach button under post writing form. You need to be in advanced mode to attach. The button is "Manage Attachments"

Port of Google camera with HDR+

Anybody trie dit on their snapdragon S8+ (Or S8)?
I doubt it will make an amazing difference, since the S8 is already quite good in that department but that could still be interesting. I suppose that on one hand you have Google's superior algorithms, on the other hand they are not fitted to S8 hardware and you probably lose OIS....
too bad it doesn't work for exynos versions.

HDR+ works? I would be quite surprised.
Yes, it works. I'm not sure how "proper" (because I can not say that pictures are masterpieces) it works, but I can enable that feature, take shot, wait a bit ("hdr processing" message) and get slightly different photo. Process is same as on pixel/nexus. App is stable, no crashes.
Btw, on hdr+ photo info it states that photo is made on nexus 6, and on regular shots in same app - galaxy s8+

I have it and it works well. Google's processing has added a tiny bit more noise compared to Samsung but Google's colors are more realistic (which I prefer) while Samsung's are much too bright/vibrant

I noticed a more noisy image. I dont think its preferable.
My own opinion is that the Hdr is not working properly with this google camera.
You who had the Nexus phone could you take a photo and verify the noise?

It's really not that bad. I could attach comparison photos if you want.
Edit: I'm also using the updated mod (noise reduction) that allows 1080p60fps video
Edit 2: Took some more photos. In daylight to medium/dark lighting, Google's camera seems to take better pictures. I noticed that Google is able to add more detail to the clouds when contrasted with ex: large buildings/trees while Samsung's camera seems to overexpose images and leave the sky almost white.
But for nighttime photos, Google's camera definitely has much more noise. I guess it's a trade off.
Edit 3: Took even more photos with many different lighting/contrasts. Not sure which app I like the best. Sometimes Samsung photos are too bright (but can be partially fixed by darkening the photo) and sometimes the colors seem pretty natural. Samsung's camera has consistently sharper photos than Google. Also with higher contrast, the sky using Google camera is an unaturally deep blue, making the image look artifical/fake.
tested on my S8plus exynos.... But noisy

Ok thanks for the comparison. Good to know. Im not sarcastic.
What is more interesting yet is differance betwean Google Camera on nexus vs google camera on the s8+
If anybody could take identical pix on nexus vs s8+ and see if the photo from nexus have the same noisines as our s8+ have.

Which version allows for 60fps? I tried to look around for a development thread, but all I found was the XDA article Here. Is that where you got the version you are testing?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Moto_Z/comments/6te3cj/google_camera_ported_to_moto_z/dlkdp2u/ found it here, go to /u/rawrlaud's comment about amir z. Haven't really had a chance to test it. Also keep in mind there is no OIS support, so I've been using Samsung camera for video

As far as I understand there are several versions, using different versions of the Google algos (Nexus 6, 5X, Pixel have different processing due to different HW)
This version works on my Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Exynos version.. can you tell me where to find the follow up for this version in case there is an update .. I tried more than 50 versions of this application this is the first one to be working on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Exynos version thanks a lot

But version has lots of notice in low light ... I think a better version is out there ..
Most of the version are for Snapdragon . This is the only working version I found for Exynos .. now just we have to find a version which reduces notice and implements the HDR+ property
