I'm still entertaining picking this up instead of the Asus Transformer but I saw two things recently on a video that discouraged me.
1) Local HD Video
I've heard MoboPlayer can tackle most formats so that helps a bit, but what is HD playback like on the device? Does it stutter? Does it have a hard time playing anything 720P or perhaps just 1080P.
For some reason, the lady had a really hard time playing 1080P on this thing.
2) Clear.Fi
I haven't seen a review that actually covered this feature. This is so important to me. I sold my iPad because I wasn't happy with it. I loved Cydia and having XBMC on it though because I could pretty much watch anything.
I was hoping Clear.Fi was going to make me forget about XBMC but I haven't seen any videos on Youtube or heard people discuss Clear.Fi too well.
What's your experience been like? Do you have problems streaming specific types of files? Does it convert on the fly or does it only stream specific file types?
I'm still considering buying the A500, one of the points I had noticed was a statement from Acer that 1080p playback on the device will be available via a future update. If I recall it's due June/July

to OP.....Yes no one has touched base on the clear.fi features but from my experience just mp4 files.......and it streams over your wifi network so there isn't any converting on the fly since it only plays mp4's but it will see avi's and wmv's but will not play it ....it says cannot play format unknown hopefully when rom developement progress may some how we would be able to watch other formats like video codec installs but it kinda sucks because all my vids need to be converted to work which is sad lol

Have you guys tried streaming with the help of a File Explorer and a video player like MoboPlayer.
I remember I was able to use the File Explorer on the Gtab to find videos on the network and then watch them with my choice of app.
Clear.fi is just a transport as far as I know. In essence, it's an app like upnp that sees shared compatible media across your network. It then allows you to use a media player on the device to view the file.
So for example, if you have Windows 7, media sharing enabled and put videos into your Windows 7 Video library, music in your Music library and Photos in your Pictures library, clear.fi will detect it all over your wifi network.
Because of this, I don't think it has any hard limits as far as what clear.fi will play as it depends 100% on what your tablet hardware and software will play. For now, that's just mp4s using a certain profile when it comes to videos. Some mkvs will play too as those are just wrappers. I've also seen a thread where someone has claimed to play some realplayer files I think. I myself have played mp4s that are smooth as silk in both 480 and 720p and I have had others that were extremely jerky. This has to do with profiles which I don't have the details on. I can tell you what I THINK it means, which is that mp4s come in several "parts" and that the newest one which compresses the most data is referred to as h264 which the device can't seem to play well at all. I converted a 720p movie and left everything in tact except for specifying the resolution needing to be up to 1280x800 and for it to be in MP4 format and it played flawlessly. I use a program called Freemake. I haven't attempted to convert any 1080p.
I have an intel quad core 6600 with 8GB of RAM and that took 40m so there's no way I'm converting my entire library however it's no problem converting a few movies and maybe a season or 2 of TV in prep to hit a roadtrip or do some sort of travel. I also have an Amazon Prime and Crunchyroll membership so I don't even really need to do any of this.
This isn't a brand limitation afaik, it is due to Honeycomb and Tegra 2. We know Tegra 2's hardware can support a myriad of formats, but we don't know if Nvidia has released a full Honeycomb dev kit yet and since Honeycomb isn't open like Froyo and GB, I'm not sure if it will be indicated on Nvidias site when it is released - for all we know it's already in the various tablet manuf. hands so we just have to be patient. So far the promises for updates in June by both Acer and Asus have me hoping that the 1080p upgrade is a sign of more supported formats and some fixes as well.
Yeah I've been having major problems getting HD files to play at all- converted 480p movie to mp4 had no problems, but can't get the same converter app to spit out a 720p to mp4 file except in mkv container format. Keeps insisting on 4:3 ratio on mp4 files. Once I get it figured out (if I do lol) I'll post the app & settings
Every Tegra2 device has problems with 1080p, 720p and anything encoded with h264 with main profile and high profile (so with almost any HD video out there). So it's a problem on A500 but also on Xoom, Trasnformer and other tablets too unfortunately.

Not every Tegra 2 device, every Tegra 2 device with Honeycomb.
Tegra 2 has been out since last year and a number of the ones shipped with Android 2.2 don't have an issue playing HD video in any format. For example, this is what the GTablet by Viewsonic supported:
S1080p H.264/H.263/ VC-1/MPEG-2/4/WMV9/DiVX 4/5 Video Decode
1080p H.264/MPEG-4 Video Encode
Supports multi-standard audio formats, including AAC, AMR, WMA, and MP3
Mind you, I don't know if the native resolution has anything to do with it as that has a 1024x600 resolution, I do know that it played 95% more files than my Iconia does.
Do you reckon the stuttering will be fixed with an update, and when do they usually come out?
I have been doing this to help stream content and it works like a charm.
1. Download UPNPlay from the market
2. Download Rock player from their web site (the one optimized for the tegra 2)
UPNPlay detects your server and will allow you to browse your contents and will play the video with Rock player. since Rock player supports a slew of codecs you should never have a problem playing anything. I even threw a .OGG file at it and the tablet played it with no problem. Also note that the quality (lag) of streaming HD content depends primarily on your home network.
The Clear.fi app sucks...

You still cant play mkv h.264 right? From what I have read on xoom and gtab forum its a hardware issue and not software.

Yeah I play mkv with no problem using this method. The problem is with honeycomb not with the hardware. Try it out and let me know if it works. Its been working for me.
I would agree on clear.fi sucking. I've been using Skifta with the standard WMP12 media sharing in W7 and it works great.

Its a hardware issue and every tegra 2 device has this issue. You source is not hd 720p if you can play it. Tegra 2 can only play substandard H.264 baseline profile videos and its still choppy. Most people are using MPEG4 to get reliable play back with tegra 2. Read any of the xoom & Toshiba tab forums.

I actually went to edit the post about it not being a hardware issue as soon as I posted it but couldn't because I had to wait due to me being new to the forum. I didn't have the proper information to make such a claim... Either way I have not ran across a video that I wanted to watch that I couldn't. I have been mostly watching anime on it (hi rez MKV) but I will try out an hd movie when I get home and report back.
so is it a hardware or software is that the device can't play back movies smoothly and can it be fixed?
ok so I checked out a few movies yesterday. All movies were in HD. 50% played fine while the other 50% played but with so really bad hiccups. The files I had less issues with were MKV that were displayed at 720 and were a smaller file size (probably not true 720P). 1080 video murdered the tablet lol. I have had 0 problem playing HD anime but again they are smaller file sizes. This method will play all non hd video without a hitch. Hopefully this issue is fixed shortly in the next update but that is me just being hopeful.
Does the native player of Xoom also plays 1080p video files
ie. mp4, avi, wmv, etc.
If not, does other players like vplayer, mobo could make this possible?
I doubt as Motorola Web and Wikipedia say the Xoom can play
"Up to 720p video" but sure it's not quite enough as long as HDMI it to a 32" TV.
Therefore is it possible for Xoom playing 1080p video smoothly?

true. 1080p will trouble as much to bill clinton.
you can convert a 1080p mkv to mp4 format and it will play with no issues. or converting, i suggest DVDCatalyst.
See, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 states 1080p video playback
I wonder is there any meaning the video playback ability of GT10.1

All the tegra 2 tablets are similar software wise.
The 10.1 won't play videos any better than the xoom. Return your android tablet if you expect it to replace windows.
I've surveyed many of the players on the Android market yesterday,
and most won't play a 720p x264 Mkv with ac3.
Best is qqplayer. Next best is vplayer, but really it can't either,
So only qqplayer. If anyone knows better, please speak up.
Otherwise, use plex it is the best transcoding streaming player around..

Using Moboplayer (from market) with Tiamat 2.2, 1080p video will just about play, but its not ideal.
720p is fine.
I only play file resolutions up to 720p on the Xoom because of the native resolution. I use Mobo player for my .avi and DVD Catalyst converted .mp4 files but if I am in a rush and have a high bit rate 720p .mkv file, the Dice player plays everything I throw at it. I have monitored my usage of both and I really mainly use Mobo. Dice comes in handy when I just don't want to wait for a conversion because I am heading out on short notice and is the only player I have found to play high bit rate 720p .mkv x.264 files. I prefer converting because I can give the video files a color boost in DVD Catalyst since videos seem to lose their punch on the Xoom screen.

I've had good results with BSPlayer.
One thing is beyond my understanding.
My past Samsung infuse with 1.2ghz single core processor was able to play 1080p itunes trailers but xoom tablet struggles.
Also Xoom has native support for .mp4 files and .mov/.mkv/.avi requires extra treatment whether extra player or software decoding.

why companies release crippled products to market?
The end user is left to work out what is working and what is not.
Xoom is upper range product and it is not acceptable that it can't play 1080p files smoothly.

The Xoom does play 1080p but how well depends on the codec and player. As for why you would want to play 1080p videos on a 720p screen, I just can't comprehend. It will not look better because the screen resolution is lower than 1080p. If you played 1080p on any screen lower than 1920x1080 pixels you will not be getting the benefit of the 1080p resolution.

From my perspective you are badly missing the point - what use is a tablet that can play videos if you have to carry around a pc to convert them first. Its a pain in the butt.

I use Dice Player to play all my video. It is easily the best HD movie player out there and plays high profile 720p but I haven't tried 1080p. As I don't have a 1080p TV, there's no need. Check out the Dice Player trial.

Thats just the thing though, we need to be realistic. You don't have to convert any videos other than high bit rate 1080p which even if you were only using a desktop PC you would need to meet a system requirement to play. Tablets like these are new. Could you imagine a few years ago having a 1Ghz laptop with 1GB of RAM and being pissed it wont play my 1080p movie in 3D? The Xoom is one of the first of it's kind and was never designed to play high bit rate 1080p and you find that a bother. It's like buying an Ipod 8 yrs ago then saying what good is this if all my CD's wont play on it. You had to rip & convert everything or buy the file which was still then converted. The screen is 720p. Most shows on T.V. are 720p or upscaled 720p (1080i). Where are you getting 1080p videos from, Blu Ray and digital copies which all need to be 'converted' in order to become a portable file on any system unless you have a disc player or made a 20GB image rip. Its not a pain in the butt to have to only convert one file type. My laptop is very powerful but cant play movies in 3D yet my T.V. can, should I be upset? I should add, Dice player is still the way to go to play all files with no conversion unless you want to play high bit rate 1080p on a screen not designed for it.

I bought this tablet for two things.
I cannot save money.
My girlfriend moved four states away (NY to VA) and I wanted something to do while on the train for 7 hours. I did nothing on it for 14 hours total but watch movies (OTG cable) and play solitaire. It does both awesome!
Screen is great, headphone jack is nice. If the 10" was cheap I would buy one too!
Battery life while watching movies isn't stellar, however nothing is
Best small portable movie player I know of.
Use headphones in a noisy environment - helps the sound a lot.
I am fond of MxPlayer from the app store - plays .avi movies (ripped DVD format) without converting.
I also happen to think it's perfect for watching movies - having used both a phone and Xoom for comparison. I think the 7" form factor is perfect for tablets since you can comfortably hold the thing in one hand.

Works great for movies, when rooted you can use an OTA cable and stickmount and play off external storage. However, I think external storage taxes the battery a bit more than on-board storage.
Root, stickmount, MXPlayer, VLC, and you're set.
Use dice player. Or mobo player best two video apps on android. On my 16gb ver without ocing I can play 720p h264 flac or aac audio with subs without any issues what so ever with dice player. As 720p h264 with flac or aac is really taxing and you need a high end device and the nexus7 fitted that to the T. smooth frame rate none or extremely little frame skip is not really noticeable at all unless you are looking for it and even if you are its hard to notice.
Best experience with video watching to date for me with android devices. Droid x2 was OK in the video department cause it had the tegra 2 and the dinc2 is just pathetic with its adreno 205. But this nexus7 plays videos much better them my own laptop. And my laptop is not really a pushover either. 380 dedicated vram, 4gb of ram, 1 tb 5400rpm HDD, dual core 1.9ghz turion (sp?). And this thing does the job either the same or little bit better or little bit worse depending on the video file. So far I have 1 video that won't play. But I think it was encoded improperly because only my PC with cccp with mpc can play it with no problems.
But highly recommended. And especially with dice and mobo player it should be hard to find and issues.

I have to add - ES Browser is great for movies on your lan. I have a 500gb drive on my router (always on) with all my movies.
ES Browser sees this storage, and clicking on a movie launches MX Player. All .avi movies. Perfect playback.

It's perfect to watch movies. The colors may not be perfect but the image is pretty sharp. The only disadvantage is that the screen is not very visible outside with sun directly at it. But this is with pretty much everything. It's also very portable and comfy to watch a movie. Specially if you have to hold it in your hand

This is the seventh reply to verify the Nexus 7 is great for watching movies. I use the Dice player for h264 720p HD movies. After the 32GB is full, the Nexus Media Importer App and an OTG cable lets you stream movies from a USB flash drive. No rooting required.

nexus 7 is really nice for movie watching. You see, other tablets is much heavier and this one lies in my hand really good. Also image is pretty nice.

I am interesting in OUYA because it has a slim body. I dont want to play video game on it. The only thing I want to do is to play movie. I have a lot of movies stored in my laptop. The current way that I use is to connect my laptop to HDTV by HDMI. Can OUYA replace my current method? I can play 720P movie(MKV or RMVB) on my cellphone(Galaxy note 2). Ouya has the same equipment(Tegra3 with 1.7G). So I think it can play 720P movie smoothly like my cellphone. Did anyone here try playing moive on OUYA?
Yes the ouya plays 720p movies well. I use xbmc at the time. I was thinking about the ouya or the raspberry pi and I am glad I bought the ouya. The ouya, for my use and purposes, is an awesome media center. The internal storage is small but it has a usb port. Xbmc has support for a network attached storage (nas) which is what I use. The ouya also has the added benefit of games. For only $99.99, I recommend the ouya for your current situation. It also has low power usage and it is highly portable.

if you want to use your ouya exclusively as mediacenter you can start xbmc with a autorun-app, don't know what it's called tho.
only culprit is that the button layout isnt quite optimal when using ouya controller but i'm using my cellphone with yatse installed and as a media-solution this couldn't be any better.
not only 720p but even 1080P movies (shared from my nas) are being played like a charm and if you*'e into 3D the ouya should be able to handle most formats, too...but didn't try that, since my tv doens't support it

i didn't have any issues with fullhd-mkvs yet. for all i know there are some culprits with surround sound, but didn't notice anything major up to now.
you can without any problem plug your sd card reader/usb-harddrive/etc to your ouya. the device will be mounted to /media/usb
if you want you could even use a dvd-drive for your ouya, as long as you are willing to compile the needed module for your kernel.
didn't try it yet, but atrix with tegra 2 was able to do this, so ouya with tegra 3 should be able, too
Will work fine. Look at getting a flirc device, so you can configure media centre remote to use with xbmc

Short answer: Better get an raspberry pi with Openelec.

yes, i do have 2 and did use one as mediaplayer using mostly XBMC (connected to a linux fileserver) at my home and using it with VLC when beeing at my girlfriends place with an 2TB HD.
Unluckily i really cant recommend it atm because the XBMC version for android/ouya is still lacking CEC support, means you cant use your TVs remote for controlling it and it cant do AC3 audio passthrough over HDMI (if i remember correctly). The XBMC for android still cant play a lot of movie files my Raspberry PI does play without problems. Therefore it makes a much better media player if its ok for one to not use the most fancy XBMC Skins. (I recommend Bello Skin)
In addition to this the Ouya lacks support for direct flashing and a lot of poeple find the companies politics highly questionable. The not acceptance of the last TOS locked my Ouya Console completely and not just the market. Its softbricked now. It has been sold as an "open" project but turns out to be as closed as "a nuns arse". Therefore its unluckily unlikely that we will see an Openelec port for the Ouya. Someone did port Debian to Ouya so there might be a solution using Debian and XBMC but AFAIK there are not all drivers and libs working atm.

Dont mean to be rude but i dont think you are objektive here.
I dont know what files you are unable to play but i am using mine a lot for Multimedia and didnt have any issues with audio at all. I know that some special dts Formats are incompatible for now.
Surly there are some things about ouya that many of us don't like but that's not the point here. Some are codec support and cec which are still under construction and might always be, but seriously: raspberry?
I really wouldn't want to have such a laggy interface and long folder loading times.
If you really want sth fully compatible with all major Codecs and cec and so on get a finished product like little black box or sth similar. Else be happy to have sth. to tinker with.

I still hate that dts/multichannel audio ain't working on xbmc, it is worthless to me untill that is fixed.

Losing faith if I'm honest. I have been giving this project my backing because it seemed to have an enthusiastic following.
I'm not sure there is the focus on the issues that matter to ME, I'm not sure how many people wanted this little box specifically for XBMC but I suspect it was a few. I know the DTS/AC3 issue is an XBMC problem and nothing to do with OUYA but the several other little niggles that affect it are not being addressed.
I think I am going to sell it, I am done waiting for it.. the time multi audio is comming if it even is comming the ouya will be old. The lack of support and community is the other reason.

Ok what I experienced so far is this :
Normally I have my ouya plugged into my TV which is set up to pass aby audio signal through to my home cinema center via optical output. There I never had any issues up to now. Lately I had plugged the ouya into the TV of our bedroom and with xbmc I get audio issues as well.
But vlc and I guess plex as well are able to play ball those files without any issue.
So i guess it's also up to your setup which audio technologies are supported.

I use xbmc on ouya and I have dts and DD passthrough at least on my sony 5.1 home theater. It seems that it depend also from your home theater and/or TV as if you connect the ouya directly to TV and TV doesn't have audio pass through, it will work only analog 2 channel audio.
Good to see someone agreeing to my experiences.

Really? Xbmc on ouya can decode DTS and output 5.1 channels to home theater? I saw a lot of people complained of decoding DTS failure. Be honest, I am frustrated when I saw these comments, because I just ordered one from Amazon and I have a lot of 720P DTS MKV movies. My original thoughts is that connecting ouya to 5.1 home theater. I did saw ouya can output 2.0 or 5.1 surround sound effects on their website. Hoping XBMC V13 could be more perfect.
For some ppl it is working indeed, by switching of amp and turn it on again.
But not for everyone... When I try it I just get same static noise as before...
I never had 5.1 working whatever I tried.
Tried several options in xbmc but it would not change anything

Ouya can decode DTS mkv, I just tested it and my home theater received a PCM audio stream (analog settings on xbmc audio output) and then tested the same mkv with digital signal pass through to my home theater (digital HDMI audio output in xbmc settings) that decoded it fine.
Only thing is that if ouya decode the DTS signal, I have PCM 2 channels audio, if my home theater decode it, I have DTS 5.1 channels audio (my HT is only 5.1).
For the records, I use xbmc 13.0 alpha6 from july 14 2013.

You get static noise because your ouya is passing through the digital signal to your TV or HT to decode the signal. And clearly your receiver is not able to decode the audio stream. You have to change the audio setting output of xbmc to "analog" in order to let xbmc decode it before sending it out to your TV or HT.
Is the Netflix app on the NP supposed to have DD+ audio?
My np is not showing dd at all, not just netflix.... Even Google play movies arent playing in 5.1 :s
problem is...the nexus player is not as good at being a chromecast...as a chromecast. I still have my nexus player but im using my chromecast again to cast things...

I feel the same way. I've bought a bunch of Nexus devices over the years, but this one is a big disappointment, it's going back. I just need a simple box that does Netflix and XBMC well. Fire TV here I come -- on sale for $69 today.
I tried playing movies from the Google movie store and my AVR shows "Multi Ch. In" so it is PCM multi channel. Same for Plex. But not for the Netflix app.
XBMC side loaded can do DD and DTS bitstreaming but no sign of DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD bitstreaming. Not sure whether it's a hardware limitation, XBMC, HDCP fun, etc.
