New to tablets - Nook HD, HD+ General

I recently purchased a Nook HD and this is the first tablet I have owned. I am not sure what any of this lingo is about rooting and what. I know that two of my sisters have a really good amazon game on their nexus and I would like to have it. There is a version for Nook but its a terribly bastardized version. Is there a way for me to install amazon play store on this thing?

Yes, you need to go to my HD/HD+ CWM thread linked in my signature and install the gapps + extras zip. That will allow you to get apps from the Google Play Store and later, if you want, the Amazon Store. No need to root. Read item 1 and 3.

Thanks Leap, I read over it earlier today. Sounds like a pretty intensive process and I do lack your knowledge of how these work but I plan on trying it soon enough. Thanks so much for your help!

[Q] Am i able to keep my nook apps?

If I Use Manual Nooter will my nook apps such as the angry birds that i can get the mighty eagle by going to the nook store stay backed up on my account or do i have to buy them again i know i can just get the apps from the market for free but i payed for these so ya please give me an answer i would like to have some other apps then the 300 something nook apps that there is available.
I would assume that anything you purchase via B&N--including NC apps--would remain available for you to re-download at any time from your account. It wouldn't make good business sense for BN to charge someone to re-download something they've already paid for. To be certain, I'd check BN website or give them a call! HTH

From my experience on using Manual Nooter yesterday on my gf's Nook Color all it did was root the phone and install a few additional apps(gapps, zeam launche, etc). It didn't erase anything already on the Nook Color.

New firmware for the HD+

So, I looked at my HD+ this morning. It updated the firmware. First thing I saw was an ad in the notifications. Didn't B&N advertise the HD/HD+ as having "no annoying ads"?
Additionally, the book I was reading was back at page 1 when I opened it. Good thing I had a bookmark. How hard is it to save the page I was on before rebooting with the new firmware?

Could I please ask, what version is the firmware? 2.0.4 has been the most recent version for quite some time now, and is the version I'm using. It doesn't have any ads anywhere across the device. However, I'm assuming you have something more recent than 2.0.4.
Indeed, yes I see your frustration. I would definitely be if I didn't place a bookmark in a page.
Could I ask, is your Nook HD+ rooted, and Google Play installed, with a different launcher than the stock? If not, I would totally recommend it. I wasn't fond of the idea of rooting and so on, but after doing so, I'm now able to enjoy many of the Android apps and features; especially games such as Angry Birds which is originally free (you have to pay for it from the B&N store).
After rooting, I'm not the only user of the tablet. Haha, I'm not even the main user, my Dad, and brothers are. (I actually gave the tablet to my dad)
It's 2.0.5, check at the end of the thoughts, tweaks and hacks thread. Should be close to this one.
I'm not currently rooted. I have sideloaded apps. But a week ago my Nook mysteriously reset and I haven't sideloaded apps back to it. I will once I find my flash drive with my Linux/adb environment (boot able flash drive). I'm too lazy to make adb work on Win7.
I have CM7 on my Nook Tablet, and Paranoid Android on my phone so I'm not a stranger to rooting.

So. The new firmware isn't the cause of the ads. I bought an app from BN.com and it is the cause of the ads. I paid money and it's showing ads.
Um, which app? Be nice to know which one's acting up

Unblock It. Game is decent entertainment. Worth the $2 I spent, but I uninstalled it because I think PAID software should be ad free. I wouldn't mind ads if the app was free.

HD profiles in stock vs. CM10.1

I already posted a question in one of the ongoing threads, hut wanted to ask a couple more things and figured a new topic would be appropriate.
First of all, are you able to assign side loaded apps to a child's profile in stock, or does it only "see" apps that were downloaded from b&n?
My MIL has offered to buy a Galaxy tab 2 for my son's 7th birthday. But I'm wondering if the HD might not be a better deal, especially if i can root it and install gapps on it.
How do the parental controls work on that. Both on stock and possibly on cm10.1, if i decided to do that to his HD.
I think that the Galaxy only comes with jelly bean 4.1, so wouldn't include profiles. Does anybody know what, if any parental controls are available on that?
Also, it might be possible to go with a specifically " kids" tablet like nabi, or something. Are there any recommendations regarding that, or is this question out of the scope of this forum?

I couldn't get sideloaded apps to be controlled by Nook profiles, only nook apps.
Once rooted/gapped, there aren't any parental controls unless you download an app for that, e.g. kids place, to do that for you. No idea on other tablets.

Oh, that's interesting.... I didn't realize that rooting it would lose the parental controls. I might look into that other app you mentioned and see if it looks appropriate.
Thanks for your input.

It is not the rooting that causes the problem, it is installing third party apps not from B&N that the B&N parental controls cannot hide.

Kickstarter Ouya units are shipped rooted?

I read a post that stated that the Ouya units from kickstarter were already rooted, but the ones from retail stores will not be?
I ordered mine in late March, on kickstarter, but after the initial period and it was already funded. I received mine on July 3rd, with a note in the box, that stated "Thanks for Believing" (or something like that).
Is my Ouya rooted?, is there a way to check if it's rooted? Has anyone heard of them shipping units already rooted? Did anyone get a kickstarter one that was rooted?
Also, I think that I understand basically what root is and what level of control if gives you, but as far as the Ouya is concerned, I have some questions?
1. What are the benefits of rooting an Ouya - I know you can get Google play store then, what else if useful?
2. If you root and get Google Play Store, do you still have access to Ouya store and the regular menus?
3. What are the negatives of rooting? - Do you lose any features or capabilities, does anything not work as well?
4. Can you get both Google Play Store & Ouya play store without rooting?

Not sure if your Ouya came "rooted" but you will still need to install other apps, such as SuperUser to reap the benefits.
1. You can run various mods, such as Google Play, and give apps more functionality with things like BusyBox & Xposed
2. Yes
3. If done incorrectly, you can brick you system. Ouya updates can also overwrite all these settings
4. I think you can run the Amazon store without rooting, which has some neat apps, such as YouTube or Netflix
no, when i recdived my kickstarter console it was not rooted. the developers edition was rooted.
All the units are rooted. You full access to the rooted directory from the get go. But as mentioned above, you do need to add the other tools to be able to benefit from it such as SuperUser and BusyBox.
What it doesn't have out the box is access to the bootloader.
You know what Kickstarter Ouyas come with?
This:

Give a thanks if you took it
There is a rootmyouya apk that installs su and superuser which is an easy way to get started. You will need to run it after every update. Then you can run titanium backup to back up games and data.

Is it on Generation 7 able to remove Special offers and install Playstore
I need a cheap Tablet for Netflix, Amazon Prime and Skygo
Also i would like to play some Games like Punch Club should run on it

Yes, this tablet is perfect. And you can easy root it with k4y0z method or diplomatic's method.
Thanks and how i can remove the Special Offers?
I'm not sure if this applies to newer models, but on my HD8 2016 if you never register to Amazon you never get special offers. I haven't seen one ad since I've owned it.

There are 4 ways To remove the ads, With root, you can uninstall them. A program called automate, and from what I seen through a Amazon customer service chat. Or pay the extra money.

I have never gotten ads on any amazon tablet I have owned that had special offers. The only tablet I have ever registered with Amazon is my old 8.9. Sometimes it made downloading the OTA easier.
So i shouldn´t register the Tablet and cancel the First Wirless Lan Access right?
I would like to install Playstore and my favorit Game and Netflix,Skygo and something more Apps.
Guys, before i make any changes, can i make a full backup for warranty that i can just go to restore Orignal Amazon FW without root or any changes
My suggestion is to ask amazon to remove them if you have the ad's. You don't need root to install the play store or apps you seem to be interested in. To make a full backup, you need to be rooted. But looking at what you want to do, just fire it up and use it. There is currently nothing preventing you from changing your mind and deciding to root. I don't like automate cause it is an application being used in the background. Many have reported that just contacting or emailing amazon has got their ads removed. Worst case is they charge you 10-15$ and credit is back from what the thread said. Check out the thread under general. If you don't register you wont have access to the amazon stuff (amazon video, amazon app store, and etc.
