Why is Sony being so distant with the North American market? - Xperia Z General

No Z or ZL confirmed dates.
No pricing.
No model information.
No carrier information.
Aren't they screwing their biggest market?
Seems suicidal to ignore US and Canada and they are losing a lot of potential sales to Samsung and HTC.

How many threads are we going to have about the same topic?

It is likely that there are delays due to carriers like AT&T in the American market impeding things, as they all like customized OS and whatnot, beyond Sony's control. This is the only logical explanation really.

Didn't Sony also say they were concentrating more on markets outside NA, notably Europe?

I doubt it's Sony, it is effectively a world device. So I am sure it is North America politics FCC, carriers...

And what is even more funny, the previous thread was his as well

Maybe they are afraid of "spyware". Just kidding.

I can think.of two reasons:
1. Sony has always been much more popular in Europe, and they always seem to prioritize us.
2. US market, no idea about Canada, is so problematic... seriously carriers like AT&T, different networks etc. why do you people need to have everything different.than the rest of the world ?
So instead of asking why Sony is ignoring US, ask your carriers why they make it so difficult to enter your market.

Until they ****ING GET IT!

someone from another forum explained it, and he seems to know a lot of insider stuffs about Sony IRC, he said sony want to focus on market that they still have a chance, market that is not entirely rules by Apple or Samsung to gain some ground in the global mobile market (india, Japan, European countries) before they go in with a bang in the Apple, Samsung playgrounds. Last year they have become the 3rd biggest cel phone company in many countries in Europe didn't they. Although they are still very far behind Samsung and Apple, the increase in popularity helps them around the globe to some degree.

The topic has been covered already in other thread.

yeah, how pathetic.. i figured from the beginning the jury were likely apple fanboys.
what makes me more angry is how they allow a bunch of douche bags who have no experience in patents, etc. decide who is guilty?
Absolutely crazy

Apple from California, the Jury and court in California.
It was always going to go south for Samsung sadly.
An absolutely pathetic judgement which Samsung will appeal anyway.
More reason to boycott apple for life.
This is outrageous and insanely crazy, 1 billion is way too much for Samsung to pay.
I guess Google and android will be next. i used to like apple and their product but after these series of events, frankly im starting to resent the way they deal with these things and wish that google will blow them sky high.
Did apple know miui?

On the bright side, any changes coming out of this should only affect US customers so i'm not too worried.

This is a completely unprecedented result and no one was ever expecting this.
And now I'll saddle up my Pig and fly over to South Korea to let Samsung know never to sue Apple again because it's just a schoolyard myth that Apple are actually evil money mongerers.

This will simply inspire samsung to do more, you have done a big mistake rotten fruit!
Don't worry guys, Samsung won't pay a penny.
Everyone knows every feature or design on the iphone has been seen at least once on a different device.
They will appeal, and as stated - A U.S judge & and jury isn't gonna side against Apple.
Apple is god in America, most of their sales are there, here in the UK Apple isn't even the 2nd biggest phone supplier, never mind the first.
Rounded corners
Grid icons
Icon docks
Centre button
Full touchscreen
They have all been done before apple, and the fact they can patent such rubbish shows how biased that country is.
Not to mention the blatant infringements that Apple have, notification bar, dedicated background downloaded, WiFi sync, even their icloud, imap, siri, imessage etc are all copied features from other devices.
Why do I still get the feeling that all suppliers who actually do the creating & innovating are all gonna boycott apple....
Too many manufacturers, too many consumers are for Samsung, Google & Android & I really do believe that the Googarolla case against Apple is 'just the start'
The case means nothing really, was always gonna get an appeal - but it will bring all consumers, manufacturers etc closer together against Apple - no doubt about that. (everyone knew this result before it started, U.S legal system wouldn't do anything differently, the fact apple got away with everything even on clear infringements & copying just shows this)

Apples international market is already destroyed, last figures shown were just 16% global ios share - and U.S was no doubt a big part of that.
Googarolla is just the first of many lawsuits against Apple, be sure of that.

This is big problem for Samsung in US, most likely no tw and design changes if Samsung want to sell phones in us from now on.
An appeal is unlikely to succeed, the chance for that to happen is very low.
at least it's not the full 2.45 billion they were looking for.
..on another note- This has nothing to do with the Galaxy S3
I like the idea of Jury trials in principle but this case just how out of touch and self serving the US legal system really is.
Because what the Hell are12 random people expected to know about patent law? and how do you expect 12 people with no legal training to be anything but biased towards Apple when blind dumb patriotism is hammered into Americans as a kid with flags hanging out every window and now those people are expected to judge fairly against this Asian country where most Americans know so little about what's going on outside their own country they'll probably think Samsung is run by Kim Jong-Un.

This verdict (and possible future verdicts against Google) isn't the doom and gloom the media is making it out to be. Worst case scenario is slightly more expensive Android devices because Apple will be forced to license under FRAND. Still sucks though.
Yet another reason why I am never ever buying another Apple product. They have patents over industry standards. Samsung is inevitably using those functionalities - similar to how Apple put their own proprietary skin over Xerox's graphical user interface.
Does anyone know what patents were prove to have been infringing? The radio said they were stupid I.e 4 icons on bottom of home screen and other things that have already been changed in newer versions, of touchwiz and ICS?

Also things such as pinch-zoom and double-tap to zoom. Also the 'bounce' animation.
The ridiculous point is that there is plenty of prior art for most of these touch interface aspects dating back decades before Apple's patents. However, Apple was allowed to patent them relating to capacitive screens only.
The USPTO really are a bunch of imbeciles for awarding some of those patents in the first place. Nothing new there.
My personal hope is with the fact Mr. Jobbs is out forever and for good.
Soon Crapple Ltd. will become only the patent troll and not an R&D pusher.
We should expect their inevetable decline and demise in few years.
This was actually the expected outcome. You think that American juries deciding between finding an American or South Korean company guilty in an American court would go against said American company?
Let's narrow it down even more. Silicon Valley juries in a Silicon Valley court deciding that a Silicon Valley company is guilty? No chance. Just like the South Korean court decided both was guilty, but Apple more than Samsung.
Things like this should be decided in a more neutral zone, methinks. Europe comes to mind, since the verdicts of courts there clearly show no obvious bias at all. Everyone gets to win some and lose some. That should get them talking of licensing rather than litigating.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zd-dqUuvLk4
^ I saw this in another thread, and IMO it's definitely worth watching.
Sure most of it is common sense, but what if the jury watched this video before they made their decision?...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
actually the whole case seens stupid to me.i do not know any other company which acts stupid as apple about its patents.and many patents seem to be quite stupid.
shall we have round screens now because apple says so?no because apple has a patent for this probably too
europe seems to be a better place for a real decision.
A good read that somewhat confirms my earlier assumptions.
And effects of the verdict doesn't seem to be in Apple's best interest, what with Apple basically admitting that Samsung is the same as Apple...

HTC quarterly profit goes down again

HTC has had a hard time following a clear strategy for the last 2 years or so and still, they keep making profit.
The development and marketing around their new devices (and mostly the One) is expensive, and now that their flagship device is available, hopefully the situation will get better and better.

It's Quarter 1(January to March) profit statistics. We all know HTC didn't release much handset in the 1st quarter of the year yet aggressively doing pre advertisments of the device.
On the 1st quarter only a limited part of the UK market got the HTC One so it is to be expected.
Starting on April HTC released the handset on Taiwan, All of Europe, Middle East & US and this May they're planning on releasing the handset globally. So it really makes sense if you ask me.
Even HTC indeed expects this.
The company did not reveal how many units of the HTC One it has so far sold, but said it expected revenues to jump in the second quarter to NT$70 billion.

Actually the one interesting thing in the article I picked up on is Samsung is expected to sell *six times* as many GS4's as HTC will sell Ones.
Why did they even *need* to pay students to troll HTC boards? That's like the Yankees feeling the need to cheat to beat Kansas City.
Whatever you may think about their phones, I can assure you Samsung doesn't *need* anyone's support at this point. Now that they've beaten Apple, they *are* the new evil empire. I personally don't root for the "overdog"...
Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app
No one has to worried at all even if HTC go bust. The phone still works, you'll still be able to get repairs/parts or a switch to a different phone, and the world will not end. Oh, and HTC won't go bust either
I'm still pretty optimistic about HTC's future. The next quarter should be interesting once we have a better idea of how the One's launch sales stack up. In the meantime they're getting a lot of very positive coverage from all the major tech sites, which should hopefully push sales. The One is an incredible phone - hope it pays off for them.
If I was Samsung though I'd be much more worried about what Apple has up their sleeves. They're gonna have Sammy firmly in their sights, and if HTC are already sitting above them with the critics then they run the risk of potentially being shunted into third place, at least where the press are concerned. No doubt they'll still sell squillions though!

Are the people who work for HTC USA brain dead?

DISCLAIMER: I posted this on Android Central and reposting here with the same title in the hopes that someone from HTC will read it and maybe do something about it (doubtful but worth a shot).
After the updating debacle that has taken place with their previous phones, how in the world is it possible for HTC to take so long to release updates for the HTC One in the USA? It isn't like the update isn't finished yet b/c it's been available in other parts of the world for over a month now! They also can't blame the carriers b/c they haven't released the update for the unlocked 32 GB or the 64GB develop editions either! This can only be attributed to the fact that the people who work in their USA offices are either 1. brain dead or 2. are sitting on their hands and simply willing to let the company go into bankruptcy.
HTC stated when the One was released that it would receive a TIMELY update to 4.2.2 but even I'll admit I was foolish to fall for their nonsense once again. I'm done...I will never purchase another device from HTC again. If they want to know why they're continuing to lose market share even with the best device on the market, it's b/c their company has AWFUL customer support, they don't communicate with their customers at all, and they simply don't stand by their word or their products. They haven't even made a single statement regarding why the US release has been delayed...it's simply a joke.
I'm sorry for posting this simply to vent but at this point it's 100% justified and HTC deserves the backlash they're receiving.

The reason is HTC 's primary market is China. The rest of europ also runs the same M7 model. The US is always going to be the black sheep of the tech world when it comes to getting timely updates due to how our carriers all have something different. Sprint being the blackest of the sheep with their CDMA crap, etc.
That doesn't explain the silence regarding the unlocked models sold directly by htc.

Lol at the bankruptcy statement. Timely updates are definitely not what is going to bankrupt HTC

HTC must be quaking in their boots with this thread you have started, this thread could bankrupt HTC!!!
Does your phone work? Can you make and receive calls?? If yes, then what's the issue? What feature/features do you want the most from 4.2.2??
Please buddy, who really cares?? Your ranting about something you can flash right now, go to the development section, plenty of 4.2.2 roms there choose one, flash away, I'm sure the devs here will do a better job than HTC will!!
For me I've owned over 15 different android phones, this phones beats them all, it has everything. The best battery life I've ever had!

You are on XDA DEVELOPERS? If you have found the forum find the info you need and put 4.2 onto the phone. I don't care how fast a carrier does or doesn't update a phone because I do not buy phone based on that. I buy them based on developer support and let me tell you this phone has that in plenty. I agree it is BS that HTC Sony and others can not get timely updates but having hardware venders that provide crappy software support is nothing new to me. Been going on for 20 years. You ever own a sound blaster product??? So now that you have yelled and gotten it off your chest go on over to the DEV section and do something about it.

How will carriers handle this?

I believe that carriers will either design their own modules. This could lead to devices that have contestant signals instead of OEMs developing their radios that could have issues.
Also I could see carriers lobbying against this because of the fact that all the modules on a device are not "approved" to work on there networks.
On the plus side, no more annoying bloatware from carriers, just go in pay for radio module and contract and leave.
I think we can ALL safely agree that Verizon will be the last of the major carriers to be ok with Project Ara and frankly I hope it hurts them (though I doubt it will). As for me, im willing to switch carriers to try Project Ara phones because I currently have the world's most underperforming phone..an S4 locked down and full of bloatware.

No carrier
Sell directly from manufacturer

Ara is the anticarrier phone, they already hate unlocked phones, imagine a phone that you only have to upgrade every 5 years minimum.
I'm first in line for the Ara but make no mistake this won't be a mainstream phone for the same reason that custom PCs aren't mainstream either.
Somehow I feel some carriers may embrace project ara; so much so I'm a bit worried they may try sticking their nose into things as they develop.
Verizon though is gonna have exclusive modules, with a slightly different designed chassis which only their specially "certified" modules will fit

Why for? They make more money by selling you a new phone and locking you in a plan again
That's how they've made it work for now but I'm sure they will figure out how to milk ara devices enough to live with

I really don't think Ara is going to be popular outside the tech scene, like custom PCs.
How many mainstream users you know who install a custom Rom?
How would it be different than you buying a phone, sticking a SIM card in it, and go?

You can't update the hardware of a regular phone so you need a new one, more money for the carrier

Just because mainstream users don't install custom ROMs doesn't mean the market isn't there. Think of how many users are just ONLINE at once on XDA alone; the community is huge. Having said that, it doesn't mean that non-mainstream users are the ONLY demographic for Ara. If it becomes reality then it will probably be marketed in an enormous way.

You can't cure stupid, and most people are stupid. Right now we are getting chips with 8 crap cores instead of 2 or 4 really good ones because people in china is too stupid to see that more cores != more power
Which is not to say that people in the west aren't even dumber, all they care is branding (particularly one type of fruit...) and dumb gimmicks that add next to nothing to the experience.
I'm first in line to get an Ara, and I will try to bring as many people to the modular movement as possible, but even I know where the market for this ends.

Being from 'The West', I couldn't agree more.

Aside from a certain commie-colored carrier, the only issue I see carriers having is tether/nfc. Otherwise they will have to suck it up. The great thing about gsm is you pay for the card's service, not the phone's. Hopefully with a universal radio (operate on ALL the bands!), we can make a truly free-as-in-free phone. Just make sure the BL stays unlocked/ unlockable.
Carries can definitely make money off project Ara. If they were to sell the parts to update your phone people could be potentially spending more money more frequently as people will upgrade the individual parts

Here here to that the carrier definitely will go with that as the potential markup is great.

Well whether carriers get engaged or even want to is something we'll have to wait and see. Google have taglined this as 'Designed exclusively for five billion people' I don't think they're going to let networks from anywhere, no matter how big and loud get in the way of that. As for carrier designed/developed modules, time will tell. Maybe the everyday casual user will drop into a phone shop for an upgrade but like super/heavy users on pc's, how many buy off the shelf unless they need it instantly or the price is almost the same as online? It's going to change the whole game. Maybe not for a couple of years but remember all the small tech companies who cane afford the cost of developing a full device, they can just focus on their strengths. And then like pc's we'll end up with a much more competitive, growing and advanced market. Sure there'll be cheap third party tak, but there'll also be top line unreal options made available. The growth that will follow is going to be unlike anything we've ever seen, even if it does take a while to get going.
I for one can't wait.

Honestly who cares if carriers handle this. We are so close to having upgraded wifi signals to the point where we probably will phase out our traditional voice and text when this starts to become mainstream.
