Do you guys think it will be possible with a little hardware hack?

And it's still only a bog slow 500mA charge rate which means ~5 hours to charge with the phone powered off, even longer if on!
M.

IMHO, wireless charging is pointless cuss from looking at most wireless charging fones, it has to be on at a certain way. If its not, it won't charge!. Not only that but it doesn't give a fast enough charge & if say I wanted to use my fone as well as charge it... You can't!. Your paying for the novelty imho..

Hmm now I can't rlly decide it. I wanna get a new phone in the summer I had the evo 3d n i have the one X now and really the only problem I have is the slow updates n s-on n multitasking. Hope they done a better job at sense 5 n with the 2gb ram cuz that constant reloading, even the Web pages is annoying. I have cm10.1 now and I open 10-15 pages so I can read some stuff on the subway. Overall it's a gorgeous phone.

Honestly if you have the one x, just move on and get the one. And I say this as an owner of the one x. HTC I believe wants to try and forget about the hox and all its red headed step children with their naming conventions and move on to the one. The hox will be a thing of the past soon. They want a single, unifying phone across all carriers. Not this x, s, v, + crap like before.

Except they still caved for the US carriers and did 4g-gimped versions for each one. But yeah, i know where you're coming from. Have the HOX now and will almost certainly be making the leap.

S-OFF should be doable. Snapdragon phones are miles easier to S-OFF. If they didn't fix the S-OFF exploit from the Droid DNA/One XL, we can expect to have S-OFF at launch. Otherwise, it might take a while.

I'm not convinced this is correct.
If an electric field would normally induce current flow in the charging coil, then why wouldn't it induce current flow in the coil on the battery and produce eddy currents in the Alumnium body that in turn would also induce currents in the charging coil?

Hand-crank flashlight +soldering + Ben Heck = man-powered HTC EVO 4G charger

http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/hand-crank-flashlight-soldering-ben-heck-man-powered-htc-ev/
Batteries die, and when your phone has a WiMAX antenna plus dual cameras and a gigantic screen, well, those batteries tend to meet their maker sooner than later. Enter hacker extraordinaire Ben Heck with a simple and cheap solution: a hand-powered charger. Ben took an inexpensive flashlight with a crank on it, disassembled it, and ran the leads from the internal motor to his HTC EVO 4G. The exciting (or at least excited) video below is proof that it works, but we're wondering which would die first: the 4G's battery, or your arm after cranking on this thing for an hour or two.

Way better to use a 9V battery.
Solar chargers are abound.
pedal power.
I see this project being made portable in the sense that you could attach it to nearly any exercise device and charge while you work out... (not a devoted hard wired device that needs to remain with the exercise machine) but one you can take with you to different machines as you work out. I use solar chargers but the reasonably priced ones don't hold enough juice to fully re-power the device, so I've still got to plug it in.
I'd use this while I was sittin' on the couch watching TV or at the gym.

Soldering two wires takes about 5 minutes. How long do you guys think the devs on here spend writing kernels or cooking ROMs? Why don't you go tell them that they have too much time on their hands?

Do you really want to be cranking that thing for 2+ hours just to get a significant charge? If you do, you sir have too much time on your hands.
Comparing this to the devs who make roms/themes is like comparing apples to oranges. The execution may be less time consuming but not the application.
The devs put in their time so that all you have to do is flash and go. Ben's project requires you to get a hold of a handcrank flashlight and solder two wires to a usb cable so that you can sit on your ass for hours on end manually charging your phone. I don't care to be tied to my phone like this. But hey, if you want to sit at a park cranking your charger while you watch your lunch get cold and look like a crazy person thats on you.
I use 2 leads from my Evo, one with a zinc end, and one with copper end, plugged into a potato. It works even in the dark.

I don't think Ben is expecting everyone to run out and do this mod. But if you happen to have a junky crank flashlight sitting around, it is something neat to build and throw in your bag when you go camping. Or you could just buy one of the many products that exist and is exactly the same thing. Obviously there is a market for it or they wouldn't exist.
Saying that the guy has too much time because he did something that many people have never thought of and took very little actual time is what I have a problem with. The largest value his "hack" has is that it is like a puzzle in that once you see the solution, you will always be looking at other puzzles and wondering if this one fits. In other words, it was more educational then functional and I consider that to be pretty worthwhile.
Somebody should figure out a way to implement a SHAKE WEIGHT into the hand-cranked charger idea.

When I said he had too much time on his hands I wasn't referring to the execution but more so towards the application. Even when camping nowadays people bring generators or use their vehicles electrical system to power small electrical devices. It is neat idea but unless someone can just buy something like this I doubt very many (normal) users will go through the trouble of doing this when they can just buy a car charger.

Battery

I upgraded to the Evo Shift from the Touch Pro 2, and found out that the batter from the TP2 fits in the Evo Shift (flipped) and actually gives me better battery life. Interesting find I thought I would share just in case anyone else upgraded the same way.

don't get me started haha. I think the biggest thing I miss is the spacious keyboard and definitely the dedicated number row. The speed makes up for it and the touch keyboard works better on this phone for me too.
It fits in your phone without any modifications?
Yes, TP2 batteries fit the shift w/o modification. You can't go the other way around, though, because the Shift (and similar new) batteries have extra notches on one side that prevent them from fitting the TP2.

Isn't the stock TP2 battery 1500mAh as well? How is that an improvement?
The only one I think would actually be an improvement is http://www.amazon.com/HTC-Extended-Li-Ion-Battery-RHOD170/dp/B002Y24MJ2
which is 2150mAh but it looks a lot fatter than our battery.
I never claimed it was an improvement, OP did. I was just answering your question about whether it fits. I don't believe there is an extended battery door yet for the Shift. If Seidio feels demand is high enough, they may create one.

It won't work. If you look at the picture, notice the contacts. If you flip the battery, the terminals on the phone won't make contact with the battery terminals. If the battery terminals were the width of the battery, it would work. Good luck with making a cover.

My mom has a tp2 and I wanted to try it ^^ so we switched batteries for a day and it was about the same.
My battery on TP2 worked better for me, not sure how or why. And as stated it fits u flip it over and it makes contact. I looked on Sprint's site, they sell a battery that claims to fit a few Android phones including the shift and tp2.

LOL no worries. That's why I put in the smiley. Was just having some fun.
Back to a general comment, the problem with "spare" 1500mah batteries for the Shift is that the back is so hard to get on/off, I can't really see myself carrying a spare and swapping it out like I used to do on other phones. I would definitely consider an extended battery (real extended, as in physically larger, not one of those fake "it's got higher capacity but same size" things). But unless the phone is really popular, you often only get one option for an extended battery and it turns your phone into the 21st-century equivalent of a bag phone. If the phone started as thin as the EVO it might be less of a trade-off, but with the keyboard it's already about as thick as I'd like it to be.

agreed, OP here and I must admit I thought it was awesome to have a spare.. but in the end, its just another batter most of the time. I hate taking the back off, I feel like its going to break.

I would LOVE an iPhone 5...if it ran Android

I hate Apple, and I always will. I will never buy from Apple or support it at all...but I really wish there where Android phones that had the same hardware quality as Apple. I love my Atrix, but squeeze it, it creaks. The back is flimsy, the camera lens scratches and its all soo plasticity, and a lot of Android phones are like this. All plastic, creaky, and over all compare to Apples phones, just horribly cheep feeling. I love Android an would never move to Apple, but I still would really love an Android phone that matched iPhone 4/4s or especially iPhone 5 quality. Just don't think it'll ever happen though, sadly.
That's why hardware-wise, Apple will always dominate in that category.
I don't care what anyone says otherwise. Take off your green colored glasses if you disagree.

If they dominate the category so much, why is it that 45%ish of iphones I see people with are cracked all to hell? Nokia, they continue to have arguably the best build quality in the industry. Counterpoint-- the only thing apple does that gives the impression that they have the ability to create a solid phone is that they only produce one product. Given that fact, they're phone should be much better in every area than it actually ever is.

No thanks, I don't want my nice looking phone to be hidden beneath some ugly case. I actually had a case on my Atrix once. Broke in 2 weeks. The Atrix itself has actually taken more damage that that case without much harm. I probably just had a bad case, though. It sure was ugly.
Atrix is actually a very nice compromise between aesthetics and tank phone. Part of the process when I pick a phone is how it looks and feels. A case changes that. Its not about looking cool or showing off. That implies I give a damn what others think.. I digress. Be ninja. Your phone is too important to drop, not to mention too damned expensive, but atrix can take it.
I've seen people holding cracked iPhones too.. usually they're also holding a joint and a skateboard. Or five things in each hand while simultaneously trying to make a call. can't blame that on apple fellas

There's a big difference between a completely shattered screen vs a small flake of paint coming off of my phone from a 4 foot drop. I had an iphone 3g that the screen was completely shattered and the back shell cracked from tripping over a rock and my iphone flung. Had the same thing happen with my atrix and just a lil paint came off (and my atrix bounced and hit the side of my house) neither had cases.... moral of the story drunk txting is bad
But yeah anyway, iphones dont have the best track record when it comes to hardware durability and I want to know where you're buying a screen shipped for $3 that's as good of quality as the origional... and to your comment about the iphone 4g, I've had a sales rep sit on his brand new iphone 4gs and it shattered his screen (again no case was on the phone). I've done that several times with my atrix and a nokia with no issues.

This is what I thought until I dropped the phone from chest hight onto a concrete car park floor. Gorilla glass is structurally very tough and flexible but doesn't like impact and will break along micro scratches caused by leaving your phone face down on any gritty surface. I just got a black tpu case that has a nice lip around the screen edges but is otherwise nice and discrete. I can use my lapdock fine as it fits perfectly with the connections after removing the plastic tray and it cost me around £2. I love not having a case but it's so damn hard locating good replacement digitizers for the atrix I would rather play it safe.
As for apple hardware, it does seem pretty good quality, the I phone 4/s had a really nice weight to it and I have no doubt that the new device will feel more solid than most devices on the marked (excluding the lumia devices ) how this relates to their ruggedness I'm not sure (putting a glass back on a phone really is stupid ) still I would love a sapphire crystal over my camera lense! Android manufacturers really do need to up the quality though, a phone goes with you everywhere and needs to be fairly rugged. Although the Atrix is pretty decent I do wish it was more solid.

Currently I am not flowing with cash, and I have an iPhone 3G - I saw the Atrix 4G 16GB unlocked on ebay for like 228 (I am in Brazil so hence the unlock) So is the Atrix 4G a good phone (better than my 3G?) Can it run ICS or Jellybean thru custom roms off course, and how is it's gaming power?

Well if want Android on iPhone that's the closest you're are ever going to get. Anyway it isn't even that bad, considering the screen is up to retina standards and has pretty good specs such as a Tegra 3. Anyway disregarding the fact that it's a fake iPhone, I bet the build quality is pretty good.

Me. It honestly depends what your intended use of a phone that is the final decision in this case. If you just want a phone that simply works, an IPhone is better, because its very limited in area to improve. Lots of restrictions, developer-wise.
If being able to improve performance in multiple aspects; Android all the way. What does the IPhone really offer when jailbroken? Tweaked themes? Sure, you can unlock it to be used on other carriers...but who wants just 3G?

Yeah, Crapple will always dominate in the crapPhone category.
Others are welcome to create their own categories which they do pretty well.
My fem uses her very special HTC Evo 3D. I want to see Crapple capable of creating a kind of similar device. Next century eventually?

Shame the MAXX will not get the attention it deserves.

Like most I was waiting for the Moto X, but that is no more. I just so happen to walk into a AT&T store the other day to check out the X, because I knew I would be getting one on Verizon. After playing with it for a bit I was impressed. Not because of the specs, but more for how it functioned, and the features. I compared the screens with my DNA, and could tell a difference, but it wasn't a deal breaker. The screen on the X still looked great!
Leaving AT&T I was convinced that the X was surely going to be my next phone in just a little over a week. I took a drive over to my local Verizon store to make a phone payment. When a walked in I noticed the nice display area showing off the new Droids. The MAXX/ULTRA/MINI were all staring at me, and almost seemed to be calling out to to me to come play with them. So I did just that! Remind you, I didn't do much reading up on these phones at all because the X had all my attention. Anyway, the phones... I didn't bother looking at the Mini due to size factor. On to the Ultra I go. When first picking it up, I thought it was nice, but quickly turned off by the back plastic, finger print magnet casing. It was horrible! I hate plastic feeling phones which collect prints, and oils from your hands. I always find myself wiping down the phone multiple times a day, but always becomes a losing battle. Sure, I can always toss on a case, but I like my phones naked! PASS!!!!!
Now, on to the MAXX. The moment picking it up, I thought WOW, this feels good! The weight of the phone felt amazing, and it felt soft to the touch. No plastic feeling BS here guys! This phone felt good! The Kevlar casing looked good too. This phone looked sexy in every way! Heck, even better than the X. After playing with the MAXX for a few minutes, and seeing that it does everything the X could do, I had to take it! Oh, and it's offered in a 32gb vs the 16gb on the X. Yes, I know the X will be offered in 32gb as a developer phone, but still, the MAXX was sexier!
Ok, so I can't make the MAXX look like it came out of a crayon box, but who cares! I left Verizon knowing I was leaving with the better phone hands down. I also know that the MAXX will never see the cool accessories, or anything near the attention the X will get, and that's a shame, because I truly believe it's the better version of the new Motorola lineup. I'm not talking about what it can do, because they all do, and offer the same features. I'm talking about feel alone makes the MAXX better.
After a few days with the MAXX, and I still feel the same way. First time buying a phone, and not care about rooting it, or even switching launchers. Battery life is just mind blowing! I went from having a charger at home, my car, and at the office, to just having 1 charger at home now. The MAXX is a power house when it comes to battery life. Touchless Control is flawless, and very responsive. The phone is a keeper that'll keep a smile on my face for a long time coming.
For those of you on Verizon, and plan on picking up the X, don't overlook the MAXX. Take a couple minutes, and check it out. You might be surprised, and do what I did... What X phone?
I have to agree, I went in with the usual list of phone in mind, ON, sgs4 and ultra, left with the maxx. It it a very nice phone. I dont think I was even this excited about my Gnex.
I agree also. Got my Maxx on launch day. Didn't wait to play with X first though, made my mind up over a few weeks before launch of Maxx.
I couldn't be happier. With weight, screen size, function and battery. This device is amazing.
I also find it hard to believe the Ultra has its own section and the Maxx is still waiting for one.
Oh well, sure it will come.

I picked up a Mini and couldn't be happier. For me, I like the smaller size. Came from the Rezound and wanted something about the same feel. This whole line is pretty slick. The Moto X seems like a cute marketing play more than anything else.

I'm switching employers and get to ditch a BlackBerry Curve for the phone/provider of my choice. Decided on Verizon since my personal cell is AT&T in order to maximize coverage. Was going to pick up an HTC One since I'd been envying it for months. But as soon as I started reading abut the Maxx I became intrigued. Picked it up a few days ago, and I agree that it's a shame that it's being overlooked.

Pretty disappointed with the lack of conversation here on xda. Luckily there's a fair amount of it on androidcentral and androidforums.

Finally got my Maxx in the mail yesterday. I'm coming from an iPhone 5 back to Android. Like many people I was sold on the Moto X but decided to give the Maxx a try. Glad I did, the ui is smooth and the phone is very responsive. I,m use to aosp and must admit this is the smoothest Android device I've own so far.
The battery is just another bonus. I'm putting it through its paces to see what results I get. Will try and post something up later. Glad to be back xda

Bought mine a few days ago, battery is definitely a beast. Got 51 hours on battery. Over 4 hours screen on time. Probably 5 or 6 hours of music through Bluetooth. Random surfing the web, texts, email and calls.
I think some of the lack of coverage here on Xda is due to the name of the forum for this "phone". While there are 3/4 versions of the phone there is only one Heading (Motorola Droid Ultra). IMHO, I think the Motorola Droid Ultra forum would get more traffic it it was named "Motorola Droid Maxx/Ultra/Mini".

Couldn't agree more. I would think by the amount of single threads started by interest people, and users of the Maxx, they would've just made a section for it. Why not keep it organized?
Cuz Maxx and Ultra are literally the exact same phone, except Maxx has 32 gb instead of 16, the larger battery, and the kevlar backing. It could still be labeled better, but from a development standpoint it doesn't need a separate forum.

Not separate but add the name to the forum title would help some people find out this is where we are talking.

I'm in agreement with most of you. Had to replace my broken slippery ass S4. So tired of plastic slippery phones. I consider the One, and while very nice, I hated the power button placement, the smaller battery, and wanted Active Notifications.
I was going to get the Moto X, but decided I would get the Maxx and return it if I didn't like it. Oh man, smooth as butter. Can't believe how smooth this phone is. I'm running stock, and really doing care that I can't ROM it. Root would be nice for a couple apps and tweaks, but really...I'm not too bothered not having it.
The Maxx is really the superior phones, especially when you consider the plastic finger print magnet ultra is only $50 less. I really think bigger battery and double storage space along with the Matte soft touch back is worth $50! :good:

I totally agree! It's awesome to be able to keep auto brightness on, sync on, and do whatever you want with your phone without worrying about the battery dieing. Some people are happy getting through a full day and have 10% left, but if an emergency ever popped up 10% wouldn't get you much.

It also has wireless charging that the Ultra doesn't have. My sense is that more people will buy the Maxx than the ultra, so, if the forum needs to have only one name, call it the Droid Maxx.

More of the cell knowledgable and tech people will definitely. I could however, see someone like my parents that don't need the extra storage, battery, or care about the wireless charger buying the thinner and cheaper Ultra.
Well both phones are on back order at the moment. Must have sold pretty well even if they just had a small batch.

No one should get the Ultra. The X is a better version of that.
The 2 things I don't love on the Maxx are the capacitive buttons and the 5" screen. Of course I don't have mine yet so it's speculation at this point but I feel like capacitive buttons are a step back from the more technologically advanced and cool looking on-screen buttons. And I feel like 5" is just too big. I thought that about my 4.3" G-Nex and 4.7" Razr HD though too so maybe it will be ok (hopefully).
Yes it is a great phone more than meet my needs

I actually prefer, in this case, the capacitive buttons because they don't take up any screen real estate. On the Moto X, the effective screen space for normal usage is close to 4.3" after those on-screen buttons. I've had an S4, so I'm used to 5" - so in the case of the Maxx I'm glad they're "off screen". The beauty of Android I guess... for all shapes and sizes!

5 months later - still love HTC One M8

I have had this HTC One M8 for five months now, and it still impresses me I have owned 13 different Android flagship phones the past five years, and I would put this One M8 at the top, especially if running the 'GPE' version. Great design, amazing build quality, awesome sounding stereo speakers that are loud and clear, it's warp speed fast, gorgeous screen, and the battery life, wow.
I just installed a fresh 'GPE' ROM on Monday, and look at these battery life results, this compares to my old Galaxy Note 2, which was a beast on battery.
I unplugged my phone yesterday off the charger at 6:00am, and didn't charge again until bedtime at 11:00pm. I got 6h On Screen time, and total usage of 17 hours. And it was a workday, so major use nonstop for work, two hours of phone calls, hundred texts, GPS Navigation, plenty of web use looking up Vendor sites, etc... And most of this was on the 4G LTE network, only a couple hours of this on WiFi. I was hammering on this phone all day and night, HEAVY use.
I'm known as "that guy who changes phones every 6 months", but I gotta say, I'm hanging on to this M8 for the foreseeable future. I've had mine since about 2 weeks after launch, and my only complaint with my device is not being able to get the dust/whatever it is out of my speaker grills no matter what I try. Other than that 10/10.
Looks really great i'm not even able to get that on sense and even wasn't able to get it on GPE...but i think because the phone is for more then 10 hours on mobile data and i just have 2-3 bars because of LTE not in a town it Drains much more Juice will try soon again the GPE Rom or at first the Dev Edition RUU
glad to hear your synopsis on the phone... though i am late to the party, (since i have just ordered it today) im sure that i will hang onto the device atleast for a couple of years. heard alot of good reviews about this beast and i have no regrets of chosing this over the xperia z2 or z3

Can of compressed air with a straw attached will blow out the holes on the speaker grills, unless of course its sticky crap.

Yes but then you blow it into the phone. I rather have it out of the phone
What i do from time to time (and did with all my phones) is to rub really good sticky tape over the grills and then pull it off including as much dirt as it can get.
One of the main reasons for NOT blowing air with force in to a phone is the amount of dust that finds its way in to camera lenses/glass covers and screen glass... potentially. Clearly this will vary from phone type to phone type - but the risk is there anyway.
(Sony IPxx phones have ingress protection that would probably be damaged by forced air)
Your call.

I've actually tried compressed air, a vacuum, tape, and even silly putty. I don't know what's in there, but it's not coming out.
Same here. I am unable to put up with touchwiz but I love sense. With multirom just ported. I can run cm11 and sense. Best of both worlds. 10/10 phone.
Think you guys have had a lot of phones? I just bought phone number 45 in the last 3 years. The M8 is the longest I've had any phone (same 5 months as OP). Use to change phones as often as every two weeks because craigslist makes it so easy. But I'm sticking to this one! Still enjoy it a lot!

No complaints here. As soon as I got it home. I did all the usual hacks. But I had to RUU in order to get the last update. Been running stock since and I'm still impressed. I've even come to appreciate the camera and have taken some pretty decent pictures.

The camera was a HUGE reservation for me there for a while, until I found the 16MP Photoshop action. Now I love it
Had mine for 3 month now, best phone Ive had without doubts.
ViperOneM8 on it, and just new OTA

Agreed debating on the Note 4 because I really miss the spen and large screen. Samsung's lackluster support after 12 months especially on the Note Series. (Seems like the "s" series is better supported.) Prevents me from jumping ship. The rumors of a 6 inch NeXus program is really tempting. For now I want to stay HTC also in June heard rumors of HTC Prime or the max successor. Haven't heard much of anything on that...I love Phablets!
Since last November, I've had a moto x, n5 and now an M8. I doubt I'll be getting another phone for a couple years now.
Unless new ones wash my car, do my dishes, read the kids bedtime stories and tuck them in... Then massage my back. ?
Oh, and grocery shop for me.
i have had my m8 for merely 24 hours, but im certain that this is gonna be with me for another 2 years... damn im so in love with this phone. its the best upgrade over my one x. respect to htc for making such a beauty
I've also had mine for about 5 months. Got it about two weeks after it came out. Definitely my favorite phone so far. My only complaint is that the sleek aluminum body makes it so "slippery". When I first got it, it always felt like it was going to fly out of my hand, so I put a thin TPU case on it. Gives it much more grip, and doesn't detract from its style too much.
