[Q] Broken Screen Challenge - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
So I've been loving the crap out of my nexus 4... that is, until a random stranger on a crowded subway knocked it out of my hands as I was taking it out of my pocket. So the front of the screen is messed up pretty bad glass-wise; the lcd works fine but the digitizer is messed up so I can't use the touchscreen at all.
I'm going to have to shell out on a new screen soon, but I'd like a workaround in the meantime. I figured if I could get a bluetooth mouse connected I could at least navigate around my phone, but of course I need to use the touchscreen to pair with the mouse. Or maybe not, that's why I'm posting.
Can it be done? Through adb or some other means, could I pair a bluetooth mouse without using the phone directly? The only method I could think of might be to pull the bluetooth address config file and insert the MAC address of the mouse into it to potentially trick the phone into thinking it had already paired with it. Does that make sense? Even if it does, I'm most likely going to need some guidance in figuring out how to actually pull it off.
Let me know if it can be done somehow, and thanks! :fingers-crossed:

Ha ha maybe I would've, but the station was so busy that I couldn't tell who bumped into me... It was on an inclined walkway so the phone actually slid away from me by a few feet, by the time I got it whoever did it was long gone

Use the play store webside to load a remote desktop app on it so you can take over it's screen (assuming those apps exist and it's not stuck at the PIN entry screen)

I haven't found any screen sharing/control apps that don't require me to use the phone to generate a code/url, but I'll keep looking

well I figured it out... for future reference you can use the input keyevent lines to navigate around the phone. It's a bit tedious but it's only until I connect it to a bluetooth mouse

Screen size enough for meeting notes?

Hello,
If I buy a Hemes it should make a lap top obsolete, but I am worried that the screen will not be big enough for taking notes on meetings.
Does anyone here use it for meeting notes and what´s your experience from it.
Of course I will buy a foldable bluetooth keyboard to use it with.
/Danne
I often use my TyTN for taking meeting notes. It's certainly not as fast as typing on a laptop, but it's hard to beat the fact that I always have it with me
The TyTN isn't going to make your laptop obsolete. That's just crazy talk.
It is nice to have around, however.

Could you motivate your answer please?
I will of course still have my home computer still. But I don´t see any reason for having a lap top IF I can use it to take notes with.
Danne
Typing is cumbersome, but a Bluetooth keyboard might help with that. They're still kinda expensive though. Also, the screen is kinda small so referencing notes taken a moment ago might be difficult.
On the plus side, you wouldn't have to lug around a laptop (as if they're really that bad), plug it in, etc.
It just might work for these purposes.
I'd like to chip in here. I'm addicted to gadgets and the internet; I even took my laptop to the Christmas party.
I'm a trainer and I'm always on the move, going to people's offices. Now that I've got email and internet browsing set up, I'm using the TyTn more and more. It's almost become my primary device.
When I'm in my office all day, then yes the laptop comes out. But most days the TyTn gets used more. The key thing I've noticed is that at home for casual browsing I quite frequently can't be bothered to get the laptop out any more. There's a couple of sites I like to keep up with (mainly here and The Register) and I just check them out on the PDA from time to time.
I can't help you with meeting notes, Danne, as I don't do it. I would point out that you can load software to make your PDA act like a dictaphone though, which might help.
Overall I think the "laptop replacement" question rests on what you use the device for though. For some it's quite possible.
I have completely replaced my laptop with my TyTN. I have a ThinkOutside BT keyboard that I use when I'm on the road or in meetings.
Just record the entire damn meeting

That sounds good, do you use a mouse as well? Is it even possible to connect a mouse?
And I guess you never experice that the screen is too small.

Thanks

I have good eyesight, so I use small fonts to maximize screen realestate. ThinkOutside's drivers include BT mouse support but I've never tried it. I wonder if it actually places a movable mouse pointer on the screen?
The ThinkOutSide keyboard has built in shortcuts for the Office apps, softkeys, Today & start button and I use these alot. Most mark/cut/copy/paste functions are available on the keyboard as well. What's nice is that I have IM (communicator mobile) and DirectPush email going. With this setup, I can dynamically respond to emails and IMs without touching the screen while the meeting's in session then easily switch back to my notes (I use PW for note taking since it has text formatting capabilities).
Having PIE available for Realtime Googling (to check the Bullsh!t factor during Vendor presentations) is nice too
Ok, thanks. Hopefully I feel the same way about the size. A am not shure what PW stands for but Word or Wordpad will probably work fine.
PocketWord?
Jepp, I guess so I do not own a smartphone yet som I don´t know about the programs.

My EVO is my favorite tablet and laptop... Check the video out!

The quality isnt the best on the video but I had some fun getting a bt keyboard on my HTC EVO and I'm now ditching my really heavy i7 laptop that I bring to school for notes and will start just bringing a small case for my bt keyboard, my notebook and books and the extra battery in case I run out...
I just did this today but used it well with some text editing apps, now I need to find the best one for notes... How I wish I could program so I could put my ideas in practice and make some $$$$
Thanks to all devs that made this happen, its just amazing that I now own a pocket tablet/notebook pc
ggingerbread 6 ROM
Savaged Z 0.2 kernel with HDMI mirroring
well the direct link wont work because its my first post... youtube.com/watch?v=3VGtp9WlZmM
Props on being innovative. In the past I have seen flexible Bluetooth keyboards which are just a big soft pad which may suit your application a little better! Now find a way to support HDMI mirroring and get a small battery powered monitor with HDMI.
Very nice, Been thinking of doing this for a while but havn't been able to decide on a keyboard. Now all you need is adw to lock in landscape.
I got the adw but I locked it in portrait , Im just excited that I wont have to carry a heavy case around and I can use my phone to do pretty much the same work.
Now If I could only use the original apk for quickoffice on CM7 (which I only tried it briefly with no luck) this should be even better.
I know that the keyboard is kind of old news but I'm sure some people werent sure whether they could invest $50-$60 on a Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000 to work on their EVO... By the way, if you do get that, when you pair it with your phone, try entering 1234 on the phone and then typing 1234 (followed by the Enter button) on the keyboard. I got stuck on that for a while
brokenbmx06, HDMI is supported now on cm7
Ideas...
Instead of making it landscape I seem to remember a way for when connected to BT it will open car home. The new car home is customizable, so I figure it would be a lot easier and nicer to do that then the locked in portrait mode. then it will stop as soon as BT is disconnected. And im sure there are better alternatives for the word processing
I saw some awesome 7"-10" monitors online with battery packs for really cheap. Buy an HDMI to DVI adapter and get yourself one. If you have time, skills, and/or patience, you can crate a small case for your monitor with a slot for your EVO, HDMI mirror and voila you now have a 10" monitor and your Bluetooth keyboard.
and with this I am going to go dismantle the 10" monitor I got and get working on something like this. I just need to find a good power source.... xD
I feel that if I have to get a small screen I'd rather buy an android tablet, in fact, I'm saving money to get one but I'm waiting until I find a honeycomb tablet that's a little more settled... There are a bunch coming out, the Optimus 3D one looks cool, but I'm not sure which one to get yet.
By the way, I'm not using CM7 RC4 (Android 2.3.3) with the Savage Zen kernel 1.1.0 (with HDMI mirroring) Very stable and battery is amazing! I can get over 3 days (YES! THREE DAYS!) with little use. I know that because I went away over a weekend and forgot my phone, when I came back it was at 38% at 80 hours without charging. (Seidio 3500mAh battery tho)
Very clever. I've been taking notes just by the phones keyboard, never thought about doing this.
meh, not worth the effort.
Try using android seven with the monitor. Even more of a laptop experience. Change the lcd density as well

It is for me... after I got cm7 RC4, all I had to do is turn my bt keyboard on and pair it... I got over 20 pages of notes from my philosophy of law class in the past couple of weeks, since it all syncs with my dropbox account, not a problem to see all my notes on my computers whenever I need
I can't see your video because I'm on my evo now and yourlink is not clickable and ill never be able to manualy type in the url on my phone.
But I did want to say that I occaionaly flash to cm so i can us my bt keyboard.
I have a stowaway sierra. It's the best kb that I am aware of. It unfolds to about the size of a typical full size laptop kb. I got it on eBay a while back used for about $70. Sometimes they aren't even available, they stopped making them seveal years ago.
It supports SIP and hid. No SIP drivers for android but luckily we have cm bt hid support.
The problem I have with this is that in order for me to have bt hid support I have to deal with cms short comings. I can't deal with crappy GPS or buggy WLAN, or no Sprint visual voicemail. Other wise i would be right there with our guys. Case I take notes and work with documents all day everydAY.

Touchscreen Controlling Itself

I picked up my Nexus 7 about a half hour ago, woke it up and all of the sudden it started clicking things on its own. I wasn't even touching the screen at all. I had to lock the device for it to stop doing it, and after waking it back up the touchscreen was twonky. I would touch, but it wouldn't register until like the 3rd click. I restarted the device and its fine again.
I have the screen separation issue, though its not bad and doesnt bother me so I havent considered sending it back. But now that it has a mind of its own, its kind of freaking me out. I am unable to replicate it so far and I can't find anybody on these forums who has the same problem. Any ideas what is going on?

So it's a hardware issue and I should get it replaced?
I had the same thing happen to me a couple weeks ago.
After waking it up from sleep it started touching itself.
I restarted the device and it hasn't happened since.
Hope I don't have to return it.
My god! IT'S ALIVE!

I had the same thing happen on Saturday. There were odd solid white line outlines around the icons as well. I had to force it to power off and restart it. It's been okay since.
Ken
I too experienced the issue. I can replicate the issue by running "Gallery" app, select an album, set it on Slide Show mode. Within 15 mins or so, it will start malfunctioning.
I've discovered how to reproduce the problem on my tablet:
1. Put the tablet to sleep by closing smart cover or using a magnet
2. Plug in wall charger
3. Open the smart cover and the touchscreen malfunctions
The screen does not malfunction when I put the device to sleep by pressing the power button and insert the charger.
Can anyone else confirm this happens to them or is it just me?
My nexus7 is controlling itself after 10 mins of playing a game... this is nuts?
EDIT:
Really PI$$ED off now. Travelled to the shop where I bought it. Told them they said "they have to see the problem" I sit there for 25 minutes playing a game, google earth...anything to create this problem.
NOTHING.
get back home!! gusss what? stupid tablet is controlling itself again! OMG this crap is annoying.
edit: I sold the nexus. It had a fault on the screen. I paid £70 and managed to get £80 for it so am happy with that at least
Same issue!! Is someone remotely hacking in??
I have seen the exact same issue on mine. Weird and very worrying. Have seen apps being opened and pages being scrolled. Has only happened twice in the past few weeks (that I have noticed). Have checked firewall logs on my home network, but unfortunately my ISP has made the UI more 'user friendly' even in advance mode so can't get any actually useful information from the logs (though I don't have any port forwarding active). My only guess is that it is therefore:
A) Random HW/SW issue - seems unlikely, but possible I guess
B) Some nefarious app giving external access (all apps from Play Store though)
Will try and get a video of it next time to put on Youtube nad have installed the logcat app (though to be honest I don't really know how to use it).
Anyone else seen this or have any suggestions on what to do?

May I ask. Have you used a case that has a magnet that may have touched the screen? I theorized that this may have happened to mine because right where the magnet clipped the case is right where fault started. When i touched the screen just on the edge in that spot it started going crazy.
So I sold as faulty

Hi - I have briefly (only use it when travelling and have it in a bag to protect it from knocks and scrapes), but the case was never around when the screen has been off doing it's own thing....so I would be surprised if there was a link between a small magnet being near it a few times and a recurrent fault of some kind.

I read somebody else used a case with a magnet and thought that slight chance that it could've caused the fault. I know on the one I had I could instantly recreate the problem by touching in that place a few times. perhaps just a coincidence?

My device has a similar issue randomly. Detects inputs that aren't there. Most of the time it is one prolonged input. Sleep then wake and problem solved. I don't know if I have the screen seperation issue or not. My device is only two weeks old and has never seen a magnet before.

Bought 4 Nexus 7's for the family for Christmas and one unit had this issue. Read up about it before returning it the next day. Apparently it's a problem with the digitizer (I think that was what the hardware piece was called). Basically made the N7 unusable because it'd detect other "ghost" touches. Especially annoying when trying to unlock the device. Long story short, the unit was returned to Staples and replaced with a new one. So if you're is still under the "new buy" warranty I'd definitely try for a replacement.

Ditto, + 1 here and my ex-N7 16GB WiFi unit was from local Staples, 1 of 2 "open-box" ones that they had in stock, no wonder manager was "kind" enough to approve a 10% discount for it, hmmm - SOB quite possibly knew it was a problem unit returned by another customer & just wanted to pass it on. It had 4.1.2 loaded and intially, the OTA upgrade to 4.2 seemed to make things better (false.)
It was horrible with the sluggish & un-responsive touchscreen and even unlocking, especially bad over time as I had managed to unlock the bootloader & root it to load custom Rom. It's as if the hardware had a keylogger installed and/or was hacked remotely, trying to take over the tablet and typing its own command as I input gmail account info & password - freaking mad crazy, to the point as others said, I started checking the wireless router's firewall & security logs, etc. for signs of breach, etc. and even release the DHCP to get a new external IP on our Fios link. Disabling WiFi seemed to at least "calm" it down but made the device useless. GPS radio/receiver also seemed to be defective. To make a long story short, it has been returned to Staple as we are within the holidays/14 days technology product return & exchange timeframe - and, of course, all 16GB WiFi models are out of stock everywhere - ended up paying the difference & traded up to a 32GB WiFi model - S/N beginning with "CAO"s and has 4.1.2 on it
Noticed the immediate difference - this one is perfect and no hardware issues whatsoever - and so far so good and with all the issues cited about 4.2 - staying with 4.1.2 for now by disabling the fraemwork, etc. to stop the annoying OTA upgrade reminder. Unlocked & rooted, tweaked it with the goodies & Flash Player 11.x loaded with Chrome browser removed, this is what a N7 should be like.
I have had a similar issue twice. I was reading a webpage when all of a sudden a pop up appears asking where I want to send it to, then it gives me a list eg. Dropbox , email, etc. I never press anything and I didn't even know what wanted to be sent lol. Hopefully its nothing serious.

A truck rolled over my ZenFone II - ZE551 ML [BACK/SOUND/CAMERA SEEM INTACT]

Hello peeps,
I had just recently got this phone, its been 2 months exact and yesterday this happened. It was upside down when it rolled over it (was on the road), I was surprised to know that its back merely seems damaged (see pictures to have better idea).
- Speaker seems to be working fine. (SIM working in it!)
- LED indicator is blinking too and working as it should.
- It turns on/off without any problem.
- The power and volume buttons are also working fine.
I had lock screen passcode on so can't access the data, but it connects to computer fine. I wonder if replacing the display and screen digitizer will be the only things I need to make it work.
PS : I had no screen protector/back case or anything on it.
EDIT 1 : Touch is still working. I just somehow like entered the emergency mode and I can hear the dial pad tones.
EDIT 2: Data accessed!!

Don't think a tempered glass would've saved his phone from a truck lol. I'm impressed by how little damage it took actually
Please keep us informed if you find any damage other than the screen and back.
Wow sorry about that but also glad to see how it was able to withstand a beating like that :banghead:
Make a youtube video. It might go viral if you can show it still works ie: sound phone call. You might make enough money to buy a new phone.

If you had usb debugging enabled, you can completely remove the lockscreen and access your data. There is a reddit post detailing how to do it step by step. Please Google because I don't have a bookmark. I did this to my Z3 when i got damaged. If you didn't have USB debugging enabled, you'll have to find some hack to do that before attempting.
Also replacing the screen and maybe the digitizer (if damaged) should get your phone back up and running.

Hey if USB debugging was not enabled, you might have to find a way to do it. And I did try doing some Google search but couldn't come across anything! Really sorry but the thread was on Reddit and you should probably search for it there. I'm not sure of the exact keywords I used!
Touch is still working. I just somehow like entered the emergency mode and I can hear the dial pad tones. I can try entering the pattern now, but I don't remember if I had to like swipe after pressing the power button or double tapping the screen or it was just the code straight away after pressing the power button or tapping the screen, could someone please help me with the two options as how they work and also just send screenshot of the lock screen with pass code on so I have the idea about it and all?
EDIT : @thedisturbedone : I managed to pull the lock away as touch screen is working haha!
Is there anyway possible that I can use it via PC? Asus PC link requires the app running in background. Also anyway possible to backup the contacts now?

Hey there, thanks for sharing...been away on Thanksgiving. You want to save your data? Hmm...good question. Here's what I would try to do:
- Contacts should be backed up in Google - so no worries there...you can access via. http://contacts.google.com I think
- Connect the phone to PC, Install ASUS PC Link. You should have the app running on the phone.
- I would then try to drag all the files you need to your computer,
- Or the other thing you can do is if the information is crucial....And I don't promote doing this, and this is not an official ASUS fix...because you will void your warranty..sooo anything issue that happens is on you and ASUS will not help you if something goes wrong...is to root your device, install Titanium Backup, and use that to save all your data (apps and everything) into Google Drive, or Dropbox. Then, you can restore that data back to your phone when it's fixed.
What about micro USB to HDMI and then follow on the big screen what you're doing?
@ASUS_Khang : I wanted to have your attention for the giveaway thing as my story is all posted here. Thanks for the input anyway.

I have recovered the data from the phone itself, the remaining things are notes/contacts which I can't do via connecting the phone to PC now and I had backed up contacts already so no worries.
Haven't read the whole thread, not sure what your plans are, but thought I'd share a recent experience.
My wife knocked her phone off a table at a restaurant a few weeks ago. Landed on the corner when it hit the tile floor. Screen shattered. Was still usable, but bits of glass were flaking off.
I ordered her a new screen & digitizer from amazon. Took about 3 weeks to show up. I replaced it using a plastic spudger tool I had from an old iPhone screen replacement kit, and some patience. The screen replacement kit I ordered came with some double sided tape to reseal everything. Took about 90 minutes to complete as I was taking my time. The replacement went flawlessly and you can't even tell her screen has been replaced. I'd recommend trying that before replacing the phone, unless you want to.

Need help controlling phone with broken screen

I know there are a lot of these threads but my intention is a bit different. This phone I gave to my daughter a few months ago and she cracked the entire screen (no touches register whatsoever). I want to take the phone and repurpose it to simply act as a webcam and point at my 3d printer. The phone is rooted and nothing on the phone needs to be saved. I bought an OTG cable without really reading into it enough to see the default one won't work.
So here's what I want to do. Somehow get some kind of vnc server/anything installed so that I can control it. The wifi currently connects so I'm good in that regards. The one damn hurdle that has stopped me is that the phone does not currently have debugging enabled so I cannot install apks over adb.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The value of this phone is far outweighed by the price of a new screen so an actual repair is not in the cards.
