[Q] Transient Image Persistence on N4 screen. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am getting burn in/ghosting effect. I know that burn in is not an issue on this screen, just on AMOLED, but this is very similar... the image stays printed and it is very noticeable sometimes, specially with full brighness and dark backgrounds. Is someone else getting this problem? I have almost 2 months with the device, it starts doing this like 2 or 3 weeks ago and I think it is getting worst.
I'll try to post some pictures soon.
Totally stock btw, no screen calibration at all.

Nothing here. Rev 11 device

[Q] Yellow spots on screen

Hi folks. I have a problem with my Nexus 7 tablet. On the screen shows yellow spots. I use cm, parandroid and stock Rom, on the all roms spots is showing. CPU I always set to 1 GHz rather than 1.3
Please help me.
Check if its backlight bleeding, crank brightness to maximum and view black picture or something, I have similar problem on the iPhone, 2 bright yellow spots started to appear just one month after warranty expired. I'd RMA it.

Is an AMOLED burn-in a big risk for the GS4?

I am thinking about getting a Galaxy S4 now that my contract is up. I'm a little OCD, and I already know a screen burn-in will annoy me. Will the screen last two years till my next upgrade? I mostly would use the phone to text, listen to music, and browse the web.
If a burn-in has a high risk of actually happening, do you have any suggestions for another phone I could look into? Thanks.
Never had this happen on any Samsung phone I owned before.
I have had both the Captivate and SGS2, never had any screen burn-in with either.
Didn't see any from S1-S4.

amoled screen dont burn, at least not in the traditional way plasma do
One day, i left my S3 on my charger because i was going out of the country for 3 weeks, for some reason, my screen stayed on and it never shut down, it was on for 3 full weeks, the phone was pretty hot but there was never any impact on my screen quality
Well people on YouTube tend to say it burns in...

I've had all the Galaxy S phones and both Galaxy Notes, I've only seen burn in on my GS2. It was on the wifi/network signal portion of the status bar and was only noticeable if I really looked at it.
But then again I didn't have any of them for two years.
no such animal as burn-in. get it. you'll love it
Burn ins do exist....but they typically happen in areas you will never notice
On my Samsung infuse, I got a burn in on the status bar...it was only visible on a pure whit background, and even then it wasn't that noticeable...and since the status bar is up 99% of the tome you would never notice...I didn't notice it until I had my phone for about 2-2 1/2 years
It also got a slight burn in from the Samsung logo on bootups, but this only happened due to my constant flashing of roms and kernels I was compiling...self testing...and a lot of times they wouldn't boot...they would get stuck at the Samsung logo...and often times I would leave it at that logo for hours (pure black screen with Samsung written in bright white)- so three years of development on my own cause a screen burn in...this would never happen to anybody but those who are constantly flashing things they know probably won't boot
So do burn ins happen? - yes
Is it likely you will get one in two years? - no
If you get one will it be noticeable? - most likely not
Do burn ins happen quickly? - no

Nah, you should be fine. Unless you leave the screen on for hours with static image on it on higher brightness, you should be fine. And I'd assume it should be much better with newer AMOLEDs when it comes to life span of the screens.
Doesn't seem to be a problem except under extreme circumstances. This is my first OLED phone and it is amazing. I use mine in bed in the dark a lot and the blacks are glorious. I've been spoiled. Don't think I can go back to LCD now.

How many people have this screen problem?

If you put the phone on lower brightness or auto-brightness, do you see faint vertical and horizontal "streaks" of discoloration or shading? It's especially apparent in the dark, and on grey backgrounds. My phone has this exact problem, and I tried taking it to a Verizon store to exchange it and they refused, because the two S4's on display had similar issues (although less apparent). So either this is a very common problem on the S4 or I'm just incredibly unlucky. Would like to hear from other Galaxy S4 owners to see how widespread this really is.

My issue isn't smearing, it's permanent, faint vertical and horizontal streaks or lines.

Strange, my S4 doesn't has.. But my old GNexus had vertical lines visible only with white or green background.
I think is lucky.. If you can, change it or ask to technical assistance Samsung for display change..
I am also having same issue in my note2

I've only seen this happening within CWM when flashing new ROMs to my phone.
All my screens had it (I had it changed five times for various other issues).
Mine seems to be fine...

Yup I have it too. The store are refusing to give me a replacement

try to test the screen first.
Go to Dial Keypad and enter the code below:
*#0*#
Test your screen by dimming and check if lines would show clearer.

How were you able to convince them to change it that many times? All within the 14 days?

I didn't get a 1-1. Went to the service centre. First time it was an issue with the sound crackling but somehow they changed the screen when they shouldn't (and I still hate them for it).
The replaced screen had a greenish blotch in the middle, so back it went.
Third had two dead pixels so I sent it back.
Fourth they replaced on the spot for it had a big piece of dust inside the screen.
Fifth has a small speck of dust under the screen which they refused to change for me in the end.
Still quite a bummer that five screens later I still ended up with a less-than-perfect screen. But I just gave up and it doesn't affect me too much nowadays.
I have the same problem.

I'm having the same problem as well..
That's unfortunate. I haven't experience that on mine and hopefully never will. Possibly just a faulty device.
Ive vertical lines really bsd!

Yup, I have this issue too on my international S4 (GT-I9500). This only happens with grey. The screen tests for red, green and blue are perfect. And they're only usually visible in the dark. Best way to show them the problem is to search 'solid grey' on Google Images, save one of them and show them the image on full screen in the dark. After seeing that, it'll be pretty much impossible to deny that it is a problem. I took it to service and got a screen replacement under warranty, but it didn't help. Still has those stupid lines. Most apparent in the dark on solid gray. I'm taking it back to the store on Monday, if they replace the handset and that fixes it, I'll get back to you.
Me too
I think this is another variant of the smudges that are apparent in amoled screens sometimes. Search Google for lines in amoled displays or something similar. There's loads of threads talking about the same thing.
At any rate, it seems to just be luck of the draw as to how bad it is, or if you even get it at all.
At least, if you have them, they don't worsen over time, and any phones that are made with amoled screens can get them. I have two lines myself. I've just gotten used to it really. Don't see them now, unless I look hard for them.

Nexus 4 screen burn in issue

Hi all,
I've had my N4 since January, and I've noticed that I've started to suffer from a screen burn-like issue. I use Dolphin Browser, and use phase beam live wallpaper (purple one, not red). When I've used dolphin for a few minutes and return to my home screen, I notice that the refresh and '+' icon from dolphin browser are imprinted on the screen. It goes away after about a minute or when I reboot the phone, but I wondered if anyone knew why this would be happening or if there's any solution? Also, when checking my work schedule on Polaris office, I notice that the grid pattern from the excel file is imprinted on my homescreen for a few moments too. Do you think it is worth RMAing for a new device? Everything else is fine.
I'm running stock, unrooted.
Thanks
Bump.
It has been explained to me that IPS displays do not get screen burn in. They just "ghost" momentarily. I don't know of a way to avoid this other than possibly lowering the brightness? As you said, it goes away after a few minutes, or a reboot. A reboot should always fix this kind of problem on IPS displays.
But to answer your question: An RMA won't fix it. This happens with all IPS displays, as far as I know.

I bought my Nexus 4 back in march and sent it in because of a dark vertical line on the left side of the screen that would not go away. Got my replacement about 2 weeks ago and am having the screen burn in issue you are having too. I never had this problem with my old device.
I'll probably wait a month or two and send this one in too if it continues to bother me.

Wow, after reading this i hope some experienced user could tune into this thread and elaborate on what is happening here?
I'm not really worried of getting it any time soon, as i heard it's not supposed to happen on the screen the Nexus 4 sports, however, i could be wrong..Anyone?
This is common with IPS displays, and is not called "burn in" as the effects are temporary. True "burn in" is permanent.
Rather, this is referred to as "image retention" or "image persistence." It was/is a big problem with the new retina Macbook Pros which showed a severe form of this problem (my first one included, got a replacement which is much better, but still shows a bit of image retention sometimes).

I've had mine since May and I am just now experiencing this. I have tried displaying a pure white screen overnight a few days a week, but I am unwilling to leave my phone turned off for a few days. Is there any other remedy?
You guys are asking for a solution to wear and tear? Put the Nexus 4 in a box and don't use it.
I have this with the Amazon app :') seems like really dark blacks stay on the screen for a few minutes even after the app is closed not a big issue but it got me worried the first time

I have the same problem in my LG G2, its IPS Too and have 2 weeks old. I think its normal in IPS Screens.
Happens to me sometimes with the facebook app. When using the app for a longer time the top menu bar stays slightly visible afterwards. I only really see it on my home screen, though.

Same here
I use Screen Burn-in Tool (Play Store)
play. google. com /store / apps / details?id= com. codefortravel. amoled_screen_burn_in&hl=en
(remove spaces)
Run it a few times while charging, problem solved for me.

Pixel flickers?

Anyone else? What should my concern level be? Any advice is appreciated.
Happened last night, hasn't happened today.
When in settings I got white, red, blue and green pixels randomly spotting my screen. Mostly on top and around images like the search button and around status icons.
Is this an indication of problems to come or is anyone else getting the pixel flickers and not worried about it?
Thanks in advance.

I saw this for the first time at work yesterday. Customer came in and had a single green pixel stuck on her screen.

No stuck pixels on mine but I ended up taking it back. Didn't realize i had a lemon until i got my hands on this gem. The screen is brighter, the battery doesn't get as hot and the whole system seems smoother.
