Nexus 4 screen burn in issue - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've had my N4 since January, and I've noticed that I've started to suffer from a screen burn-like issue. I use Dolphin Browser, and use phase beam live wallpaper (purple one, not red). When I've used dolphin for a few minutes and return to my home screen, I notice that the refresh and '+' icon from dolphin browser are imprinted on the screen. It goes away after about a minute or when I reboot the phone, but I wondered if anyone knew why this would be happening or if there's any solution? Also, when checking my work schedule on Polaris office, I notice that the grid pattern from the excel file is imprinted on my homescreen for a few moments too. Do you think it is worth RMAing for a new device? Everything else is fine.
I'm running stock, unrooted.
Thanks

Bump.

It has been explained to me that IPS displays do not get screen burn in. They just "ghost" momentarily. I don't know of a way to avoid this other than possibly lowering the brightness? As you said, it goes away after a few minutes, or a reboot. A reboot should always fix this kind of problem on IPS displays.
But to answer your question: An RMA won't fix it. This happens with all IPS displays, as far as I know.

I bought my Nexus 4 back in march and sent it in because of a dark vertical line on the left side of the screen that would not go away. Got my replacement about 2 weeks ago and am having the screen burn in issue you are having too. I never had this problem with my old device.
I'll probably wait a month or two and send this one in too if it continues to bother me.

Wow, after reading this i hope some experienced user could tune into this thread and elaborate on what is happening here?
I'm not really worried of getting it any time soon, as i heard it's not supposed to happen on the screen the Nexus 4 sports, however, i could be wrong..Anyone?

This is common with IPS displays, and is not called "burn in" as the effects are temporary. True "burn in" is permanent.
Rather, this is referred to as "image retention" or "image persistence." It was/is a big problem with the new retina Macbook Pros which showed a severe form of this problem (my first one included, got a replacement which is much better, but still shows a bit of image retention sometimes).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_persistence

I've had mine since May and I am just now experiencing this. I have tried displaying a pure white screen overnight a few days a week, but I am unwilling to leave my phone turned off for a few days. Is there any other remedy?

You guys are asking for a solution to wear and tear? Put the Nexus 4 in a box and don't use it.

I have this with the Amazon app :') seems like really dark blacks stay on the screen for a few minutes even after the app is closed not a big issue but it got me worried the first time

I have the same problem in my LG G2, its IPS Too and have 2 weeks old. I think its normal in IPS Screens.

Happens to me sometimes with the facebook app. When using the app for a longer time the top menu bar stays slightly visible afterwards. I only really see it on my home screen, though.

Same here
I use Screen Burn-in Tool (Play Store)
play. google. com /store / apps / details?id= com. codefortravel. amoled_screen_burn_in&hl=en
(remove spaces)
Run it a few times while charging, problem solved for me.

Burn-in anyone else?

Anyone but me have this problem?
Haven't checked... and not going to do either.... as it's a non issue in normal usage (i'm seldom staring at a completely white screen just to see that the status bar area has aged the screen differently) and a "feature" of amoled technology

It's there on most colors! I took white cause it is easier to see on a photo but it is there all the time! I'm not retarded!
And the worst part is that the little part that is whiter is the only part that is really sharp like it used to be, while the rest of the screen never is really white and sharp but instead has an uneven yellowish color. And it is worse than I could capture on photo.
I love my phone im not trying to mock it.
I'm not even gonna check
Because if I do, I'll notice it every single time I use the phone, and it'll annoy me to death.
If you don't see it you don't have it. It's there all the time. Of course it's only in games or reading stuff that is full screen. But anything except the black status bar!
Ditto problem.

I noticed it just days before you made the post, interesting timing.
Hi All,
came across this thread when looking for a solution for SGS1.
it seems that Burn in is indeed a problem for AMOLED screens.
in my situation, I've found a burn cause by Waze (of course, any app that would leave the screen on would cause it).
sadly enough, my phone is only 6 months old and I use Waze ~30 min. a day - not much for a burn you think? wrong!
for now, I've set Waze to hide the point bar and the zoom control, but still many objects on the screen are static - including the notification bar.
does anyone has a good solution?
Same problem!
But in reality it is not a real problem..
AMOLED is still not ready for prime time, but at least Samsung is trying to improve on it with every iteration. Can't wait for 40"+ AMOLED HD TVs.
Before waranty goes off demand to change display..

Hey there, might be interesting to know on which built your phone is operating?
Mine was delivered in may w/ 2.3.3, since I'm on a 2.3.5 based rom, I got better colors / sharpness and less side effects (greenish tint)
Maybe Samsung changed the way how to control the display? (hardware drivers)
just my 2 cents..
Yes
Just changed the screen last month
Now its ok
Dunno if it will be burned again
Also dunno what caused it

Irrelevant. It's an AMOLED hardware-related thing, nothing to do with software. My screen has burn-in, your screen has/will, every screen does/will.
When somebody says their screen has none they just don't see it. Because really, all our phones one day or later will show it.
I don't use any apps that ever hide the status bar so even if I did have it, it wouldn't bother me.

Hi
My notification area is a bit darker than the rest of my screen. It's only visible when screen is white, and I can't identify any leftovers from any icons like the battery or Wifi icon.
My SGS2 is about ½ year old, and in daily use it's no problem at all, but I wonder how it will look when my SGS2 is 1 or 2 years old

Screen burn?

I've had my Nexus 4 for about 3 months now, and I'm starting to have a serious issue with image persistence on the screen. As of recently it has gotten very bad, and when I browse Chrome for 5 minutes, and flick the tab away, revealing the brown-grey screen, I can see the URL bar along with the URL address burnt on to the screen. It seems to go away after a while, but actually if I turn the brightness up to maximum and look it is still there. Does anyone else suffer from this same problem?
I haven't yet but I'd say get Screen test set it to the white test setting set your phone to not turn off screen when charging an leave over night that might help clear the screen burn. I haven't had this issue on any of my androids.
Simply; yes. I think that's a bit more widespread issue than one could think.
What I have noticed is it eventually does clear. But it seems to be taking longer and longer to do so. Right now (it has been about 30 minutes) the URL bar and the address has gone, but there is still a white patch where they were. I've read about IPS-LCD image persistence, but most sites say it clears after about two minutes.
zero burn in here, ive have mine for about a month. how bright do you keep your screen?
Yea, for me it's just like 2 - 4 minutes and the burn is gone.
I have auto-brightness on most of the time, typically it ranges from the lowest setting, to about the middle setting. When I'm in the house I turn off auto-brightness. I've just checked again and it is still there, that's almost an hour now. I haven't been using it either, it's been in sleep, but I have been periodically checking it.

How long have you had the phone for?
I've had it since Christmas.
Haven't got that on mine - if I were you I'd send it back under warranty and Google or LG should should send you a replacement if its a defect in the screen

Huh, I thought LCD screens could not be "burned in".
Interesting (and no, I haven't seen it on mine).
Yeah I don't see this problem, and I thought this was an issue with AMOLED screens and the like
One thing that annoying me on my nexus 4. You can see on the left of my screen, straight dark line from top to bottom. I haven't drop my nexus before. It appeared on dark colours especially grey colours. For your info its start to appeared when 10 minutes screen on after about 20 minutes screen off. Is it normal? Anyone here have the same problem?

I exchanged mine for the same type of screen defect. It's definitely a defect. My new one is perfect..
I dont think that lcd screen has this issue. My galaxy nexus has screen burn in and it is very awful

This isn't screen burn in, it is called "Transient Image Persistence" and it is not permanent like the AMOLED burn in... this thing dissapears relatively fast but it's still annoying... I have the same problem.

The problem is though I have had it since the end of December. Would they still accept it? Like I said in the OP though it seems to be getting worse, before the image would at least go away. But now it seems to have retained it permanently.

Yeah I also have this problem, I have a couple of vertical lines running up my screen, they are only visible if I turn it to full brightness, and have it on a grey background though.

By perfect do you mean it doesn't retain the image at all, or that it fades relatively quick? I wouldn't mind if it went after like a minute or two, but mine seems to never go away.

Yeah I mentioned that in the OP. The problem is though mine has still not faded. I basically have a permanent Chrome URL box at the top of my screen, with a sort of white mark around it. If I have used chrome recently it becomes fully visible at any brightness. But if I leave it for a few hours it is only fully visible at maximum brightness.

I'm on full stock, and not rooted. Like I said I have already looked at that online, but it is supposed to disappear after a few minutes. Mine is retained for hours, actually it hasn't went away since I've noticed it, so it's pretty much permanent.

Have to send my tablet into Asus already for service :(

So i noticed about a week ago when I bring up a black or grey background there was a red smudge in the pixels about two inches long. Finally got around to contacting Asus and i have to send it in now.
Just curious, does anyone else have this?
you can see it next to storage and battery
I do, only noticeable when the screen is all black.. Never really bothered me..

I don't remember where, but I've seen something similar to this on another device. I'm guessing there's electronics pressed against the screen in those areas, creating an effect sort of like when you push on an LCD screen with your finger.

I'm starting to develop screen burn-in...anyone else?

So, I was hoping when I picked up the Note 3 last December that the general screen burn-in issues on Samsung AMOLED panels were a thing of the past. Apparently I was wrong...
Over the last few days, I've noticed that in games, or anything that takes up the entire screen, the area where the notification bar is located is burnt in, making it a few shades lighter than what is currently displayed on the screen. I can try to take a few photos, but I need to charge up my point and shoot.
Kind of disappointing, as I haven't had any of the problems other users have had with this phone, and it's been solid for me since December. But it's an eyesore to me now. I do have a warranty program with Best Buy, where I purchased the device, but I'm thinking they would give me a refurbished replacement, which I don't want.
Has anyone else experienced this? Should I opt for a replacement device if this is considered a defect?
go for replacement if you can.
The only disadvantage of Amoled display is that it has burn in issues with prolong useage.
so you can ask for replacement
it would be better.
No issues here, but I use an Xposed module that makes all apps full screen so the notification bar is hidden 99% of the time.
Go to the play store and get the app called Screen Burn-In Tool. Depending on how bad it is it will help. Maybe get Nova Launcher and set the status bar to transparent. I've had my Note 3 since release and have it set to transparent and I zero ghosting. The app needs to run for a few hours to work properly. Good luck.

It's a pretty common problem with AMOLED displays. My Galaxy Nexus had pretty severe burn in where the navigation buttons and status bar were. The keyboard was also burned into the screen pretty good.

image retention?

So far this has been the best mobile device I have ever owned from Palm, to BlackBerry, Motorola, iPhone, Samsung, Nexus, Asus. This has also been the best OS I have used to date. No lag, no battery drain, no boot loop, and I get a removable battery.
Too many features others lack for the same price with less storage for the same money as the V20.
All that being said there is a problem with this phone that also ocurred with my V10. I keep the screen on at maximum brightness all the time since battery is not an issue with this phone (I have many spare batteries). About 7 months into my V10 I started noticing "ghosting" along the left and right edge of the screen. I use white icons which means I always have a dark wall paper. I could notice a very thin whitish smear along the edges. Its not bleed like you sometimes see on the second screen. What I notice goes away when you turn off the screen a while or you switch to a lighter colored background. Then I started noticing that icons for notifications were beginning to burn into the screen when using a dark background... Very odd because this is almost always an issue with OLED screens and not LCD displays like on the LG phones. Then the screen burn in started occurint on the main screen, typically when a bright image is on the screen for a long time and when switching to a screen image with a dark background the borders of the previous image are still visible on the new image. Once the phone is off for while, again, the retention issue goes away but comes back if the same image is on the screen for more more than 30 seconds or so.
Thankfully This does not affect video playback or video streaming. Its only with digital images, logos, or text.
For those not familiar with this problem its called image retention.
I placed a warranty claim on the V10 and a new phone was sent. I traded in the replacement phone immediatley for the V20. And now only 4 months into ownership the exact same problem is occurring... Grrrreat.
When I called LG about the V10 they had no idea what I was talking about. I pointed out that this issue has been discussed in the forums for the last year.
Are you also seeing this issue?

it will go away its not really screen burn in, lcd's have this issue and its common, turn screen off for 24 hours and let the lcd cool off and the ghosting will go away. The LCD's dont have the same screen burn in that the OLED screen would.. but latent images will occur if your keeping it on non stop and high brightness. IPS at its best.
also try and use the screen burn in app and let it spam the screen with the multi colors overnight, this will help cover the burn in like ghost images.
24 hours? Hmm... I will try 8 hours tops because of obligations I need to be available by phone all the time.
I have had IPS displays before that were on all the time and didnt see this issue before...and I run all my devices into the ground.
My Plasma TV has latency issues, my Samsung AMOLED displays have burn in, Samsung LCDs had vertical banding, this LG IPS display has latency...so which displays are immune from premature (in less than one 12 month) issues?

V10 , V20 , G5's displays ( maybe include G6) are quantum dot IPS so they all meet image retention . Other IPS displays never meet this problem
I noticed this issue on my v20. If the phone remains off for a bit the image goes away. It can be annoying but if it doesn't hurt the phone
Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
The screen on the V20 isn't a regular IPS, it's a "quantum dot IPS" which may be more prone to some degree of image retention due to their form of illumination (I don't know a lot about it but it's a kind of atomic luminesence) which supposedly increases colour accuracy and range while lowering the power requirement for for the backlight.
It's possible this might be the root cause of the 'ghosting' but I'm mostly guessing.
Ironic though if QD displays are prone to ghosting, and LG knowingly equipped thier phone with an always-on second screen with that tech.
Yes. I'm on my 2nd replacement for the same issue. The phone I'm typing on is now having it. The screens last anywhere from 6 to 8 months before breaking down.
Glad to see that this isn't only happening to me, I find it super annoying, I never had this happen before on other devices, and it's an unacceptable occurrence that of course nothing will be done about it, I for one can't wait to get rid of the V20.
same thing started happening to my v20 recently, around 4-5 month old phone. it's an annoyance that should happen to a flagship phone, but it looks like we're SOL...

Tilted Pixel lines Problem.
I am also facing same problem with my 3 months old LG V20 Phone.
My phone have one more Problem.
I can see pixel lining (in whole screen) even though it is quad hd display. But the problem is that it is not horizontal, It is tilted 10 degree, and there is no vertical lines that I can recognize . And it is annoying to me.
If the screen is equally pixelated then I should have seen both vertical and horizontal lines of pixel equally like you can see in TV LCD Displays.
I encourage anyone whose 12 month warranty is about to expire to file a claim. And not use the phone at maximum brightness unless outdoors. Luckily I had some other issues with the phone like NFC and the speaker being somewhat distorted and the phone was replaced for those issues as well. If you see any deterioration in any other hardware aspect of your V20 you should definitely file a warranty claim.
I plan to keep this warranty replacement for another year as the only phone with the image quality I like is the Sony Experia XZ Premium which doesn't work with Verizon. Believe it or not I compared the V20 to virtually every new OLED flagship anr they all had a dingy yellowy color compared to the V20, including the new iPhone X. The Sony was the only phone that had both the color accuracy like and LCD but the deep color pop of an OLED. Best of both worlds with the only 4K screen and battery life better than my V20

It is my understanding that the V20 will get image retention, but not actually burn-in. Is this true?
Also, I have searched for solutions to the image retention problem. Most solutions advise the use of apps that cycle through colors or simply leaving the device off for awhile. I used a color cycle app, which helped, but the issue returns. And leaving my device off is, simply put, not an option. I did come across a post about replacing the thermal paste. Any truth to this method?
But I'm wondering, if I go through with taking my phone apart to apply paste, wouldn't it be beneficial to also replace the screen as well? Or am I missing some factor I haven't read about yet?

Once image retention sets in it will return once the screen is on for long enough. I ran those screen burn in apps overnight for months. Made no difference at all. The only option is to completely replace the display if you can get it cheap.

No need to do all that, install Night Screen by paper airplane dev team and set the slider at around 80%(make sure you're on the moon icon). Also let the screen cool off before you do this and set it up. You won't really notice the filter much and all the retention problems will be a thing of the pass.
@porscheoscar - No kidding lol Replacement LCD are not cheap. I'm gonna keep an eye on them cause I want to keep my V20 as long as possible. One of the last phones, that I'm aware of, I can carry an extra battery for. I love switching batteries while my friends with their latest, greatest phones watch their battery percentage like a hawk hehe
@salvichulo - Thanks for the tip ^_^ I installed it & am giving it a workout. I try not to be on my phone a lot, but I'm a gamer ;P Once phones became powerful enough to really game on, I killed my Xbox Live account & game exclusively on my phone. When I get the money I'm gonna look into getting an Android Emulator for my laptop.

why don't you root your phone? By rooting your phone you can change color setting by using custom kernel it help you with this problem .
