Help! Where did my space go? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I won a Nexus 4 8GB at a raffle at work yesterday. I currently have a Note 2 and an Optimus G but I'm going to keep the Nexus 4. Anyway right out of the box before doing anything I noticed it said I had 4 GB of 5.66 Total GB free. Why do I only have 5.66 total GB of internal space? And why do I only have 4 GB free right out of the box? Also I rooted, made a nandroid back up, installed a few apps and flashed the Xylon rom, now I onlay have 2.5 GB!!!! This is just rediculous. Does anyone know how I can free up some space? I don't store music or other large files but I NEED to be able to store a few nandroid back ups and a few roms.

Just factory reset and start over. Then manage your stuff.

A couple gb is the android system, etc., your basic behind the curtain stuff. The phone came with a bunch of the Google and other apps installed, killing another gb or so.
And then you wasted a ton of space on unnecessary fluff.

5.66 GB is all that you get with an 8 GB device as the rest is used by the OS for system apps and such. The 16 GB only has 12.9 available.

You should have 5.7 or so free out of the gate. Something is eating up near 2gb of space. Factory reset.

Actually that's would only be 100 MB of space and not 2 GB. 5.7 - 5.6 = 0.1 GB = 100 MB. And in his case 5.7 - 5.66 = 0.04 or 40 MB. Whcih is nothing.

What are you on about, read the OP. Your maths is right (sort of, its actually 40.96MB) but you are working with the wrong figures.
You seen to have missed the fact that the OP has only 4GB free, ie he has around 1.5GB eaten up.

more importantly OP where do you work that gives away free nexus' lol

Just keep 1 nandroid on the phone just in case...download rom zips when you need them and then delete them...space saved.

Sorry 'she'. So it should be easy to find what has used the space using apps or other more 'technical' means. However as its a new phone I would be inclined to factory reset it or even better just download factory image and reflash.
If you have missing space on a new phone then I would wonder what else is wrong.
Maybe the phone was a 'return'.

13gb of 16gb free.

Okay I tried to search the forum but it was giving me "token expired" errors even though I tried searching multiple times and even after reloading. So I'm sorry if this is a repost or has already been asked!
Anyway the Nexus 7 gives has 13gb of 16gb free for use. Is there anyway this can be further increased?

no. the reason for this is android takes up a bit of that space.
Nope no way. Its partitioned for the operating system. Just like we have 1GB of ram but only 900mbs is usable.

check out the storage space used on a new desktop or laptop pc as soon as you bought it.. You will see some of it taken up .. by windows there is also a Recovery partition (often hidden from user ) as well as a cache partition boot partition and partition tables also take up space on the storage disk.
This device was designed to use cloud base storage .I for one think its a great idea.. But i would love for some of the games to be able to play across OTG ...
Thank you for all your replies. I guess I'll be relying on OTG for my games and movies then. Already ordered the cable bought the app

32GB Nexus 7 Storage Space on Arrival
Guys,
I fully realise that on arrival (new) that the N7 will have a certain amount of storage used for the OS, Installed App's etc. Roughly how much should this be? I received my 32GB N7 yesterday and on looking at available storage it was 27.63 GB so effectively 4.5GB used. Is this normal as it seems a lot for the ROM and few apps!

Quick primer in storage...
Manufacturers and operating systems use two different, but both technically correct, methods of calculating storage capacity. 32GB translates to roughly 29.8GB a far as the software is concerned. As such, you've overestimated the storage used by the system files by over 2GB.

It is simply due to the fact that there are two different methods of measuring storage capacity. Hard drive manufacturers report a gigabyte as one billion bytes. Software, on the other hand, uses a binary system to measure capacity and reports 1,073,741,824 bytes as one gigabyte. As such, a completely empty 16GB drive is going to only show as roughly 14.8GB.

Its the same on every electronic as previous poster explained. My 32GB iPod touch has somewhere around 28GB available, 32GB Zune HD has around 28GB, 32GB micro SD card has some 28-29GB available, and we won't even mention how much is "missing" from my laptops 500GB HDD.

How's everyone is holding up with the Nexus 4's limited storage.

So this is my first Nexus and my first smartphone where I don't have expandable memory. While I love the phone I'm sure most people including myself wish there was at least a 32gb model. Regardless there's not no sense in beating a dead horse. Just curious on how everyone's making due and what are your solution to the problem. I currently use Dropbox for pics and spotify and Google Music for music. It's working okay so far but apps aren't small these days so they take up some space

no reason to keep backups on your phone at all. store them on your pc or backup drive. should something happen you can always push it to your phone, either manually via abd (push file /sdcard/) or nexus toolkit comfortably.
The space has not effected me very much at all. Compared to my 8 GB iPod Touch my 16 GB Nexus 4 is a luxury.

about 2gb free on the 8Gb version... I'll admit its a bit annoying at times, but overall not really an issue. The Google music, drive and box account for cloud storage basically take care of everything.
The saving grace is google music.. (did the hack to get it working in canada etc..) without that 8Gb would just not be enough at all.
4.2 gb
My last phone was a gs3 and I had a 32gb sd card in it. It being hooked up to sprint I personally couldn't rely I cloud services like I do now my service was that bad, and mind you I live in NY. having switched to A&tt is a lot better . I guess it just a little weird to look at my phone and only see 5gbs free.

16GB doesn't mean you actually get 16GB of storage there are always a couple taken up by the OS that you can't access. There's a reason for it that I just cant jog my memory to remember right now. It's the same with any type of storage, a 500 GB pc hard drive drive isn't 500 GB there's a small amount reserved that you can't access, there's a name for it I just can't remember what it is (boot partition?). Not sure if you can recover them using a custom ROM like CM or not as I am happy with stock android.
Well its called a boot partition on anything with an OS yes but an external hard drive and its space is down to the actual number of GBs. So 1gb is actually 1024 MBs so 2GB is actually 2048 MBs and so on.

Thanks for a reply but I don't think that's it in this case. I have the 8GB version and that should give me 5.7 usable. Look in the right top corner of my screenshot.
I've recovered about 400MB before that by moving a TWRP backup which somehow got placed in a word location. Can anyone install this app and tell me if they have a similar square of unrecognized space?

Anyone else connect their phone to a PC and have the internal storage say 9.51GB and not 16GB? Does the phone use up over 6GB for the OS and stock apps? What gives?

I show 9.62 available on mine. It is kind of odd, but they did add a TON of bloatware. Once we get root and can remove those apps, we should be able to recapture quite a bit back.

Yeah mine shows 9.62 total space and 8.48 available after installing my apps from previous phone, kinda sucks but at least there is an SD slot.
I was curious so I checked my old Sprint GNEX 32GB, it also has a chunk missing, about 7.5GB missing, so it is similar.
It would be nice if they listed the missing space as Reserved or System etc. instead of not showing it.
Yup guys 16GB total internal. The ROM and software has to sit somewhere on there. And AT&T has added so much crap to it I'm not surprised. But thats what the SD card slot is for yeah?
The stock apps seem to use up at least 1GB, plus any data they have.
Unsure about the system, but even the system for CyanogenMod 10.1 seemed to be around 600-800MB with all cache/data included. With TouchWIZ on these phones and all the extra bloat, it wouldn't surprise me if there were at least another gig in there.

Exactly. I heard the ROM file for the S4 was like 1.2 gigs or something like that. That's without cache and whatever else it needs to do.
I remember when I had the S3 the ROM file was like 800 megs for TW. And for AOSP it was like 250.
Even with a debloated rom its gonna be the same as the system partition is already set regardless of whats on it...just so you guys know of course it is posssiboe for a dev to tweak partition amounts...but they typically dont unless necessary

Hi,
It's a 4.2.2 "Feature"
It's for the greater good. New generation NAND smokes microSD performance, and you don't wanna bottleneck your device by multitasking from SD. On the other hand 16GB should be dropped entirely, we're talking very minimal cost difference for Samsung, so why not start at 32gigs or 64 and go all the way up to 256? This is HD era, nothing comes in small size.

That's the reason I'm waiting for the 32GB version.
I did the same with the Galaxy S III though I can't understand why they delay the release of the 32GB that much.. I'm pretty sure a lot of people are waiting for that one, right?
And btw, you can put your music on the µSD card, it's just the installed apps that are a problem.
Thanks, yeah you are right. Not sure though if some apps will be smart enough to route downloaded music to my SD card??
While we're at it: My problem is basically the "cloudsync" and more so the "DocumentSync" folder, the latter is > 6 GB large! Anyone knows what that is?

Swyped from another galaxy
Thanks, indeed. I deactivated all that cloud-syncing nonsense, which solved my problem for now. Now I have a few weeks or months until I have to think again what to do. :-/
Is "Swyped from another galaxy" that a joke on the Samsung Galaxy keyboard system? lol
You're probably looking at 24gb on the 32gb version so a bunch more memory.
Most people will in fact be fine with 9gb though, power users who download a lot of really inefficient apps that cache a lot of things and require a lot of storage should get the 32gb version. I personally will be fine with the 16gb version.
You may be right. I got 2.1 GB of apps for 151 apps, which averages out at 14 MB per app, while I had the feeling that most of my apps are less than 8 MB, oh well. -.-
I won't download any more apps though, but I am sure photographs and stuff will quickly snatch up the remaining 5 GB of space that I freed now...
Will try to find a setting to put my photos on the SD card by default. Any tips (or links to a thread / tutorial about that) are appreciated.

Yeah i am also waiting for the 32GB version because of the same reason.
my htc one s 16gb has 2gb dedicated to apps. for me plenty atm. that's independent of the 9.93 internal sdcard, don't know if s4 is same. however, as mentioned, 16gb phones are too small now days and i won't pay for the s4 till it gets 32gb on att and black--
also don't think i can post links to other forums per xda. but if you google "att 32gb s4", there is a link to an att forum specifically for the 32gb release and an active att moderator--just fyi

First of all.. If u want to store ur camera photos on sd card use camera zoom fx.. It's a very good camera app and there u can choose where to store the photos
The second.. U have 8,8 gb on stock firmware if u install a custom rom in a few weeks it will be more free space because of some bloatware installed on the stock and files we dont need i think.. Let the dev's do there great job

Will try to find a setting to put my photos on the SD card by default. Any tips (or links to a thread / tutorial about that) are appreciated.

For photos there's a setting in the camera app which let's you select which storage to use. If it's not there use a file explorer to copy your photos across to your sd card.
