Ordered Imito MX2 - advice please for xbmc, firmware, keyboard please advise... - Android Stick & Console RockChip based Computers

hey guys
i have ordered an imito mx2 which i should have in a week. i think this was the best device for its value. i hope i am right
once i have the stick, have you got any tips on what i should do? in regards to rooting it? what will this allow (install google apps without playstore etc) it has jellybean 4.1.1 can i update this to latest jelly bean, or doesnt it work like that?
the imito stick has bluetooth
which bluetooth keyboard would you reccomend or is it better getting a wireless keyboard which uses the usb port...? i want a good sized keyboard thats easy to use as i will be using the device to browse web etc
i hope you can help
thanks

You don't need to be rooted to install apps outside of the play store. Just check on install apps from unknown sources in settings. I have the mx2 I think it is great but sometimes it lags especially when downloading something. I bought the rc11 air mouse and it is good but I wish I would of got one with a built in touchpad for easier scrolling and gestures.

I would get the k400, I've got it and I like it. YouTube is fullscreen, I haven't done any streaming so I can't help you there. Just google mx1 root it works for the mx2 as well make sure to run the programs as administrator.

I have an MK808 and a RC11 Air Mouse. The air mouse works awesome like a wiimote. The keyboard is awesome except it will drop a character occasionally. I don't plan on writing a paper on it but simple searches and logins is great.
The RC11 is a better mouse (IMO) and the K400 is a better keyboard. You can buy the keyboard locally but the RC11 needs to be ordered online.

WIndows desktop theme
I have a imito mx2 I just got, its rooted and a new rom is in place. I am using it as my main computer now and im looking for a windows 7 desktop theme to place on it. I have come across many windows 7 phone themes and various other ones that are close but nothing like what I'm looking for. Is there someone how has created one. I would try to make one myself but to do a full theme like windows 7 desktop is out of my experience range. I would love to hear your feed back.

I think your windows 7 themed Android unit will somehow create a blackhole in the universe and destroy all life as we know it.... why risk it?
These devices don't support CM10 themes. I'm unsure if the CM10 Rom even had theme support in it. Your best bet is to load a custom launcher and themed.

Hey guys, a new tab 10.1 owner here

Hey guys,
I thought I'd drop by and say hi to everyone, you'll be seeing me here more often - just picked up my Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G from the store - totally loving it. I used to own the Galaxy Tab 7" previously, I sold that for this.
Still snooping around, initial impressions are great !
Any recommendations or any particular threads or apps that I must see to love my tab more? just drop the links here I'll check 'em out.
Once again, Great to know you'll
Cheers
Jackie
here's a tip for you;
When I got my 10.1 (day after launch) I was at first disappointed at the "lack of apps" for it but that disappointment was unfounded BECAUSE, I should NOT look for tablet specific apps which is unimportant....just look for apps because they don't have to be "tablet specific" to work, work well and look great on your device.
I now have more apps than I have space (16GB)
enjoy your 10.1
Thanks a lot Jon,
To be honest, I've been lurking around in this forum for quite some time now, I've understood that most apps are actually optimized for honeycomb just that they don't mention it !
Lack of apps is of least concerns to me, apps for honeycomb keep growing, I also feel they'll be loads of new apps in the coming months !
Thanks a lot for the warm welcome !
Cheers

Welcome. There are many apps out, but these are some of my favorites.
Thumb Keyboard. Makes typing a breeze. I also like the new text shortcuts button. Great for entering common words and phrases.
ADW Launcher EX. Faster than the Honeycomb Launcher. I really like the bottom dock as well.
Screen Off and Lock. I have it on the bottom dock of my home screen. Don't have to use the power button all the time.

are there any apps that are wanted?
i'm a developer who recently got a 10.1 and would like to know what kind of apps there are demand for for honeycomb optimization
Would love, love, love a sports live scores app. Especially baseball. Right now the only ones out there are phone versions which only work in portrait mode and the text is teeny tiny. Can't wait for MLB At Bat to get tablet-ized (hoping it does anyway!). The only tablet version apps I really miss are some of the biggies like Yelp and TripAdvisor.
Welcome. I will second the thumb keyboard (life saver) and the adw ex launcher. Many forums here will help you set it up.
I would also like to suggest the following.
Multipicture Live Wallpaper- honeycomb crops wallpaper horribly, this fixes that and you can have more than one wallpaper.
Some good Widgets are wizz widgets, android pro widgets, HD Widgets, desktop vizualizer, folder organizer lite, and minimilistic text (although have fun- I needed you tube videos for this one.
As for apps I like- pulse for greader, xda premium, dropbox, folder organizer hd, Pandora, tune in radio and Netflix. (Which you have to side load-again other forums for those directions)
Have fun with it and kiss time goodbye due to customizing.

As far as games go, I am addicted to the labyrinth games. My fave is Atilt 3D Labyrinth (by Fridgecat). There is a free version for it. Also, there is a similar game called Labyrinth (by Illusion Labs) and a free version called Labyrinth lite.

Great - I love games, I'll check them out - thanks
P.S. Should I root my tablet now? any particular plus point in doing so - I am quite familiar with rooting, all my other Android devices are rooted. Just curious how it helps in Honeycomb.
Root would be good for using a ps3 controller for MAME / Genesis / Snes roms (which mostly work like a dream - check out jrioni arcade and gensoid etc.) I haven't done this yet but its getting more and more tempting.
Re ADW: does it run as fast as touchwiz? I was put off by reviews saying it was laggy... cheers
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Adw ex runs on top of touchwiz. You don't get rid of touchwiz. Its as simple as an app. You don't like it, uninstall it. I believe all the launchers have a lite version so you can check it out to see if you like it. Mostly you pay so you can resize Widgets and icons and download themes. Adw ex and launcher pro are the two that I have tried, Alot less lag, almost none at all. Wish Google would try one out so they could improve stock.

Webtop + CM7

hey guys,
I haven't been around our forums much lately so I figured I'd just ask after not having much luck with the search.
is it working yet via webtop2sd and some neat tricks? is it a priority in CM7 development? I picked up a lapdock considering the price range is finally where it should be so I'm preparing to finally setup my system for real with a fully customized webtop experience.
any info is much appreciated
Nope.
(10 char)
D= not even a priority in development? I guess I have to give up all my cool cm7 functions
I know this topic has been beat down to a pulp but I had a thought about this too since I picked up my laptop dock. To me the actual laptop dock is pretty useless, in my opinion. All it was good for was just web browsing. But since hacking the webtop2sd, having a mini linux netbook has really kept me on blur roms for that reason and I keep my pc laptop at work now.
That being said, would it be possible to run just linux off the ext-sd card or even through one of the usb ports on the laptop dock and still run cm7 or miui?
Landscape hdmi mirroring is in the works, so it's a possibility that the lapdock can be used with cm7. As for actual webtop, it's still a very small chance that non blur roms will see it.

that actually sounds like it would be more useful that a webtop install. and probably run faster. i really just want gedit + firefox for coding webpages. i couldn't imaging trying to design a web site using a virtual keyboard. some key combo like alt + tab to show recent tasks would make it pretty usable

new to android, need some apps, any recommendations?

hey, just got a nexus 4, i need 3 particualr apps, anyone recommend some good ones?
1) a note taking program, i've been using the default ios notes on my ipod touch 4g and it's sweet. need something sweet and simple like it, not overly complicated.
2) need a voice memo program, again similar to the default ios voice memos.
3) need a music player that will let me skip or go to previous track by pressing and holding the volume buttons. on ios, i did this with activator and so i need something similar. i don't want to take out my phone on the subway everytime i want to skip or repeat a track
edit: 4) actually i have another question, is there any thing like spotlight search for android? on IOS, the OS indexes everything and so when you scroll all the way left, you just type in the name of the the thing you want to search and it'll show up in music, or movies or whatever. it's very useful. i know google's default search does this, but anything better?
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!

a lot of people like catch notes. but i use an app called freenote. its a normal note deal. but it also lets you use a stylus to write whatever you want. and then it shrinks it down and sticks it in a line. it works flawlessly. better on a n7 or n10 though.
as far as voice recorder, there are tons of them in the play store.
if you root and install aokp. you get the features you are wanting for music built into the rom.
Try power amp it supports headphone controls and is the best overall music player I've ever used it has a great ui and lock screen widget
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
for note taking i recommend colornote. Works well for me.
For voice memo either you can use default voice recorder or use evernote for above and this purpose.
For music there are plenty of apps available. Try them out.
I am sure you will find lots of stuff better compare to iOS.
I know you didnt ask for this but I recommend cerberus. Its like the find my iPhone App. Its great incase you loose it

because i came from IOS? and i love some of the features of it? when you love some features or some apps, you're always going to try to find something similar. human nature. and like someone stated, i'm in the transitioning process.
For note taking, try SpringPad, Evernote, and Catch Notes, then pick your preference. They all have voice memos and back up your information to the cloud so you can access them from a PC, too. I used to use Color Note on my old phones, but moved on for the cloud storage and the better UI of the above mentioned.

its better to have the functionality built in and fast than it is to add apps to do these things and eventually slow down the phone. its also nice to be able to customize the entire experience. from quick settings all the way down to the on-screen buttons. and if you stick nova (launcher in play store) on there... you get full customization of everything in between. along with uber speedy transitions and animations. without slowing down the os.
your phone is made to dev on. it is near impossible to brick. use it for what it is made for and i promise you will enjoy the ride.
spotlight (universal search) is patented. so android cannot do that.

Building New ROM. Post your Requests

Hi there
I am thinking of making a new Rom for Nexus 7 2013 WIFI (flo) and I would like to see what I can do for you. However, I am doing a little survey before I start developing the Rom. Kindly tell me what do you need in a ROM.
The rom will be build from source of 4.3 most probably but it's not set to stone yet. I might start working when 4.4 comes for our device.
Do you want to see specific softwares or specific modification or anything ?
Things like prerooted, custom boot animations, some softwares?
If I can do that, I will happy to do that for you all.
What do you like to see in the ROM, write your requests!
UPDATE :
Currently working on Xperia L, SP & Galaxy star so this project may be delayed till 4.4 is released
One think I like is that it's already rooted.

Unofficial Carbon with Tablet UI, Carbon has so many customizing features, however, what are you aiming for? swiss knife full-featured ROM or a slim stock-like ROM?
I really love halo and piecontrol to use full-screen all the time.
I would like a real multitasking like split the screen in half for example, with 2 different apps running.
I would also like a fully translated rom (in French) because ppl who develops roms usually forget about other languages than English for their new menu entries for example.
I'd also advise you to keep the stock bootanimation, Devs like to change it for a custom name, but it usually is not as good as stock (like PA, which I love, but hated the bootanimation).
Prerooted is always welcome.
I would also like a way to use different languages for voice recognition (not at the same time but easily changeable). I use French as much as English and it pisses me off that I can only use one voice recognition language.
An aosp browser of course.
Get rid of native apps other than gplay and Google search and maps, such as music, books,...
USB connection other than MTP would be nice for Linux users.
Stickymount like option built-in for USB keys, hard drives,...
An "advanced options" menu with startup apps & services, voltage control.
Maybe a modified gplay that can reach freedroid repos.
Built-in adblock plus to get rid of the annoying persistent notification (under "advanced options" maybe?)
That's rather an app but... A keyboard with advanced soft keys like ctrl-c ctrl-v and many others.
As many gpl licensed codes as possible (ideologically important for me)
... That's all I can think of right now

Just one: audio over USB. This is the only thing tying me to CM and their CAF. If only someone would show me how to port their USB portion I would jump ship to AOSP immediately.

I'd like to see something completely different. Every single ROM is AOSP plus this feature or that feature. I was excited for Multi-ROM for this device so I could try some new ROMs but they're all exactly the same plus or minus a few features. I find myself returning to stock 4.3 every time.

Maybe two versions. One with just needed features while the otherone with loads of them. I am not sure how much time it will take me. I have already ordered a new hard disk as it will take loads of space!
I'm easy.
I just like Center Clock. Theme Support. Navigation bar Height. Transparency.
The Status Bar Data Speed is handy.

App recommendations?

Hi All,
Many of you are coming from the likes of the Note 2 (or even the original Note) but I'm sure there's plenty like me that are new to the phablet scene and definitely new to the S-Pen scene. So it seems appropriate to start a thread asking people - what apps do you recommend to use with your shiny new device? Going beyond the usual recommended android apps, what ones do you feel really make use of the Note's features (such as the pen, or the massive screen or whatever).
Please, suggest away!
handy note and handy scanner dude
I would of said sketchbook, however they have nicely included that with the device now! It's a brilliant app for getting your artist on!
I'd also suggest emulators for games as the big screen is certainly easier than the smaller devices out there! Drastic DS emulator has arrived on the play store recently.. It's abut £5 but imo worth its price tag, it allows you to play Nintendo DS games (Roms) really fluid and of course with the s-pen!! ! If you was a fan of the old Zelda games etc this gives you a change to play catch ups wit the latest outings of Link.
Netflix
SwiftKey - Brilliant keyboard replacement that I feel that corrects a lot more reliable than stock.
Spotify - Free 48 Hour trial of millions of music tracks (You can keep creating a trial account, in theory not actually pay.. But you'll end up in love with your play list you've mashed together and just pay the sub (what happened to me).
Go Sms pro - again a nicer more configurable Sms /mms replacement of stock app. Also includes a go Sms to go Sms feature where you can send pics, doodles, recordings, videos to anyone with gosms installed for free.
If you live in the UK *** 0800 wizard. Allows you to dial 0800/0844 numbers using your network minutes.
Order and chaos - MMO game, works really well with the big screen and adreno 330... Similar to world of war craft.
Es file Explorer - allows you to browse the memory on your phone/SD card memory a lot easier.
Be great if people added their favourite apps into this thread... Nothing beats a good app download session
