Building New ROM. Post your Requests - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Hi there
I am thinking of making a new Rom for Nexus 7 2013 WIFI (flo) and I would like to see what I can do for you. However, I am doing a little survey before I start developing the Rom. Kindly tell me what do you need in a ROM.
The rom will be build from source of 4.3 most probably but it's not set to stone yet. I might start working when 4.4 comes for our device.
Do you want to see specific softwares or specific modification or anything ?
Things like prerooted, custom boot animations, some softwares?
If I can do that, I will happy to do that for you all.
What do you like to see in the ROM, write your requests!
UPDATE :
Currently working on Xperia L, SP & Galaxy star so this project may be delayed till 4.4 is released

One think I like is that it's already rooted.

Unofficial Carbon with Tablet UI, Carbon has so many customizing features, however, what are you aiming for? swiss knife full-featured ROM or a slim stock-like ROM?

I really love halo and piecontrol to use full-screen all the time.
I would like a real multitasking like split the screen in half for example, with 2 different apps running.
I would also like a fully translated rom (in French) because ppl who develops roms usually forget about other languages than English for their new menu entries for example.
I'd also advise you to keep the stock bootanimation, Devs like to change it for a custom name, but it usually is not as good as stock (like PA, which I love, but hated the bootanimation).
Prerooted is always welcome.
I would also like a way to use different languages for voice recognition (not at the same time but easily changeable). I use French as much as English and it pisses me off that I can only use one voice recognition language.
An aosp browser of course.
Get rid of native apps other than gplay and Google search and maps, such as music, books,...
USB connection other than MTP would be nice for Linux users.
Stickymount like option built-in for USB keys, hard drives,...
An "advanced options" menu with startup apps & services, voltage control.
Maybe a modified gplay that can reach freedroid repos.
Built-in adblock plus to get rid of the annoying persistent notification (under "advanced options" maybe?)
That's rather an app but... A keyboard with advanced soft keys like ctrl-c ctrl-v and many others.
As many gpl licensed codes as possible (ideologically important for me)
... That's all I can think of right now

Just one: audio over USB. This is the only thing tying me to CM and their CAF. If only someone would show me how to port their USB portion I would jump ship to AOSP immediately.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

I'd like to see something completely different. Every single ROM is AOSP plus this feature or that feature. I was excited for Multi-ROM for this device so I could try some new ROMs but they're all exactly the same plus or minus a few features. I find myself returning to stock 4.3 every time.

Noted down. Now I am looking at suggestions and out of all those, what is possible for me. I will update you all after looking at each one in detail.
Maybe two versions. One with just needed features while the otherone with loads of them. I am not sure how much time it will take me. I have already ordered a new hard disk as it will take loads of space!

I'm easy.
I just like Center Clock. Theme Support. Navigation bar Height. Transparency.
The Status Bar Data Speed is handy.

Why install Cyanogenmod?

Okey, so Cyanogenmod is coming to our wonderful TF and people are hyping about this. I'm just wondering why. So we get an equalizer and themes support, hoopla. And we're minus the Polaris Office which Asus provides as a free extra, which is a long and big minus.
So why install it?
(I'm not a troll, I'm just curious because don't see any reason for all the hype.)
Cyanogenmod is 100% open source. Once Cyanogenmod has a working TF101 build that means that others can build on top of it, and when Asus drops support we can use the cyanogenmod made code to keep our devices up to date. CM roms are also feature rich and offer constant updates. If you're willing to give up (or just pay for) Polaris then you'll see how much smoother AOSP roms are.
Polaris Office. recovery installable .zip is in Tjemes and apps section, its extracted from main ics build.

This question interest me too.
Is someone able to be a bit more specific about what a 'feature rich' CM9 brings beyond what the stock ROM has?
And what do we lose functionally besides the applications Asus has added?
A list of important differences would be very informative.
CM9 includes an entire list of performance tweaks and options such as reboot to recovery, my CM9 on my phone also uses the volume keys when screen is off to skip tracks without having to wake the device and press a button on the screen..just for a small example.

Several music apps do the same with vol keys
Also reboot options are gonna be added to modified stock at some point just like in honeycomb
I like the stock notification area and settings to i think cm9 should have something similar
I love cyanogenmod use it on my phone all the time its quick and awesome but at the moment i dont see the reason to switch yet on the tf

i should say, im fairly eager as well to try out CM, but as far as i understand, its not as mature as the stock OS itself. ive read poor support for the camera, wifi and bluetooth, which in its own right is a CM-killer for me. but perhaps that is not the case now?
i love being in control of my phone/tablet and that's why i want to get away from stock roms that are always trying to unroot and lock the phone or tablet, that is not the meaning of open source and Android to me.
anyhow, id love someone knowledgeable on CM to debunk the issues with camera, wifi and bluetooth. id love to know what to expect in terms of stability, play store support and such, so that we could all have a clear understanding of what CM is and what it can do, how it differs, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Im hoping the lack of official support has been due to cm getting new build machines, cm said they,ll be up and running in a few days

Responsive, boot up time is quicker more customization's. For example taking away the names under the apps so its just the app itself.. if we had a built in LED set the LED blink frequency time or intervals and some even change its color and assign it to email, battery ect. Battery life is way long but its very quick. Bounce back affect when you hit the sides,Glow, change window transitions, like have the homescreen change in card stack form, flip, boxed, fade, spin ect or just have a constant home screen switching (no end) just starts over. Change the weight of the transition from light to heavy so it feels like light as a feather or heavy when switching screens. Erasing the Google search bar , change how notifications behave. Change the sound pitch. Hide status bar or the dock screen so its just your wallpaper and apps.. assign swipe animations like sliding your finger up or down you can make the status bar appear or dock dispel. Different lock screens, lock screen gestures.Make the static wallpaper not move with transitions (which gives a speedy feel to everything). Force Live wallpapers to not move with each screen swipe.. it feels like its more stable and less stuttering when using a LWP.That's just a quick list off the top of my head. Plus alot of changes under the hood. They also support theme's depending on the launcher they include.
You can get most of this separate by getting another launcher but its not built into the package. Its not bonded to your transformer. With CM its all there ready to use. Its done very subtle that it looks like it meant for it since its a tweaked version of the ones you can get in the Market. Some people dont like CM since its not as flashy. That's why most get a CM based ROM with added stuff. I love the CM9.. Right now there on there 2nd nightly build. I would wait till they announce an RC version or stable. Currently, dock support is glitchy and its missing features since its there 2nd nightly build. Nighties are like Beta builds. Not a daily driver..

Development on CM9, Megatron (CM9 based) and AOKP are all done more real time and ongoing than anything from Asus. They provide better stability, can be developed to accept the Asus stock apps, and introduce new features to your tablet. Nearly all of the added features can be purchased apps instead of integrated for free though. I'd rather donate to one dev doing awesome things than have 1000 apps from different mediocre devs. It's less work for you to optimize and get every ounce of ability out of your tablet. Even with the 201, 101 and 300 all being out and pretty much awesome still even through the first two are "aging", we still get better attention. Maybe not all those thoughts go together.
In my opinion though, my tablet runs smoother on Megatron than it did stock. I have Guevor and Ricardopv working hard from each end supporting this tablet in a way that Asus isn't. I use Kingsoft Office Suite (free and full-functioning) with cloud support for office needs. I play my games, Facebook, Twitter and anything else I can think of pretty much with this thing and don't have to worry about the random reboots at all.
To each their own though. If you don't think you need it, that's cool. I probably didn't need it. I wanted it though. When CM hits a device, even AOKP now, it brings out developers that will usually support a device until it is truly dead. Support a dev and try their wares. Donate.

[Discussion] Wishlist for upcoming CM10 / AOSP Rom(s)

CM10 / AOSP Rom Wishlist
We all know CM just recently announce CM10 will be coming just around the corner, so what will we be expecting?
All the Android 4.1 JellyBean goodies of course!
Still, there's a couple more things couldn't be added to enhance the stock android experience.
NOTE
Would like to clarify something before you start posting, CM10 will run as pure android 4.1 user experience with other enhancement make the phone more customizable. As it runs on AOSP framework, there will be strictly no TOUCHwiZ, NO SENSe, NO OTHER NONSENSE related request in this thread, just pure android.
As none dev, you should only bug report, request CM10/Trebuche launcher related features, anything beyond that you'll be on your own! (Either develop a ROM base of CM10 source with the features you've wanted YOURSELF, or FIND OTHER ROMS that suites your taste, no reason to rage and flame in this thread)
Special Note:
To new Android users particularly coming from iOS: It's understandable coming from iOS to Android is a huge change between two different OS, it's also understandable that you're not used to DIY stuff like rooting your own phone, reading simple instruction and the known issue;mainly because you're too used to getting spoon fed back in iOS.This leads to asking dumb question, flaming in the particular thread, harassing at developers who practically offer their ROM for free! Long story short, LEARN TO READ! Make use of the search tool bar, trust me when I say it's useful. I was the same when back then, tho I had a lil' experience coming from symbian s60v3 &v5 development, DailyMobile forum.
Hope CM10 project related personals read this. Let's thanks them in advance for their hardwork!
I'll go first,
I've read a couple post in XDA and was hinted that Chrome for Android will not be the default browser for Android 4.1 JellyBean as Chrome for Android will only be available as default browser for Nexus 7, not part of Android 4.1 update (kind of misleading there).
So here's my request:
-Make Chrome for Android as CM10 default browser.
Tablet UI!!!
Just like paranoid AOSP rom, or was it AOKP.
Tablet ui kind of homescreen will definitely look amazing on SGSIII 4.7inch HD screen!
Trebuchet: swipe down to open notifications. Helps for big screens.

Trebuchet: add the possibility to select random transition effect
Trebuchet: icons and widgets automatically rearrange when adding new icons or widgets like stock jb launcher

As Google mentionned, it'll be part of Google Apps. If not, then it won't be the default browser as we can't pack proprietary apps in the ROM.

Obviously Trebuchet will be rebased on Jelly Bean's launcher code.
What I would like to see is:
- ability to set ascending incoming call ringtone volume
- ability to set peak and off peak hours for Exchange mail

Ability to check notifications when in a full-screen app, a nicer camera app (perhaps a UI overhaul to make the viewfinder bigger).
Smaller dial pad to allow more than 1 contact prediction. The dial pad takes 80% real estate but used 20% of the time.
If I can get maybe 5 predictions I'll have the correct prediction in far fewer touches.

One thing that annoys me:
I've got some contacts with more than one Phone Number, and when using T9 in the Dialer, I'm nearly always calling the wrong number of these contacts. I would love to see an option to either choose every time which number to call, or an option to always automatically call the most frequent number.
I know I could also store two contacts for these to numbers, but that's so 1990-like
A new camera app with transparent interface. The AOSP camera is horrible and it's the number 1 reason people don't use AOSP. Most people just flash CM, like it, then fire up the camera, and return to stock ROM.
Please don't say we can't change AOSP apps, if Apollo music player can replace the AOSP one, certainly a better camera app can be integrated to CM.

Apollo: in my opinion would be great to have the possibility to sort by album but not basing on single folder but on mp3 info.
For example if I have an album with more CD and I have a folder for each CD, apollo lists different album with the same name and in my opinion is ugly, basing on mp3 info I would get a single album with all the song.
Or better to have the possibility to select between these possibility.
I see this feature in only few player such as poweramp.
Pinch to zoom for web browsing just like in CM7 please!
Ability to hide the on-screen navigation buttons and utilise the hardware/capacitive buttons instead. Maximise screen space.
On-screen buttons suck!

- scrollable dock
- hide apps in app drawer

CyanogenMod Questions.

Hi there,
I have been stumbling across some awesome CM10 themes and it's something I'd like to have although they are only for CM9 and CM10. I'm currently running rooted stock nexus 4, whats the benefits of having a rom like CM10 - does CM10 run 4.2.1? which is what im currently using?
Whats are the positives and negatives to switching?
If i switch, can I convert BACK to stock?
1. Use the search feature. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=35521539
2. CM10 = Android 4.1.X....... does not support Android 4.2.X and does not support N4 (mako)
3. first link. no negatives. its like reformatting your computer. If you go to Windows 8 and don't like it, go back to Windows 7.. what are the negatives? none. just reinstall apps... use titanium backup to backup/restore apps (buy pro version)
4. Yes you can revert back to stock. Nothing is permanent on android.
......... next time, do some research before just straight up asking these questions as they are already answered.

a big positive with AOKP is the ability to add in and customize the on screen nav bar buttons. i came from a gs2. so setting this phone to have the same layout as my gs2 capacitive buttons is a real winner. you can also rearrange the order of and how many toggles there are in the quick settings drop down. there is a whole list of features that you get and the devving has only just begun.

CM10.1 (Jellybro) already has Navigation Bar changes. It's better off getting used to those three buttons IMO, menu is useless for me. I prefer having it as a touch button somewhere on the app. If not then I'll use the bottom right one.
You can arrange toggles on quick settings drop down as well on CM10.1.
CM10.1 is a ongoing project and is developing really fast without dirty hacks that AOKP does. Very clean code.

Pull down notifications -> Tiles -> Settings. Guess I got accustomed to it on my Galaxy Nexus where there wasn't a tile button. It was just pull down notifications -> settings. It takes some time getting used to it, but it's pretty good imo. But that's the best part about android you can do it the way you like it, traditionally or the new way
I used to like AOKP but felt it was too bloated with unnecessary crap like AOKP Wallpapers (Swagpapers), unnecessary unicorn stuff etc. I prefer CM as its cleaner code and more optimal whereas AOKP does things in 'hackish' code and just like what the name implies, it's kanged from CM sources anyway.

haha yeah i was annoyed of keep having to remove AOKPClock, SwagPapers, Swag Toggle like wth... unnecessary line of code. i do love the amount of customization in there though. i used xylon on my galaxy nexus before i got my N4 (it started coming to rise at 4.2.X) its pretty customizable as well, very feature rich.
does AOKP have navigation height / width adjustments in the ROM already? i miss that feature, CM has everything I want as of right now. only missing nav height changes. can't wait for PGM for N4 though http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bZEodCnYv58#t=14s is a brief video of what it is. i love it because i dont have to use the buttons

edit. that is pretty cool. does that also mean the phone never sleeps? and i dunno how you managed to get that video to load at 14s. but you the man for doing it.

Ah I don't need arrows, I actually prefer them to be normal size. AOKP probably has this feature already, CM has a feature in which if you are on a entry field (typing) you can use volume keys.. up and down to move left and right of your words if you choose to (can be disabled).
the phone does sleep, it's built into a kernel module and uses very minimal battery life. I've used it since I saw it on the GN apps forum. if you use light flow, it probably uses the same amount of battery (or less). lightflow barely interferes with the phone's battery life.
oh that's easy.. just go to any youtube video and right click the video and click "Copy current url at current time" I figured I would save you some time and get to the point

Don't try using it on N4. Not supported yet. Will most likely cause problems if you try it.

Asking people for their opinions is different to research. I would have to search soo many cm posts to find opinions or I could ask. This forum is q and a so please stop.

Resize nav buttons?

Any custom rom that can re-size the navigation buttons, so we can have more screen?
I want to keep them in the same place but make them smaller. They take up to much of the sceen.
search dev forums and if they have it, they'll say it under the list of the many features

Codefire x does it as well and I think Paranoid Android too in tablet mode.

I have tweaked the necessary files so you can update the stock ROM with a thinner nav bar, however you need a rooted device and unlocked boot loader, so you might as well go the full custom ROM which will give you more options over the nav bar, such as choosing your own size.

Phil

Hey Phil, how did you go about making your nav bar thinner? I want to stick to stock and am just adding small mods and the thickness of the nav bar really gets to me.
Liquidsmooth has nav bar resizing.
PA has navbar sizing, you can scale it down to zero if you want
tablet UI (statusbar and navbar are one) +phablet +per app dpi and UI control overall
expanded desktop
and expanded desktop on per app basis where is basically shifts into that mode for apps you define that way

What is PA? Do you have to be rooted to use it? Thanks.

It's a custom ROM, and you have to be rooted to install any custom ROM.
I highly recommend PA over other custom ROMs. I just recently decided to see the status of CM10.1 and immediately restored my backup of PA. There are some nice things about other ROMs (AOKP retains the old 2.x behavior of selecting which app to launch such that you don't have to make 2 presses to open with an app only once), but all of them are pretty early in their development. PA can be modified the same way the other ROMs can, but the underlying ability to select both the dpi and layout of an app is invaluable.
I'm stuck with PA, and glad for it!
I'd throw my hat in for AOKP, it's got more customisation than any of the other ROM's and to be fair is now on milestone stable releases.
It depends on what you call customization. Apps are where you hopefully spend 95% of your time using your device, they are what makes your phone worthwhile. Curiously here you have virtually zero customization although the potential is the largest that android has to offer. Buttons and tweaks pale if you could see what's hidden in your everyday apps, if you have a way to tap into it that is.
ps. here's an example
this is how a normal rom uses the screen: http://www.abload.de/img/2013-01-04-15.02g2z5f.jpg
this is how pa can use the screen (and the hidden capabilities in any app): http://www.abload.de/img/n4-product-heroe5z5z.jpg
pa does that optionally. you can switch between UI's app per app. also tab-UI is optional and separate. you could run gtalk like that in any interface UI.
now literally hundreds of apps can do that, pretty much all google apps, tons of apps coming out everyday making good use of the screen now where nexus7 and 10 have established a market for bigger displays.

What ROMs include pie WITH the last app button

I'm trying to figure out which ROMs have it so I can try them out and see which one of them I like best. Thanks in advance

Install LMT launcher and you will even have it with the stock or any other rom (root required). Available here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150.
if you want to see pie grow use pa, this is where it comes from anyway and this is where it gets better almost daily. rootbox is developing it as well in their own way, which is cool.
lmt on the other hand is almost a carbon copy, but lacks function where it matters and lacks badly. even bringing it up is silly - on the nexus plattform, where almost all rom have pie because its open source. except cm.
why'd anyone wanna make do with a hack. you know, you dont have to see android progressing, but getting the newest and seeing ideas take shape and form is so much more fun than taking substitutes. thats why we're on nexus, no?

Well put, thanks for your hard work but I was under the impression that pie on paranoid didn't have the last app button or am I mistaken?

Not all rooted users choose to install a custom rom, for those users LMT is a nice solution PA offering Pie control is a well known fact i presume.

By that I assume you mean multitasking right? Then yes, yes it does. If it's not enabled by default (which I'm pretty sure it is) then it'll almost certainly be somewhere in the settings.

Not the recents button, there's actually a button which switches between the app your on and the last app you were on. Think of like the alt+tab shortcut on windows. Where you switch between two apps back and forth. I know AOKP does it but they don't have pie. Carbon and xylon both seem to have it with pie implemented, I was wondering what other ROMs have it. I've attached a picture of xylon with the last app being the one furthest to the right

Ah my bad sorry. In that case, unfortunately I think not.
Try rootbox, the latest nightly runs great on this device and has a lot of customizing options for pie control.

Personally I use paranoid android and the only reason is that I like the extended desktop feature which hides the soft keys and whenever you need it you just swipe from the bottom and you get pie

OP, I THINK E.L.E. has the last app button.
+1 for RootBox.
