Spoof Phone on T-Mobile website - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I edit build.prop will it change the phone reported on T-Mobile's website?
If so, what are the non market related adverse effects of this edit? I wanna spoof MT4GS, thanks.

You can simply choose 'not my phone' and pick any phone you want. What are you trying to accomplish?

If you do this they'll reping and get the correct phone model. I don't just want the MT4GS to DISPLAY, I want T-Mobile to think I'm actually using it.
I bought the N4 from Google Play and I kind of don't want them to know I have it.

You kinda can't since T-Mobile just gets that information from your IMEI which is hardcoded in your phone. Each time you make a phone call or connect to the network in anyway your IMEI is sent (along with your SIM IMSI) to authenticate you to the network.
As such they've made tampering with IMEIs illegal as well

I bought my N$ from Google Play, should my IMEI even register?
I've been using it for about a day and the phone hasn't changed on the site yet, I may be in luck.

I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking this so I'll go ahead and say it.
This thread makes no sense. Why don't you want t mobile to know what phone you use?
You can't spoof another phone unless you change the imei which isn't legal. Editing the build.prop will probably only cause issues with the play store.

Seriously? Why does it matter if T-Mobile knows what kind of phone you have?
And T-Mobile sells the N4. It doesn't matter where you bought it, they know what the IMEI pulls up as.

I too would like to know why it matters what phone they think you have.
At&t knows I'm using an N4 based on the IMEI, and they don't sell it, so unless you're willing to possibly destroy your phone/spend some time in jail, I would just forget about it.

I don't understand this thread either, I was literally in my local T-Mobile store not more than an hour ago, told the rep I was purchasing an N4 from Google (its 200$ cheaper than t-mo wants for month-to-month contract price) and he gave me instructions on how to activate it with their monthly 4g plan. why would they care where you got it?

First of all, slow down....second, this thread makes a ton of sense.
My other phone is EOL and I want to cash it in for a new one with my insurance. In order to do that the old one must report be reported to T-Mobile before I drop it and it smashed to pieces. Thanks for being a jerk about it.

Haha that is awesome. How does a thread, to regular law abiding folks, make "tons of sense" if the thread itself is a scheme to commit fraud? Damn, how could we not have thought of that?
Like the other poster said, this is the best thing I've read all week.

It was just a joke, the phone is actually damaged (cracked screen and kb double presses buttons) this is why I got the N4.
When I called Asurion they told me they no longer carry the phone and tried to give me a G2 (which I already own), I then got some documents in the mail showing that the N4 is now in my device bracket, so I want to raise hell and trade it in.
...and even if I did want to commit fraud it's no ones business but mine. What is this? The moral police forum? Why is everyone sweating the details instead of helping me with my inquiry? This is the most hostile (though it IS at a minimum) group of posts I've encountered since 2007! lol

But seriously, stop being prudes guys... -_-

Your not going to be able to trick t mobile into thinking your phone is anything other than what it is. If your intent is to swap out an older phone through insurance your going to have to actually use the phone you want to claim so that t mobile can inform assurion or whoever of when the phone was last used. Your device sends a lot of info to its carrier every time you use it and editing a build.prop or whatever will not change that.

Not that I agree with what you are doing, but how was anybody supposed to come to this conclusion based on what you submitted in the OP?
Secondly, whether you have a secondary phone or not (N4) has absolutely no bearing on your ability to file for insurance for. Especially considering you purchased the phone at full value without a contract from a non-carrier vendor.

Having a secondary phone does not matter but when making a claim on the insured device they have to be able to verify that the damage occured within the last 30 days. If the phone has not been used in over 30 days they can deny the claim.

Purposely brick a DX

Ok guys, weird question...my screen is totally scratched up, no idea how it happened, but I am really pissed off about it. Anyway, I have the best buy extra insurance (Black tie?). I want to brick my DX so they can give me a new one. ****ed up I know, but I am paying for it, so I might as well take advantage. How do i do, or what is the best way to make it irrecoverable?
If you bought the accidental plan, just drop in in a puddle. I told them i was gonna hack it when i bought it and they said no problem but if anything happens and I have to bring it in, I better make sure it doesnt power on at all.
Best solution, pop it in the microwave for a couple seconds. It will nit power on after that.

Hes turning in the phone, so they are able to repair it and give it to the next person that breaks their phone. This saves us cost, because the other alternative is him reporting it lost and just keeping it.
You could always do the OTA then sbf 2.1. done brick. and you dont have to break anything, and now best buy and asurion will lower our insurance costs! jk

No, the alternative is to just live with his scratched up phone. Any other "alternative" which gets him a new phone on the policy's dime (including reporting it lost), is a crime.

yeah, its being shady. But so is rooting. Your breaching contract, just to remove bloat ware. Wireless tether for root users is also "stealing". List goes on and on. But thats why were here.

and if/when you get a replacement, may i recommend a screen protector....
Maaaaan all you have to do is say the on screen keyboard doesn't work its a software issue it only works when it wants to. Just remember The customer is ALWAYS right...I did it over the phone threatned to cancle my service and 2 days later new phone that was the droid 1 though. Id still take a fat **** on it though just so you can say you did it for conversation sakes.

[UPDATED: 5/10/12] Sprint's Policy on Handling Rooted Devices

Here is the official document outlining their methods and procedures for handling devices with suspicion of root.
oo reary ??
so basically it's a "please don't root, but if you do...umm...well please don't"?
Seems pretty inoffensive to me. But the stuff about "schoolmarming" a rooter is ridiculous. I'd like to believe that anyone smart enough to find out about and root doesn't need a talking-to. I also doubt that rooted customers take up much of a support center's time overall. Of course, Sprint employees including Korey AKA WDM may say something else about that.

well, they don't want you to root for obvious reasons... tethering probably being the biggest one. Plus having to replaced bricked phones would be another. I can see their perspective... and instantly disregard it

Appreciate the info but this does not seem to cover what it means if they open a ticket and note that the device is suspected of root. Now with this suspect of root does this then give them an out on replacing or repairing?
Again this is all coming from my experience of my local and only place to get service, threatening to blacklist my phone if he "suspected" root.
Here is the Emeryville, CA store number (510) 596-0930 Give them a call and ask if you can bring in your phone for repair if you have root. I bet you will get a "no"

Print this pdf out and show it to them. Tell them it came from ISC in the "Service and Repair" section. If they ask how you got it, tell them it doesn't matter and that it is your job to know these things.
Yes it is noted that your phone is rooted, but like it says if there is an issue with a phone that cannot be fixed that will Advance Exchange it. No matter what. Trust me. If you have a problem just PM me and then I'll call.
Thanks for the info. The local reseller he wouldn't touch mine when she saw it was rooted. Mind you I took it in for the slider being loose and first thing she did was scroll through my apps and look for super user, then promptly showed me the door.

Who in their right mind would bring back a rooted phone expecting it to be covered/serviced. One with a working display for that matter.
You people are absolutely ridiculous.
I've been telling you all this for weeks now, and now korey posts one of the documents I was referring to, and you STILL choose to not only waste your time by going to stock, but making it harder for us to replicate and solve issues by not handing us the phone in the original environment when you found the issue. That can make it very hard at times to properly triage and repair a phone; think of it like forensics, a crime scene is only properly diagnosed when NOTHING IS TOUCHED.
So please, save me the frustration, and simply bring this doc in with you. And if they give you a hard time, tell them to look up the OTHER doc, the one that outlines which tier rooted phones fall in to (tier 2, btw, which dictates a $35 charge if you don't have TEP and free if you do. Which, hey, guess what, is the same ****ing tier as a nonrooted phone! Who would've thunk it!)
And to whoever says educating a customer is unneccessary because obviously they're smart enough blah blah blah...you're ignorant. Very very ignorant. Because no, I didn't get that customer that came in no less than SIX times with a bricked epic from just ATTEMPTING to root, actually ROOTED it for him, and flashed godamn srf, and yet still returned A SEVENTH ****ING TIME with a bricked epic. No, that definitely didn't happen. No way. There's just no way freaking way somebody who is interested in "hacking" their phone is actually an idiot. Nope.
Ridiculous

And allow me to reiterate, any trouble you get for a rooted device IN NO WAY IS A REFLECTION OF SPRINT. It is a reflection of the employee, and their laziness/ignorance/misconceptions. Fight them, because they are wrong.
Also, I cannot speak for 3rd party stores (your typical mall retailers). Not only do they sometimes operate under *slightly* different rules that I'm not privy to, but some of them frequently operate poorly and intentionally misguide you.
A classic and shockingly common example is sending us customers with liquid damage, telling them that we'll replace a liquid damaged phone for free if they complain enough.

epic 4g sprint lost

Hi all.
I lost my Epic 4G Sprint. i had no extra plan with sprint for lost or stolen device and i didnt have installed any of those apps that find your droid. i changed gmail password and all other accounts. i am not worried for that as i didnt have much pics videos music or other data on the phone. i called Sprint and now my line is shut down, but i have to buy a new device full price.
is there anything left to do to track it or find it or something else?
when lost it was on stock gingerbread EL30.
any idea would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Install PLAN B from play.google.com now.
If the battery hasn't shut down, you might still be able to find it.
Though, you should've done it before you deactivate it. Even if you recover it, it's now been blacklisted by Sprint as stolen and there's no way to undo that.
You cannot remote install an app if you change your Google password.

if that device is screwed now cause sprint blocked it, why cant they just contact me and bring it back to me?
or is there any other use of it like a ipod or even use it on some other carrier?

There is actually a way to clear up a blacklisted phone. It is not easy but if you prove you HAVE the phone and you ARE its original owner it can be done. Sprint reps will give you a number to call and what not.

I have mine flashed over to metro...it was somewhat expensive...(mine has a clean esn- so if i want to activate it to Sprint, i can)...but worth it.Have you tried Craigslist to see if anyone has put it for sale? To the OP, even if you can't get you original phone back, you can probably find a nice used Epic on eBay or Craigslist for ~$100. Just make sure it has a clean ESN before you buy it.
My sister just lost hers over the weekend and we were able to find it by using Google Latitude. It would already have to be running on your phone though. The last time my phone was able to ping hers was the EXACT location where she found it. Pretty incredible.

Thanks everyone for comments. I think I will move on and buy a new phone.
How much for an Epic? I have one sitting around I keep as a backup. I'd consider.

Stolen N4 - Who blocks IMEI?

Hi folks.
I feel stupid (and angry) as hell right now. The worst part is that I can't even explain how it happened. I'm the most careful person in the world with my phone, and haven't lost a smartphone in, like, a decade, but I believe I have just had my N4 stolen from me. I had it, then I put it in my pocket, stood up for 10 minutes, then it was gone, and, of course, immediately switched off. All my careful planning is null and void; once it's stolen / off, there's very little that pintail, plan b, lookout etc can do. (?)
Anyway, I just need to know where and how I get the IMEI blocked? It was bought directly from Google, not via a carrier. Does anyone know?
Thanks. I'm off to dust off my credit card, and try to replace my baby
I would think talking to your carrier would be a good idea since they have access to block imei's. Even if they can't they are best able to point you in the right direction.

GSM phones don't have IMEIs, do they? I thought you pop a new sim card in and it's usable again.

Call Google, they can block the IMEI and remotely shut it down, I think I also seen that you can file a lost/stolen report with them. You mfight get a replacement, too.

YES THEY DO.
.........
I'm afraid you can't block your phone from every carrier in the world OP. You should of flashed Cerberus as a system app onto your phone.
Thanks all for your replies.

So far, I've filled in a form I found for order related queries, but that's the best I could find. If anyone has any help for phone numbers/URLs/emails, I'd be really grateful. I'm still searching.

If you use a mastercard and you bought it within 90 days, they'll replace it if stolen.

Badass. But just tell Google. They can block it from T-Mobile and AT&T. I think straight talk too. Emails take along while but they do get back to you. I would put flyers up near where it was stolen that say the phone has been deactivated and will not work on any carrier. If it is returned to you there will be no questions asked ( maybe even lie about a reward) see what happens. You can say my number is on the lock screen or call this number in the contacts. Maybe they will just return it to lost and found or something. Could be it died and you just left it somewhere and someone picked it up to give it to lost and found?

How much of a fake reward would be required for a thief to return a phone? $100 bucks? Not worth incriminating myself. $200 bucks? Then my BS detector goes off because you are approaching the price of purchasing a new one.
I like your optimism but too bad the world doesn't work like that.

thanks for this post. my nexus 4 was also stolen a few weeks back. I didn't even think to contact my card company to see if they would replace it. According to the website, looks like they will

Sorry about your loss..
But according to your description of the incident... Someone stole it from your pocket after you stood up? How?? Or am I reading the op wrong

There was literally ten or fifteen minutes between me sitting at the table in the bar using my phone, and it being switched off when I asked my girlfriend to call it. I guess I was pickpocketed when I went outside for a smoke. Sucks, but this is what credit is for, I guess. I'd only just paid off my card
I just want to block that SoB from using it. I'm still no nearer to finding the right contact at Google.
If they didn't wipe your phone, go to Google Play on the web and install Plan B to your phone. It will tell you where it is.

The phone was stolen and switched off within ten to fifteen minutes of the last time I had it in my hand. Pretty tough to install Plan B in those circumstances I have various apps for locating it, as well as a number of Tasker scripts to locate, erase, etc. but they are all pretty much worthless the minute the thief has switched off the phone.
--
I have tracked down the phone number for US Google Device Support , which I have called and they appear to have it in hand, although they have had to escalate my call to a specialist as they were not sure if they could block the IMEI.
Thanks all for taking the time to reply. My new phone has been ordered and should be here in a few days. Everything's backed up to Dropbox, so I'm only down a bit of money and some inconvenience. It could be worse.

Yeah, at least you weren't hurt in the incident. It sucks to have your stuff stolen (I had a phone stolen about 2 years ago in a mugging) but at the end of the day we move on and don't let it get us down. I've found that I'm now much more cautious with my electronics in public, which I guess is a good thing.
Hello there, sorry to hear about your situation. I actually JUST lost my Nexus 4 this past weekend as well. Were you able to get a resolution from the Google team regarding the block on the IMEI? I've tried searching around for more info but haven't been able to find much. What ended up happening if you don't mind me asking?

I'm Going To Rectify A Mistake Tomorrow

I got The HTC One and contacted EE to cancel the contract and take the phone back as I changed my mind.
With the phonebeside me in its box, I've just had to have a play with it and now I'm gutted to be sending it back.
It's absolutely stunning, I've never seen or held such a wonderful device.
I'm wondering now as I've been sent a returns bag etc, charge it up and hope EE will let me keep it or send it back and get another one.
So... why are you sending it back?
Um yeah.... Some more details perhaps?
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
I got the phone but then decided my iPhone 5 would do and i'd send it back. So I cancelled the contract and they've sent me a returns bag.
Inquisitive a while ago, I just decided tol have a play around with it and now wish I hadn't cancelled.
Was wondering if I contacted them could I uncancel or simply send it back and start again.
and your point is?

Your choosing an iPhone over this superb phone, that in itself is ludicrous sorry to be so blunt but seriously cannot see the sense in that.

Keep it otherwise whenever you see someone with a One you'll wish you kept your One.

iPhone is something else. You can't compare these two. No need of pointless hate against it.

Just phone EE again say you changed your mind, you decided to stay with them, they would be more than happy to let you stay. I don't see why there would be any problem. Very likely they would let you keep the phone then just start a new contract, cos technically only until you returned the phone your contract is fully stopped, they may be able to reverse it at this stage.

Thanks a lot for your help, I'll give them a bell. Think i'll put it on charge. :
Haha, this is hilarious. Go on to xda to ask whether you can change your mind about cancelling a contract (or not) with EE?
Call me old fashioned, but I would be asking EE, not XDA. Maybe that's just too much common sense.

No he started a thread saying he ordered the ONE and then before getting it he changed his mind thinking he would be ok with the iphone 5 so he calls in and has them cancel the new contract and send him a return kit. He then gets the ONE and being a phone junkie like all of us on XDA he HAS to play with and realizes that he loves the ONE and does not want to use his iphone 5 anymore but as he said he already called in to cancel so what does he do??? Which has been answered so next time you wish to bash someone or talk crap maybe sharpen up on your reading comprehension skills.
Don't really think OP is trying to be a troll or anything.. i think he/she is just confused and didn't know how awesome of a phone it was till he/she used it..
Which is what you suppose to do with any new phone, you read up on it, find features you like, buy it, get used to it.. decided should you keep it..
Not order a phone, decide to return it.. then want to use it and realize its a great phone
