So what's the best ROM? I know I know, "try for yourself" will be the first answer, but I just wanted to see who's the ppls champ

Today I tested :
- CM10 Nightly
- MIUI
- Stock with custom kernel
I didn't find any bug in those three version. I wouldn't say one is better then the other, they are just likely different.
- MIUI : As a really beautiful interface, it is a little closer to iOS but far from looking like it. Try to get picture
- CM10 Based on Stock and looks just like the stock version but has extra features + supports themes
- Stock well the original rom but I use a custom kernel to overclock my cpu to 1.8 Ghz
For now I will stay with Stock + Custom Kernel

Have you guys tried AOKP build 1? I have it and the nexus 7 flies
I am also using faux's 008m kernel
I have always loved AOKP for its customisation and tweaks Its what got me off CM and onto AOKP

Wow didnt know there was a MIUI build for this....gonna have to check that out...gonna steer clear of the kernel until i observe the long term effects of overclocking a quad-core device...but thanks

I tried build 1 on my galaxy nexus and its not bad but still missing lots of features of the old ics aokp. Im running paranoid right now on both devices and it has loads of features like the ics aokp. Its been very stable so far. I really like the ability to use tablet mode for certain apps.

Hi all, there are many roms un development section but i m confused which one to flash...can someone help me? Which one is the fast smooth JB rom? And with which kernal?? Currently using PA2.54 very slow...

There is dozens of this exact thread in the Nexus S forums. A few active and talking right now in this very sub forum. Its all a matter of personal opinion. Do some searches, read some reviews, flash and try and base your decision by your use cause no one uses their phone the same way with the same signals.

You seem new to roms, its probably best for you to start out with this combination:
ROM: Cyanogenmod 10 Nightlies
Kernel: Default CM10 kernel
or
ROM: Rasbeanjelly
Kernel: Trinity kernel
Also heres a popular list of roms and kernels
ROMs: CM10 Nightlies, Slimbean, Blackbean, Rasbeanjelly, Strawberry
Kernels: Marmite, Matrix, Trinity, Air

yea i m new to rom actually this is my 1st android phone... i was using symbain for last 3 years... now moved towards android... can u give me a link of Stock rom 4.1.2? and i have a little question can i flash stock rom without wipe data?? currently on Paranoid Android 2.54...

You need to wipe everything (except sdcard) if you're moving from a different rom (PA)
Just do a nandroid/titanium backup and everything will be fine.

CM10 is your best bet, other ROMs like Rasbeanjelly+Trinity is also good too but it's more likely a gimmick imo.

Definitely start out with CM10. I just recently got into flashing custom ROMs on my Nexus S (was rocking stock for a long time), and CM10 + Marmite kernel (smartassV2, cfq, 200/1000) is my preferred setup.
I've also tried my luck with Slimbean and Strawberry 4.1.2, but both of them always had little annoyances that you simply don't have to worry about with CM10. That being said, the AOSP-based ROMs like Strawberry and Slimbean do run very smoothly. I do plan on trying out AOKP, however, as it has a TON of customization options and appears to be pretty polished overall.

Slim Bean is the best rom for me, but I can customize everything so I have no problem. For most people it's better to use CM10 and the Jelly Bean 4.2 gapps.

Both the ROM and kernel can have an effect on gaming performance. Try testing out another kernel to see if anything improves.
Like I said earlier, I highly recommend Marmite for the Nexus S. It has great performance and battery life.

1. Yes, that's the latest nightly. Should be very stable, as far as I know.
2. DO NOT download that gapps file. The one linked in that article has the old, ugly prototype keyboard and has force closes up the anus. You can search this forum for better packages of the 4.2 Google Apps, but they are all still a little too buggy or incomplete for my tastes.
3. No need to flash a radio. CM will not overwrite your current one.

in my experience, the best combo is:
ROM: CodenameAndroid 3.5.0
Kernel AirKernel stable r2
the battery life is very good, there is no lag and with new ADW launcher, homescreen and drawer are very smooth

[Q] Does a custom Rom come with a Kernel?

Does a custom Rom come with a Kernel?
My specific case :
Nexus 7 32Gb Wifi
Android 4.1.2
Rom : PA 2.54
Kernel : Franco 3.1.10
My plan is to update to PA 2.99Beta6 which is based on Android 4.2.
I'd like to know if I'll also need to flash a new kernel as part of the upgrade process or if the PA 2.99Rom also includes the required kernel.
My guess is that it will be included with the Rom but figured it wouldn't do any harm to ask.

PMSL, how on earth do you think a ROM would actually work otherwise without a kernel.

My fear was that a Rom might use or expect the stock kernel, cheers for the answer though.
With that in mind, I wonder why Roms don't tend to ship with custom kernels. Franco's seems to be widely preferred to stock.

most roms that are actually developed ship with custom kernels(like cm for example). roms that are just compiled from aosp source that have some mods added usually use the default android kernel(or stock roms with added mods). also, many roms ship with other custom kernels included. anyways, many others prefer trinity kernel

Sorry I may have picked up on your question wrong, but many developers, well in fact most would use custom kernels, some prefer stock, stock kernels are generally very stable but quite limited in what they can do, for example take the pretty amazing Siyah on Galaxy S3 which gives you the ability to dual boot different ROM, s, i had AOSP as my main ROM and a Samsung ROM as my secondary ROM which was great for a while but they novelty wore off for me as I really only used the AOSP ROM, not to mention over clocking , etc, etc, etc.
I use Trinity Seven kernel on the Nexus and i find that the tablet seems to charge faster than with the CM kernel that comes with Liquid Smooth ROM.

Stock ROM and kernel play well together. Other than that no one can tell you, everyone has different tastes. Everyday we see these threads and the answer is the same, just try any and all that interest you.

I have had my N7 since pre order and I can't begin to tell you how many ROMs I have tried.
Dirty AOKP is the best I have used...bar none! Very fast, smooth and extremely stable. It has a very involved DEV who offers great support. It offers a choice of seven or eight kernels that you can choose when flashing. The latest build has Tablet UI that you can install without rebooting.

Flash M-Kernel, it just updated to a33 with cool updates and its so cool.

Best Advice for New Nexus 10 Owner

Well, my Nexus 10 is in the mail direct from Google! Believe it or not, they were actually the cheapest source for the 16GB model. I not worried about storage space since I have 32GB now on my phone and max out at about 4GB.
At any rate, I am both excited and nervous. I have had a Samsung Nexus phone for about a year and super happy; however I have read horror stories about this tablet (not connecting to WiFi, random reboots, etc.). So, where should I start?
If anyone can give me a bullet point list of the best ROM, kernel, GApps, etc I'd appreciate it!!

AOKP and Pa are the best ROMs for me, combined with trinity 10 or Kt kernel
This is by far the best tablet I have owned.

There are several aokp builds. The normal one a couple pub ones which are great and the one I use from ktoonsez and task650 so you have choices for your choices

This is our first tablet so I got a 3yr warranty with full accident coverage from Squaretrade. They issue you a check for your original purchase price if you break it anytime in that 3yrs.

Every phone I have had that has both an available AOKP and CM rom always wins hands-down when running AOKP. I'll keep flashing a CM10 rom every 2 or three months to see if they have improved, but within a day I am back on AOKP. Will stick with it until I see CM catch up and surpass AOKP. Thanks everyone! It arrives tomorrow...almost called in sick (ha, not).

I thought aokp was based off cm10?

I personally use sentinel ROM. It doesn't have all the aokp features and it uses the crappy new ui BUT it seems to be the most stable especially since I use my tablet and ps3 controller to play games all day. If anyone has a better ROM to try I'm open to suggestions

I understand your concern, I was the same before I bought mine not too long ago, but I had to have it. And to be honest I was very pleasantly surprized I was only on stock for a week or so, but I dont think I ever experienced a random reboot, and I don't have any issues at all with the screen or WiFi.
I've tried a few ROMs and kernels like CyanogenMod and Paranoid, but right now I'm running AOKP Project Unicorn Butter from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095222 , but it looks like you're already familiar with AOKP It has been the smoothest, snappiest ROM so far, and if you run it with the KTManta kernel from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015874 , its the best android experience you'll have ever had. I know it's mine.

Thank you everyone - Last question: What's all the buzz about "Aroma"? What exactly is it? Is it worth flashing?

Aroma is just an installer. It comes up when you flash certain ROMs etc. Allows you to install several things right there before booting add launcher/apps/etc

I am not clear if I can install just the kernal to the stock image? (I am comfortable rooting w/ SuperSU and I am comfortable installing TWRP.)
Then additionally I am not clear on how I choose the different kernals when using a custom rom? I mean not using the Aroma installer. (Is it done the same way as installing a custom kernal to stock, IE same answer as my above question?)

You just flash it in twrp. Same for custom ROMs. Download whichever one you want to use. Flash it. They overwrite any existing kernel. Can't use more than one

Thanks iamikon! I've read where people say to always wipe two caches after something like this, can you/someome clarify that aspet?
-I would guess I do that when I flash a new kernal
-I would guess I dont have to do that if I am flashing a whole new ROM
TIA again...

Do you all recommend twrp? I have been using CWRTouch 6.0.2.3 on my phone since it came out w/o any problems so I flashed the Nexus 10 version to the tablet and it works great. The only thing I am missing is 'wipe battery stats' but everything else is there.
Any reason to use twrp instead?
