Inside upgrading the network to lte - Networking

So got some good news.. LTE should be practically everywhere in Denver and around by late spring.. I'm working on the AT&T cell sites upgrading to LTE in Wyoming.. next on the list is sprint sites in Denver.. pic related site I'm working on now . Gonna post more pics and keep this alive by posting if you interested. Just did some Pim testing on dim connectors fun fun fun.. usually testing takes a week or 2 the first part is the upgrade , the second part is tower, very tedious and time consuming. Here's some pics on a site I tested today.
Update!
Out in wheatland Wyoming wind speed avg 50 plus mph.. that statistic definitely came into play yesterday...

The good news is when they refarmed the markets to include 1900 MHz 3G they went ahead and installed LTE equipment.

At&t runs on 1900 frequency correct?so basically if I'm in an area that T-Mobile has upgraded 1900 in I can use a unlocked at&t phone and get 3G possibly even 4G?Is this all correct. Thanks in advance!!!

Switching in the cabinet is a sight... Has att switched to fiber runs all the way up and moved the RRUs up to the antennae or they still down at cabinets?...

Wow would of thought that ATT would of been moving the RRUs up to the antennas like other started doing and sprint is doing across the board on their overhaul... Helps signal as it reduces the loss over the coax run from the base of the tower at the RRUs to the antennas... Theme is to run fiber from cabinet to RRUs up near the antenna so the coax run is reduced from the rru to antenna....
Though ATT and VZ were ahead of the game in the end LTE wise so I guess that upgrade missing is understandable....
You have the smart job then if just dealing in the cabinets! F all the climbing. Lol

Tmobile's HSPA+ Network

For those of you who are confused about Tmo's HSPA+ network and making comments on it's durability, here is a link that is on Tmo's website. I figured I'd make it easy for those of you that can't seem to do research.
http://t-mobile-coverage.t-mobile.com/hspa-mobile-broadband#
p.s. I have been in a couple of cities that carry HSPA+ right now and it's download speed from the interstate is around 4mbs. Remember peeps,IT'S NOT 4G. IT'S 4G LIKE. Quoted from Tmobile.
I am in an area that does not have HSPA+ and I pull down 4mb to 5mb all day long.

No. I believe you are incorrect sir.. AT&T does have 4G network as well as Verizon implementing their LTE (Long Term Evolution) network which is also 4G. Not to mention Sprint.

I believe you. KC is pulling that however there are still parts of KC that pulls 3g and edge. I have done the speed tests on that area (3x each). I believe that areas that are mentioned to have HSPA+ are probably still being boosted seeing how the network is still kinda new. I have noticed some members posting their speed results in places like Texas and the results are phenomenal.

Yep. I can attest to that. At work, the HSPA+ speed is beautiful. I can browse endlessly while tethering.
Although for some reason at home it says I have HSPA+ yet I lose data constantly, and it goes from HSPA+ to Edge, totally skipping 3G. Either way, I have no complaints since I can just use WiFi. It has worked well everywhere else since I got the phone.

None of the technologies available now are 4G, LTE isn't, and neither is WiMax, they are not capable of 100mbps download speeds, WiMax 2 and LTE plus are 4G networks and they won't be implemented till 2013, please get your facts straight. I got these facts from the comission that actually names the technologies. Google it

That map is awful. All of downtown Baltimore shows very fast, but I know of one tower in particular that is only UMTS, not HSPA. It would be nice to see a map of the coverage by data type instead of those vague speed descriptions.

Even though the G2 has the icon for 3G, it doesn't use it. It groups it with the "H" so it's either using 3G or HSPA+. I'm using the Mobile Signal Widget to have it accurately tell me if I'm using 3G or HSPA+.

Atrix 4G vs Inspire 4G Data Speed Comparison

So I took my wife to get a new phone yesterday, and got her away from BB and onto Android. She wanted the Inspire 4G, (she liked the extra real estate), while I have the Atrix. Great I thought, another phone to play with!!!
Before I jump into breaking down her new phone, I will let her get used to it, but I did want to do side by side speed tests between the Atrix and Inspire, so I ran several tests this morning after completing an OTA update for the Inspire so it has the current software. Atrix is on 4.1.83, GingerBlur 3.1.
The results I got were interesting. (This is in the Boston, MA area, using Speedtest on the Boston Comcast server).
The Atrix hovers right around 2.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps d/l, and consistently at 1.2 Mbps u/l. Ping averaging around 140ms.
The Inspire runs 3.5 Mbps to 4.5 Mbps d/l and 330 Kbps u/l. Ping averaging around 300ms.
Speeds over my wireless network are identical with 16Mbps d/l and 3 Mbps u/l.
I know the reason for the difference in upload speeds.............the Inspire is obviously still capped at the same rate the Atrix was. What I don't like is the fact that the d/l is hugely different, to the tune of almost double in some instances. The Atrix is also much more erratic in d/l speeds, while the Inspire consistently rises over the duration of the test in a much smoother fashion.
I am going to have fun playing around with both these phones as time goes on, and now I have a mission to prove without a doubt through testing that I have the better phone!
On a side note, I made the AT&T store go quiet for a moment. Most of the employees had black shirts on with a big 4G logo on them. I said loudly that I would like a shirt, but I want the one with "4G..........we lied to you" on it. All went quiet, and I of course did not receive a response. (I had a few beers before we went in to the store).
You can unlock hsupa with a custom Tom or flash radio, they already released the update.
I had an inspire, much better and more reliable data speeds, but its just too big for me.

From HTC website:
Hotmail, Live, and MSN email auto configuration settings update.
Makes the email set up process much easier and includes the most current settings for each type of email.
Increased potential data speed at which data can travel on the network.
And I can confirm through testing this device side by side with my Atrix the upload speed is stuck at 330kbps exactly the same as the Atrix was before 4.1.83. Note the word "potential" from the HTC site.
I already put this pic in another thread so don't troll me cause of that.

Yup, I'm outside Chicago and get pretty good 4G service at my office. Home, not so much as it's not even there, but that's what WiFi is for. I consistently get 1.5Mb up, but you can tell that's what it's limited at. I have surpassed the 10Mb down limit a few times, but it's usually between 8.5-9.5.
If I'm forced to use Sprint's 3G speeds to do anything, I want to rip my hair out. Sometimes I think it's all the messing around with my phone I've done, but man...the 3G speeds are horrendously slow.

I know 4G been out got the longest, but many of us don't get to use it. As much as they advertise 4G, I never knew what 4G was actually capable of. I'm sure if I didn't know the full capabilities of 4G, there is many others who don't know it either. At &T advertises talk and surf the internet at the same time, when I asked sprint about 4G, the only answer I get is that its faster.
And lol xopher.hunter, I also thought 4G was a $10 a month myth.

I can't love something I don't have, sorry OP.
If you don't have it at home and don't have Wifi, don't try it when you are somewhere that has it because you wont want to use your phone ever again on 3g. I really hope the slow expansion of 4g is because they are going to roll out LTE. I got my OG Epic on launch day, activated it, turned on 4g and have had it ever since. I have literally only used 3g four times and one of those was to run Speedtest. Maybe it would be more fair if those that have never had 4g got LTE first but that's not likely.

4G? Where art thou?

So I live in the Baltimore area which has full 4G/LTE coverage. I RARELY have 4G on this thing. Anyone having that issue as well?
Seems to connect fine for me when not on WiFi. I would be contacting Sprint if you are sure the LTE in that area is strong enough. Make them do the work to figure it out. Have you updated your PRL? If not you should do that and see if it helps.
From Sprint: "On some 4G LTE chipsets such as Qualcomm, the PRL determines if LTE is enabled for the geographic region you are in."

Yeah the live chat people are morons anyway. Might just go to the store and tell them to fix it.
I have the same issue in my area. I checked on sprint.com/coverage and it claims there is 4G coverage in my area. I hardly see the 4G icon on my phone and its painfully slow when on "3G".
I read somewhere that sprint is updating their towers for better coverage and start LTE coverage in more areas (mine included). I read on some unofficial site that they are only 23% done updating and are expected to complete the project (in my area) by the end of this year.

You probably zoomed out too far. I copied and pasted the east and west together so you can see where Sprint LTE is in 1 image.

I understand that. Just would have figured newer tech means better coverage. I guess not.
I was just in Baltimore all week for business and I got 4G the entire week! I was staying right near Camden Yards at a Holiday Inn Inner Harbour.

No, they just are not finished implementing lte. Think of sprint.com/coverage as planned coverage not actual completed sites. Most areas are 30%-40% complete from what I have been reading.
http://s4gru.com has a pretty in depth and accurate tracking system

Actually, I had done something with my MSL changing my proxy settings & when it rebooted, I looked at my network preferences & noticed it was CDMA only. I had to enable LTE before I actually started seeing LTE again in areas when I KNEW I should've had it around Dallas. Thing was, it was several days before I noticed it was CDMA only!

Sprint Spark on your S5 - ALL SPARK discussions here only

Whose got it and how fast is it?? Also does anyone know where I can find a coverage map for it??

The regular coverage map for data shows Spark coverage in addition to standard 3g/4g. Don't have it in my market yet but according to Sprint is supposed to reach peak speeds of 50-60mbps.
My stuff slow.....whats funny is they allegedly always workin on the towers or fixing something and always got the fukin nerve to be coming out with some allegedly newer or better/faster but never seems to fix what they already got running..... I swear if it wasn't for this employee discount that I receive which pretty much take $20 off my bill I would be so done with Sprint for this average service I get

I get at least 30 down and about 7-8 up in Dallas.

I dont go by sprint maps on their site. Go to s4gru.com become a member and donate about $10~$20 bucks to become a sponsor member which will let you see map coverage and every sprint tower in this country, can see which one is active with 3g only or 4g only or a towers with both 3g/4g active that site has alot of great info about sprints coverage and more.
Im in miami where band 41 in most tower is active but i cant recall if miami was already launched with spark but here's some tests.

Ya I'm in the DFW area and I am getting 3g. No LTE. Very disappointed choosing sprint. Can not use the s5 to its potential!

According to Sprint....
"These tri-band devices support active hand-off mode between 800MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz providing data session continuity as the devices move between spectrum bands."
"these devices are expected to give users the best experience by shifting from one band to another, depending on what speed is needed for the application in use at a given moment."
Supposedly band 3 is for international. Enabling it does nothing.
I disabled band 3 and the other 3 options enabled. It doesnt let me choose the order. Looking at the sprint map it shows spark in dfw.

I live in the Portland Oregon metro area and on 2 occasions when my GF has called me (from her S4 to my S5), the call was in HD voice. From what I understand, this can only happen in a spark situation. So I am betting they are getting ready to fire up the towers here in PDX ahead of schedule.
Rite by miami international airport pretty good 42mb dw..

Speeds
Here is my highest one so far on sprint LTE(not spark band 3 2500Mhz). My spark is disabled so I'm sure this is not spark speed. I'm in Kansas City HQ for sprint...what a joke!

Hey they're I would call Sprint and make them reprovision your phone. A lot of peoples with S5's and even HTC m8's phones are not properly provisioned and they do not connect to LTE.

Tri-band phones can only connect to LTE or CMDA(3G/1x) one at a time. To off set this towers and now being equipped Circuit Switched Fallback or Enhanced Circuit Switched Fallback. You are probably in an are where the Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) and Enhanced Circuit Switched Fallback (eCSFB) are not equipped on the towers. Sprint hasn't deployed this to most of its network yet. Areas that don’t have it already have no expected time frame for the roll out of this network technology, and since your smartphone is designed to prefer the ability to make and receive phone calls at all costs, it is programmed to stay on CDMA.

This is the best info that I've seen anout this situation. I can get LTE if I update PRL or toggle airplane mode. Calling Sprint does nothing BC most have no clue what this is and everything they see is working as should. Very very frustrating to hear "oh your device is the issue, go return it for a new one". I can also go into LTE only mode and it stay connected until I change it.
